5347772 ........ you did not seem to actually pay attention. while she stayed in the background in the events, before hand she was actively interacting with her friends and added a more cynical tone to them. she did not feel like she had any room.
by the end of the movie however she was far more comfortable and expressive, more than before.
what she grew into by the end dude. not what she was like in the middle, where it would make sense she would stay in the background.
and she had considerable characterization. she was a redeemer, a character seeking for a place after escaping from the dark. she was having a hard time making decisions for herself, and by the end that had passed.
....... do not see that about the friendship reports to be honest. shrugs.
Things are getting interesting. And ash crapping golems are always epic too.
5347772 "I'm in a much better place now" that is what she said. she was better than she was before, but suffered with doubt of herself.
To be honest, if one of these fuckers told me not to litter, I'd listen.

Link is dead.

okay first of all, one musical number at the end of a movie does not change a person's character. just like every other character in MLP you do not go from the Super badass loner to paragon of friendship after 1 event. the redeemed villian always has the character trait of the inner darkness. in sunset this manifested as for cynicism, anti-social behaviour, and self doubt. these traits would not just disappear at the end I'm a single movie. especially when the only change for the character was acceptance within the group and a confidence boost. statement at the end where she said "This is where I belong." was said in resignation, the whole movie I felt like sunset wanted to go back to Equestria but couldn't. every time someone brought up her going Demon just felt like she wanted to run away. but at the end it felt like she was saying if I've got to be stuck somewhere this ain't so bad. . All that has happened in this movie I doubt they're just going to simply forgive her there are still going to be people who bring up your past actions. I feel that Kudzu he has portrayed sunset perfectly and I still don't see how any potential is being wasted with her even by your ideaI of her. potential implies that her full character has not yet been realized if she came into the story as a fully realized character there would be no growth and she would be a stagnant character.
That actually makes a surprising amount of sense
5347858 Eww, 40K
... Because she had a couple months of combat?
Sparkler's place as the Commander of the Ponyville Watch has always felt arbitrary, like she has just as much skill or right to become this person as anyone else, she gets it because her father is the prince (like how Rising Star is a total amateur smith, but got his own forge and royal commission for the same reason) and because she had the idea first, but now an experienced soldier (if he's only a courier) is cowing over her "voice of commanding authority" that she got from... osmosis? It feels really arbitrary that she would suddenly be super commanding and threatening, when she had no experience in commanding or ability beyond "can turn into rock" and now she's suddenly so superior and bossy and commanding she can boss around Flash like he's a wimp.
Especially considering that there is no reason for her to be bossy in this case. If he's her second in command of a peacekeeping organization that is currently doing a toy drive, what's the benefit of being the "asshole better-than-you boss"?

I kind of pictured a glass version of marshmallow from frozen.

Do NOT LITTER!!!!!
5347908
Some lead, some follow. Flash likes to follow, Sparkler likes to lead.
**shrugs**
5347908
That last part was the final test. Flash passed it.
5347694 not seeing it at this level.....like I said, was not seeing this concept at all when I heard she was gonna appear. sunset in ther movie was defined and had enough of an impact that it created a similar character expectation as with any other characters. not seeing much of anything of the character we saw at the end of rainbow rocks in this character. at the end of equestrian girls maybe, not rainbow rocks.
5347924
5347908
Sparkler spent months training her people, learning leadership skills from her father and brother. Training with them fighty mares back in the isles. I don't find it that far of a stretch considering there is a considerable lack of leadership now.Flash on the other hand has no real leadership roles save for guard work.most likely enlisted level, while he might have more time in service I doubt any skills that would endear him to be more than Watch comander.
5347933
Already established. I already told you why too. When I created her character, I hadn't seen Rainbow Rocks yet.
I HAVE ALTERED SUNSET SHIMMER!
cdn.screenrant.com/wp-content/uploads/James-Earl-Jones-Darth-Vader-Star-Wars-Rebels.jpg
PRAY I DO NOT ALTER HER FURTHER.
5347928
The last part of the test that... he's meek and will submit to her will? I mean, he's suddenly meek and submissive even though he seemed sensible and relaxed the rest of the conversation... And it's not like he's deliberately doing this to show respect of the chain of command, no, this is his instinctive reaction to simply follow when led because he's... naturally submissive? Has a slave mentality like the griffons? Is a worthless commoner rank-and-file soldier when Sparkler is now an amazing and superior noble officer?
Sparkler apparently just has a thing for bossing around males and always finds that they are meek and submissive whenever she tries. It casts the whole thing in an unpleasant light.
5347950
Buck Sergeant Sparkler likes whipping ponies into shape.
5347954
No... the test was for something else.
5347957
Well then... I'm afraid I missed whatever the test was, because the last part seemed to be her confirming that he's rightfully submissive and terrified of her and satisfied when he is. I'm guessing that there is a followup by how you weren't specific, so I guess it's patience time.
5347881
Yes it is. Isn't it great?
People outside the fandom sometimes say "what good can come from males of teen age and older watching a little girl's cartoon about ponies?"
I respond ( or i would if I wasn't still a closet brony ) "Epic novels motherbucker!" And then point to the Chase. Kudzu has a goal of breaking a million words before year's end. This was first posted in late April of this year. So awesome !
Are you new to the Chase? I haven't seen you around before in the comments.
5347933
really, because I have seen more growth from her in the few scenes she's been in this fic tan the entire Rainbow Rocks movie.
5347951
As I have stated before dispite becoming a redeemed charecter she's not much different from the end of EQG. Are you completely writing off the RR movie as if it didn't happen or just for Sunsets Charecter?
5347969
Look at this from practical leadership terms.
In the event of a crisis, can you have two leaders, each shouting over one another to give orders? Or only one?
Sparkler is used to assuming command during times of crisis. Think about some of her moments during the Isles arc.
Mostly, she is content to simply allow things to happen, but when a crisis comes, she assumes control. Here, we saw Sparkler making sure that if there was a crisis, her future control was secured.
Simple practical leadership, the sort of stuff they hold seminars and leadership expositions for and people pay 500 dollars to learn about from some guy in a polo shirt, greasy hair, and all too perfect teeth.
5347976
Yeah, but chain-of-command doesn't mean "I terrify my subordinates!" And you make it clear that Flash's response wasn't one a sensible one, it was an instinctive fear reaction. Healthy leadership comes from respecting the position of the leader, not fearing their voice because you're not worthy.
So maybe my problem wasn't with Sparkler barking orders and Flash following them (chain of command and all that, even though I still think it's... arbitrary's the wrong word, but Sparkler wasn't put in charge because she was already the best for the job, but because she had the inspiration and political resources to start the organization), but that Flash didn't respond with "She is now the commander and I am proving to her that she is because I respect that" but with "Ohgod the officer's yelling at me me she's so scary!"
5347969
it's a test of charecter, Flash never pulled rank on her, never touted his military experience over her, didn't try to use Twilight as a connection to get the position. He is good natured and unfazed by strange and sudden accusations and is willing to unquestioningly follow orders. The as are good traits that make a good second in comand.
5347983
He's a soldier who has been conditioned all of his life. How else would he react?
5347988
... With respect, not fear? I mean... I already claimed in the previous comment that command doesn't need to be about fear.
I mean, if this was intended to seem like a character weakness for Flash, that he responded with fear instead of respect and that this response indicates at least a few self-worth issues, then that's good, but the way it's written it seems very much like the opposite: that it's just "the way it is" and it's praiseworthy that Flash is afraid of Sparklers loudness and superiority because she is superior. Flash is a loser, Sparkler's a winner, and the respect that seemed to permeate the rest of the conversation doesn't matter because now he's her willing and terrified subordinate, and that's just how command works.
5347971 yeah i'm new, just found this today, and a goal to reach a million words you say? >.>
5348033
Before the end of the year. It'll be a lot longer than a million words.
5347988 I can only imagine what happens when Twilie plays boss on bed:
Twilie: I WANT YOU HARD AND READ SOLDI...wow, that was fast !
FS: By your command, princess !
5347683
... No, I mean thematically. The multi-toned mane, the also-personal-student-of-Celestia, also able to use the Element of Magic, the only other unicorn canonically shown to be able to teleport, and even their names. Twilight = Sunset. Sparkle = Shimmer.
5348033
*Pshaw* that is just the end of the year goal. There is still a lot of story that hasn't been told. I wouldn't be surprised if the story passed 1.5 million before wrapping up. And that doesn't include side stories like the Lost Chapters (the explicit sex scenes, these are actually important to the story development) The Catch (a sort of prequel that happened 200 years before The Chase and gives insights into several characters later introduced in the Chase), and others.
a while back I gave this long and elaborate review/suggested reading guide comment for how to get into the Chase. I'm going to go find that and redraft it as a blog post on my page or possibly the group page so that I can refer people to it without asking them to jump to a chapter in the 300's and search through those probably spoilery comments.
I don't think Twilight would survive the humiliation of her letters having any typos
5348073
She can blame Spike.
Plausible deniability.
5348033 good luck catching up friend. It will take effort but it is so worth it
5347902
Problem with 40k, you filthy heretic? :|
5347985
Honestly, while not falling back on nepotism or trying to "hold his experience over her" are praiseworthy, the reason why Sparkler has this position is that her father is Bucky. If her father wasn't Bucky, her idea to create a town watch could have been ignored, or considered and probably politely declined, or someone else would have been put in charge. The only reason she had the influence to get this position, most likely (not like it would be impossible for another civilian to start a guard... but that it's very unlikely anyone would take them as seriously as they did Sparkler, and the fight would probably be more uphill) is because her father has political connections to get her the (admittedly limited) resources to pay her guards and to be official officers of the law. She would have no ground to stand on if he tried to use his position with Twilight to indicate anything without her being a hypocrite.
Also, if instead of trying to hold his experience over her, he said "I am experienced in being a guard, therefore I am worth having this position" he would seem confident in his ability to be worth the position. Like a resume to be a guardsman.
The whole good natured and unfazed by strange accusations idea went straight out the window when it came to how he unquestioningly followed orders. Hard to be good natured when you're afraid, and he was definitely fazed by a filly screaming at him, it was just played as good that he reacted with fear.
5348095
By his own words and admission, he wanted to serve and have purpose again.
It is what he is comfortable with. It is his nature as both a pony and a pegasus. He's a pegasus, Sparkler is a unicorn, the natural order of things played themselves out.
5348088 Not at all, I was just trolling my friend. We like to have... discussions about the tech of Halo and 40K.
5347951 you had a design before but still connect rainbow rocks into this whoel thing. she is kinda essential, as is her growth......
either way, cannot shake a feeling of lost potential. would I say that the movie version is better than your version?........ yes I would. no malice intended, not denouncing or negativity in purpose. simply that I see a lot more potential in complex interaction with the girl that found her heart in the human world than the pony who is just beginning to reform her identity.
you had plans, and you went with them. no way to fault you for that. sighs.
5348115
5348088
And by discussions, he means he zones out.
5348103 kay I gotta cry racist on dat one.
as a personal thing though I can fully understand. his name is flash sentry, and a sentry is a defender, not a leader.
5348153
Cry racist all you want, that was a bit of a joke.
5348095
No she didn't get the guard started because of Bucky, It was because of all the crime umong refugees. MARES WE'RE BEING RAPED. The guard were making the problem worse. The mayor, the Princess, and mr. Rich all supported her, not just because of who she was, but because she had an idea that held promise. She drove to accomplish her goals and succeeded. Saying "I was in the guard so I have experience" is different from saying "I know what I'm doing because I was in the guard." It's a subtle but key diffrence. And because he was in the guard the less he is qualified to be a police officer. Soldiers don't make good police because their skill set is Is geared for offense rather than defence and investigation. Flash has shown he's not bringing a soldiers ego into this. And that is the point. Police are the public punching bags. They have to sit there all day taking shit from everyone and be able to smile and wave. All day every day getting shit on, if Flash had gotten upset in anyway she might not have taken him.
5348157
DING DING DING DING! WINNER WINNER GRIFFON DINNER!
5348157
But earlier you were just indicating being an officer/soldier is what qualifies Sparkler for being in charge and having her job. If Flash is unqualified for this job, so was Sparkler.
And how was she put into contact with the mayor, the Princess, and Mr. Rich? Because Bucky knew all of them. Because he had political connections. Someone who decided to take matters into their own hands would be fighting an uphill battle to get through to each of them, when they already knew of Sparkler and knew of her deeds, which she accomplished... again because she was Bucky's daughter and he allowed her the power and opportunity to accomplish them.
It wasn't explicit nepotism, but it was a similar kind of thing.
I'm not saying she didn't have a good idea, or that she's doing a bad job or that it was unnecessary, but that it would be harder for her to have accomplished this if it weren't for having access to Bucky's connections and power.
5348162
Weeee, so who do I get to have dinner with? Or is some birdy cooking me dinner. Unless you ment I was eating somebirdy but if that's the case I'll pass I prefer them live and warm.
