Poor Keg Smasher liked the little demonic beast he found more than the scared and sorrowful cub.

Sign of the sickness that both he and Bucky have.
Interesting...
Keg smasher is best pony
And I have literally just realized what his name actually is, not just nouns.
I'm a numpty
What was that thing?
The saddest people smile the brightest?
Keg said some powerful words in the end of it
So there were other Kelpies... And everpony Moonbow knew before Bucky is dead.
Why didn't we hear the invasion was this bad...?
The moment Bucky asked the last question I knew what keg would answer. I just fucking knew it. Although I thought in my head "we take a gun to our temples and comit our last act of violence"
5862506 WE knew it, it wasn´t detailed, but several times Luna and Celestia mentioned to Bucky how The Isles situation was bad. And how they couldn´t send more troops, due to the few remaining not being enough, spreading towards The Isles, The Sea of Grass and other places. At somepoint a massive recruitment program must happen, considering the worst of the war is still to come...

The griffon war is over. The rebels in Labyrinthia were crushed.
For now, the world knows a peace that it has not known for an age.
But yes, a threat continues to lurk. It is weak now... but with time... who knows?
Keg Smasher has the right of it. Once war is over, everybody hates the people who took part in it even though they did what they had to do. My uncle was drafted into the Vietnam war and when he got back every friend he had called him a murderer. He still won't talk about what happened over there much. The rare occasions he's been liquored up enough to talk about he break down in tears. My uncle Mike is a six foot three inch musclebound mountain of a man but to see him break down... it's humbling to think of what he went through.

For some it's true. Many soldiers lost their minds over there, did more than what had to be done. Killing a child to save your squad is one horrible necessity, but quite a few just started killing because anyone who looked different was an enemy to them. Some became unhinged and started to enjoy the killing. Civilian, Cong, didn't matter. Just as it became hard for those soldiers to differentiate between 'target' and 'people', it also became hard for Americans to tell who was doing his duty and who was a soulless monster. Sometimes, not even the soldiers knew which was which anymore. Both my grandfathers served in 'Nam, and that's what I gathered from their experiences as a field medic and colored field communications.

they always forget, time passes and wounds heal so everyone forgets the pain of war. Those with power want more, and those with not enough seek to take and so we see more. It never ends, if not on the battle field then in the streets. One day war will come again, but not this day. Today we heal, today we love, today we grow, and today we prepare for War.
I'm not sure if it has already been posted but....

Not sure of my grandfathers involvement with it, but I know he was in the military at the time. Most I know of his involvement with it was being stationed on some island after the war I think disposing of Agent Orange. If such is the case as you say, there might have been more but that was all he was ever willing to talk about.
5862842 Really !? No, really, kudzu !? I mean, I´m slow as a brick and thick as a rock, but even I can forsse ALL the hints you´re dropping everywhere...the war that is ´bout to come against Equestria is something to put any conflict the world saw so far in shame. It will be a world-breaking level of war and destruction. Like Superman, on steroids, against Zod, on even more steroids....but with limitless budget for special visual effects !
Unless...
Bucky, being the clever warlock he is, find a way to change the battlefield. Such war in the enemy´s battlefield, for example.

From what I can tell from research, and the friends my grandfathers kept in touch with, those who... went too far and came back, some eventually returned to their senses and were still human enough to be filled with regret, but not many. That sort didn't often make it back since they'd lose all sense of self-preservation. It's possible that your grandfather was in a unit with a CO who lost it, or several soldiers who went off the deep end.
Even not being involved, seeing the men you depend on and trust your life with just give in and go insane and toss aside humanity - the thing you have to cling to every day to tell yourself that it's worth going on. I imagine that could break a man's spirit something fierce.
Bucky hawked, "Keg, you do know that is what I'm aiming for, right? A world without war?"
Maybe tie a millstone atound all of the typos while you go
.....Shit.
