Technomagic at Play

Equestria. Ponyville. Twilight's Castle. Day.

"Aaah! Feels good to be back." Finally returning to Ponyville was Twilight Sparkle. She made a full recovery, at last, feeling rejuvenated in every way. "Now, I can get back to work. And there's a lot for us to do."

"So soon?" Returning here as well after spending some time in the hospital was Spike alongside Cold Colt. All three, including their Pokemon, were approaching the castle as it was still in tip-top condition even after these past months.

"Mhm. There's not a moment to lose now that the stairway's completed. Once those suits arrive, it's off to Jirachi. And with how long I've been gone, Zero should've hooked me up with something new. The world's changed quite a bit after what happened. So to know how much...I'll need all the newspapers I can get. The hospital newspapers just weren't enough."

"Right. But ya know, we could practice my magic until I can make a suit that'll help you through the passageway." Cold Colt suggested. "If you want."

"The ones we need are nearly ready so practising won't be enough. It's all a matter if those suits are durable enough too. We wouldn't want them breaking apart the further we go."

When entering the main room where her friends usually appear, there was already someone waiting for her. Or rather, two individuals were waiting for her. One was a regular and lived here while the other was leaning towards being a regular. Starlight Glimmer was the obvious first one while the second one was Zero. Zero made himself comfortable, lounging on Twilight's throne while being yelled at by Starlight.

"Science beats magic any day of the week," Zero said, wagging his finger to Starlight. While magic is the crux of everything that's been happening so far, without science, a lot of this would fly over our heads and we'd never know how to manage it."

"Pah! Magic's easier to understand because we don't need anything wild like schematics or data or whatever." Starlight replied as the two of them were having a debate over Magic vs Science. Which was the superior force in the world?

"Uh, am I interrupting something important?" Twilight spoke, alerting them both.

"Twilight! You'll back me up, right?!" Starlight zoomed over. "By the way, well done for making a great recovery. Magic's at the top when it comes to what we understand, right?"

"You're an expert of science, Twilight. You can agree with my option, right?" Zero said.

"Uh...I'd go with both." Twilight answered but not in the way either of them wanted. "I'm pretty skilled in both categories. Plus, neither is better than the other if you ask me. Both help a lot and they're the reason we're even here right now."

"Aww...that's it?" Starlight felt dissatisfied with that answer. "I expected more but...oh well."

"Anyway, Zero. What do you have for us today?" Twilight asked. "How long have you been waiting for me to show up again?"

"Three days since I heard you would return pretty soon." He held his hand up with three fingers showing. "I thought I'd get a head start before you'd show up. You know about the special suits, right? The ones that the Ranger Union are cooking up?"

"Mhm. We talked all about it back at the hospital. Just a bit more and we'll be suited up. We might be getting it tomorrow or the day after." Spike added.

"Well, good luck then. Because when you get in there, the way they described all those Rift Pulses doesn't do it any justice. It's far worse than what you're thinking. Nothing unpredictable is coming out of it."

"What? What would happen if we went in there?" Spike asked, shuddering at the thought of this other outcome that was understated by the Ranger Union Researchers.

"All the Rift Energy you've experienced and seen are plentiful, but they've been kept to a minimum." To give a visual demonstration, Zero flicked up a small cube that would soon float in the air. This cube would bring out a projection, showcasing a digital artwork of a pony along with Rift Energy in its most common appearance. "Well, as low as it can be anyway."

"It has? It doesn't feel like it." Twilight disagreed. There were too many examples making her think otherwise. "Or even look like it. The Arcane Sea is full of it so how can that be a minimum?"

"It looks like a lot but it's actually not even close to what the Rift created in that dimension. Those Rift Pulses are a lot like Supernovas. Everything you've felt here was the equivalent of a massive bomb going off. You're lucky that you're resilient enough but for this..." The pulses would then obliterate the digital pony, causing it to evaporate, dissolve, combust and disperse all at the same time, stunning everyone. "Not so much."

"A-All of that will happen?!" Twilight stuttered.

"It's keeping every Jirachi in there while also stopping Arceus from doing anything. So obviously, a terrifying amount of Rift Energy is there. The most Rift Energy that's ever existed to this day. That special suit of yours will give you a good resistance, but just like a Fire-Type to a Ground-Type, it doesn't matter how much you resist it. If you get burned, it's only a matter of time until the effects take you out."

"Uh, on second thought, maybe going up there isn't the best idea. Let's try something else. How about bringing the Jirachi to us?" A nervous Spike suggested, having second thoughts about reaching that dimension, let alone the passageway.

"So our suits will expend in the end? But will we even reach Jirachi at that time?" Cold Colt bit his hoof. "And what if they blow us away? Oooh! No fair!"

"Then, is there a way to prevent it?" Twilight asked. "Right?"

"That's why we were having this argument in the first place. Is magic the best way to go about it or is science? Either way, we need something that can fully protect you." Zero continued. "Ever since I learned about the pulses at the stairway, I've been working hard to create a foolproof protective suit, chiming in with the Ranger Union."

"And I suggested that we should use Magic Coating." Starlight Glimmer replied. "But it needs to be the top-of-the-line Magical Coating. The best that it can be. There are levels to most of the spells that we use after all, so I'm also thinking that we use some sort of grand spell. No matter how long it takes. Victini's still with you, right?"

"Victini went back to Eindoak after everyone finished healing up," Spike answered. "He's always a great help thanks to his power. But is it gonna be enough?"

"It should be enough. If not, then we're in trouble. All we need to d is get past those pulses and we'll be smooth sailing." Zero pondered.

Thinking, Twilight thought of anything that could potentially work out. That's when she thought back to the most unusual faction. Empress Twilight and her forces. "How about...we fuse them both?" Twilight reached an answer.

"Both?" Zero and Starlight said in unison.

"Right! It's something one of my counterparts told me about. In her world, there's something known as Technomagic. Or Technomancy. Or Magitech. It's the fusion of Magic and Science put together! In fact, that's exactly what Empress Twilight uses. She already found a perfect balance between the two."

"That exists? I thought we always had it here?" However, Spike believed that this concept was already a thing in this world from what he's seen so far. After all, Pokemon are referred to as Magical Creatures by even Arceus himself and some have already been affected by Rift Energy, such as Spike's own Axew.

"Just a bit. But we've only had mostly magical forces. Anything scientific with a sprinkle of magic was only limited to the Travel Spheres. And we had to struggle when finding out the difference between Rift Energy and Rift Magic." The Princess of Friendship went into further detail.

"Now, now...don't end up like her, okay?" Starlight feared that Twilight's idea would cause her to gain the same ideas as her tyrannical counterpart.

"It's fine, it's fine. It's for a good cause." But Twilight reassured that there was nothing to fear. After all, she knows what Empress Twilight is like and what she is capable of creating. There was also the extension of her being Sci-Twi's counterpart instead of Princess Twilight's counterpart. There were certainly a few factors that went into this.

"Not bad. And if we do that...we'll be making a new phenomenon for both our worlds!" Zero stood up, encouraging the idea." Aside from that giant Rocketship by Team Rocket that's over at that Pokemon House."

"Hopefully, it'll be enough. The suits will be here soon, so let's put our heads together and mix the best of both worlds. Something that'll help the suits." Twilight rubbed her hooves together before bringing over some of Zero's items. "Let's get to work!"

Kanto. Pallet Town. Ketchum Household. Day.

"Feels good to be back..." Ash could once again feel the warmth and softness of his bed, dropping onto it like a plank of wood. Pikachu would do the same as there was enough space for him.

"Pika..."

"But...We've still got the stairway to focus on. We've already had a good break back at the hospital, so let's get ready for what really matters." Ash, despite loving the comfort of his bed, wasn't about to slow down at all. "When we get in there with those suits on, we'll charge in at full force and make our wish."

"I'd rather have my own wish when we get there," Sombra spoke within Ash. "Millions of that singular Pokemon and the power they have is so amazing...Any wish I want can become a reality. Wonderful."

"Yeah." Ash agreed, despite knowing the advantages that Sombra could make with these wishes. Jirachi was too powerful to simply waste a wish on. If Sombra were to get a wish from Jirachi, the outcomes could be less than pleasant. But even so, Ash's presence was a regulator for Sombra's actions as proven by how the two have interacted and how restricted Sombra was.

"Coming in~" Entering the room was Delia Ketchum, interrupting this moment of peace. "Sorry if I'm ruining your slow movements but...there's one more gift I forgot to share with you."

"One more? What is it?" Ash sat up as Sombra's shadowy form would emerge out of the Alola Champion.

"This one is for you, Sombra. It came in earlier today." In her hands, Delia held a letter with a crystal insignia on it. It was even made out of crystals and yet it was still as fragile as paper.

"For me?"

"Mhm. It's from your dear friend, Radiant Hope." Delia revealed who sent this before passing it over to the former King of the Crystal Empire. Sombra would leave his shadow form, emerging in his full body before snagging the letter.

Indeed, even he was not exempt from a gift. Then again, he only received one gift and it was from his closest friend. Sombra would then back away, exiting the room while having the letter in his grasp. He would prefer to read it on his lonesome. He would open the letter, seeing what kind of gift this would be. But to Sombra, he already had a good guess as to what it would entail.

"Hello, Sombra. Sorry I couldn't reach you on Hearth's Warming. Then again, we haven't had Hearth's Warming for a long time. I've forgotten how long it's been. I ended up experiencing Christmas in the Pokemon World and it was something special. It's all centred around a human who lived in the far past that... never mind. You probably don't want to hear that. Without you, it rarely feels like Hearth's Warming at all even with these nice songs playing. I wish we could spend more time together and relive the fun we had those past years. I'd hold back all these tears with a spell but I can't bring myself to do it. Not when it helps me express everything. So, this is my present. It's not much and I couldn't think of anything else to give you. But I hope it does you well. And good luck. Love, Radiant Hope."

Sombra would finish the letter before closing it up. Ash, Pikachu, Delia and Mr Mime waited for his reaction while staying in the other room. Sombra did get a reaction out of this, but it was one that kept in line with his stern expression.

"Curses..." He growled. "I don't need a spell to hold these tears back...But this is annoyingly gut-worthy. Thank you either way, Hope."

Sombra was glad. This letter was a good gift to him after all. He wasn't the best at showcasing it. Had it been any other scenario and his more bombastic personality would awaken. But even if he couldn't show it, Ash and Delia knew him fairly well by now.

"Ahem. Anyway...Get suited up, boy." Sombra turned to face Ash from the next room. "This is our big chance after all."

"You got it! Not even outer space is gonna stop us!" Ash enthusiastically pumped his fists into the air along with Pikachu.

"Pi-Pikachu!"

"Since you're going to space, you'll need some extra lunch. It's a far distance after all." Delia winked.

"I'm not sure I can eat in space mom..."

Hoenn. Ranger Union.

The Ranger Union. Home to many Pokemon Rangers and those who assist them t make the world a better and safer place. The Ranger Union recently received the StarBots from the Galaxy Tower. Jackie recruited them ever since Galaxy Master vanished and with such technologically advanced robots, the Ranger Union would gain new advantages.

The StarBots, being programmed with knowledge about the Rift, would contribute greatly to the Ranger Union and their various Rift-Resistant creations. However, there was one other piece of knowledge that they knew. This knowledge seemingly wasn't as important as the Rift but it was worth looking at.

One of the researchers would gaze at what the StarBots managed to project via holograms. And at the moment, two holographic visages of familiar trainers were shown.

"Hmm..." The researcher, who had fairly tired eyes, was staring at both Ash and Hilbert. "Counterparts, hm? These two? Does it have anything in common with the Rift? They don't look all that similar."

"Doesn't sound like it." Jackie, who was responsible for bringing all these StarBots here, would stop by the researcher's table. "This is all our own. But it's still pretty interesting to look at, right?"

"We wouldn't have known since you tend to bring Ash up quite a bit. We should really recruit him to be a Pokemon Ranger, don't you think, Jackie?"

"I think he's fine the way he is. But ya know...spending time with the StarBots and what they shared with is nice and all, but that whole counterpart thing got me thinking just like you all. Maybe even more. This guy by the name of Hilbert. He was also up there on the Galaxy Tower. He even helped stop one of the 15 Demons that showed up. From what the StarBots are saying, he's not the only counterpart of Ash that exists."

"So there are more and we don't know about them yet. Or do we?"

"Oh, we do. In fact, there's a twofer at play here. We've got triple the counterparts. Check this out." Jackie would give an example, holding out a newspaper. A fairly old newspaper as well. "This is pretty old. Dates back at least 17 years ago. A trainer started making a name for himself by the name of Ruby. Look familiar?"

"Wasn't he the one who was with that Red kid? How is here in this old newspaper?"

"That's because this is his counterpart. Ruby and Brendan are the same in almost every way. Almost. But I say it's a twofer since the StarBots here tell me that he's also a counterpart of Ash, making him a double counterpart. Crazy, right?"

"A double counterpart? Can that even exist? There should only be one counterpart of everyone." The researcher scratched her hair. "How can there be two but...one looks more like the other..."

"Ah, you're the one with the sharp brains. You'll figure it out." Jackie replied. "But uh...you should also know that the same might go for the other guy. You know...Ethan?

"Yes, because I'm the only one looking into it, Jackie. Counterparts interest me so much." The researcher faced the holograms once more. "Empress Twilight was the biggest example we've ever seen since she came from a different universe. Then there were these other Twilight Sparkles that we learned about. But they all came from their respective worlds too. But this is different. Brendan and Ruby, I can understand that. But how is it that comes back to Ash?"

"Funny you should ask that. According to these little guys, out of all the universes out there, only 8 of them have counterparts. Weird, right? I would've thought all of them had counterparts."

"It's worth learning more about it. I want to meet my own counterpart if possible. But I'm also worried...Do you think the Rift took advantage of this as well? Or will it do it eventually?"

"Maybe. But we'll be there to sort it out, won't we? For now...just try and piece two and two together. They've all got that signature sharp look in their eyes, don't you think? I can feel the fire from here."

"Right, right. Anyway, get those suits out and ready. Princess Celestia should be expecting them soon. We've waited for this stairway to show up and now's our chance."

"Gotcha!" Jackie snapped his fingers before zipping off. He and the other Pokemon Rangers would prepare the rest of the suits, enough for a whole team to head up there. There wouldn't be a need for a spaceship at all, not when the stairway existed.

This pink-haired researcher was the only one focused on this counterpart theory. She would take a closer look at Ash and Hilbert, trying to see why they would be classified as counterparts in any way aside from how they act. She rubbed her chin before deciding to interact with the projections. She moved them closer to each other, fusing the two of them to see what would emerge.

The result was a perfect fit. The two of them appeared as the same height with the same build too. While their getups were different, there was a consistent theming of blue. And yet, the researcher still couldn't see it. At least, not yet. The only thing she managed to see was how their faces moulded together.

Ash and Hilbert's faces were identical as Ash's signature lightning bolt birthmarks would mesh well too. This would take some time to experiment with, especially since she also had Ethan's appearance to go off of.

Equestria. Twilight's Castle. Afternoon.

Working hard and in perfect unity, Twilight, Starlight, Zero and Cold Colt were unifying Magic and Science together in the best way possible. This was to increase their chances of survival against the destructive supernova-like pulses of the Rift Energy.

If they wanted to even see or reach Jirachi, they had to get past those pulses with the best defences they could ask for. Twilight used a mixture of both Equestrian Magic and Rift Magic, focusing it on a standard metallic cube that Zero shared. At the same time, Zero would delicately work on the cube while wearing Rift-protective gloves.

Spike would be exempt from this hard work, only messing around with all the Pokemon while the creation of Technomagic was slowly being brought into existence.

The cube suddenly started expanding, growing in size while also gaining glowing blue and purple lines of Rift Energy. This was straightforward enough as the unpredictable nature of Rift Energy was behind this. However, they didn't want just the unpredictable nature. They wanted more. They wanted to reach what Empress Twilight had already succeeded in making. Minus the ambition of multiversal domination of course.

"Can we do it?" Starlight asked while focusing all of her magic on one point. "I mean, if we can, will it be on time before the worst can happen?"

"Hopefully. But maybe...this might be the perfect time for the Harmony Phenomenon to kick in." Twilight replied, thinking of the Harmony Phenomenon. If there was ever a time it could be involved, Twilight would love it if it was now.

And with all of their hard work, the lights from the different forms of power would emanate and flash through the castle, lighting up the winter skies. But this flash wasn't a confirmation that they were done. They still had some work to do. For the sake of the future as the journey continues.
