Show me an example.
Otherwise... **shrug**

Only begins another statement and should be separated by a semicolon rather than a comma. I'm comma-happy myself but there is a limit.
I'm really enjoying reading about Diamond Tiara's problems here... I mean, Steeplechase is basically a reflection of her, only apparently in a much worse situation.
I mean, DT's mother leaving her and Filthy was terrible, but... it's not something that would make me physically ill.
Soooo... where was DT's safe place..?
it's a vicious cycle anger and pain begets more anger and pain.
5354885 And don´t forget the most terryfing thing ´bout then, the one that causes more injuries and deaths in the whole world.
Arachonophobia.
The spider kills you ´cause she is a spider. That simple. You look at her and die. I did a couple of times already. Damn spider. And cockroachs. NEVER forget cockroachs.

The little hidey-hole under the Bitters Family house now.
5354967
I thought it was Sentinel's little cupboard under the stairs myself.
I have to confess that i do not fully understood what happened with Mr. Rich and his mares. Either I´m worse at reading english then I though or more will come.
Also, loving the Diamond Tiara´s Recovering mini-arc...wich I hope is not that mini at all.
There quite a few messed up foals in this story.

More is likely to come, the current lack of information is intentional, not inability on your part. This day was written to be a bad day for a lot of ponies, and also one of those times where Kudzu goes "remember how judge-y and opinionated you all were several chapters ago towards that character? Yeah, that wasn't nice of you and here's the why." He does love his forced perspective and deliberately misdirecting us so he can make a point later. This story wouldn't be nearly as rich an experience if a person just read the story start to current while ignoring all the comments and discussion going on.

Only the author knows... all we know as readers is that Bucky has sworn not to ascend so, until/unless he breaks that oath, we are supposed to assume he has a very much finite lifespan. IIRC, there was also a mention that in this AU, "lesser alicorns" like Twilight and Cadance (and Bucky if he ascended from being a unicorn but the Las Pegasus events seem to point toward changeling alchemy as his next step instead) are not intrinsically immortal.
this is definitely a rule of 'everything better than them' that does not add up at all.
pegasi only have their flight. twilight has flight, strength, and magic, and bat ponies have ridiculous forms of both. neither could properly fly in a low oxygen environment because they need more oxygen than normal ponies. the only way to provide yourself oxygen is to breath it. more than likely the ridiculous force of the bat poies would be the reason for it. they need more oxygen than normal ponies to function as they need more nutrition. the need of more nutrition means the need of more oxygen to aid in metabolism. without oxygen they would tire extremely quickly.
5355585
Um... who's writing this story again and knows the physiology of their creations?
Oh that's right, it's you! I better go back and fix it... somehow I screwed up your story!
I'm so sorry!

The simple explanation is available, but I'm not going to bother. It would just be argued with and then ignored, so there is no point in explaining that this behaviour actually exists in real life animals here on earth that can fly at extreme altitudes and go into a natural low oxygen state.
5355600 can you please no do that?
i am not operating on my headcanon with this, but taking into account your information. the fact bucky had to turn omnivore to support his power, for example. power often requires greater access to sustain that energy. problem is nutrition is only one half of the equation. you will need to have a constant supply of oxygen to metabolize that energy. oxygen essential for metabolizing.
put simply the bat ponies produce such ridiculous physical force it would mean they would require much more oxygen than a pegasus would, maybe even an earth pony. perhaps their pegasus orgins could levi some of that, but there is no way they could function in a low oxygen environment any more than they could function eating grass. put ismply magic does not replace needs, it relies on them.
my own headcanon, this would not have been that much of a problem as the connection of physical energy and mystical energy is much, much looser in comparison.

Think of it like a whale. For a brief time, about a few minutes, they go into low oxygen mode and go where the air is very very thin. They become partially insubstantial to further reduce the amount of oxygen their body needs. They go hurtling along at great speeds, but can't keep this up for too long, so they are forced to drop back into thicker atmosphere and catch their breath, much like a whale needing to surface.
Overall, pegasi can fly faster than the lunar pegasi, with the exception of when lunar pegasi take an (extremely limited) dip out of the atmosphere.
It is also very important to remember that they are only about half real in this state, a flying mass of shadow of skimming on the edges of the void.
Twilight can go there as well, but without the need for shadow diving. She does it through raw endurance.

This should help!

I believe it was mentioned that the lesser alicorns would have to have a second death in order to ascend to Full Alicorn like Celestia and Luna. I imagine there's something more than just dying, but that's what I seem to recall being said.
5355661 whales are able to do that because of how specialized theri bodies are. their lungs have evolved to hold and process air for a prolonged amount of time. more so their bodies have evolved to be stream lined for water and, ultimately there is little extraneous parts to deal with. they have extremely simple limbs and their metabolism is slow. secret to that. they cano not do anyhtign else but their niche.
5355789
See, this is why I didn't want to bother with a detailed explanation.
You completely missed the point in the rest of the post and seized upon a similarity.
5355787
Death is certainly one way. Sacrificing one's self for the concept or the element you are associated with.
5355813
So, essentially... they have to have a likely heroic death in order to ascend. Sacrificing themselves for love, or magic, or war/the end thereof perhaps.
On that note, if the Comsicorn was also a mortal at one point, did they ascend in a similar potentially heroic manner?
I'm going to straight die if he/she's been pulling a Doctor Manhattan/Ozymandias this whole time.
5355852
That is one way.
Theoretically, Twilight could do it in a number of ways, death being one of them. But these are story elements and I don't wish to spoil anything.
5355852
At one point, the omnicorn was a mortal pony.
Over time and many transformations, it became something else. Celestia, Luna, and the Fates are well on their way towards a similar state of being.
The omnicorn hit a very troubling point in its existence though. Same problem as most mortals have, but now on an immortal scale.
5355810 ........... you are taking the example of a creature capable of doing that without taking into account the reasons why they can to put it simply. they sacrifice many things to specialize in a single niche.
becoming immaterial i do not get at all to be honest. wouldn't that just burn up even more energy, and thus oxygen, to use magic to become something else? basically flying through a low oxygen area, holding you breath, while creating a magical effect at the same time.
5355915
Light drain on magic, nothing fatiguing. Not a total shift, just enough to allow them to slip through the thin air.
5355919 becoming immaterial, a part of your body no longer even being matter, is only a light draw?...... sighs.
even outside of the biological issue with all of that, and how contrivedly thorough discord was making them, there is a magical issue. at that height, the sun is almost always peaking, short of midnight.
in addition, the sunlight would be completely unfiltered by atmosphere. the bat ponies would be hit by full on sunlight. if filtered sunlight weakened them........
5356000
This is course only works in the dark. Remember, sun rotates around the planet and is surprisingly small.
And no, not completely immaterial. See, this is why I didn't want to explain anything. It just gets ignored. This is why I don't want to bother and I turn to sarcasm instead.
Why waste this effort when I could be writing?
5355857
Somewhere, in an alternate reality to the left of this one, Bucky sacrifices himself for the love of war-magic, stealing Twilight and Cadence's ascensions the same time as he makes his own.
5354885
I was exaggerating, I'm just thinking of the common, harmless spiders that you can find in the little corners of a room. :3
5355787
I think that was the part where he dreamed about ali-Buck and realized that if he ascended, he would be immortal as long as there is a war somewhere... and even if all life on the current world was extinguished which should theoretically end him, he could portal onto other worlds and alternate universes to keep going. He fears ascension because he suspects the destruction he might cause would know no bounds and he knows the "omnicorn" wants to destroy everything so it can start everything over. For some reason though, it does not want to do the dirty job itself.
5356039 ........ how did i forget to put partially in? i meant partially immaterial.
if anything being partially so is probably more difficult. rather than going one way or the other, you stay in some middling ground.
5356114
I give up. I just got tell telling you, explaining to you how it worked, that it was a low energy solution, and you tell me I'm wrong.
I'm done. If anybody needs me, I'll be writing and editing and trying to not tear the hair off of my nappy head in frustration.
5356131 sorry..........
5356189
In the future, ask how something is and how it works. Accept the answer as it is given, unless you have a /strong/ reason to believe otherwise, then propose the reason why and see if it alters the author's thinking. If not, that is also fine - the world is theirs, they can have a completely alternate set of physics, or logic itself can be different on a universal scale. The main point is that you should accept what you are being told on a "how does this work" question, even if you don't personally agree with it - because they are the ones who say what does and does not work and how it does or does not work. Continuing on like this is frustrating for anyone.
Just gotta know when to say "Okay, that's fine."
5356287
And, if all else fails, a wizard did it.
I'm curious as to how they can fly at such a high altitude.
Birds and bats both gain thrust by flapping their wings and basically pushing against the air resistance. How does this work where the air is so thin you couldn't generate the needed amount of thrust, especially with the lunar pegasi flying above the atmosphere?
7172748
Shadow magic.
7172756
Any chance you'd be willing to explain what the magic is doing? I wouldn't actually ask for you to give me the science about it, magic is uh.... not something we have a way of studying in our world, but to know what the magic is doing to the pony, or the area around the pony, would be great. Stuff like this is great for making us think and expand on our worlds.
7179299
I've always wanted to try my hand at Necromancy, and this thread is only three years old, so it shouldn't be too decayed.
FOR SCIENCE!
One would assume that, for Lunar Pegasi at least, as they gain altitude, their shadow power would increase, because as you know, the light of our sky is the refracted light of the sun hitting our atmosphere, and as the atmosphere thins, less light is refracted, resulting in an increase in darkness until you clear the atmosphere and hit the darkness of space.
With all of this increase in power, it could be safe to assume, and this is only theoretical of course, that the Lunar Pegasi can expend this energy to create a series of micro jumps, there by no longer needing air to flap. The flapping is used instead to keep muscles moving, and blood flowing, so that the Lunar Pegasus does not freeze to death.
Is that a sufficiently Twilighty description?
I do apologise for the Necromancy, but the thought experiment was too good to pass up. If anyone has any better theories, I would love to hear them.
