84 words until 2 million...
More foals, called it
6471095
They're going to the orphanage. This wasn't the century chapter!
6471101 Bucky's adopted so many kids, his house is pretty much an orphanage, only nicer to live in
Phew. Wow. I can't believe we're so close to two major milestones like this. As for ch. 800... to quote the meme, "dis gun be good"
I'm glad there is a way to determine if they are all evil or not. After all, Bucky also committed necromancy. Now, he also did not commit a crime along it, and was punished for it anyway (with a slap on the wrist), but I'd be rather put out if, given a long time and power over the situation, it became open and shut lack of forgiveness.
I woulda liked to see a subversion. Like... if one of the bitter ones has a misplaced sense of righteousness and is savable, whereas one of the calm and good-sounding ones is actually a sociopath who hardly believes others are actually people.
That's a little complicated to convey in a couple thousand words, though...
6471126
We will be seeing this spell again, though not for a while.
By the powers that be... one more
6471138
Does this spell have other effects, depending on the level of corruption? Or are all worth saving (be it by a large margin or small) turned into foals?
By fire be purged!i.chzbgr.com/maxW500/3820615424/h39C344F3/
6471088
No doubt carefully planned that way so that both the 800 chapters and 2 million words are celebrated together.
6471170
The spell finds something redeemable... and redeems it.
The other effects are as Twilight said. A pony's own mother won't even remember birthing them. They are burned from the memories of all who know them. They will not be remembered. They will not be mourned. They will not be missed. They will not go down as a martyr.
Of course, the spell takes a bit of time to work, but it works. It is quite literally purging the corruption of necromancy from society one pony at a time. And Sunset Shimmer is only the first.
6471186
A shame that Necromancy is my favorite branch of magic. (although not the type that summons demons from Tartarus).
Edit: If it's to be used on Necromancers, what about those whom are misguided and seeking to speak with past family or bring back lost loved ones? I'm curious on the details of the spell and what the differences are between "barely redeemable" and "near wholly redeemable"
6471186 magic that powerful seems a bit hard to buy, at lesat released by what is just a unicorn. even the fates would have a hard time doing that.
It sounds more like something that the Tree would be needed to produce.
6471194
A bit of a spoiler. Princess Celestia did not create this spell alone. But I won't say who helped her. At least, not yet.
If you recall, Sunset was given just a smidgen of Celestia's magic.
6471191
The spell treats both equally.
Tell me, would you eat a pan of brownies if it had a whole bunch of dog shit baked into it? What about just a little bit?
As for practical application, a pony trying to speak with the undead may or may not get caught. They might never be found. But for cultists who brazenly attack others, for those who kidnap, torture, and mutilate, they will be found, and they will face the flames.
Burn, baby buuuurn...
What !? Somepony had to make that joke !
I believe it was worded, "If they had anything worth saving." Good and Evil doesn't come into it.
Nopony is inherently evil, their life experiences mold them into the creatures we see as adults.
By restarting their souls in new bodies devoid of memory or past sins we see that they get a new start with a clean slate.
But only if something within the core of the self was worth saving.
I imagine Lachesis and Morta sitting on either side of Celly looking down their Thead and seeing if they repeat their mistakes.
If they do, well, The Solar Empress lights their wick.
6471246
This is truer than you realise. I mean, I just got done talking about how Celestia had some help in making this spell... and you pretty much nailed with a clever metaphor.
6471262 10 points to the boney scythe-holding pony abomination !!!
6471219
Pardon me if I don't consider shit-filled brownies the same thing as levels of spiritual/physical corruption.
6471288
But the metaphor works. Shit brownies are shit brownies, no matter how you slice them, and all things considered, they are equal. No shit filled brownie is better than an another.
6471219
What constitutes Necromancy? Binding souls to husks? Demon magic?
What about simply pouring animating magic into corpses to create temporary soldiers? If the latter, is it necessarily dark magic or just unethical? Could someone do this to protect their family in a crisis and not be corrupted? Did I miss some resource explaining it all?
But I am liking the implication that we have more paladins on the way.
6471302
Necromancy is the intentional act of using magic that funnels demons into the world from Tartarus, which endangers others and brings harm to all. Doesn't matter if it is major or minor.
Now, keep in mind, there are dark magic spells that gate in demons from Tartarus, but those are different. However, if the demon slips free and does harm, the end result is the same.
Think of it as a jailbreak. You spring something from prison, you're in a heap of trouble.
6471302 My two cents hee, I may be wrong.
Necromancy is the using of demons to help increase the power of a spell, or to being able to cast spells your natural power level wouldn´t allow. So, in other worlds, is the seek of power using the aid of demons. By its very definition, means a ill-natured search of power.
"But Bucky used necromancy..."
Bucky is not an example. He always have good reasons to use necromancy and, even so, he tries to avoiding using it. And he WAS punished for using it.
But, let´s say, you used, hapenned but, still, there is some good in you. You were misguided, you were in a situation where you had no choice. Ok, here comes a second chance. But only if you´re truly repent from doing it.
I just though something. The pegasus remained a pegasus, but the unicorn turned in an earth pony. Maybe, even after repenting, she wasn´t consuidered worth enough to keep the magic ?
6471288
It's quite the eloquent metaphor, actually. A brownie is sweet and good. Like a decent person. Then there's brownies with dog shit in them. What you think is sweet and good is full of what comes out of your dog's ass, which I imagine tastes ten realms' awful. It doesn't matter if it's a small amount of dog shit, the whole brownie is ruined. Having your essence/nature corrupted even a little bit is STILL being corrupted.
Killing one innocent person just for fun still makes you a murderer, you aren't looked at more favorably just because you didn't kill five. You're still a psychopathic murderer.
Different from rationale corruption, which is just the way you think or do things.
6471327
Both were unicorns. One became a pegasus, the other an earth pony. They get to try again.
6471315
Is Necromancy a nickname or something for it then? Not Infernal Magic or... Demomancy or something?
Which is what I was more or less asking with my prior question. Is there a separate form of necromancy that's more traditional? The puppeteering of the dead, without demonic compact? If those necromancers exist, are they also corrupted by their magic?
6471354
Puppeteering the dead is a form of magic granted by demons. This is not a form of magic granted by harmony, or by the use of dark magic. Raising the dead and the power to do so is granted through demonic influence.
6471359
There we go, that's what I was looking for. So in Chaseverse, there is no traditional 'animation' necromancy. It's all demonic in nature, Hell-compacts and devilish gifts. Yep, send in the Paladins. I've never stopped praising the sun.
6471206 shrugs. celestia isn't a eldritch mcguffin easybake oven. :p
though gotcha. mystery.
6471500 that kinda rhymed.
84 words.
Great chapter!
6471262
6471271
Whoo! I actually guessed because Mara mentioned that she didn't agree with what her sisters were up to and figured if anyone was down with twisting fates with Auntie Celery it was those two.
WOOOOO
6471191
I prefer Knight Enchanter myself, even with the recent nerf.
I also like Spirit Healer, Arcane Warrior, Force Mage, and Battlemage.
6471332
6471300
No it is, to use a really bad pun, a crappy metaphor. Shit brownies were made that way from the start. Those using Necromancy did not begin that way. IF you're going to use a food metaphor, use bread. Fine on it's own, but can get mold and eventually become inedible.
This purging flame seems like an awfully black and white spell for a grey universe with lots of "the ends justify the means" moments. Lyra has had the misfortune of being exposed to Necromantic magic before that has left her scarred. So she's been physically marked by it, does she deserve to be purged by fire? What about some unicorn that was coerced into using Necromancy under the threat of their family being wiped out if they didn't do as told? Do they deserve to be purged by flame for trying to keep their family alive? They still used Necromancy.
So not a fan of the purging flame given it's so black and white in function.
6471940
Sadly I cannot say I'm familiar with any of those.
6471946 Lyra had necro spells forced uppon her. She was, quite literally, raped by necromancy. It was not her choice. The choice to use necro spells is what corrupts the soul...so the purging flames cleanse is that corruption, the willing to bring the ultimost evil uppon this world in order to gain power.
Notice, too, that only in the actual harmonious state of the world a paladin was born, and such powerfull cleansing spell could be created.
6471951
No worries, it's from a game series called Dragon Age, made by Bioware.
It's a VERY long story.
Three games so far; gameplay-wise there are three Character Classes:
Warrior
Rogue
Mage
Each class has battlefield roles they excel at; in general/by default warriors tank, rogues deal damage, and mages control the battlefield.
But they aren't limited to just that.
Classes can specialize, granting new powers and passives, and expanding battlefield roles.
Mage is my favorite class, and the names I mentioned are my favorite specializations for the mage across all three games, in no particular order.
I generally go for a "Combat Medic"-esque build for my player character, charging into battle with my companions, supporting where needed, granting barriers and keeping them on their feet.
And should all else fail, I won't.
Anyway, I'm rambling again, apologies if you weren't interested.
TL:DR - the gist of it is I like the game, and when you said Necromancer, I thought you were referring to the same thing.
6471946
The Purging Flame is intended to be used as a last resort and as a means to find something worthwhile and redeeming about a pony before they go to Tartarus. It is quite literally a cheat spell, saving a pony from a terrible fate, granting them a second chance, and giving a bit of mercy to those who probably don't deserve it. It is Celestia's merciful nature manifested in the form of a magic spell.
To compare, what Celestia is doing is gaming the system, very much like The Fates and Thanatos did when they rebelled against the Omnicorn, and Thanatos found a way to give the slain alicorns a second chance.
It is quite literally a "Please, please, PLEASE, let me find something worthwhile in your soul so that I might save you from what comes for you in the afterlife, because no one deserves that" spell.
It isn't about black or white, it is about a last ditch effort to slow down the endless cycle of suffering that the world has slipped into.
6471985 I cannot remember for the life of me what chapter it was that talked about Lyras experience with necromancy and the one where Bucky "hunted" them down. Anyone know which ones those were?
6472416
603?
6472068
Ah. No, not that. Necromancy and Necromancers far predates Dragon age. For me, if it's available in a game, that's what I'm playing with/as. I also enjoy it in fiction.
6471088 and Chapter 800
6472126
Sounds familiar...
6472759 The clock is ticking...but when the alarm will go off is to everypony guess...
6472126
I imagine it's a lot like cancer.
The flame burns away down their Thread of Fate to a point where they can restart their lives.
If the flame was used on say, Derpy Hooves, it wouldn't do a thing. She is a righteous protector that doesn't need to change.
Now apply that logic to Lyra, if say something got a hold of her and she did things she couldn't live with, it would probably burn her back to a teenager when she was first raped and have her start over from there.
With what we know of Dark Magic (not shadow magic) and Necromancy, it requires pain to function. You have to not only suffer for it, but WANT to suffer for it. So the spells reverses your time spent, removes your scars both physical and mental to a point where you can start again. Not unlike going back to a recovery point when restoring a computers system after a catastrophic crash or the administration of a virus. The spell seems to temporally cut away that magical cancer to a base where the pony can grow and learn again.
Of our three examples, two still had enough worthwhile material in them to warrant them getting reset to infants. Where as one there wasn't enough to save. Until we see more examples I'm withholding judgement on how the spell is in a moral sense.
6474081 My headcannon for the spell work is different.
See, we have three examples of how the spell works. Notice that only the first two, that repented for their sins, where saved. The last one was burned down, ´cause he was defiant, wich means, he did not repent for his sins.
Now, for those that were saved, notice that they started completly anew ! Even with different races. So, IMHO, their very soul was spared, any corruption uppon such souls was burned down and they have a completly new life to try to make things right this time. The only thing preserved was the very core of their souls, all the rest reseted to a blank state. Actually, I wonder why they did not come as completly newly-born foals ?
6474111
Because that would involve breast feeding with perhaps not enough mothers around to do so?
I also imagine they're potty trained so that mess is taken care of.
If you're going to go through the trouble of cleaning up after the mess necromancers made you don't want to have to clean even more after a screaming diaper filled filly or colt.
