Oh, wow. Ripple...I've never seen her like this.
I kinda feel for Sparkler, but I know that they brought all this upon themselves.
Like I said. Sparkler FAILED as the Alpha Mare. Though Ripple, while doing a much better job at pointing out a bunch of the stuff that went wrong and working to get things at least somewhat fixed, is a bit too aggressive. They need someone who is less aggressive than Ripple but a lot more active at their duties as Alpha Mare, THE MOST FUCKING IMPORTANT POSITION IN THE HERD NEXT TO THE STALLION, than Sparkler.
Sentinel: "You know sister, if you treated the troops that way you might have to worry about Mutiny. . ."
Ripple: "If the troops acted that way they would have worry about me burying them with their own shame."
Sentinel:" But did you have to pile drive our sister through the floor. The Foundry is still on fire, and Father is just giggling. . ."
Ripple:"Burn away the old, level the ground, salt the earth, and build a new from the wreckage!"
Sentinel:"I fear you've been in Father and Luna's company too long. . ."
sign of
Ha, go fuck yourself Sparkler. ^.^
So, Ripple busts in, drags Sparkler over the coals for something she also failed at, and holds herself up as a paragon of goodness and declares herself better than Sparkler.
Good job, Ripple. Great to see you're following the time honored tradition of shifting the blame to everyone else and proving that, in order to be treated as right, you just need to be angrier and louder.
I can't believe I'm actually sympathizing with Sparkler, here. I do not really like her.
5950909
This hasn't finished playing out yet.
i have a feeling things are just gonna get worse from here.
also if she is looking for sheet, she is probably heading to quills and sofas....... not sure if that store is gonna survive.
sparkler is like what 15 years old seriously people why are you freaking out? sparkler never had an opportunity to learn these kind of skills, going from having your mommy take care of everything to trying to live on your own is a big adjustment and there's going to be growing pains. while the entire herd shares some blame here and sparkler as head of household bears the brunt of the responsibility I really don't see what the big deal is. their lifestyle was taking them down a bad past and eventually it's going to catch up and that's all that's happened, these kids just learned a valuable lesson every fledgling teenager going out onto their own has to learn., seriously everyone is blowing this way out of proportion.
5950910
I know... I'm trying to criticize Ripple for her selfish and hypocritical treatment of Sparkler, rather than trying to criticize the story for having events happen this way.
... I know I do the latter fairly often, but I'm trying to do the former, here.
Hell, due to Sparkler's shame and Ripple's pushiness it's even a very believable scene that Ripple would bust in and be like "it's all your fault! It's not my fault! How dare you do this (to me and my sister)!"
And... I guess Sparkler isn't defending herself or relying on her smug pushiness because she's shocked by the whole thing.
5950926
Ripple is admitting to her part in this though.
5950945 in a sense. though she is sitll trying to shift the blame to sparkler and is presuming she knows what to do. she is more than likely gonna cause a lot of trouble before all is said that done.
then again she is responding the only way she knows. through aggression.
5950950
And she is taking responsibility on her own shoulders by assuming the mantle of alpha.
Im happy for Loki
poor Tapper
Ripple is back and she is in a full badass mode
5950881
5950945
*rereads the chapter*
... I don't see a single sentence where she says this is even partially her fault. She spends the whole time talking about how Sparkler has failed, and then goes around and even compares Sparkler and Rising Star unfavorably to herself and Bittersweet.
Saying that they both have to work together to fix it does not mean that Ripple is admitting fault, because taking responsibility is not admitting fault.
Even if I missed the hints that she thinks this is partially her fault, her basic message is one of blame directed at Sparkler.
5950979
Ripple is admitting to her part in all this though. You just haven't seen it yet. But its there.
5950926
I think Ripple is handling the problem the only way she knows how, with violence and yelling. While it comes across as assigning blame it kind of is Sparklers fault. Sparkler is Lead mare, in rank structure she is responsible for what happens. And since thing went badly Ripple is assuming command, taking charge, and handling the problem in her limited expertise. Sparkler know how things were wasn't working and it cause a problem. So she feels that she lost the right to object. Maybe after they have had a chance to talk thing out will get better but for now Sparkler has stepped aside.
Dam Ripple means business
5950998
The believability of the interaction is not in question, not really.
And, for the most part, I never really pegged the herd style as the same kind of unassailable authoritarian rank structure that would be in the military or in a corporate structure. If it is it is 100% Sparkler's fault, and no one else could have done anything. Because power only flowed in one direction.
I sort of imagined it as less authoritarian as that...
Everypony is messed up. A bunch of dumb teens with more hormones than brains move in together, and someone actually expected it to work?! Nopony is right, everypony is at least a little wrong, they need to have a sit-down before they hurt each other permanently. Might be too late for that, but they need to start somewhere.
'into the foundry'?
5950985
This is... kind of ambiguous whether you are saying I simply don't understand where Ripple admitted she was at fault when it should be clear given the current actions and context, or if there is additional context that is needed before it is clear.
5951123
Not all of this has played out yet. Incomplete data set.
Gawd help us. Ripple is having a meltdown.
A well deserved meltdown, but still. RUN!
And clean your room, this typos aren't going to clean themselves up.
I wonder if typos make good bedding?
5951128
Never, ever muss the nest of a broody pegasus.
5950979 She's sharing her anger and also directing it at herself. Sparkler is just someone to focus that anger on.
Rising Star is going to get his,
5950998
5950855
5950873
So you're telling me that because Sparkler is the alpha of the herd, which by the way, has nothing to do with friggin' housework and everything to do with the DEFENSE of the herd and BIG DECISIONS - that everything is her fault? Even if, by chance, it was a bit more her fault than the others, she deserves to be treated like shit? Even YOU guys are treating the character like dirt, OVER A MESSY ROOM! Overreaction much?
I cannot state it enough. Sparkler and Rising Star do the vast majority of the work in their herd, they are literally always busy, and when not doing important work that does/will save lives, they are on-call! If they just poofed everything clean everyday, the other girls would just sit around being fuck-all lazy. Sparkler and Rising, if anyone, deserve to be ANGRY about how they are being treated. The only people I can see railing against them more than the others (because EVERYONE is sharing the blame here, equally) are people who value being lazy.
I was raised with work ethic. If someone else in my family was too slap-dog tired or mentally worn out or ill or whatever, I got off my ass and did everything they would have done even if they were the better choice to perform those tasks, and I did it without complaints because they'd do the same for me when I just couldn't. Not when I felt like being lazy, but when it was just too much to ask of me. That is how a family should operate. That is sensible, respectable, and doesn't brook laziness.
The problem is that NO ONE is doing anything, and it doesn't fall to the BUSIEST of them to do it all, no matter /how/ easy it is for them. It doesn't even work that way in the main house. Kudz has said Berry and the others help clean up because Lyra's off at Bon Bon's shop more and more recently and Bucky's working on projects. Just like Sparkler and Rising Star, respectively! Normally they do it all themselves, and now they just don't have the time, but no one's complaining at Lyra and Bucky for not sparing two minutes out of their busy days to handle it. You're all just accepting it and then turn on Sparkler and Rising Star as if everything was their fault. Hypocrisy!
Well it's not. In no form of logic is everything their fault, or even the majority of it (They are only 2/5!). They all share an equal blame, and to suggest otherwise is purely projection and NOT the reality of the issues we're seeing here. What would have made sense is if the LESS BUSY family members got up off of their plots and did it while the monumentally-absorbed-in-the-future-of-the-world Rising and police-patrolling citizen-rescuing arrest-making fight-breaking cop were off busting their asses for the good of everyone, including said family.
This is why kids have chores, to teach them not to be lazy, and to take some of the trivial workload off of their parents when they get home from work. You think a parent wants to work all day, come home, then clean the house up on top of that every day? I'd lose my frickin' mind if that was expected of me just because I was better at it while the others who could have done it with minor effort in their relatively empty schedule demand I do it for them.
For that matter, just because magic can do it better, doesn't mean it can't be done by hoof. That's why Ponyville's Winter Wrap-Up was done without casting a big spell to change the season over. Because the earth pony way demanded that you do with effort and labor what could be done easier by someone else. Expecting them to do it for everyone else because they're unicorns is literally wrong. "Oh hey, you done with all that other work you had to do? Right, now do all the housework that I could have done already, too." Pretty sure we left the Shire Isles in shambles over something similar.
Sparkler, and Rising, know they have done wrong. What I'm not seeing is that the others are accepting they have done an equal amount of wrong. Just blame-shifting. Poor crying babby Loch. Poor angry Ripple. I can't see Bittersweet at least not trying to help, so I can give her a pass - but damn! Everyone's just jumping on the bandwagon of hating Sparkler and Rising because they're the leaders, and nothing pisses me off faster than blaming a hard-working and responsible leader just because they're the ones who have a bit more authority in some matters. They tend to do more work than everyone else if they're not just resting on their laurels!
Bottom line, everyone needs to stop complaining and get to work. Not just make Sparkler and Rising expend mana on it and yell at them when they don't. If everyone did their share each day, just a bit, the place would be clean and stay clean.
Loch's still crying like a useless sop, over scrubbing floors and doing laundry in the main house, apparently. LIKE SHE COULD HAVE BEEN DOING IN THEIR HOUSE THE WHOLE TIME! Is that LOST on everyone?
5951033
It isn't, we've seen how herds work when we look at Bucky's (and somewhat at Twilight's). Derpy is the Alpha, she mediates, she helps in the big decisions that can't be easily resolved, and she defends the herd. That is what an alpha does. It is not up to the alpha to assume all responsibility and make constant demands of others, nor for others to shove responsibility off on the alpha and make constant demands of them. Derpy is no more or less responsible for the daily going-ons of the house than any other wife of Bucky or Bucky himself.
5951164
Sparkler has basically allowed the Herd to start FALLING APART! That is how she has failed as an Alpha. It is more than just the mess house.
I'm kind of ashamed in you people for being pleased that Ripple just assaulted Sparkler over this. So easy to pin the blame on one person, is it? Two, if Rising were here? Am I the only person who understands shared responsibility? Who's going to kick Ripple's ass for not having done a damn thing about this? Who's going to slap the shit out of Loch for being a wimp instead of doing something about problems right in front of her face? She's not a victim! Ripple's not a victim! Both could have done something and neither did. Loch went crying home and Ripple has just thrown her wife through a goddamn floor over what was also equally her own fault.
Do NOT praise her for this stupidity and unfairness.
5951189
EVERYONE STILL SHARES THAT BLAME! None of them were communicating! Not Sparkler or Rising, but neither were Loch or Ripple, or potentially Bittersweet! And Loch is the one who found that troubling! Instead she went to momma instead of bringing it up with her own family. She didn't even TRY to solve the problem before going to pick up the sledgehammer of Berry to do it for her!
THAT is laziness. Being the alpha doesn't automatically assign all the blame for problems to you! It is not Sparkler's failure if her herdmates aren't doing what they should be, it is everyone's failure.
Everyone is at fault, anyone not seeing that is blame-shifting as much as the characters themselves.
5951199
One. I never said Sparkler was solely to blame. Every one of them shares the blame. Also, I agree Ripple is being too aggressive, but she is trying to do what she can to fix things. Sparkler? Sparkler was wallowing in self pity, or whatever it is ponies wallow in.
Also, here are examples on things that have happened that Spkarler, as the Alpha should have done SOMETHING about but did nothing.
Example. Rising Star insinuating Loch Skimmer got pregnant on Purpose.
Example:They Do not do any real talking anymore. Just fucking before and after they sleep.
For the first example, as they said, they were drunk the night it is believed she conceived and also they use an Anti-Pregnancy spell. A Spell that isn't 100% effective, could have been cast wrong while drunk and even if cast right, they live around so many earth ponies that fertility gets a massive boost because of it. And Yet Rising Star said Loch Skimmer got pregnant on purpose. As the Alpha Mare, Sparkler should have done something about that. And the second example is self explanatory.
The main thing being focused on right now? The Mess? That is a Physical Representation of their Herd right now. And they need to each do their part to clean up said Mess.
Ok i undertand that Ripple is angry but to usurp Alpha is harsh imo, i think it would be good for sparkler to say "Ripple i love you, you know that, i know that, but if you ever pile drive me through anything again it'll only take a thought to snap all your legs and leave you a crippled mess for the rest of your life.....but i love you" somthing like that.
5951220
Yeah sure. Threaten Ripple with an act their abusive Sperm Donor did to one of her sisters legs, but much worse.
5951220 A threat like that would completely break apart the herd for sure...
Ripple would be angry, Rising Star would be angry, Loch Skimmer would cry some more... Bucky would be upset too but I can't say in what way. If Sparkler said those things then she would be saying that Ripple shouldn't be trying to get her herd back together simply because Sparkler is a powerful unicorn. That's some intense tribalism right there.
I could be wrong, this isn't my fic, but I think that at over 600 chapters into this story I have some sort of good grasp on the characters.
5951239 I know that bud it just pissed me off her attitude is all, i know that that would never happen.
5951193 I agree with you.
I mean yeah did Ripple and Bittersweet try to clean yeah, but obviously they quit part way through.
Ripple could have gone for help long before it became this bad...it took her sister getting pregnant and paranoid before any of them saw a problem.
They all share the blame...
I would say that Berry shares part of the blame for the nookie problem simply because it was her helping Loch with her issues that started up Lochs libido, but there was no follow up conversation on the importance of talking.
Ripple trying to act like she is all that because she abstained is ridiculous because the only reason she was not apart of the nookie was because she was considered too young...and let's be honest Ripple is still traumatized from what she saw as a foal.
She didn't choose to abstain because she was mature and made an informed choice...she abstained because she had no choice...then she abstained out of fear...now she is acting like she made an informed decision...pathetic.
She stumbled into the right decision no more no less, and if she truly wanted that house cleaned it would have happened long before this...
5951228 i get it i do, just pissed me off the whole piledriving through the floor thing and Sparklers complete lack or response....maybe it was the complete lack of response that pissed me off more.
Everyone talking about Ripple and her outburst, while I have no single clue who this Gormlaith supposed to be. It bothers me a lot, so someone can lecture me about it in 2 sentence?
5951212
Rising was perfectly within his rights to suggest that. Loch gave every reason to believe that she might have done this on purpose, and considering she answered in the negative, he knows it wasn't on her and he apologized. Again, she is not a victim. That is not for an alpha to decide on, since they apparently handled it rather quickly. Attacking Rising Star for something that frankly needed to be said or asked and that he then apologized for solves nothing. An alpha solves issues that don't resolve themselves. This is not difficult, I might have sixteen years of leadership experience under my belt, but it doesn't take that to understand a leader's duties and what they SHOULDN'T do in a situation.
Again, the communication error is everyone's problem. Not Sparkler's alone. I keep saying it. It was not on her to fix because no one brought it up as a problem. It was on Sparkler for /being part of the herd/, NOT in her capacity as the alpha. Loch is even more at fault here because she recognized it as a problem and didn't do shit about it at all except whine and cry. I'm sensing some serious "must protect Fluttershy" vibes from people here over Loch.
Also, do please show me in your posts where you explicitly stated that it was everyone's fault and elaborated on the responsibilities everyone shared and failed at rather than just talking about Sparkler and Rising Star. Instead of just pointing the finger at the leadership simply because they're the leadership.
5951228
5951239
Yeah, okay. It's totally not cool for Sparkler to reassert herself after /BEING THROWN THROUGH A HOUSE/ and then Ripple pulling out her damn war shoes. A lethal weapon which actually could have done serious harm to Sparkler, especially if she dropped her mineral form like Ripple demanded. A minor threat of violence in the face of ACTUAL violence and it'd be all on Sparkler again. Soldier attacks their wife and causes property damage, pulls out a weapon and demands they sit there and take the hits. Yep, if Sparkler threatened her back into line it'd have all been Sparkler's fault. The fuck people. What is she supposed to do? She can't wing-slap Ripple, she doesn't have wings. But I bet people would complain if she used her magic - and she can't out-box Ripple to slap her back into sensibility with her hooves. All she'd have to use is a threat that would show Ripple just how seriously she fucked up. Threat or magic, all she's got - and people would complain about either.
Didn't everyone have a go at Rainbow Dash for actually punching people instead of wing-slapping them to get them to see reason? No one's raging at Ripple for doing it, but Rainbow Dash was at fault? More hypocrisy!
5951270
Gormlaith was a serving girl, I think - the one that Bucky accidentally aroused when he touched her with his talon. He apologized while she kept going on about how she'd bend over for him, and he directed her over to Loki.
I -think- this is the same one. In which case she came to Loki when he was still freaked over being a psychopomp and having died, and her simple interests and wants gave him just what he needed - an uncomplicated anchor in a life that just turned upside down, again.
5951276
...Just read the next chapter. You will find out just why making such a threat to Ripple would probably have been THE MOST FUCKING STUPID IDEA IN EXISTENCE!!!!!!
5951295
I will in a moment, but considering all she'd have is a threat and magic, and either one would be seen as unfair or bullying by you people, then you're supporting that Sparkler just sit there and take the abuse, by not allowing her one of the only two defenses she'd have. That's fucked up, man. I'm not even a huge fan of Sparkler, I liked Ripple most out of that herd, and I can freely admit this is wrong as fuck and who's really to blame here.
5951251
Yes, thank you. Exactly this. Anyone could have done something to make this better. I hadn't even remembered that Berry's the one who turned Loch into a raging ball of hormones in the first place and didn't coach her on how to handle that properly in a relationship between filling her head with mare empowerment and telling her how to get the dick.
Nevermind no one seems to think Sparkler is the one getting the bum deal out of all of this. Everyone's at fault, but she's the one who gets slapped by her mother and then punched in the gut, and then slammed through a house, and threatened with a lethal weapon while being demeaned. At this point Sparkler's the victim.
On the one hand, wallowing in your own filth and angering a significant other whose special talent is kicking ass are both spectacularly bad ideas.
On the other hand, while this may have been necessary to shock Sparkler out of her complacency, I hope Ripple doesn't make a habit of it. That won't end well for anyone.
Meanwhile, the griffons are recovering some of their culture.
Good, at like a bunch of animals and you deserve to be wrangled into shape like a bunch of animals
5951294
Thanks. I still have no context of her but at least i know why Loki acted like this
Sparkler is getting what she deserves on this.
5958172 Except that she wasn't the only one to contribute to the mess. Rising Star, and the other two contributed as well. It wasn't just laziness, but a breakdown in communication and expectations. Perhaps Loch Skimmer wanted to address the issue of the state of their home, but was waiting for her alpha to take charge and get something done. But it took all of them to make the room the mess that it became. And, unfortunately, it required something drastic, like the splintering of their family unit to acknowledge that something was broken and to take the required actions of fixing what broke if they wanted their family unit to reunite and mend.
Loki as an einherjahr.
That's...not a combination of words I'd ever have seen myself typing or thinking.
(Now I'm having Manowar flashbacks)
