Not "lean" as in "wiry." "Lean" as in "skinny." Chimps, for example, are rather wiry but have exceptionally dense muscles. This couldn't be the case with a creature that has evolved to fly, as the excess density of solid bones and muscles would make the long distances they fly in the show impossible. It doesn't matter if they're not depicted as "avian." They clearly have avian wings, and in order for their weight to be supportable in flight, they'd have to have hollow bones and stringier than average muscle density. This would limit their overall muscle activation in comparison to the grounded, more land-evolved pony races. Whether they're relatively strong for their size or not, they simply wouldn't be as muscular as a land-based creature of an equitable stature in that their muscle mass would be much longer and less efficient for the endurance/strength-type movements described in the story. They could doubtlessly perform lots of explosive-type movements, but their mean muscle mass simply wouldn't match that of the either two races.
They'd also have to have an entirely different circulatory and respiratory system than the other two races in order to supply their brains with oxygen at high-flying altitudes. And it doesn't matter how aggressively they're depicted in a brief, overly stylized play. This doesn't account for an evolutionary oversight of their physiology. I'm not saying I don't enjoy the story. It's just that one's suspension of disbelief is limited when one is constantly reminded of this oversight. While I think it's a great story, this bothers me in that the author went to the great trouble of attempting to scientifically explain the Pegasus physiology but the science doesn't hold in veracity. If no attempt to explain their inherent physiologies was made, then this would be easily ignored. But this isn't the case.

Alright, perhaps that wasn't the best way to get my point across. What I meant was that I had a few theories on why Pegasi were so strong, even when compared to the very obviously super-strong Earth Ponies.
every night after reading a chapter.....

4903215 Okay, you're right in the real world. But this is Equestria a land where magic permeates everything allowing all of their immense abilities. I mean come on they have the wonderbolts doing wing ups every time we see them, In hurricane Fluttershy we see one of the background ponies constantly doing a bench press with her wings. In reality no avian would be able to do this because of the points you made. They don't have the miuscles to do it as part of their evolution. But clearly the Pegasi are different from any earth birds as they are seen to be able to do things like the wing ups and the bench press that they shouldn't be able to do.
I understand the whole "not scientifically viable" thing and that can bug me as well. But when you're reading any MLP fiction you have to take into account that A. It's an entirely different planet and B. MAGIC I cannot stress this part enough. As Kudzu explained, There is magic in all the creatures of Equestria, but only unicorns and Alicorns have the horn to channel their inner magic. Also if they didn't have magic then they couldn't fly at all. Their wings are nowhere near big enough to support a pony let alone a carriage or anything of the sort. This magic is the only explanation for anything that happens in the show.

Although, I like a lot of your points, man, you can't just do a hand wave and say "It's magic!" as a universal explanation. That's the equivalent of an ass pull. Theoretically, a bird with a powerful set of wings could pull a massively disproportionate weight. This is because their wing muscles and joints are designed to bear the bird's weight over long distances, so their wings would be undoubtedly strong relative to their size. But the bird's non-wing muscles are stringy and long, so as to better allow the bird's wing muscles support it. The Pegasi have avian-looking wings, so they'd likely have to have some avian physiological traits in order for those wings to work.
Yes, clearly some of the Pegasi can bench press an exaggerated, cartoonish amount of weight (albeit the barbell's designation of which mass unit of weight wasn't established) with their wings. Granted that this is intentionally exaggerated by the show for cartoonish levity, but in a story where the author made an attempt to scientifically explain the Pegasus physiology, you have to maintain veracity. Are the Pegasi show canon, or are they only canonical to this story? You can't just say "magic" to dismiss everything. If that were the case, then every pony in the show could just magic away their problems. Hungry? Magic that shit away. Too tired to make it work? Magic your shit awake, son. See? Also, the author clearly stated that the Pegasus physiology was the result of evolutionary adaptation, so there'd still have to be an ample amount of physical traits they would need in order to fly. There're still a ton of limiting factors to the mechanics of their flying. Magic or no. We're still set in the realm of the story's rules, but if the rules are inconsistent or flawed, then to what measure of veracity to we ascribe?
Not trying to be a dick or an overly critical douche or anything. I just like the dialogue and whatnot is all. Shit's interesting, money.

Eh. That's pretty fair, I guess. I'd imagine a Unicorn as milquetoast as Bucky would find any activity more physically taxing than doing long division and anypony more aggressive than a college professor to be barbaric and brutish respectively. So, I guess a snobbish context of comparison would make for a fair projection of "brutishness" from Bucky's perspective. I just took the term "brute" at face value to mean "hulking" or something. Operant conditioning, you see. My mistake.

Bucky comments in story about the barbarians that live outside of the university walls and getting to study them up close.
It is a telling statement.
4906886
Wow. He's that insular? That's pompous as hell, dude. Where does Bucky buy his fedoras? Friggin' snob...
4908443
He gets better!
4908460
That may be...but in the mean time...I shall do naught but spurn him as one would a white coffeehouse barista with dreadlocks and a bachelors degree in ancient literature.
"Bucky! Stop being a butthole!" See? There it is.
I just thought of a question I have been meaning to ask. Is Twilight or any of the other Mane 6 gonna end up in a herd when we get back to mainland Equestria?
4909158
That has been answered in a number of blog posts.
4909163
Oh fun. Gotta dig through em lol.
4909178
Have some help.
4909348
No.
He's the blacksmith.
YAY 150 chapters! Will you respond to this comment?

What should I say?
Dat Flank
Wait... does it matter if I read the lost chapter? Cause... eh, I don't know, I'm lost.
Nice job!
