Go Sunset. Kick flank and chew bubble gum.
Well, any pity I felt for Mr. Night Stallion has evaporated. Grade-A dunderhead, not a leader at all. Just another despot with power.
... Why are all the evil bosses male unicorns anyway? Seriously, the lich, Sombra's shadow, Night Stallion. Where are the evil mares?
Nooo, do not sacrifice the Typos! They must be fixed, corrected, not obliterated. They were but words that came out wrong, they are not weakness but a cry to be beter.
This is either Sunset's ascension, or demise.
Also: Thundervolt is the only mirror traveler worth anything. Mad perhaps but at least he shows he can think.
5930436
it's they Unicorn nirosis, they are more prone to mental instability because of all that magic running through their brains.
5930436
Dunderhead maybe, but he has the Royal Pony Sisters playing by his rules.
The Shadowbolts are the ultimate evolution of strength and the purging of weakness. It is an acknowledgement that the Night Stallion's philosophy holds value.
It also has Celestia considering the possibility to start allowing type two unicorns to be upgraded to type threes.
......... okay dude, there is no god damn way this idiot of a leader could have succeeded in anything. he is too dense and short sighted to be a leader.
he is actually pretty disappointing. he is no threat in the slightest. there is absolutely no intelligence to him.
5930453 that is until they figure out just how stupid he actually is then they realize they just need to outsmart him, not try to outmuscle him. which should be obnoxiously easy to do.
seriously, this guy sounds like a sociopathic joke diregarding the nerdy kids.
5930468
I wonder if there is a really obnoxiously smart pony.... like... I dunno... some kind of purple pony princess that is all smart and stuff.
5930453
Except that the Shadowbolts use shadow magic which the mirror travelers fear and despise.
Also:
Is this how unicorns get high?
The Night Stallion is a bit disappointing honestly. His mentality feels like generic villain overlord. Nothing interesting about him. The mentality seems rather foalish honestly. So I'm again thinking the Night Stallion is a colt of 6-8 years of age when he ascended and has been mentally locked at that age since.
The turn for Sunset Shimmer was very nice and I liked it. As I said... this is either her ascension, or she goes to her demise while saving those she cares about. If the Night Stallion actually captures her that would be a letdown. I'd rather see her die then become a fucktoy.
5930473 its not even really comparable. this guy is an idiot. he is gonna let his scientists get killed? its like throwing a kingdom's blacksmiths into the front lines because they do not know how to wield the swords they craft. that is a level of ignorance that makes it hard to believe he could have decapitated one of thos love kittens from the comics, let alone an alicorn.
5930496
It's called survival of the fittest, or a more brutal aproch to Macivelliesum. The strong and smart prosper, if your strong but dumb you get killed, if your smart but weak you die. By having only strength breed into your society individuals becomes stronger by comparison. Each individual is worth 20 normal people. Or at least that's the theory.
5930496 "Why waste time feeding a blacksmith that can't use his own creations when you can feed a blacksmith that can?"
This is basically his thought process, simply the final stage of what the gryphons were starting to do before Bucky and Twilight destroyed them. For a world that cares for nothing but power and full of hatred, it doesn't surprise me. Considering they're apparently down to just their last city on their world, they can't afford to spend resources on those who can't defend themselves.
Their whole world is basically insane. They're likely dealing with all of the underworld's demons, who were also doing the "strong kill the weak" thing. If I recall, Celestia was supposed to be the one to eventually deal with them, but she's dead in their version of the world.
5930473 put simply, the night stallion is really a let down, and incredibly stupid.
seriously he is saying 'let the weak die' when we are talking about them fighting something as strong as himself. it be like sending a bunch of guys after a tanking only using assault rifles. it is a lack of even tactical intelligence.
5930527
The problem is that the Night Stallion doesn't value anything but combat strength, and considers all else to be 'weakness', which is a phallacy almost as enormous as Derpy's fillyboner for her husband.
[ph typo is actually a pun, in case it's too subtle]
So his subjects are only getting better at fighting and backstabbing, which is why he's only working to disrupt; so far, he's built exactly nothing. The Night Stallion is literally destroying everything in his path in a mad grab for power that is doomed because he can't grasp the concept of power through anything other than brute force and deception.
5930453
The thing is, they understand there should be a limit. It's fine to have FORCES like that. But the only reason you should have an army is to protect those who can uphold and carry society forward into progress and longevity. He just has an army, not a culture or a people. He's killed off anyone who could keep their society alive. At this point all he seems to have is vat-grown racist soldiers.
Which would have been alright at first if he had to -fight- an obnoxious and greedy and evil Equestria in order to gain supplies to save his dying population. Instead he just showed up and started a war, a war he ultimately cannot win because he's invading with rapidly diminishing resources, and mortality rates seem through the roof. People seem controlled by madness and fear rather than a common bond such as survival.
Did Night Stallion lose his mind in the death of their world, too? Or was that sort of a side-effect of suddenly gaining the power of a god and not being able to control his ego?
Edit: Actually, I remember something along the lines of Night Stallion being the pawn to a being like Galacticorn, so that part's probably not even his fault.
5930580
Too early to call him a let-down. We've only seen one scene of him. Be practical and reasonable.
So the mirror ponies, minus the earth ones, are basically the Kree.
"We will make ourselves into a race of perfect warriors! ...Except we also bred out any real ability to innovate so the supposed 'weak' races keep kicking our plots when we can't just brute force defeat them, oops."
Seriously, Night Pony is an idiot, and I can't wait for Twilight to finally school him.
Still wondering if he'll turn out to be a counterpart of a pony we already know...
5930565 that is the actions of a moron to be honest. that really holds zero detail. becuase more than likely the blacksmith who focuses his time on perfecting his craft will create superior tools compared to a blacksmith that takes time practicing fighting.
veyr quickly you fill these roles with the incompetent.
its completely non functional. and his tactic here is also extremely incompetent and one only those who are backed against a wall would use.
5930603 dude he is basically calling his mean weak when they are basically a bunch of guys with only pistols facing a tank. that takes a whole assload o stupid.
5930583
It's called survival of the fittest for a reason, its not a life model for a better society. It's a model for survival. His plan is to have a people strong enough to take whatever they want. Who needs a blacksmith when you can just take swords from someone else. Who needs to know how to farm when you can make your slaves do it. this is the world in which the night stallion lives and this is the rules by which he governs.
5930615
While not sensible, it certainly makes sense. Did you expect him to be some suave and debonair Machiavellian mastermind? Last I remember he's just as much a pawn as Bucky would have been. Two super-alicorns are battling it out on a cosmic scale and they're throwing their baby boy alicorns at each other trying to get a leg up.
5930615
what you don't realize is there's more to strengthe then power. intellect can be a strength, but if its intellect for the sake of intellect it doesn't make you a stronger warrior, in a world where everyone is counted on to fight being weak is a hindrance to the survival of everyone else.
Welp, Sunset just blew Sparkle away. Ascension via fixing a broken spell of some long dead old coot vs. THIS? No competition.
And DAMN IT Bucky, stop losing limbs for crying out loud, soon you'll lose your 5th leg and will have to replace it with an artificial one.
5930637
actually that's kind of what I was hoping for I kind of hope she was going to be more like Khan from star trek. Kind of magnanimous and brutal. kind of the anti Bucky, where Bucky is coarse and crude he would be sophisticated and classy. Where Bucky is humble, Night has the ego is big is the Sun. but underneath it all they are exactly the same cunning and brutal.
I was only slightly disappointed that this did not pan out, in essence the night stallion and Bucky are exactly the same. both are crude unrefined brutes, the only difference is the night stallion decided to forsake his Equinitiy. all for the sake of survival.
5930588
Well, consider the kind of culture that would produce this kind of person. Luna betrayed the whole world, and became either destructive or the worst stagnant tyrant... I don't remember which, exactly.
It seems very much so that his attitude is, in fact, a logical way to react to having a world who's very resources are disappearing, and for which not thriving, and not being strong, means that you are wasting those resources on failures. You spent years caring for many many researchers who cannot kill four invaders, one of which is an inexperienced combatant, and one of which has no legs. (Of course, the other two are a highly vicious born killer gifted with superpowers from a god and a highly trained already-powerful unicorn wielding a relic that supercharges her magic). What a waste of time and resources.
In times of prosperity this is an insane view, though. It is sadistic and cruel. You have the resources to spread around, to allow people with multiple sorts of virtues to thrive because your society could use that specialization to improve itself. But in cruel times, in harsh times, then you adapt to this kind of mindset. The kind of mindset that becomes difficult to cast aside just because there might be a chance for prosperity... especially since at that time you're asking someone to cast away what kept them alive during the hard times, and what they have come to believe at their very core.
... After this... I can't feel anything but this weird scornful pity toward the mirror travelers. They were survivors and they did what they felt they had to to survive (whether that was the only solution is to be seen)... but now they are trapped in the paradigm that everything is us versus them, and you must constantly cull your forces in order to even survive, much less thrive. They cannot move past it, and they need to be destroyed because they cannot.
5930615 Have you not realized that throughout the entire story everyone has been making stupid errors? And Night's logic might not make sense in our world or in Equestria, but think about it through his eyes on his world. If he didn't use the tactics he uses, he probably would be dead along with all the other ponies. There is a reason he's thriving.
Also why do you guys need to bitch about how you don't like how the character turned out. This isn't your story, and I trust Kudzu has a plan for why he is like that. All of the ignorance is driving me up the fucking wall. Good day.
Disappointed in the lack of female baddies...
Oh well! I'll manage....somehow...
Sunset had a sunrise...
Night Stallion is proving to be a ponified Apocalypse...with a very narrow mindset. Probably due to fighting things of the demonic nature...and thus turning him into one of them in the process.
5930609 The Night Stallion IS backed against a wall. Did you miss the part about how he only holds one city and that their enemy is the eldritch abominations from hell? He's only just now able to start pushing back against the demons, and credits the fact that the current ponies under his control are stronger than their ancestors just from the "strong survive, weak die" as the reason. In his mind, weakness must be completely removed to ensure survival of the species as a whole.
5930732
You understand his sickness. He is becoming what he is fighting.
5930637 it actually expected him to see his men as resources rather than people, act like a tactician rather than a barbarian. there is no way they could ahve survived otherwise. seriously, he managed to kill an alicorn. even if left mortal, it takes brains to kill an alicorn. else you just get squashed.
its simple tactics. you do not have you non combatants fight at all. their purpose is to do the things that would distract the warriors from theri duty. such as cooking, armor repairs, figuring out new weapons, etc.
There is a sequence in the second book in the "Duna" series that remember me of this chapter. One of the desert warriors, while conquering another planet, saw a vast sea...and felt his will to fight, to kill, dissapear with all that water avalaible (remember...in Duna universe water is rare....almost sacred for the desert warriors.
What we see here is the ultimate and ultimost form of despair...weaponized despair...
I though that I understood most of the motivations behind the travelers...I was wrong...I know nothing...that scares me a LOT !
5930735 that is a lie in of itself. if you have nothing but warriors, then you have to remove those warriors to deal with things like repairs, clean up, cooking, weapon designing and combat strategems.
if you ahve other guys specialized towards tasks, then that would ensure survival. the warriors can focus on combat. it is a waste of resources if you kill of your non combatants because it reduces the warriors that can be out on the field.
and considering how inexplicably unintelligent the earth ponies have become, they would be useless to anything short of hard labor. thus they cannot repair, cannot create new magic or tools, cannot repair damaged equipment. thus warriors have to take up that position and not be on the battle lines.
also you cannot say your scientists are 'weak' when they are a bunch of dudes with metaphorical pistols facing up against a tank. it makes no sense.
like saying the navi seals are weak when you set them up against the hulk or something.
5930717 People bitch because they have no control.
5930743 It makes one want to pity him...just a little. Monsters are not born, but there are many ways to make them.
5930762 no its because he is too simple to be a guy who became an alicorn.
more so his methedology would not have allowed them to survive. he is saying they are weak because they are being butchered by something as powerful as he is. this is nothing but comic book villian, kill my minions for failing against something they obviously could never defeat, behavior.
seriously it would be like giving a group of navi seals a dishonorable discharge for having the hulk beat em up.
i at least expected the guy to be intelligent enough to know when an enemy is too strong to just throw men at. especially considering they figh demons a majority of the time right now.
Wow. This was not a development I could have guessed.
5930759 Yes it wouldn't work, I think thats part of the point. The Night Stallion is clearly insane and values only combat strength, and all the Mirror Travelers believe in his values since he is far stronger than any of them. Not surprising since they've been fighting against the powers of hell itself. They see Bucky's world as weak and an easy conquer so they can use its resources to help retake their own world back, but they are taking more losses than expected. That's why the one commander wonders if it would have been better to just ask for help instead of conquest.
5930759 Lugus is a warrior and he had to make weapons for himself. So do hunters. They also have to care for their weapon. Boadicea is very intelligent but can still defend herself. Boadicea and Lugus are prime examples of what Night would deem strong. They can defend, and therefor their offspring will also be strong and most likely intelligent which will ensure their survival. Pick one: people who can fight but dont understand quantum physics, or people who can use their brain to their advantage but lack the strength to actually do any harm.
5930800 I did a horrid attempt at trying to explain things.. I need more sleep.
5930778 Actually, Joseph Stalin and Adolph Hitler come to mind. More so Der Fuhur because he was grew more and more mentally unstable as his war came closer and closer to home. Comic book villains are based off real people. Look at some Roman emperors. Atilla the Hun. The original Dracula...that Romanian prince. Monsters. All of them. Look at our own mythical people dating back to the Iliad and the Odyssey. Madness has an effect of removing common sense and replacing it with single-minded thought, no matter the cost.
Whoops. I guess that destined Ascension had to go somewhere...and if you can't get a host of the right power level, well just stick a relic of power on and jack that unicorn up to 11!
Sometimes the best field commanders are terrible tacticians. They think in terms of strength and power and can be brilliant in the short term....... but they neglect their logistics. They win in the short term but their army ultimately starves..... night stallion..... you are a fool.
5930800 you need both dude. the demons would have wiped them out by now if they functioned like this. and that makes the scenario a little contrived sense they clearly haven't been wiped out despite having a self destructive methodology.
and these scientists were working towards military discoveries to begin with. if you do not have guys figuring out how to best breach some new armor the enemy has developed, then your weapons will remain unable to breach that armor.
also i am not talking about maintanence, i am talking about repairing damages. maintenence is needed to keep the weapons functional and strong, but if they break then they will have to rely on the likes of blacksmiths to make repairs. and even if a warrior was equally skilled as a blacksmith, you would keep off the battle field to begin with because his value is more for the weapons he can craft and repair than the number heads he hacks off.
and sending him to battle puts him at risk of dying, thus removing a skilled blacksmith as a resource.
5930809 and it often leads to self destruction. happened to hitler. it even happened to stalin. the paranoid bastard died at an old age, but the autopsy revealed that he was likely in constant pain because his paranoia and fear did a number on his circulatory system. clots in the brain and such caused from the constant stress of his own insanity.
and often enough madmen make terrible decisions that make their nations weak. look at north korea. that is proof even in america where we have too many idiots making decisions, if on a thankfully, at least for now, lesser scale in comparison.
put simply he would have to be more than just another tyrant, at the very least with a utalitarian viewpoint of the world where everyone serves a purpose, else they are useless. especially since we hellspawn as the enemy. brute force would not stop demons, as they have far more power.
Is there a comma missing after the second 'no'? Considering this is where she starts to fight back.
5930588
We actually have a historical example of this in the Mongolian Hordes. They were basically a standing army marching west, burning and pillaging as they went. They lasted about three generations, then burned out.
Frankly, from what I have read between the lines (and the comments) Night Stallion is the only sane response to his insane world. Unfortunately this makes him completely insane by ordinary standards. Luckily he has not read the evil overlord list.
Also, I was under the impression he stole other! Luna's divinity when he killed her, rather than ascending on his own.
...I hope she took Loki, Bucky, and Fresh Meat with her.
5931090
If he reads the Evil Overlord List we're done. It's over. I've used that to such an extent that my gaming crew no longer allows me to roleplay villainous characters, since I refuse to let myself lose as a plot device and they can't figure out a way to defeat me on their own.
Game over, man.
The slaves on the Mirror Traveler world should be freed and then the remaining population and that psycho Alicorn bastard shall be sealed up with the demons they made deals with.
He
