Okay, seriously, what's Luna's problem? She's acting as if Sentinel is nothing but a violence-loving monster. Sentinel didn't get that way because he wanted to hunt prey or simply loves being violent... Sentinel got that way because he's obsessively protective of his family.
6786592
That's not it at all. You missed something important about the base nature of lunar pegasi.
Luna does have a point. Had Sentinel kept his head, he might have come out of this better. He might have been more useful.
There is a reason why the lunar pegasi near extinction.
There never are winners, Kudz. There never are.
What matters is what they do in the aftermath, figure out what went wrong and understand what could not be helped. It's hard being a parent/guardian or just a friend watching over another friend who needs you.
Trusting others to do their duties without micromanaging them is hard for a lot of characters. Bucky and Luna like to have control. Same with Celestia. They are realizing control is a fickle thing beyond what is within one's self.
Yet the urge to control what cannot be controlled is always there and when that control proves to not be there, the blaming begins.
Too many variables. Too many unknowns.
The foals paid for it.
.....The hell luna talking about? Of course he would fly in violently. A pegasus would have done the same without much training, so would anyone else who has not had the training to fight yet has the drive to. You had a pegasus kill someone long ago, despite being described as gentle, likely by accident. He likely flew in blindly himself.
Only difference is that he has more kiling instinct, but it would still be the same.
The dialogue with her literally made no sense. Sentinel's true nature IS the civility. And his desire to protect others. This situation is literally no different than the one where bucky was attacked. The only difference was that the nature of the enemy agitated him a lot more compared to a minotaur sniper. He sought to protect, and the extreme scenario mixed with his desire to protect caused him to lose control AGAIN.
Also what the hell is the point of the Hearthfire if it cannot even dispel hearthfire?
6786633
A pegasus in control of their senses might have dodged. Might have evaded. They might have attacked with intelligence rather than just mindless rage.
It's a bigger picture issue... if you haven't been paying attention to the worrisome signs that Sentinel has been displaying, then you're probably lost.
6786606 Still if Luna thinks this then she has a lot to learn about the natures of monsters and men...and I suddenly want to give her a first hand lesson.
6786671
Luna is hurt, confused, and trying to deal with a situation. She is trying to piece together what has happened.
Why the need for violence? I mean, that is what you are implying, correct?
Is this how you deal with somebody who is confused and befuddled in a state of shock and grief?
6786647 he's prone to outburts of aggressi on in dire situations. like this one. and he has never had combat training. the issue is saying 'he is jsut a beast' is rather idiotic. both of his bouts of rage came from harm ot potential harm to others. so its a lot more complex than just bestiality.
and i doubt someone without trianing would have the mind to think taht they would shoot back. besides she is somehow able to shoot someone movin with the momentum of a bullet so all points are moot here.
let us not forget that he learns a lot of his behaviors from bucky.
seems less like the issue is that their true selves are beasts and more that the issues i the beast encroaches on thier minds. and more so, its not something meant to even BE there to begin with.
6786764
The lunar pegasi are beasts. Monsters. It was Luna that made them civilised again. She calmed them and gave them reason.
6786697 At this point, I like to point out that Luna in this fic crossed a serious line for me...and anyone, grieving or not, should get the stupid knocked right out of their head before they go ahead and imply that Sentinel is a beast for defending those he cares about...because real monsters just do not have that kind of response to those who pose the level of threat that Hag did...real monster just don't give a shit about such things such as the hag herself...do not test me...sentinel had to put up with enough shit as it is...his family and friends mad at him for doing a job that was supposed to be his...and completing the mission despite the horror that happened...and all because some Sun wielding moron decided that he wasn't ready? Newsflash no one ever is truly ready for war all we can do is be prepared as we possibly can be and pray we get out alive...and he gets flack for it? Anyone who goes into a firefight with these sort of odds and what comes to, considering Moonbow's miracle resurrection, amounts to no casualties...that's a flipping miracle...and these folks are bad mouthing that???!!!! Luna just insulted every veteran out there of any war...congratulations.
6786792
But the lunar pegasi are monsters. The Myrmidons for example go through extensive conditioning to hold back their bestial natures. Sentinel is what he is.
Look at it this way. You get a wolf as a puppy. It acts friendly and appears to be like a domesticated dog. At some point, it undergoes stress and behaves like a wolf would do. This is Sentinel, more or less. It has nothing to do with insulting war veterans, and everything to do with Luna trying to keep everypony safe.
What you are doing is trying to apply attributes of a common domesticated dog to a wolf just because it appears to be cute and cuddly. This never ends well.
6786785
Keep reading. Several hundred chapters or so, you should have the biology sorted out.
6786792
6786802
I would also add that, by society's standards, we veterans are beasts. We have a very 'uncivilized' reaction to things... we run towards danger, not away. We are willing to kill our own species. We are, again by the standards of society, abberations.
Luna is not in her right mind. Yes, the lunar pegasai are barely domesticated chaos beasts (let's keep in mind that they were created as pony versions of Khornate warriors), but she does know Sentinal's true nature. What she is dealing with is the cognative dissonance between the two sates and her perceived responsibility for not giving Sentinel the tools he needed.
As Kudzu said, she is not insulting vets. As a vet myself, I didn't even see any form of attack on us at all. She was acknowledging her own perception that she didn't give the requisite tools/training to a barely tamed chaos beast.
6786802 But isn't ironic? Extensive conditioning is all part of raising a kid...humans condition their young to "do the right thing" and yet the right thing in many cases is subjective...especially in a world soaked in war...in many ways the only thing that you can be certain of is that you exist...every other thought is always determined by past experiences and ones current emotions...teaching a child to act a certain way is "conditioning" and parents do that all the time by encouraging "good behavior" and discouraging "bad behavior"...however most of these behaviors are defined by society...we are all monsters deep down but conditioning is what keeps us from showing this side...why else would we attribute "parental problems" with delinquency? A person is someone who can face this monster and firmly say "No, just no," and the walk away. Sentinel has repeatedly had to put up with this...and has risen above this...as a ton of people who have actually seen war...now the question is...does Sentinel become classified as a monster for losing once to his inner beast? Hell no...if anything this is exactly the kind of shit Bucky goes through...we all know how much of a bad ass he turned out to be...a loss is only crippling if you let it be and this loss gives Sentinel a chance to truly rise above that beast with in all of us...and become something even more terrifying that a Myrmidon.
That is why I am pissed...because Luna just flat out forgot her own lesson...the one that kickstarted this entire franchise
6786856 I do not see my father, a Vietam vet, as a monster, a beast at times perhaps, but a beast is still noble and has mind of sorts, simply because I am was not there I may not understand war as well a he does, but I know the ones who fight do not fight mindlessly, a monster is different from a beast because it is untamed...a monster is simply apathetic. That said...a beast is a creature at the crossroads at being a person or monster and is now making that choice.
And I very much doubt Sentinel will chose the latter over the former. Because he's fighting to have something to return to...and that's something that will push him to his absolute limits.
6786944
Yes. And here, we will see Sentinel really grow as a pony. I don't want to say too much, because, spoilers, but he'll be getting some training to help him contain the beast within. In keeping with themes of growth and trying something new, he will not be getting this training from Princess Luna, but another pony entirely. If you've been paying attention to the hints in the story, you should be able to guess who. There is a pony who is pretty good at helping ponies deal with rage by teaching them to meditate.
Sentinel stands at a crossroads. He is a dangerous, predatory beast that lives among prey animals. He hasn't had a lot of training to deal with what he is on the inside. He doesn't live in a place where he can be wild, like the Shetlands. He lives in the middle of a deeply populated area. He's already been showing warning signs and signs of being in trouble for a long, long time now.
He will come out of this as a better character, rooted in growth, with a dedication to do more than battle the monsters around him, but the monster within as well. This is the catalyst of his growth. But not just his growth, but others like him. Luna is going to realise that there is the potential for change.
As for Luna, she is not the same pony that she was at the start of the story. She is also changing, transitioning, trying to get better. Trying to recover from her own mistakes. She's making a mistake right now, but she doesn't realise that yet. But yes, things are supposed to be unsettling right now. Everything is shook up for everybody.
Looks like folks need to pay more attention to the story instead of getting all emotional without proper moral consideration.
Sentinel is, quite literally, classed as a monster. He is, objectively and subjectively, a machine meant to grind flesh and bone to pulp and eat both. Unlike a soldier, who is a person that is trained to do what is necessary against their nature, his nature is blood and violence and rage and NOTHING else. The rest of it, the civility, the knighthood, the writing - that's his training, that's what he wanted to be instead of the monster he is. His training to be a part of society rather the natural enemy that Discord created his people to be. #monsterproblems
And speaking about a berserker, AS a berserker, I know goddamn well what Sentinel goes through. The rage can make you nearly unstoppable, but when you do get stopped you get shut down HARD. He needs to be able to keep his head about him at all times, or at least be so drilled with combat practice that he can utilize reactionary tactics even while in the red haze of bloodlust. Which is quite literal, I will say from experience - it's an actual red haze.
I've little overall love for Luna due to how much she gets her dick sucked by the huge fanbase she has, and I think it's safe to say people recognize I'm a huge Celestia supporter - so I'm going on record now to say nothing Luna said was inherently wrong, and the way she said it was entirely influenced by the fact she's practically one of his mothers, and she feels like she failed her favorite son - in hindsight, she did. She helped him train himself to fit in, she didn't train him on how to handle his monstrous instincts during the situations where they show themselves.
6786913 I don't think you quite get the context of what Sentinel is among a society of herbivorous, herd-oriented creatures. Ponies aren't innately inclined to war and bloodshed, certainly not in the way you would think a human is. His entire species was not merely bred for war, with bestial tendencies; they were made whole cloth for it, created as warped, carnivorous equines. They were designed, at the most basic level, to quite literally be monsters. It is only by Luna's power that they were pulled back from being mindless, carnivorous beasts, and made even somewhat civilized.
Luna assumed that Sentinel was a sort of breakthrough. A breakaway from what the rest of his kind is: civilized and not requiring severe conditioning just to operate sanely. She assumed that he was, essentially, an aberration among his kind; a possible beginning to a new breed of Lunar Pegasi, ones that would be able to integrate seamlessly into equine society without any need for Luna to restrain them personally.
She was wrong.
6786989
Certainly, his extremely strong desire to BE that aberration is somewhat aberrant by itself, and it's likely his offspring will be able to realize that dream, but it's most definitely not him.
6786944
You have that perception because you lived with him and saw what he dealt with. Most of 'civilized society' would not agree with you (or with me for that matter). I understand your anger, but I do feel it's misplaced. Yes, there is a difference between a monster and a beast. The problem is that most 'normal' people don't (and will never truly) perceive the difference.
Using Vietnam as an example, there was the massacre at Mai Lai. A whole villiage, ostensibly of only civilians, completely destroyed and razed. No survivors. The soldiers that did the deed did so out of the perception that there were VC in the villiage, likely the whole villiage. The stresses they were under most definitely created their bestial, if logical in a way, actions that day. So were they beasts, or monsters?
Reversing that, the VC used some of the nastiest tricks, traps, and guerilla warfare that has been seen. They did it to protect their families, but they tried to be as gruesome as possible. Again I ask: beasts or monsters?
Perception is a very touchy thing. Take this disagreement: because of your father, you see an insult; I, as a veteran, do not. Who is right? In reality, we both are... because of our own perceptions. I hope that you can see my point, and understand why I don't see what you do, even if we don't agree.
P.S.: In a way, I'm glad you did get riled... it means Kudzu did a great job writing and you are very invested in the characters.
6786975
Been there, seen that. We Celts know the battle rage well.
6787028
I get pissed off enough and I see red... but only for a while. Then everything just becomes grey... the world loses colour. At that point, I'm usually an unpleasant person.
I got that way in physical therapy when I was learning how to walk again after the accident that wrecked my body. Too much pain and anger.
6787028
Passed down through my old man, the Norseblood. I feel you there. Once it's all the way red, total loss of conscious thought, complete checking-out. Recollection of the events during don't come back until hours or days later.
6787087 Watching someone do something that Luna just did...is something that has always triggered that exact button with me and I don't ever want to lose that switch regardless of whatever life throws at me..because then I will be monster.
6787087
But do you have your bear shirt?
House and Hearth.
What?
House and Hearth.
I heard you the first time Childe of the Night, what do you. . .
It is what, no who, I worship now.
I don't understand.
The night has born me no safe refuge, it's goddess and caretaker full of empty promises and virtues long lost. I worship something I can place my three hooves on. For I have met her, and while I can never have her, at least I know she has MY best interests at heart, for once.
You dare! You would abandon that which gave you strength, gave you direction, gave you purpose!?!?
I would. If for no other reason than it has done so to me. I can still feel it you know. That fear. That sustaining fear. Mothers like yourselves drip with it. Your biology makes you perfect meals for the kind of monster you made me into. It nourishes and sustains while my stomach turns into knots. So I say for a third, and final time. House and Hearth, they're my new haven now.
I will not be spoken to that way! I will not be treated like some foal! You will pay for your insolence.
Go ahead. Strike me down. I will do my contemplation in Tartaurus. And I will wait for you. I'll have all the time in the world to wait and watch you pay for your sins against my kind.
6787289
???
6787053 Happens to me if I bottle away my anger, depression, rage and any other negative emotions for to long with out any release... It gets so hard to control if I try to force it back down.....At the end of it I am usually dead to the world.
6786770 Can get what you mean. still it feels like they are saying the beast is the real sentinel. the beast is a curse, one given long before he is born.
Also what is the poitn of hearth fire? Before i could revive the dead and chagne fate. Here it could not do something as simple as heal tissue damage let alone destroy necromancy.
6787134
Sadly, no. I've got the bear physique, though! I hope that will be authentic enough credentials to validate my Norseman lineage.
6787363
I'm not talented enough to write whole stories so I write scenes.
6787435
Except that the beast is what Lunar Pegasi really are deep down inside. You've actually got it completely backwards. It's not a curse, it is what the species was quite literally created to be. Their civility, what little they have as a group, is a blessing: it's imposed on them and it suppresses their true nature.
It didn't change fate as far as I recall (one of them was destined to die on the trip, and one of them did). And Hearthfire managed to revive someone, yes, but I do believe it was implied that there was a trade there: Sombra had to trade himself for that revival (in a way that seems to involve not getting an afterlife, or at least not being in the same afterlife as his other half). It was only through the sacrifice of one that another could rise. And now we've established another fact about hearthfire: it can't heal necromancy. At least not directly (probably, and this is just from what was said, because it probably can't harm the user's friends, and the flesh that came into contact with the magic is tainted with necromantic energies. The only way hearthfire might be able to cleanse that is through destroying that flesh, and thus hurting Sentinel, so it's possible that that's what was really in the way. I think it was mentioned that removing all the necromantic flesh would let them heal it with hearthfire, but I could be wrong. Memory isn't perfect for me.)
6786764
... who the hell gets in a fight not expecting the opponent to fight back? Fools, fools, the lot of you! To the dungeons with you, to think about your naivete!
... Also typo.
6786807
It shouldn't be that complicated; what's the ratio of fillies born to colts? 2-1? 4-1? 5-1?
Also, I did notice in the series there seemed to be about a 5-1 ratio of mares to stallions in Ponyville, but only in Ponyville. Canterlot, Manehatten, Cloudsdale, Appleushious all seemed to have approximately equal numbers.
6789468
Angel Bunny.
Also, ponies worship Celestia.
Just because a church is mentioned doesn't mean it has anything to do with Yeshua Ben Yosef and Yahweh.
So. Sentinal lost his eye. but they could fix the bones and skin around the face? I wonder how long it will be before bucky or one of the other smart ones builds a mechanical eye for him. Like Garret from the original thief series.
I just got back to this story. I had left off somewhere in the 300's. How are you still writing? You are DOUBLE the amount of words in the ENTIRE Harry Potter series and you are still going strong. I'd figure your fingers would be nubs at this point. This story started out great and is still great 857 chapters in.
nice use of my OC Kudz :) loved it, you nailed her perfectly.
