Wut...I must remind myself that I have no right to judge the morality of another species in there internal actions. What is good for them is not good for us.
Good story man
Will there be a fluff chapter soon?
4382571
Fluff chapter?
Describe... There are so many different definitions of fluff.
Um... WHAT? Jesus Christ, was that even necessary? When you said Berry was going to start a war, I assumed she was going to tell Bucky's mother off, and maybe give her a good slap or a slug across the muzzle. I also didn't think you literally meant a war war, I thought you meant a feud with the potential for violence. What she did there doesn't come close to being justified, especially since this is the first strike of aggression. She flat out assaulted an unprepared mare and stallion in their owm home in an extremely viscious and brutal manner that just jumped out of nowhere. I don't even care what an unloving, neurotic bunch Bucky's parents were to their son, Berry was 100% in the wrong for the act she just committed. Her physical violence is in no way, shape, or form a better alternative to their psychological and emotional abuse.
At this point, she does deserve to go to jail and court for it. You had her kick hard enough in a specific place to cause the destruction of a womb. Considering you've established through DT and SS that there is no instant magical healing in this fic, the potential for internal hemorrhaging and every consequence resulting from it are logically probable. Jesus H Christ. This really took the wind out if my sails for the fic with how dark this was. Still going to read it for now, but this was frankly disgusting.
4382631
There will be consequences. Big consequences.
Long reaching consequences.
Now... I can agree with Berry and the others wanting to protect their foals, but... the whole feminist thing? So, does that mean she doesn't want Bucky to have an equal part in the raising of their foals? Because that's what's needed, not just the other herd members playing a part, but the father as well.
I can also see her being arrested for grievous bodily harm. It was clear Bucky's mother wasn't going to fight back, and I personally think Berry took it too far.
4382636
Well enough then I suppose. This pretty much removed Berry from anything approaching a positive light.
4382644
Wow, human perspectives returned quickly.
Wait. More is coming.
4382645
All characters have flaws to some degree.
Bad things happen. Good things may come from them.
Dinky and the bees.
So awesome!
Sorry but your stories are continuously better and better than every one before it
Good grief. I can understand the first hit, but that last one? Waay too much. I honestly think you shouldn't have had that bit in there, it's a bit too cruel for a character like Berry. Although if she was a bit drunk it might've made more sense.
...... I can't believe no one has done this yet....
i3.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/000/366/396/f8a.gif
And the thing is.... I... don't think it's done escalating yet
4382645
Take a minute, imagine for a second that you are the child of a hopelessly oppressed people. You grew up hearing stories about what others did to your family, hating people you'd never even met for hurting your Uncle, or Grandpa, in ways that never really healed. Imagine that because of these people a great injustice has been done, and is still being done to this day. Now imagine that you've grown up, fallen in love, and are deathly afraid of losing everything. Then, you find out that the person you love more than anything, the person you want to start a family with is broken. Hurting inside just like your family; and those people you hate? It's pretty much all their fault. Worse yet, they took something you found sacred, treasured above all other values, and twisted it; used it as a tool to hurt and to humiliate. But the worst part, the very worst part? They got away with it, again. And now you're absolutely terrified about what the future has in store for your new family in world that lets people like that do whatever they please and never get punished for it.
Rationally, what Berry did was brutal, excessive, and wrong; but emotionally? I get where she's coming from.
That was a very satisfying chapter, but i'm kinda worried about the shitstorm that will come from this.
Two more things:
1.) Yeah, a story where the good guys just make small mistakes can be cute. A "Nice Job Breaking It, Hero" moment that can make or break a tale can be considered epic. Hell, just a shouting match with Bitters' parents might have been sufficient alone and generated enough conflict, within and beyond herd/flock, to power the tale. But when the conflict is the grievous bodily harm inflicted in an act of desperation, rage, and love? This gives this arc a nuclear power reactor. Especially she just jeopardized the acceptance of the herd dynamic.
2.) So wait.... Birthday Party - Generosity Dinky and the Bees ultimately led up to Kindness. .....I will guess that this arc is Loyalty. With the letters/Bon-therapy sessions not really being an act of Honesty to the herd (just to Bucky himself, at least that's how I'm perceiving it....), I'm guessing 3 more arcs beyond this one, then?
(Sidenote: I'm waiting until it's declared in story that the Dinky Want it Need it incident could be considered the Act of Magic.)
4382842 at someone else thought about it
4382842
I don't buy it. Brutality doesn't cease being brutal just because the perpetrator was emotionally driven. There was no sufficient reason to ruthlessly beat a mare when she is down.
Oh boy this is gonna be fun
Somepony's going to the moon
4382917
And I agree with you, but there is a world of difference between a crime of passion and a dish best served cold.
4382842
Oh thank Goddess somebody understands the lessons of the highland clearances and all of the bloody Sundays that have taken place.
4382935
Not as much as you think. It being a crime of passion would mitigate her punishment in real life somewhat, but her dumb ass wouldn't walk away with a slap on the wrist. People hurt and kill each other often times because they're pissed off. They still go to jail for a number of years. Bucky's parents were emotionally retarded as is the recurring trend with high society unicorns. Their parents were almost certainly as well, which in turn was taught and passed down. While it's relieving Bucky beat the odds and escaped that trend, as some extraordinary people are wont to do, it doesn't make his parents the devil himself.
They ought to take responsibility at this point assuredly, but I don't see that happening now, nor do I think they even should after what his mother and her butler went through. If they don't get their day in court, you can be assured they will at least try to get it with the new cycle of violence Berry more than likely set in motion. Because at this point, they're almost certainly passionately driven themselves. "Go Berry." /deadpan
4382600 cuddles, Is that better? :P
4382979
Bear with me.
Bloody Sunday
Look at that bloody list.
Just to open up your eyes a bit.
Now, a bit about the highland clearances.
Imagine if you will, a group of people killing you and making you and your kind disappear. Imagine if it was against the law for you to exist. Imagine hundreds and hundreds of years of arson, rape, murder, and theft.
Read about the tragedy of the MacGregors and how the MacGregor children were fed to dogs.
Now, imagine if you will, you were tied up and forced to watch as all of your children were taken from you, the english ones set aside, and the Scots one each taken, brutally gang raped by soldiers, until eventually, they died. And then, you were forced to watch as your beloved wife was also given the same treatment.
Now, wait, it gets better...
They let you live!
After they beat you, and potentially castrate you, they send you off to this new place called America to be a slave, where you are a slave with so many other people, like those folk from Africa. And you spend the rest of your life in slavery, haunted by the images of watching your children and your wife raped to death.
Or, you get packed up and shipped off to Australia, penal colony.
Either way, a fate worse than death.
My first Scots ancestor in the this country was a SLAVE.
Some of my family comes from those precious few that survived Wounded Knee and then faded into the west.
And there has been more than one incident at Wounded Knee.
I grew up with constant stories about the white devils coming to massacre us. I grew up on reservations. My mother lost custody of me at a young age, I had my hair forcibly cut, one of my names taken away, and I was forced into a system that only recognised ONE of my cultural identities. The other was persona non grata. Everything my family said would happen happened. The white devils came and took me.
And no, I am not racist. I merely use the words said to drive home a point.
Berry did what she did as a product of desperation, one that most people will NEVER understand. Not unless you've been there.
I hope this makes her actions a little clearer.
In other news, I got less than 2 hours of sleep after finally going to bed at six am. Yay.
4382904
Reread chapter 30.
Loyalty took place as the entire town was chasing Bucky, and Bucky held everything together to protect Dinky, including overcoming his own magical compulsions.
Bucky commits an act of generousity during the birthday party
Dinky commits an act of kindness during the hospital visit
Bucky commits an act of loyalty keeping Dinky safe
You just witnessed one of the elements take place in chapter 39.
Can't say which one, but it shouldn't be too hard to guess. Berry is responsible for this one.
The last of the five will come at the conclusion of the war.
And magic... Well, in this case, magic is not friendship...
4383027
Oh, cuddles with the pony making bone are coming...
Wait, coming?
Poorly worded, I blame my lack of sleep.
Thanks for updating this morning. Was telling myself I needed my The Chase fix when I woke up.
4383063 I know that feeling :P
please stop using SNOOT it is starting to physical hurt my eyes when i see it in your stories even though i love them is burn, a snoot is a camera flash cover a SNOUT is a animal's elongated nose.
4383093
WRONG!
A snoot is the fleshy bit at the end of a horse's nose. Filled with thousands of nerves and oh so very sensitive.
It also means nose.
Look it up in the dictionary for crying out loud!
4383093
Snoot
4383098
4383102
snoot
sorry my sister is big on photography so this is the first thing to come to mind
First things first: so far i loved each and all of the chapters, that simple. The only way to improve any of the last chapters would be make then longer, so i could read more of this marvelous writing of yours.
Now, the bad things.
I´m not against this surge of violence by it´s own, but the way it happened, considering how smooth all the others events happened so far, did not sound (sound ?) well for me. The way this change in the status quo was to abrupt. Sure, we had other break points, but they made sense in the way things were happening. This sounds (again, sounds ?) like it just happened out of nowhere. Sorry, i really love what are you dong, it´s just my humble opinion, but, still, this is the only chapter, so far, that seems (finally, no "sound" here) it doesn´t fit in the whole history.
Sorry for any grammar errors, english is not my native language. And, please, don´t stop the history. It is the most fantastic thing i´ve read here since Past Sins and Twitch in Time.
Sheers
I gotta admit the extra kick to the lady parts felt wrong with me. I can understand Berry's point of view but where im from that called an assault and is still wrong no matter what reason you have. Looking forward to the war though.
And a special definition of Snootful for Berry Punch
snoot·ful
ˈsno͞otˌfo͝ol/
noun
enough alcoholic drink to make one drunk.
"they're tongue-tied until they've had a snootful"
Another word that bugs me is FLANK.
The flank is not the ass. It is the meat just behind the ribs, between the ribs and the hips.
Ever seen two horses have a dominance dispute?
They go right for the genitals.
Especially mares. If one can get the other one down, a kick or a bite is sure to come to the loser.
Stallions do it too.
But mares are especially bad about it. Sexual mutilation happens with one savage bite.
Berry was polite and civilised. She used a hoof.
Remember, these are not humans in pony suits.
These are attempts at making these ponies aliens.
4383034
Unless Bucky's parents literally took part in that, it's not relevent to the situation. They are not the leaders of unicorn-kind. They are no more to blame for that than Sparkler or Dinky are. Unless being a unicorn makes you evil by default.
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hate_crime
Berry is just as much guilty of a hate crime now as the general population of unicorn ancestors were then, if getting revenge on their descendants is part of her motivation for invading that mares home to assault her. The way you're selling it sounds like she was itching for an excuse to hurt what she perceived as a bad unicorn, made all the sweeter by the fact that she was a neglectful mother. I don't believe the mares on tthe the train ride back would laud her actions if they actually knew what she did. On that point, I literally have no idea what feminism had to do do with sucker punching and summarily beating down a helpless unicorn.
4383162
I guess you don't get it.
That's okay though.
I didn't expect everybody to "get it" I expected it to shock people.
Berry is pissed at Bucky's parents for what they did. The past came bleeding out with all of that anger. The two sort of tied together.
What Berry did was wrong, of that there can be no doubt.
Pause for a moment and think about all of the placements of the elements in this story. Was the generousity intentional? Did the kindness happen through one simple act? Did loyalty happen through a simple painless test?
No, everything thus far has been accidental and completely unknown to the characters committing them, as friendship manifests the different elements due to their relationship with one other.
Berry said some very honest words... And made a very honest mistake.
4383162
OK, so i´ll change a little what i said before. Berry´s attack sounds reasonable in that context...but i feel the context was not stressed enough, showed enough to us in order to sounds (argh, sounds, again !) acceptable. It was hinted several times, but, for me (i maybe wrong) so far it was not an issue that big to led to this break point.
Again, all my thanks for your effort and slepelees night to bring us such a good fiction.
4383054
Hmm. An excuse to reread the whole thing for a fourth time.
Okay!
Edit: but aww, minor spoilers! or maybe not. ... I just like getting things clarified in later chapters but that's me.
4383126
Wow, I can only assume the ignorant philistines from Princess Luna's Suicide Solutions must now be visiting The Chase section of comments.
Downvoting a comment because it describes actual horse behaviour? Really? I mean, what happened here?
Lovely. Good job.
4383178
I think I get it just fine to be honest. I know your intentions with these tragedies in regards to the elements. The first two times were accidents made manifest by a child, and as such are understandable. What Berry did was no accident, and she is a full grown mare. If beating someone within an inch of their life is what constitutes an "honest mistake", then I hesitate to ask what would make a truly unjustified act of aggression on her part. Berry did not attack them in direct defense of Bucky, she attacked those two for revenge on something they literally had no part in, and for something that took place years prior.
4383269
It was about Bucky though. The initial flame was because of Bucky.
The fuel came from her own feelings. She let those feelings cloud her judgement.
The alicorn perspective is coming up next chapter. Celestia and her fancy viewing screens.
Hm! Interesting interpretation (version?) of feminism from a pony perspective: it's completely devoid of the gender conflict/contrast that is human feminism (specifically the modern versions). It's not collective bargaining against males who are holding you down, it's collective family bargaining against the rest of society, who may not have your family's best interest's at heart, and probably don't understand its needs. Even the argument that inexperienced parents need some help from more knowledgeable people falls flat because the benefit of the herd is using the collective knowledge to do a better job.
Calling it feminism may be a little misleading, though. Early suffragettes used the term feminism to contrast the rights that women have with the rights that men have, while asking for more rights that men have, whereas here feminism is advocating a return to rights they once had, not to equalize the rights between the sexes, and it's something that would, apparently, affect fathers as positively (and in the same way almost) that it would for mothers, so why is it that it's portrayed as a "mare's issue"?
4383282 Just wondering are all of the members of Clan Pickled earth ponies or are there Pegasus and Unicorns with them as well ?
I am going to call that rant the Berry Pissed Manifesto.
Also, that beatdown is definitely going to have some massive consequences. It went from satisfying to cringe-inducing very quickly, and now there's a war on. Still, I have to appreciate the symmetry; just as a war between the noble houses killed herd marriage, so may one resurrect it.
Looking forward to more. But seriously, Berry, damn.
4383282
In these statements, I can agree with you. I'm deeply curious as to how Queen C will handle this situation. Probably not to my or Bucky's parents satisfaction I assume though, for the sake of her project. Maybe I'll be surprised though.
4383283
More of it is coming... But human feminism doesn't apply. They share a name and little else.
Equine feminism is all about a militant focus on the family, delegating tasks to various members, and making sure the father has enough time at home to spend with his foals because they need a positive male role model, otherwise, how will they build a functioning herd of their own someday?
Feminism in this universe is centered around the restoration of the herd structure and the enforced monogamy put in place by an oppressive mare named Celestia.
It is literally a group of mares in a silent war with another mare over what they believe is best for their foals.
It also celebrates fatherhood and the respect of a trusted male figure... Barley in Berry's case. Good males are to be cherished, celebrated, and loved because good fathers make good foals, and they are a valuable asset.
It is a completely different mindset and it kinda frustrates me that people keep wanting to place an entirely too human perspective on it.
Horsethink!
4383288
Reread story, make sticky notes of random details.
The war between Clan Pickled and House Avarice took place because of inter-tribal marriage.
Berry's mother was a unicorn. So is Barley. Beer goggles do a pony good!
Pony feminism in a nutshell. A good father for your foals is worth going to war over.
4383319 Thank you
