Hmm... correct me if I am wrong, but was this the first time since they got back that they had what should have been a normal experience with a civilian? Not a great start... then again, ponies still assuming things, so par for the course I suppose.
And there we have it, the first pony that doesn't like something about the herd. Was that from Sentinel's journal, or does she think Bucky is the foal's biological father?
oooooohhh they just got judged
Yeah...this is will not end well...and i doubt that this is the last time it hapenned. Misunderstunding, wrong concepts...oh bogger, readapt to the world will be even more difficult then i though...
I'm guessing that nopony explained that Thistle was pregnant BEFORE getting married to Bucky. I understand it would be a touchy subject but I would hope they could trust the doctor and the whole doctor-patient confidentiality thing.
that dr... derpy might end her...
how many chapter left of the chase
5031528
I have idea.
Should be a few million words.
Ahhh yes, I was wondering when this would pop up. Cultural misunderstandings HOOOOO!!!! I mean it took the Herd a few months to warm up to the Idea of Thistle, can't very well expect a doctor after meeting them for the first time to understand.
5031528
YOU DO NOT ASK THIS THINGS
never ask ETA or ENDING
in this case you might make Kudz think about an ending, for now he just rolls with the flow, don't disturb his mind with thinking about the end, may this fic never end, a ponified "NeverEnding Story"
Dr. Whippoorwill says she's obligated to treat her patient.
Where in the procedure does walking away from the patient fit into that?
More like ''Dr. Whoop-yo-flank'' if I have anything to say about it.
It's things like this that piss me off.
5031519 shit...you've got a point. this can only end badly....
5031635
You are not obligated to take abuse from a patient. She slipped out of her professional decorum because she was rattled by Bucky and was promptly threatened for it. The best solution is to leave and have another doctor handle it. No one was thinking straight so her response of leaving was very justified and professional.
5031549 you have a point, but still, Thistle was already prepped for her ultrasound, and she was left high and dry.
...
Okay, more like lying and lubed; but seriously, that's like getting all the ingredients to make a sandwich, getting halfway through then up and quitting because it's dijon mustard instead of yellow!
THISTLE IS ALREADY PREPPED! JUST FINISH THE DANG PROCEDURE!
Judge the circumstance, not the person(pony)
*grrr*
...
By the way, Harper is still adorable.
Yay, misunderstandings.
5031659
I doubt it would be hard to have a nurse quickly made available to finish the procedure. Any results would be printed and reviewed and instead of having a doctor verify the results then and there they would be told a few hours later. Nothing horribly complicated that a trained nurse couldn't handle.
5031649 fair enough I suppose...
Yeah, I see your point.
That may be the very first time I've seen a doctor make any sort of comment about the personal lives of their patients beyond smalltalk.
Little birdie was out of line.
behave
... Bitch. You don't know the story, you don't get to talk. Besides, it wasn't even Bucky who impregnated her. *sits and grumbles about stupid ponies*
5031695
If anything I understand where Whippoorwill is coming from. One of the first things that happened when my wife got pregnant with our first child was the doctor pull my wife aside and asked her if she was ok with the pregnancy, that I or anyone else wasn't forcing her to be pregnant. I was a bit put off at first but I realized that Doctors are in a position to look after women in their most vulnerable of times. All the doctor sees is a young girl barely into her pubescent years and here she is fat with foal and her lecher of a husband is cracking jokes about them having sex. I would be unnerved as well. The supposed hero of the land is a pedofile, and after the things he said at the trial might lead one to start believing there was more truth to his words than was previously stated.
5031721
Somepony can play the perspectives game...
5031721 Asking in private is very different from making inflammatory comments. It's perfectly fine if the doc had taken her aside or found a moment to talk to Thistle to make sure everything was okay instead of jumping to conclusions, even to ask to take her to a different room after the ultrasound to ask such, but there is a very big valley of between the two.
5031727
Well you have to realize she had a lot of emotions going through her mind at the time. Overprotectiveness, fear of Bucky, concern for her patient, and she even said that she was having a hard time maintaining her professionalism with all of Bucky comments. So when he said that last comment it broke her decorum and she let slip a comment. Doctors are only Human/Ponies and they are prone to slips. She handled it in the exact manner that would be expected, step out and lest someone who is more objective step in.
5031727 Also jumping to what conclusion? Bucky was saying how they were doing not age appropriate acts to one another. It doesnt matter if he did not sire the foal he is Guilty of statutory RAPE. She is not even of age of consent so the marriage shouldn't be legal, but his status and position has allowed for such. If anything The family should show more tact with other ponies, realize that their situation is not ideal and help ponies to understand.
5031743 You are, of course, correct, and she is not the only one at fault. I'm sure professionalism would be very hard to maintain under stress, but I'm not the sort to ponder the private lives of others nor am I in a profession that requires such beyond the occasional mean-spirited joke about someone's hygiene behind closed doors. I honestly can't put myself in her shoes, as I know parts of the characters she does not and would be laughing along with them if i had said knowledge while doing her job; I'd admittedly be just as disgusted with the idea of a twenty-something cracking jokes about banging a very pregnant 13-16 year old (I believe fifteen.) In a moral sense, I agree with her, but in a professional sense I cannot help but shake my head.
5031757 I meant to say jumping the gun instead of to conclusions, was actually having a conversation with a friend about statutory rape and how it applied to this situation.
5031759
Well I agree, and I only give her consideration because the whole land is in upheaval, Bucky is supposed to be the example, what nobles should have been. and I belive that were the situation better she would have been able to maintain her decorum.
5031727
5031721
Whitestrake is correct. It was not the doctor's place to judge or give her personal opinion. Especially not in a derogatory manner. She became unprofessional, and I have more than a little experience with unprofessional medical practitioners that I nearly clubbed with my cane for their attitudes and insults. Regardless of how it looks, the fact is she violated the doctor-patient relationship that one is meant to expect the safety of. Being professional means not letting your personal views or feelings get involved in what you need to do.
Other considerations do not mitigate this all-important fact. It is understandable that she feel this way, it is not understandable that she had spoken it aloud. She is in the wrong.
5031777
Which is why she stepped out, she knew she did wrong and backed out of the situation. A bad medical professional would have continued, with the patient, her family and the doctor all under duress it may have caused more problems with the procedure. But as I said we all make mistakes and hers was a heat of the moment slip, can anyone say they never have a slip up in the heat of the moment at work? I would trust this doctor more than anyone, solely because she handled the situation properly.
Does the doctor know that Bucky is not the father of Thistle's foal yet? If not, I hope for a one-on-one between the two. Thistle and the doctor, that is...
5031799
Or, if she walked out due to fear, I would not trust her for anything. Two sides to the thought.
5031811
It's not about the foal in Thistle, it's about the fact they are known to be in a sexual relationship. Thistle is underage for Equestrian law and social sensibilities, so the doctor is angry about the fact that to them, Bucky is technically a pedophile. Even though it's quite normal back in the Isles that a girl is married and bred once she's physically ready to bear and carry.
You know, I see it from the doctor's side too. Having what is likely the most powerful lunicorn in Equestria flash his dark magic at you and then have his wife threaten to put you through a wall...
Can't say I blame her for leaving like that.
Bucky was making inappropriate comments.
Dr. Whippoorwill overstepped her professional bounds.
Derpy made an overt threat of violence.
They are all at fault in one way or another.
ADMISSION: I wanted to see how people would react if I stated something strongly like that.
I got a lot of good feedback and the ensuing discussion brought a lot of perspective I wouldn't have gained otherwise.
(I find this game of perspectives quite engaging)
5031847
And Thistle was the subjugated victim that chose to stay with her attacker.
Hey, just tossing that in there.
I think what hurt Derpy the most is the doctor was kinda right.
5031873
How so?
5031841
She doesn't know the whole story yet, but I have a feeling that she will soon enough.
5031835
Yes it is too early to judge her... She may have acted rightly and simply left a hostile situation or she could have panicked and fled for her life. But neither is justification for the animosity people want to show her. She may not know what we know but ANYONE in her situation SHOULD find it unsettling. And a good a doctor does not simply cut off their emotions when caring for a patient. A good doctor has sympathy for their charges and that can were on a person especially when dealing with someone who has seen a lot of hardships. Her comment was bad, but obviously they did not understand how uncomfortable they were making her. And now hopefully they remember why they were so reluctant to take on Thistle in the first place.
i think the doctor may have wet himself
I can almost see, in my mind, kudzu eating popcorn while we comment ´bout this final scene. He ispretty much the Alicorn of Controversy...
By Solaris' beard! This was more effective than I thought. XD
Excellent points everybody(pony)
Kudzu, could you pass the popcorn?

Might have to share it.
I was wondering when Thistle's age and pregnancy would rear its ugly head in a society that has gone for generations on assumptions.
Backwater country livin' with no modern support of any kind vs. the modern acceptable levels of social norms.
I know I struggled with it myself reading it some chapters back, but at least I could understand the whys and was thus able to accept the situation for what it was. If the doctor read Bucky's file, she would have noticed where he had been and might have deduced the ponies on the Isles aren't linked with Equestrian society.
It's not a comfortable topic, but K approaches it with taste and tact, despite how brutal it really was for Thistle.
5032024 nom-nom-nom-nom-nom...
Needs salt.
Unless it's the Cinnabon kind, in which case that would taste terrible.
I think someone needs to work on their bedside manner.
5032058 Yes, Kamunari and Whitestrake make a lot of good points; they add up and they make sense.
Thank you both good sirs.
And of course a special thanks to our beloved author Kudzuhaiku for this riveting tale, giving us a means to discuss differences in perception.
Popcorn, anyone? He did ask me to share...
5032058 I just hope today is one of the "Multiple Chapters" days....
5032116
