...and this, this is the thing that has so far bothered me most about this story. It's probably just my personal feelings, but somehow... this just upsets my stomach seeing her like this... willingly... for so long. And here I was enjoying that everyone was happy for the most part...

Ancient Myrmidons were hung by their thumbs and left to think about what it meant to be a Myrmidon. At any time, they could cry out and be free in moments.
They had that option.
So does Moonbow.
I knew happy times lasted too long
Good ol' ancient city-state training. Break them completely, build something entirely new and without weaknesses.
Well...I'm not really sure what to say, the fact that Moonbow now has to endure this 'training' for a year or more is really sad. I thought there would be more chapters with her and sentinel but then like many times this story has a lot of twists and turns.
Still enjoying it though....Keep it up!
Forgot opening quotation.
Choose or chose?
Both Moonbow scenes:
God... damn it!

Choose. She is making the choice.
5018170
I suppose... I just always worry characters go through this and come back too hardened to be recognized by family anymore.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO...!
5018318
It sounded like she had already made the choice.
5018318 never understood that kind of training. causing pain and breaking down someone too much seems a foolish venture. skill and tough as nailness is important but that kind of training likely smothers creativity. they become so focused on that line of thought they ignore more creative solutions.
5018318 if you want an example, think of Bronn from games of thrones. far from a proffessionally trianed soldier but his sheer experience and unothodox training make him deadly to both classically trained soldiers and even knights.
Guess that answers my question from last chapter...
You know how I said I died from the feels 'only' 20 times?
Make that 21.
Sentinel and Moonbow really do love each other; I mean, I figured as much, but this confirms it for me. The fact that Moonbow is thinking about Sentinel, and that it's that thought that steels her resolve; Sentinel's reaction as well. In a way, that's the most powerful emotional response I've seen from him. I mean, to go numb like that, that's when you've been struck at your heart-of-hearts.
If that's not being faithful, then nothing is.
tough training for a tough filly, Moonbow... Good luck

Then again, Myrmidons in the sense of "Ancient Greek supersoldiers" are also entirely fictional.

It's not about making them tough, I don't think. It's about making them pliable, instilling the desired virtues in them, so that when the order comes, they obey unquestioningly.
Toughness is a side effect.
My one fear is that Moonbow will be completely unrecognizable to the others by the time her training's over, like how Rising is unrecognizable to his mother. After all, years of torture can do wonders to a person's personality, and the forced loss of a name is a good way cause someone to lose their self-identity.
Navy SEALS go through similar training.
yay. i finally caught up last chapter and i checked my favorites and this had updated
then as I was reading this chapter

This is harsh, but all training for elite units is harsh, and the better the unit is, the crazier the training. The SEALs go through a shitload of crap to make it, and the general public knows about them. Imagine the step up taken for a unit that is so elite and effective that almost nobody outside of their commanders realize they exist (which the Myrmidons apparently are).
kinda makes me wonder when Sentinel is going to start his own training.
I can see it now, Sentinel and Moonbow: if it goes bump in the night, it's in for a fight.
5018584
Now I am imagining SEAL seal-ponies.
5018826
They wouldn't be called SEALS though.
KELPIES.
Hey, did you hear that?
**THUD**
I can just imagine what Moonbow is gonna be like when she finished her training.
5018873
Grimglammer. Shadowguard.

Have you been in a fight? Has your life been on the line? Have you needed to protect someone in a situation where neither of you might be alive in the next couple of minutes?
It's not about creativity. It's rare that under stress people suddenly pop up amazing plans and out of the box ideas that work perfectly, let alone work /at all/. You can trick yourself into wasting a window of opportunity to turn a situation around or escape it by relying on 'creativity'. Thus the most desirable trait in these situations is not having your mind filled with different forms of thought, but with instinct. With muscle memory. Reducing the time between 'input of situation' and 'reaction' to almost nothing. Giving you speed of movement and action while adrenaline gives you strength and the ability to ignore pain. A mind not concerned with things like unnecessary thoughts also rarely experiences basic fears, such as flinching when you see an attack coming, which can wind up either killing you or disabling you.
Creative's for planners. Sitting around a map and thinking up strategies. Having the best concepts of how to handle most general situations beaten into your body so that even if your mind shuts down your body can carry them out? That's for high-stress life or death situations. Those are the people who will survive longer, do better. They will be thankful for every drop of sweat, for every split lip, bit of spilled blood, broken bone, humiliating moment. Because they will be alive. While the guy who received softer training and his mind is effectively a jumble of trying to recall situational plans and how to apply them while a knife's being plunged at his chest is going to probably wind up dead.
One of these is the better soldier. Which is why we formed squads originally, placing battlefield tacticians with limited soldiery training on the field to give orders to the properly-trained soldiers who execute them without hesitation, keeping the tactician in his element of planning and relatively safe from harm, to maximize the usefulness of the proper soldiers. Each has different strengths and talents to bring to the others, but alone they are vulnerable in either a few, or many situations.
5019283 brought up bronn from game of thrones. a two bit mercenary, he is far more competent than most hard trained knights displayed in the series despite a clear lack of traditional training. he learned to fight by fighting. he learned to kill by killing. and it made him more competent than most knights. can only think of at least three or four exceptions, and those guys are the best of the best.
Ah man. This sucks. I was getting attached to Moonbow.
Typo:
Or tribe needs a protector.”
Our
Well.... shit, I was not expecting that!
Not going to lie, this made me really uncomfortable. I'm really, really hoping this doesn't have any kind of sexual connotations.
That seems like it would be too far, even for Myrmidons. So, please, tell me that I'm just taking it the wrong way, and that Moonbow's not gonna have that happen.
Duty is heavy as the earth, death lighter than a feather. I just hope the hinted at sexual exploitation that seemed to be hidden in the background was just my imagination.
Made it this far into the story without making a comment but this Myrmidon training is really rubbing me wrong. They are hurting a foal willing or not. This is clearly something made by Luna and it makes me think a great deal less of her for it.
Dat bird.
... But you know, if ponies are even a fraction as diverse as us, at leastone of them enjoyed it
...well, that's something. Very interesting training, my mind goes to the training of Naval Seals, based on what I know they are both very harsh.
Awesome chapter man, awesome chapter we done!
Awww Moonbow, she's got stones...
Freezerburn if best phoenix!
Jesus H. Christ my sides
Call In.... The Shag
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH
A Myrmidon is not created, they are smelted in a crucible of pain and forged through repeated blows to their spirit until their hearts are hardened so that they can perform their purpose without deviation or distraction. The love of their Moon-Mother tempers them so that they do not become bloodthirsty weapons.
(Why am I imagining a barren field covered in blades now?)
I don't know if someone else has offered this for the Myrmidons theme but it works for me.
