Slings are cool...
Such a primitive weapon, but still effective, given the right situation. A rock slung is still pretty damn deadly.
But... alas, such a cool weapon is not very effective for long range engagements, the projectiles don't fly as true, they lose momentum more easily.
But they're really cool anyway.

A flung spell jar with a load of fey-fire makes up for a loss in accuracy.
Bewarb of typos.

My neighbor owns a turkey and chickens. We ourselves own chickens. The turkey makes a delightful family pet and has never even been slightly aggressive.
5353206
Domestic turkeys ain't scary.
5353174 When in doubt, chuck a jar out
5353208 Domestic Turkeys are like Guinea Pigs. Bred to be Fat, Slow, and Lazy.
5353208 The turkey is actually wild, it just took up living with them.
I have nothing wrong with single mothers. I actually support them. Usually with fivers.
5353236
It's biding its time.
Turkeys are eeeeeeevil.
5353240 The turkey is a delight. It defends the chickens from local dogs.
I myself am partial to chickens.

I hate that I have a second chin while looking down.

Support single moms! Slip a tip to a stripper.

Yeah... more or less.
Wild turkey and moose, though, are dangerous, and Swans are extremely vicious. They'll attack with very little provocation. Giant white birds of prey at heart. Damned, dangerous animals. I don't care if they're 'graceful as fuck', they're still menaces!

Actually, I can't remember for the life of me Who that therapists kid is.....I've gone back like 10 chapters, a little help?
I normally do not like Diamond Tiara. However! she is doing her best to change and that deserves recognition. I want that psychiatrists tail for a trophy on my lodge pole.
5353333
Steeplechase.
5353280
Celestia doing duck impressions change nothing.
In fact, in this case, they only reinforce my opinion.
Extra word there. At least a kiss from Sentinel to DT would be sweet now.
We found a way to restrain them... Their jaws, at least.
Moah, poor Helia. As if single motherhood itself isn't hard enough.
5351861
Well, I don't think I did anything too impressive, but thank you.
Now I'm gonna leave before I further clog up this story's comments. I mean, within 16,000 comments, there has to be quite a bit of off-topic spam, but that doesn't mean I'm going to make it worse.
5353478
Actually, a lot of the discussion has to do with the complexity of the story and certain elements. There are some very encyclopedic posts about certain subjects or themes that stretch out over 100+ chapters or even over 300 chapters.
There are also moral and ethical debates, discussions about the decisions made by various cast members, predictions, theories, and much wailing and gnashing of teeth.
It is a story people like to talk about and a lot of folk have something to day. Hence, 16k comments.
5353478
Also, we just recently had a discussion about the danger of turkeys... um, there is a lot of random stuff brought up because of elements in the story.
5353563
Welcome back!
well i think the end of the chase is near. think it is gonna end with the psyche's funeral and it turns out he was the badguy of the series all along or something.
5353586
Naw, the Chase is only beginning. The foals haven't even been born yet. That's when the heart of the story takes place.
5353588 mostly a joke. though that doc is screwed.
5353208 What about domesticated TurDuckins? Also, I STILL enjoy this story. LOVE IT!!
I still remember a time I for some reason chewed on a golf ball-sized wad of bubblegum. Real range of motion test for your jaws, that.
And again, I lament the shortness of your chapters. The update rate is nifty and leaves me itching for more all day long but so often it would be nice to just sink into 10k words and really absorb myself in the world you craft.
5353172 The Romans used shaped lead slugs in their slings and the Toltecs and Aztecs used staff-slings to hurl fist sized projectiles accurately at long distance. In parts of Europe and the middle-east, the staff-sling was used to lob stones over castle walls during sieges.
Should be hefted.
5353756
I am aware they are surprisingly effective, even at range... It looks like the big reason they were not used is that they were unwieldy. Needed a lot of space, slow rate of fire. Apparently they had better range than bows until long/compound bows. It is probably still a bit more difficult to aim, but in an expert's hands versus an expert in another muscle-powered ranged weapon (bows, typically) I can't make that claim with confidence.
Slings = Cool. Slings = Underrated.
I'm going to go back to getting squads of slingers in Rome Total War 2... well tomorrow.
Wait... don't the Cakes run the bakery? I am surprised at this if it is the case.
Heh, good colt.
5353250 Behold, the dreaded pirate Whitestrake, and his evil par... er, evil chicken?
5354042
Different bakery.
5353659
Back when I was a kid still doing Halloween candy runs, I often chewed one load of gum and then added more over time to re-add flavor. I could end up with some ridiculously large wads before deciding to start over.
As for the chapters, I agree that 2-3k words updates breaks the immersion when you read them only one at at a time. On the plus side, you have the option of checking for updates every 2-3 days and get your 10+k words that way. Personally, I like updates in the neighborhood of 5-7k words: enough to get back in-context and move things along while still short enough that I can usually read it in one shot without worrying about interruptions. Many of the fics on my tracked list are in reading limbo because I rarely feel like committing to reading a 10-25k chapter.
My GOD.
How is this even possible?!
376 chapters!
There has to be an award for that!
5354238 If not we should make one. Just to find Kudz and present it to him, for being so amazingly awesome
Is Bucky going to make a new set of armor, one that improves on the old armor, with better magical wards and defenses?
Or is he going for robes now? If so, could he enchant it to be like mithril, ultra-lightweight and nearly indestructible.
Perhaps it could have a pocket of extra-dimensional space to store those nutrient-dense snacks he had with his armor. Maybe it could be like one of the later versions of the Iron Man armor; small enough to carry around but when you need it you can quickly equip it (that's where the extra-dimensional space comes in handy, storage!)
Or perhaps an armor set that uses absorption rather than resilience. Retribution seems right out since it would reflect back on the attacker, which would hurt them and that goes against Bucky's code. The idea I have is similar to shadow-diving, but infusing that into the armor, it would be like wearing a black-hole; anything that approaches it would simply vanish into it, similar to the gunpowder-searching golems and the spell jars' intention charms.
That way, it would suck up a deadly fireball hurled at Bucky by a mirror-traveler or demon but would be completely harmless if Harper throws her food at him.
I agree that the armor was a crutch that "excused" him from learning magical combat technique, but he is still a pony and therefore just as vulnerable. Even with his claw, as powerful as it is, and his fulgurite skeleton, he is quite literally a glass cannon; he can dish it out but is nearly defenseless.
I agree he needs to learn more about magical combat, since no amount of cleverness helps when your enemy can throw you around like a rag doll or nullify everything you throw at them.
Forgive me if I seem long-winded, but I feel that the armor was a part of Bucky, not just the fact that only he could use it, but it was a symbol of consequence, one that said: "I want to be your friend, and I don't want to hurt you, but if you are bad, I'll stop you, and if you refuse to be good, then this is what you're gonna get." Now that's gone. I don't think Bucky would just abandon the concept entirely. War is fought just as much with symbols as it is with weapons and words.
Of course, this is your story, so if all this is just rubbish to you then I understand. I just think the mithril-absorption armor is something he would come up with since that would solve his crutch due to him having to improve on his weak defense and he would regain a powerful symbol.
And now Derby is fucked. He will soon have the Lord of Winter, Incinerator of Griffonholm, Exploder of Las Pegasus, ect. on his case. And by extension, Steeplepaste will as well. I CANNOT WAIT>!
5353174
Can we get spell jars filled with enchanted piss? I play too much Team Fortress 2 to not suggest this.
?
5354509
Wait, found it, was pasting in the misspelled word "angery" which was not in the sentence.
5354327
There is a reason the Myrmidons go through strength training, like Moonbow is doing, wearing iron weights and shackles. It is so they can wear several hundred pounds of un-enchanted plate mail and not be slowed down by it.
Any sort of highly complex armor can and will be un-enchanted by a group of well trained unicorns working in unison. First go the spell wards, then go the featherweight spells, etc, until the armor becomes a liability.
Only parts of his skeleton have been infused with fulgurite, he is still quite fragile and vulnerable.
The armor was a crutch. There are better ways to achieve invulnerability should Bucky desire them.
I rather like the reflective armor. Bucky is not hurting them they are doing it to themselves. if you don't attack him you don't get hurt
poor sentinel
Taffy Sentinel is my favorite.
6634645 play epic war music will he eats taffy and you get that seen
Twelve? Hell, I've managed to fit in at least seventeen before!
... That can be taken in many disturbing ways.
