Okay, I don't comment often, but now I have something I feel I must bring up.
I feel Bucky was warning Lyra about the egg, and knowing just a little about how much dark magic Bucky's grandfather knew, I feel there is good reason.
With the older Buckminster's obsessions, becoming a lich may not be beyond his scope of madness, so I feel it is entirely possible the egg served as a partial battery, but also possibly his phylactery.

Moonbow felt her breath catch in her throat, suddenly understanding Sentinel’s concern. In the short time she had known him, she had come to understand one thing. He lived for his siblings. “Little colts grow up,” Moonbow said, feeling that her words were useless but saying them anyway, not knowing what else to say.

Brilliant. This is one of the reasons why I love this story so much. Every character, from the most plot-relevant to the briefest cameos, are fully-fleshed out and developed, with their own unique wants, needs, and perspectives. It is so perfectly right that Sentinel, proper and repressed young colt that he is, would be horrified and repulsed by his own completely natural biological reaction to Moonbow, and that he would also enter a state of self-flagellation for his perceived impropriety (such neurosis being a former trait of his father and lead male role-model as well). That his first thought would be how this development might interfere with caring for his siblings is also exactly right, since I perceive it carries a mote of fear of being isolated and left alone again as well. Sentinel may come to terms with himself in time, but as with any adolescent going through spurts into maturity, a lot of love and caring will be needed to hold back the tears and rage born from fear and incomprehension. Even then, I don't think Sentinel will ever be one to derive amusement from his "Raging Boners" a la Rising Star.
