... It's been a long time since I've been this ambivalent about The Chase.
Damn it Bucky. You should not let your chains be yanked like that.
5257690
I'm sorry mang... but it is a passing issue that leads to other issues.
Mainly, does might make right?
If it is any consolation, you'll be able to see Spike going to school in a little while.
It looks like Bucky will be going to war anyway, because we know there'll be somepony/griffon/minotaur/whatever that will not want to give up its new found power.
lol
first comment is mine!!!!!!
5257714
Yeah... and the idea that might makes right is muddled here, though. Access to superior technology and access to firearms is a method of might. But the fates are explicitly shutting down that avenue of power, presumably because it threatens their superiority... or at least the superiority of those they like.
I expect... that in the very short future this will almost explicitly be why Bucky justifies it is okay to be a master as long as he's "a good one." Because then it makes denying power to those who are weaker magically okay... they can stay at the bottom forever as long as he can justify it by being good to them.
And, as far as my previous comment: I shall rephrase.
I haven't been made to feel as ambivalent by The Chase in a long time.
Good job.
I'm not joking with that.
I will say I am surprised that Bucky seems to be going for an anti-firearm stance. However I am not convinced that is the whole truth of it. I half expect him to keep a private stash of them. As time goes on, he seems to be getting closer and closer to the bad future he foresaw. Spelljar golems, a loyal army/kingdom of griffons. Who knows what else as time progresses. Is he even consciously aware that he's beginning to reflect that future incarnation of himself?
5257740
Found a typo.
Should say
'Sixth'
Just doin' my part.
5257742
Aw, thanks!

I see someone already beat me to the punch, but yes, what he said is true (got my info from friends who have actually BEEN to Switzerland).
Also, in Switzerland there are public armories where you can go rent a gun in case you lose yours (and in case of national emergencies), and I THINK that visitors who stay for a prolonged period of time are required to go rent a weapon there as well.
Why do you think Hitler never bothered invading Switzerland, and focused on all the "gun regulation" countries around it instead? The last country that invaded Switzerland was France under Napoleon, I think.
Gun regulation won't stop murderous rampages, either. In China, where owning a gun can get you executed, has recently had murderous rampages done by people with knives.
5257750
This is true.
But has enough changed to alter that bad future. Griffons who serve out of love rather than hate. Spell jar golems that patrol to keep the world safe, not commit war. The future itself seems unavoidable, but if enough of the factors are changed, will the end outcome be different?
Somebody has been paying attention.
5257750
Oh god... oh god, you're right. Superficially he is getting much closer to the future he saw...
Even fighting it, with the Fate's help, with the support of those he loves... it may still be drawing closer, isn't it?
....If you think about it, all that's changed, in regards to guns, is which side of the barrel he's on.
They can still do all the things he said they could, it's just that in this case Bucky finds himself on top of the totem pole when someone's looking to equalize.
They're just fine when he and the ones he thinks should be using guns are armed, but once he finds himself on the wrong side of it...
an army
remove first 'less'
Typo hunting golems made out of spell jars! And every time they find a typo they drop one!
5257712
Again, the fates are looking out for themselves. Nothing else, no one else, regardless of what they say. The fates care only that they continue to exist. To believe otherwise is foalish.
And now for the weather!
"Well, there's a large fire in the land of Minos, it seems that the explosion of a fire golem has taken part of the forest areas normally used for their goods, and here to the Northwest in the northern Diamond Dog kingdom we see massive electrical storms."
"Wow storm chaser, it sounds like things are getting bad out there."
"They sure are, and just wait, as I understand it we have a situation in Equestria itself..."
5257773 THANK YOU! FINALLY SOMEBODY WITH SENSE! While I adore this story, the regulations on all weapons makes me feel ill. There is no better way to make citizens slaves than to take away their right to defend themselves. I do not approve of this chapter in the least. Now, that said, I wish firearms had never been invented here in our world. I have extensively studied melee marshal weapons and I prefer those, but the fact remains that the 'bad guys' will always have guns and if the 'good guys' don't that just ensures a slaughter.
Automated lethal weaponry is bad. Spelljar golems seek out gunpowder roaming the earth? Don't like the kingdom next door? Send some agents to set up a small, secret gunpowder factory under each target you're after.
Let's not forget other, practical uses for gunpowder like demolitions and fireworks, or that there are numerous other explosives just waiting to be discovered.
If you want to destroy a concept you have to strike at the methods of implementation, which requires subtlety: sneaking around disarming nukes is a prime example. For smaller items you may have a problem beyond your capabilities.
5257784
Thanks!
I try to. I read the whole story in about a week and a half, so a lot of it is still fresh in my mind.
I'm wondering when Bucky's own shadow nature will come into effect. We know he's essentially the first lunar unicorn, and although scarred, he still has the same shadow nature that Sentinel has. We've seen some of the instincts before, when he was bonding with Harper. When can we expect him to experience an enraged feral moment like Sentinel did before? He should have the same strength, being a shadow creature. However with how scarred his body it, perhaps his strength isn't there to fully exercise it.
what a way to ban firearms... surrender them or DIE... that is the way WAR should work
But what's with that freaky cloak?!
5257847
It doesn't amplify his physical strength. There are hints from his medical examination in chapter 209. His shadow nature amplifies his magical strength. The enlarged thaumaturgical glands.
But as time goes on, he will explore his shadow magic more and more.
He's finally got the right cloak for it.
Welp. I used to want to align myself with the Fates if I had to but after this? Screw 'em.
Bucky saying the world didn't have the discipline to use them was spot on but using Spell Jar golems to police the whole world against using them with force?
Playing with fire is beyond an understatement.
5257784
But thats troubling as well. Germans loved Hitler, and while Bucky is still bent towards love many wars were fought over and out of Love. Its easy to assume Hate fuels War, but Love also feeds War. I always suspected the Will of the creator was more than the Fates made it out to be. But I'm now starting to suspect that Fates are not seeing the whole picture and there meddling is doing more harm than good.
Hmmm...Giant golems with molestation jars.
5257872
I had figured his glands had expanded from any of the other incidents he'd been through. The cracking of his horn to keep Ponyville at bay, the UV flare vs the wolves the first time, the fusing of his new horn to his head, etc. I didn't connect it directly to his shadow nature.
I'm still expecting a ghost bride at some point in the future.
As for the differences between what Bucky saw in the future as the Alicorn of War and the differences that seem to be evolving now. Who's to say things didn't start that way in the first place for the Alicorn of War? Golems intended for protection and peacekeeping repurposed for war. And as they say there's a fine line between love and hate.
........ i am not seeing how these golems could possibly be an answer to this at all. an army of bombs is an army that is gonna be depleted in short order. you can stop a bomb. ytou just make it blow up. preferably far, far away.
5257803 they would exist even if the world ended. there would be new life, new ponies likely, to guide the fate eventually. they are hell bent on keeping this world around, despite their tactics.
The more I think about it the more this chapter rubs me the wrong way.
Bucky sort of just delcared war on Firearms. Spell Jar Golems hunting down gunpowder and is he just going to release them in other countries and territories around the world? That's totally not going to rub everyone in the world the wrong way.
And when you think about it, all it does is just remove one way of killing others. Anyone can pick up a history book on humanity and find out we can kill just fine without them. We've been doing it for thousands of years after all. Sure we can be stupid but we're not stupid. We're more than creative to find out new ways of ending others lives as sad as that may be and everything in The Chase can as well.
I disagree deeply with Bucky's decision in this chapter. I think this actually kind of runs counter to what Bucky hopes to achieve in the long run. I feel like there are so many other factors leading up to his getting shot (including the meddling of the Fates) that he's actually missing the real problem and simply exhibiting a knee-jerk reaction. He was attacked by a nation that takes issue with his existence, that seems to be something that should be answered as an act of war to me.
I dunno, I would probably debate Bucky for hours over this issue. Then I would end up surrendering on the issue 'cause guess who holds all the cards now?
Honestly I don't like what The Fates are doing. It seems to me that they are removing the only thing that gives power to those without magic. I know you have your reasons and your notes about the future of The Chase, but I still feel as if The Fates have a second motive about removing firearms.
Hum, guess I was wrong. So firearms are banned again? This time with Bucky enforcing it...
So the only place now without a firearms ban is Minos?
Would Bucky be dealing with that without guns?
Maybe firearms should be limited only and ONLY for military purposes.
Again, not really smart, just rambling.
Have any of you watched <<Big Hero 6>> yet?
Would be funny having those glass golems like BayMax.
5257970 seems more plausible that celestia would personally obliterate the army before it got moving than let those two fill the world with hostile, unstable mobile bombs.
Ash Tanto = Thanatos. Wonder how long it's going to take Twilight to figure that out.
5257959
The fates, by definition, are kept alive by being what their namesake is. They are fate. They are the fate of anything and everything, including each other. I just find it funny they are trying to 'beat themselves' by getting rid of the guns. As for being alive if everything else dies... If there is nothing, then there is no fate, if there is no fate then there are no need for the fates, and if there is no need for them, then they can not exist.
A deity/abstract can only exist if the need for it to exist is there.
Then again I could be wrong
5257999 that is the thing though. the mortals would be gone, but mortals are not the only things bound by fate. immortals are as much, if not more, vulnerable. the Fates of greek lore held more power than even the titans.
The fates know that firearms are another way to end the world.A war of guns is won by he who has the bigger gun, so you build bigger till the rule of mutual destruction is reached.
5257682
Let me clear up an issue you're having that it seems your entire reply was based on.
I did not say it would prevent the abuse of power. However, if that sort of power is limited to a FEW people, they are easier to deal with if they do start abusing that power.
Would you rather have 100 people going berserk with their weapons or abilities as 50% of the population who has them, or 100,000 people abusing their weapons/abilities as 10% of the actual population? I would much rather have to assassinate a couple of folks who went power-crazy than deal with an army of ill-intentioned folks spread out all over my nation. One is easier to deal with than the other. That is all I was saying with that.
5257986
If you actually think this is what Bucky is going to do, you haven't been reading the story at all.
well shut my cake socket, he more or less did exactly what i though he wouldn't do. because the obvious reasons but i didn't really thake the fates into the calculation, starting the cheering like that. would have been full political suicide otherwise, no one likes being told what you can and can't do especially when it is in the spirit of "fuck you, got mine" that this in it's core is.
meh, it's not the first foregin policy equestria has made that i dissaprove of greately and it won't be the last. will be interesting either way to see what matter of conflict you spawn from this as the diamond dogs and the minotaurs will not have to be subjugated under the hoof of magic. that is what i really want to see you do. will it be "surrender and you will have peace" and "you have nothing to fear if you have nothing to hide" sort of big brother oppression or will it be some actual realistic and non-tyrannical way around this.
and lastly, that golem idea is just awful. i mean holy shit, there are so many faults in it that it really isn't a surprise that bucky came up with it. gunpowder in mining? gunpowder in fire-works? *Knock-Knock* who's there? go. go who? golem who will kill you, goodbye
5257491
I can feel you there. It is a beautiful rifle. Around here I've made sure that when anyone refers to my Dragunov, that they only call it "Big Sexy". There's a lot to say about Russia and whatnot, but no matter how anyone feels about it, the fact that they make damn delicious guns is tops. It's like art and practicality all in one. The M-N is another lovely example of this aesthetic.
... huh, that happened.
Think he mighta sustained some brain damage after all. Thats a... pretty retarded idea in and of itself, I do hope this isn't his whole plan.
5258082 guy did get shot in the head. could easily not be thinking straight. got one fuck of a concussion.
and unreasonable factors are a common theme in your story.
So first we've seen the Fates, the embodiment of War through Bucky, and now Death comes into the Picture.
Will we be seeing Pestilence and Famine make an appearance or are any later Immortals likely to stick with the Greek Pantheon? During the Shetland Isles Arc I was actually reminded of Pestilence in how Dinky's abilities were used so I was just wondering.
5258082 .......... and it is the sort of thing he WOULD do to begin with. albeit on a smaller scale.
5258111 we kinda did get pestilence when ti came to the gryphons. they were all mercury crazy and brain damaged by prions.
5257983 Giant Spell Golem's enforce the ban EVERYWHERE. No one is safe from spell golems
5258082
Not necessarily. The conclusion could be drawn, not because everyone thinks Bucky plans this, but rather that he would do it unintentionally by his very nature as he tried to stick with preventative measures. You yourself pointed out that the damage done to Pinkie was an unconscious strike by Bucky.
As for Twilight's part in that Outcome?
While she may hate the violence, she's already demonstrated that, if the numbers support the choice, she would not hesitate to push the button, so to speak.
5258120
True, we got the results but we haven't actually been confirmed on the anthropomorphic figure yet.
Unless you're insinuating that Griffonholm was a result of Pestilence playing his part in bringing the end while countering the Fates' gambits?
Bad idea, last time it resulted in clippy X_X'
