Minos invasion soon-ish?
Looks like Bucky gets to take another trip.
Celestia and Luna... really just don't want Bucky to have peace, do they?
Ugh this is alicorn of war stuff too, isn't it?
Better hope Keg doesn't need any help soon.
Lets start purging Typos with guns! Keep the running theme alive! Guns are bad! But, god dammit if they aren't effective against the damn typo infestation!
5487511 Gunbs !? What do you have against nuclear wipe out !? LET THE TYPOS IN ALL WORLD KNOW THAT THEY´LL MEET SWIFT AND FAST DEATH SHALL THEY DIRE TO INTERRUPT OUR READING !!!
Hmmm, I wonder if the shell casings have human manufacturer labels on them.
Also, why is the Shire Isles going to Equestria? Arnt the closer to the sea of grass? Or are they farther north, like Iceland. From the description I'm imagining Spain with the Straits of Gibraltar.
5487564
They are part of an archipelago that stretches from Fancy to Equestria. Shire Isles, Minnowrock Isles, Shetland Isles. Far Northern territories.
Way down south, you have the Sea of Grass, above that is the Hinterlands. Above the Hinterlands is Griffonholm. North of Griffonholm is Minos, and on a peninsula that extends off of Minos, there is Germaney and Fancy.
If you wanted an analog, the Hinterlands would be the Sahara and the Sea of Grass would be South Africa.
Equestria already has war shoes on the ground in the Shetlands and Minnowrock... moving a little farther east wouldn't be difficult at this point.
5486640
but not instantaneously. I believe it was stated that the Rifle the griffons had would rip through a type 2's shield like tissue papper. Type 3's are rare and hard to come by so can't be deployed in combat regularly, and transmutation specialist of a significant type would be needed to warp guns on the battlefield. It would be a quick tatics change to solve the threat by killing the unicorn specialist first.
5487098 ...... bucky turned gunpowder and brass bullets to snow and confetti with a spell. as well as stealing away any lethality from the shot as well. it would be simpler to steal away the kinetic energy than to turn it all to snow.
they could create an enchantment that does the same thing and apply it to almost anything. magic is not a solution for mundane prolbems, and these guns are not a mundane problem for them. and bucky alone has already displayed the aiblity to just disable guns with a spell.
5487585
The telekinetic shields that block against physical damage are tiring... just ask Shining Armor. Basically, it is a telekinetic push held in place, sort of imagining you were pushing something away from all around you and then keeping that projection of force in place.
Wack on the shield enough times though, or hard enough, and you begin to feel exhausted depending on the amount of force that hits the shield.
If say, a cloud of arrows struck the shield, the shield might last for hours before serious exhaustion. But say, a 12.7mm round, if that hits the shield, it hits like a runaway truck. You can only take so many of those before needing food, water, and rest.
Which is why Bucky uses blunt force to deal with shields, both physical and magical. He's not that bright.
5487577
hmmm I see makes sense, somehow I was picturing the hinterlands as the Alps and the sea of grass as the Sahara region.
So the Isles are like Brittan, Iceland, Greenland but a bit farther south and strung across the sea like the Aleutian Isles but in the Atlantic Ocean instead.
5487598
The real trouble here is distance. Spells grow weaker and weaker with distance.
A well made rifle might be good for a mile long shot. A spell, any spell, from say, a type three for the sake of argument, would be about as effective as a mouse trying to push a locomotive at that range.
Advantage: Rifle.
5487607
Yes. Exactly. The Shire Isles are an analogue for England. Of sorts.
...why ar there so many shell casings around this chapter? I smell many dead typos...
5487608 which is why i am talking about magical barriers. something that can detect hostile accelerated objects and make disrupt them in some way, such as simply stealing and directing away the inertia of the bullet. bucky is already able to completely alterate what a bullet is into something else. creating a magical barrier that simply steals mundane non magical energy away would comparatively be a simpler task. true it would take a lot of practice, but after showing the ability to enchant gunpowder to transmogrify bullets into harmless materials, it does not seem implausible that he could do something that solely effects energy.
talking on a scale thing here, altering matter is on an entirely different level than simply manipulating energy. and all a bullet is, is a bit of matter given enough enertia to penetrate flesh. it is nothing else and nothing less.
and as i am talking about enchantments, placing the power into an object, whatever amount of power it would take bucky could be simplified with more unicorns working on it............. or using potions. no one ever said potions are limited to living creatures.
5487602
ok one point of contention, a bullet by itself doesn't have a lot of force. What makes them deadly is the speed and small size gives it penetrating power. Is that also a factor, penetration resistance? I don't really know the science but the force of an arrow and a bullet should be similar. Not trying to start something just the logic of this example seems a bit off to me.
5487645
Bucky might, but that would be iffy, Twilight could, Shining Armor could, Sunset Shimmer could, Witching Hour and Tiddlywinks might... but for many others? The magical skill to project a transmutable barrier would be nearly impossible.
And for those that could, maintaining a spell of that kind of complexity would be exhausting. It would be easier and more efficient to turn yourself into a plasma wisp in Twilight's case, an ice elemental in Bucky's case, a something something in the case of Shining Armor, and that's about it for examples.
For Sunset Shimmer and Twilight, both of them could project a flame curtain, which would immediately turn something into a gas upon impact. Problem is, this goes for anything, including other ponies and the world around them. Bucky could survive being close to either, and the flame curtain would only serve to power him up, but in the events of actual combat, Sunset and Twilight would become a hinderance to all those around them they were trying to protect.
Sparkler could deal with incoming bullets well enough though. She would just ignore them. You can't get blood from a stone.
5487660
A .45ACP round collides with around 850 pounds of force on impact being applied to an area smaller than a square inch.
A skilled archer with a longbow using gravity might get all of 80 pounds of force, and this is the theoretical high end at optimal distance.
This is why guns are deadly to unicorns, in a nutshell.
Not many unicorns can lift an 850 pound object, much less have the concentration to hold back that much force applied in such a tiny area.
5487662 think kamunari gets what i am talking about. bullets have very little mass, their power is speed and enertia. remove the inertia, you take away from makes a bullet deadly. and that is manipulating the energy, not the matter.
and i am also talking about enchantments. if he can create a spell that is meant to transmogrify gunpowder and bullets at the same time, it seems plasubiel he could create a long standing barrier that can steal inertia and redirect it from an incoming, klow mass object. in other words bullets.
basically talking about manipulating the energy of the bulelt rather than trying to repel the bullets. perhaps transer the energy into the air, creating wind.
5487687
Actually, there are a couple of solutions, which will present themselves in the story.
5487681
my problem with it is Newton law: for every action there's a equal and opposite reaction. If I'm firing a bullet from a gun at 850 lbs of force my arms would fly off. Body armor wouldn't stop shit. The whole point of body armor is to reduce penetration, it still feels like getting punched but wouldn't cause a man to fly back.
I've shot a 45 cal. Revolver the have a big kick but no more than Boxers punch.
5487693
What if instead of a static barrier, like most unicorns have, an oscillating deflector was conjured?
A shield that rotates or spins rapidly.
It would be deadly if you're surrounded by enemies, they would effectively be shooting themselves.
Dangerous if you're surrounded by friendlies.
Just a thought.
5487717
From what little I understand how the physics works, it is because of the bullet's small size. (Bear with me, I'm no expert here)
It moves at a staggeringly high velocity (Several hundred feet per second) and the area of impact is small. Tiny. So it collides with a tremendous amount of applied force (many hundred of pounds) all applied to a teeny tiny area.
If say, you put a cinderblock on somebody's chest, and then stacked weights on the cinderblock, the distributed area of force would be over a wide area. You'd feel pressure, but not be seriously injured, provided that the weight was spread around.
Apply the same amount of weight over something with a tiny surface area, like say, a steel rod the size of a dime, and it will punch through the skin with a much higher relative amount of force because of the limited area of contact available to absorb force.
It is the science of how those big tough strong guys can have a truck roll over their ribcage and not die, the tons of weight are distributed over a large area. Focus all of that energy into a contact point the size of a nickel, and you'd bore a hole right through them.
5487717
This is also the science of how people can lay on beds made out of nails or spikes and not be injured. The weight and force of impact is spread over a wide area, in this case, many nails, but if the weight of the human body rested upon just one nail, it would break the skin and punch clean through.
5487769
yes, so it has to do with penetration power. OK so by this logic an AP round would do tons more damage to a magical shield than its normal counterparts. Also a sledgehammer would be far less effective than using a rapier, assuming you can apply the same force. I can accept this kind of logic.
-edit- like a water balloon, hit it with enough force and pop, or take a point and pop.
5487788
The video I posted does a better job of showing than I did explaining.
Sorry about the clumsy explanation. I have a good working knowledge how it works... but explaining it is difficult.
It is the foundation of the reason why I prefer rounds like the 357 and the 44... in a magnum load or even the 45ACP and I loathe the 9mm.
The idea is not to absorb that insane amount of force, simply change it's direction.
Perhaps with enough training, it could be "guided", not just DEflective but REflective.
a choice-consequence effect
You choose to shoot me, the consequence is that you get hit with your own bullet.
5487717
5487769
There are a few different factors here. The first is the basic force equation: F=ma or Force=mass x acceleration. Kamunari, the reason you were able to fire that .45 ACP is because the force to fire the 14g bullet with enough acceleration to hit at that 850 lbs was the same force that was transferred into the firearm (which was significantly heavier). The firearm, therefore, had a much lower acceleration (recoil). This doesn't take into account any recoil system the firearm may have had.
The second does involve the moment of impact. The shape of the round does start to transfer the energy at a smaller point. After that initial moment, there are two options. A jacketed round will tend to hold its shap, and thus have greater penetration (like a wedge splitting wood). A non-jacketed round will mushroom, this decreases penetration, but maximizes damage.
5487803
I use to carry a 35 cal. s&w revolver for work. The kick wasn't too bad but the action was heavy. We upgraded to Glocks 9mm, action was so much lighter, the recoil was weightless by comparison, but there is the worry, can you actually stop someone before things get bad. And that's why hollow points are given to LE elements, higher lethality with smaller bullet.
5487822
Reflective would take twice the energy. You have to stop the projectile, then accelerate it back along its original track at the same velocity.
5487844
What about some dimensional tweaking?
Like a dual-portal, from PORTAL or PORTAL 2.
Enters in the first, but exits out the second with no loss of momentum or force.
Bullet goes here => 0
<= 0 Exits here
I get that it would be complicated and difficult, but I think it would be POSSIBLE
5487844
deflection is suprior because it takes less energy to redirect the path. Your worst enemy is sentrifugal force.
Ah, all this talk of guns is giving me a raging hard science degree.
That is not a good sign.
5487888
Somebody knows history!
The pegasus is harmless... I just gave him the terrible name of Olive Cromwell in my notes.
5487927
Can I still pointlessly and paranoidly suspect him of sinister plotting?
5487960
Sure... he's a prick, we've already seen that. He treats the help like crap, just like the real Cromwell.
5487963
Huzzah!
5487844 With magic involved and established options of portals, teleportation, and other unusual things...
In theory, you could have a magical plane or flat field in front of a unicorn strong enough that simply does things like fold space upon the bullet and causes it to change it's course, blip them out of reality for a moment and back with all kinetic energy redirected again in reverse, or even have some manner of kinetic energy absorbing effect that stores it before sending the bullet backwards. And that is just the tip of the potential iceberg.
Magic breaks things. Frequently, this includes normal physics.
Also, the whole Old World unicorn business reminds me of this.
5488003
Yes, and all of this is possible... the problem is, most unicorns can't deal with projectiles that have the equivalent weight of hundreds of pounds in flight. You'd need top end type threes and type fours. And those are rare.
A few skilled type twos might... like Violet Velvet. She's reached the very pinnacle of what a type two is capable of. She might be able to stop one or two... and then be exhausted. It would deplete her internal mana reserves almost instantly.
Unless of course, Bucky jumped her up to a type three... and her system took some time to adjust to the new plumbing and hardware.
5488003
Oh, I'm quite aware of that... but said description is not reflection. I was just pointing out that true reflection would take twice the energy compared to deflection.
MOAAAAAR
So far we've just been talking about magicking up energy barriers out of nothing? What about creating enchanting/transmutation artifacts? Make them draw energy from sunlight and moonlight, and project a low-cost barrier the instant a projectile tries to cross a particular range. Unlike with electrical and mechanical systems, a magical system doesn't particularly need to expend energy just to activate itself. I believe the terminology was "pinpoint fields", last I heard of it.
5488208
That was where I was heading eventually.
5488044
5488031
I quite agree with both of you. And The Chase has had a good bit of inferred rules to how magic operates. In most situations, type threes or stronger are the only ones that have the power.
There is of course the additional option of things like enchanted mediums (crystals, etc.) with something pre-cast that just needs empowerment in variable levels. If you include something that leeches kinetic energy though, feeding a portion back into the system, the whole game changes again. This is an endless cycle, I suppose.
I love coming up with magical counters. They allow so much freedom for sane insanity. Or maybe I just like getting to break all the things.

Energy shields! Brilliant!
Using alteration magic to make a pony stronger, their bones durable as steel, and illusion to give them inequine reaction time...
Then equip them in enchanted armor with movement magnification, cloaking and shielding.
We have SPARTANS!
5488351 here we go again....
5488351 Hey asshole, are you going to say this to EVERY ARTIST IN THE FANDOM? YOU DO IT FOR ONE, YOU DO IT FOR ALL.
NOW, HOW ABOUT YOU FUCKITY THE FUCK OFF?
