Earth ponies writing books about magic?
Lets hope destroying the "brain" will be effective.
4824397
You will have to wait and see.
should be "Wars had been won this way,"
My guess, what ever is animating the wolves has evolved/ gotten strong enough to do the same to ponies
4824507
The wolves are flesh and blood as well.
It was clearly said that when the impossible happened, both the ponies and the wolves rose.
Wowie-wow-wow.
Things are becoming quite scary now. I eagerly await to see how this will develop!
This story is getting Game of Thrones-y. First Bucky was made a temporary laird and had possible assassination attempt on his life, now there are dead ponies that comeback to life. If in the next chapter or two I find out one of the nobles is a scheming little unicorn that's nickname is Little Hoove or some other obscure Game of Thrones reference I will squeal with glee
4824392 More like cutting the non-necessary chit-chat from the already wrote books.
My reaction to the onslaught:
Marvelous terryfing. And The Die is Cast (best Deep Space 9 episode), ins´t it ?
The first "to" should be removed.
since you say
i'm gonna guess it's more along the lines of shadows simply controlling the corpses like a puppet on strings
Well... shit. Gather as many ponies as possible inside the castle and set the isles on fire?
4824397
The question what type of necromancy is this. Are the corpses simply being reanimated with some type of faux soul? Or are the deqd's souls being dragged back from paradise and forced into servitude? Either way this twist is interesting, keep it up Kudzu
*Calm.
Normally I'd say that there are too many transition chapters but as I've mentioned before, this story carries them well and there's a lot of important information that goes into every chapter that is needed for the readers to understand the final showdown (of sorts) against the shadow wolves.
I'll make sure to catch up on this story when I get back from camping, The Chase is my favorite story I've seen on this site so far.
I kind of wonder if Bucky's anger has anything to do with his minimal control of the frosty element in his magic now. It makes me wonder if it would help to just let it go and become one with the wind and snow.
Necromancy, this is going to be a whole lot of fun! Who's the Necromancer? Probably dark Sombra shadow possessed pony no.1. Necromancy!!! soul traps! Hosts! Possession! Shadows! Incantations!
4824598 probably just minor reanimation and control, I don't think the necromancer would have expended the extra energy to force the souls to serve him/her. That said, they are fresh bodies, so they might still have some soul attached.
4824818
Yea that was my first thought. But the necromancer has been harvesting energy from the isles for years. It may well.be worth the extra energy to bind real souls, I'd assume they would be stronger, and it sends a message to ponies who can feel that their loved ones soul is being forced to kill them or something like that
Whoa, wait a minute....
Bucky was too focused on the transformation spell to cast any protective shield on then. Dinky seems, really not sure ´bout that, too be to focused on what was hapenning to do that too, but i may be wrong. And, then, for no special reason, Ripple seemed to be weakened, like something affected her.
Beat me to death, throw me to shadow wolves and make me come back to kill my beloved ones, are you saying that Ripple´s special talent is shield protection unicorn style !? That´s the real revelation on this chapter !?
4824969
No, that was Bucky.
Dinky would know if it was her magic.
Sorry, it is implied.
Ripple's talent is something else. She doesn't have her mark yet, but she will be getting it.
4824977
"Whacha doing, Bucky ?"
"Ah, nothing special...just transmutting a couple of metric tons of mass and shielding my foals...by the way, i finished this 1.000.000 pieces puzzle and found a cure for the flu while i was at it...i was a little bored, you know..."
"..."
4824996
I really hate to give this away, so... spoiler tag.
Is Bucky alone inside of his head right now?
4825003
Wha....?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfh4Mhp-a6U
Some small typos:
" The stallions stood together and made a wall so the mares TO could escape to the hall where we could stand together."
Ahould be a "too" there.
Your tyop sir.
Was overrun.
This story is good practice for being a proofreader. There are very few mistakes. This story is also more awesome every chapter.
Enchanted Lyres? Maybe Lyra is ready to enact her protection plan. I'm guessing the airship isn't ready for combat, the vessel is ready but its not protected yet. And the clouds still need to be collected, I doubt Bucky could do all that and still have enough left over to do war with a Shade Army.
Hmmm... though I doubt the caloric/dietary value of Alcoholic drinks, breast milk would be a valuable source of magical fuel. That milk maid might just be a good choice for a on board chef. It would be like having a milking cow that also double as crew. Only problem is food in general will be hard to keep around. Also only good in the long term since she would have to bear a child first.
Dinky being connected with bees and possibly honey, Rising Star with heat, Sparkler with earth minerals and possibly water, Bucky cold and knowledge of the brew. Somehow I think if these four communed to make some mead they could make some Golden Mead of the Gods.
Shiiiite, and i thought things were bad. The mastermind behind them wolves is getting desperate.
Are we looking at a bunch of lich? Or revenants?
Because those are NOT zombies... and if we're dealing with Lich then we have a MAJOR powerful magician hiding in the dark somewhere who's pulling a Harry Potter thing using the undead as soldiers or servants... and if we've either got a Lich or a Lich controling things that would explain why the wolves have been there so long... because they're usually making ... I don't want to say Horcruxes because that's wrong... but you get the idea... someone working towards immortality and is using spells to bind his intellect to his...and sometimes other animated corpses...
but... I think we're probably dealing with revenants ...
...and if course (put spoiler here) .... ...that makes perfect sense too, in a really twisted kinda way... I mean, really twisted...I LOVE IT....
but now the suspense is killing me!!!!!!!!!!!!
4825188 Actually alcohol has a high energy value as observed when it is burned by it's bright flame. That energy is what bucky is talking about in the story, so in theory the energy from the alcohol could be very useful
Should probably be "We love each other enough to know..." and so on
Going by how you've been updating, I predict the next update will be posted within 2 hours.
Wait a second. I'm not entirely sure, but I think you may have hinted that there may be zombies when Bon Bon yelled at Lyra about Necromancy. Now that I think about it, I believe Bucky may be planning to use Lyra's knowledge on the subject to either put the undead down or have them kill the wolfs. I also fear that cutting corners may come back to bite Bucky in the arse.
Good lord, Bucky's dealing with a necromantic Magic-stealer.
I hope they don't fail, or it will end up like this
4825003 not this time, i wont click it you bastard

But while Alcohols caloric value is high the body does not absorb it like it would normal food. There are few significant vitamins or other elements necessary for daily survival. Its mostly a few Calories, allot of sugar, and depending on the drink plant proteins. Now granted Bucky is a magical fictional creature, and his horn might absorb the calories directly from his bloodstream instead of his liver metabolizing it. But that doesn't negate the poisonous byproduct left over. Well since Magic, we can also assume that is magicked away as well. I guess the idea that Beer is a magical aether, is one thing but as a substitute for food... bad idea.
4825608 I don't think it's gonna be a substitute for food, more as a fuel source for his magic so that he can keep casting repeatedly high cost spells without fear of exhausting himself too much
4825676
So your saying that Beer is a Mana potion, or Alcohol in general. If pure Calories is all that is required for magic replenishment then that's fine, but I always pictured it like working out when your close to starvation. You need calories but you need more than that. You cant just absorb food fast enough, trying to speed up the processes with things like alcohol is dangerous because while you body expends energy to negate the poison it actually negates the benefit of the quick carbs and calories will burn off before you get any significant gain.
There should only be one "he"
4825746 Well while that is true for the physical part, magic is more a manifestation of thought and will, so for the two to be the same is kinda wrong as mind and body are separate from each other to an extent, the mind runs on pure energy whereas the body relies on all the vitamins and minerals to function.
So the alcohol and all the other foods being used up for pure energy would make them similar to a mana potion from any of the various game you may have played, whereas the food that doesn't burn up and is actually used by the body would take time to process for carbs and minerals etc. if the food is just burned up by the magic in a pony's body then there is no real time lapse

So, anybody study ancient Egypt? Beer is liquid bread. It is how the workers built the pyramids.
Modern beers like Coors and Bud Lite are worthless, but some of the thick Irish stouts are like soup when you drink them. They are doughy and yeasty. Those workers were able to take in over 10k calories in just beer alone, which allowed them to keep working under extreme conditions. You get protein and starches. The ancient Egyptian workers survived on beer alone.
Also, how food is turned into mana is explained early on in The Chase when Bucky has horn cracked.
4826027 I did not know that egypt thing.
You learn new things on pony websites
4825746
Pure calories are all you need as fast as possible when doing heavy casting.
The moment they enter the stomach, they are converted by various organs and systems into mana-calories and used to replenish the body's mana reserves.
When Bucky's horn was cracked, he couldn't keep any food in his stomach for any real time at all, because everything was being burned away by raw mana expenditure. Hence the constant need for food paste and a feeding tube.
Grain whiskey is surprisingly full of energy. You can run a car on the higher proof stuff. So yes, Bucky is thinking of actual whiskey fuelled mayhem.
4826052
Hmmm... you win this one.... I cannot come up with a valid argument against the magical nature of food consumption of these fictional magical unicorns.
Ill get you next time Gadget!
4824927 decades probably, he should have enough power to control some elements of death at this point. Probably aging, disease (biological warfare), and some control of the living, and decent control over those close to death, maybe even total.
Necromancers are dangerous, exterminate.
I suspect a puppet master animating corpses and controlling them, not zombies.
Time to play 'Spot The Error',
“We love each other to know that the names are just meant in fun, there are never any hard feelings,” Dinky explained. *we love each other enough to know*
'He closed his eye and as he summoned his magical serves, his emerald eye flashed blue green for a moment.' *magical reserves*
4828258 Necromancy. Like what Lyra wants to study.
Is this place the crypt of the necrodancer?
I can see Lyra as a Necromancer... and its incredibly hot... hehehe eue
Nice job!
