The Empress' Protege

The Everfree Forest. Now in ruins.

After the sudden arrival of Luster Dawn from another universe, Empress Twilight's Universe that is, the whole forest had been obliterated due to her pursuit of various items assigned to her by the Empress. One of which was the cauldron that had a plethora of Fusion magic in it.

She has been going around, gathering items for her Empress, such as small stones that hold more Mega Evolution energy than the actual Keystones.

Everfree Forest was in a poor state now. Golden flames filled the ground and destroyed trees as Luster stood in the centre of all the destruction. She did this to try and see if she could hit Team Rocket and Zecora, who have the cauldron of Fusion magic. But they weren't here at the moment, and Luster figured that out quickly. Even the magical mist that carries victims away to random places had been destroyed.

"Tch. Not here." Luster growled. "They've probably left this forest by now. Unless..." The protege of Empress Twilight turned her head to the one place that Team Rocket might've escaped to. Ponyville.

The unicorn had a slight smirk on her face as the flames caused by her magic began enveloping the forest, burning it down until there was nothing left.

There was seemingly nothing to save Everfree Forest at this point. A forest that was once infamous for its eerie and unpredictable nature is finally meeting its potential end along with Zecora's hut.

The Pokemon House.

And speaking of Zecora, she had just been healed by Audino after Luster hit her with a powerful magic blast. By using Heal Pulse, all the damage done to the zebra had been diminished and wiped away.

"Ugh..." Zecora groaned as she felt herself feeling better than ever.

"There you go. Are you feeling better?" Fluttershy asked.

"Dino."

"I'm feeling fine, thanks to you. But, I can't rest now knowing that Luster Dawn is still in pursuit."

"Who's Luster Dawn?" Fluttershy questioned.

"Some crazy unicorn from that Empress' universe who's after the cauldron of Fusion magic." Jessie placed the cauldron down as the invisibility potion finally ran out, making it visible.

"Oooh." Fluttershy looked over at the cauldron. "So this is what Twilight mentioned. Wait, you mean Empress Twilight's universe?"

"That's the one." Team Rocket nodded.

"So then...that explosion...?" Fluttershy then looked over in the direction of the Everfree Forest.

"I'm afraid with something that powerful of that scale, the Everfree Forest is no more." Zecora sighed. "Every bit of, including own home has been done for..."

"She's not gonna stop coming for us though," Jessie said. "Where do we hide this cauldron now?"

"We can't go out in the open with it." James shook his head.

"But there ain't no way she's getting her grubby little hooves on it!" Meowth latched onto the cauldron. "Not until we've given some to the boss!"

"Wobbuffet!"

"Hide it here," Fluttershy suggested as they all turned to her. "If it helps, there's a deep underground spot in the Pokemon House where the Ground and Dark-Type Pokemon go to privately. Maybe that'll do?"

"Underground?" Jessie lifted the cauldron with Meowth still on it.

"Alright, If that can mask the cauldron away from Luster Dawn's gaze." Zecora accepted Fluttershy's suggestion. "But I fear that the rest of Ponyville, like Everfree, may also be set ablaze..."

"Ponyvillle will be fine. Twilight and everypony wouldn't let anything bad happen to it." Fluttershy reassured as she had faith in her friends. But, this was a new threat that involved an incoming invasion so she was very cautious about this. "I hope. Krookodile can lead you there. I'll go and warn everypony else."

"Krook." Krookodile nodded, accepting to help them hide the cauldron.

"Um...W-What does Luster Dawn look like?" Fluttershy asked before she got a move on.

"Gold, yellow, unicorn with a dawn as her mark," Jessie explained in a few seconds.

"Okay. Thank you!" Now Fluttershy could leave along with Audino, Chikorita and the endless tagalong Scorbunny.

They would alert their friends about the sudden arrival of a major threat that no one was expecting to arrive so soon.

Speaking of which, Luster Dawn, after figuring out that the cauldron was no longer within the Everfree Forest and at Ponyville, had arrived at the small town, setting hoof in it for the first time.

At least, this universe's Ponyville.

"Ponyville. Hm. Looks different from mine, that's for sure." Luster Dawn commented on the alternate appearance of Ponyville. Her own Ponyville did not match this one image for image. "Anyway...Where do I start?"

Pondering where to search for the Team Rocket, Zecora and the cauldron, Luster looked over at the town, searching for the first place to look. Everypony was currently looking in the direction of the Everfree Forest due to Luster causing a massive explosion around it.

Some had even noticed the arrival of Luster Dawn, unsure of who she was. But to them, that wasn't the most important thing right now. The most glaring building here was obviously Twilight's castle which towered over everything else in the distance.

Twilight's castle exists in this universe and Luster's own universe as well with both Twilight's having ownership of it. Knowing of the castle's existence here, the protege of the Empress smirked as she had a very good place to start checking. But another thing caught her eye before she could get moving.

From the corner of Luster's eye and just near SugarCube corner, a familiar face stood near the building. It was the Twilight Sparkle of this universe. Alongside her Espeon, Eve.

And just like everypony here, she was wondering what caused that explosion at Everfree.

"Do you think it was a Pokemon?" Twilight asked Pinkie Pie.

"Uh...not sure." Pinkie shook her head. "But boy was it massive."

"Too massive." Rarity walked forward. "If it were to be any larger, all of Ponyville would've been caught in it. That's certainly worrying."

"Did you guys see the massive explosion too?!" Rainbow Dash obviously saw it from above along with every pegasus up in the clouds.

"Mhm." The three of them nodded.

"It was pretty cool looking..." Rainbow Dash was impressed as she let out a small cheeky grin. "But what caused it?"

"Uh-uh?" Pinkie shrugged. "That's what we're trying to figure out."

"Anyone apart of that might not have a good time afterwards..." Jade shook her head.

"Zecora was there...She might've been caught up on it!" Twilight gasped, fearing that Zecora had been hit by that massive explosion. "Eve! Let's go!"

"Espeon?" Eve looked up, seeing that Twilight was heading towards the Everfree Forest to check up on Zecora, not knowing that she was alright and in one piece.

"Oh! Twilight, wait up!" That prompted Pinkie and the others to follow. "Be right back, Jade!"

"Take your time." Jade waved goodbye to her friends since she doesn't normally involve herself in the action.

While Twilight and her friends rushed off to see what had happened in Everfree and hoping for Zecora's safety, Luster watched as her alternate universe teacher left the scene.

The unicorn took the opportunity to make her way towards the castle. She knew not to engage this universe's Twilight and her friends. Mostly because of how Empress Twilight warned Luster about how this universe was a major threat because of the Pokemon alone.

Luster giggled as she ran off. Since she first showed up from taking the entrance to Everfree Forest to Ponyville, the unicorn ended up passing by Twilight, not trying to draw any attention.

But, when Twilight and Luster ran past each other, crossing paths, For a split second, Twilight's head and eyes turned to face the mysterious unicorn she had never seen before. While Luster mainly gave Twilight a devious and smug smirk as they both went their separate ways.

But they weren't the only ones in hurry searching for someone or something.

Fluttershy was also in the same boat as them. Whereas Luster was searching for the cauldron and Twilight's group were searching for Zecora, Fluttershy was searching for Twilight and Luster Dawn if she spotted her. She was just about to reach Ponyville but would end up missing Twilight.

"I hope I'm not too late!" Fluttershy said with a worried tone. This simple day had suddenly escalated into a serious situation without warning. Just like Luster Dawn, Fluttershy was going straight for Twilight's castle.

At this rate, both of them might cross paths.

Everfree Forest. What's left of it.

Twilight's group arrived at the Everfree Forest finally. And upon arriving there, they were given the horrific sight of barely anything remaining on this once eerie and mystical forest.

Nothing was left. All the trees here had been wiped out. Every tree, lake, swamp, cave etc. All gone. The group could only stand there in shock as the explosion was stronger than they thought. Usually, there's at least something left. But from what they could see, that wasn't the case.

"I-It's all gone." Twilight's jaw dropped.

"Looks more like a wasteland now than anything..." Rarity observed. "Who did this?"

"I can't see Zecora's hut up ahead." Pinkie Pie looked in the distance. There was no point. Everything was gone. "You don't think she..."

"This was an explosion meant to obliterate everything until nothing was left," Twilight grumbled, looking down on the barren ground. "I don't think anyone could withstand something like that."

"So then, Zecora..." Rarity shuddered.

"Mmmrgh..." Twilight didn't want to believe that Zecora had been caught in the explosion. Zecora always knows when to avoid disaster when it was coming. But the explosion seemed instantaneous, so to Twilight, there was no way someone could sense it coming unless they had a sixth sense.

But then, while fearing for Zecora's fate, Pinkie Pie noticed how there was one thing remaining in this barren and long-gone forest.

"Oh!" Pinkie gasped. "Looks like not everything got wiped out. There's some fertile plant there!" She pointed her hoof at the one thing left behind.

A tiny little root with blue spikes around it. Everyone quickly turned to face where Pinkie Pie was looking at. But, when they looked at the root, they noticed that it looked very familiar. Like they've seen it before.

And when taking a few seconds to observe it, they were able to tell what it was from just the spikes alone.

"Hang on...Isn't that the remains of the Tree Behemoth?!" Twilight's ears shot up.

"Sure is!" Rainbow Dash gulped. "It survived?! And it's still around?!"

"I thought it was done for?" Pinkie scratched her head. "How'd it take this explosion?"

"I think I can guess how. Twilight slowly approached the root. "That blast seemed to a magic blast from how it appeared. And the Tree Behemoth was born from Rift energy. Equestrian magic doesn't have any effect against Rift energy...So it would make sense that this root wouldn't feel the explosion.

"Ooh..." Pinkie, Rarity and Rainbow Dash nodded. "Really?"

"But...Not sure that matters now." Twilight sighed. But just as she said that the root suddenly started moving, startling everyone. It started growing as more roots suddenly started popping out of the ground at random.

Everyone backed up, witnessing the sudden resurgence of Tree Behemoth as all the small roots started moving about after a few of them sprouted.

They wrapped around each other as the blue and purple Rift energy started forming once they made contact with each other. The energy lit up the now barren ground, giving it some colour.

"What is it doing?!" Rainbow Dash pulled her Poke Ball out, ready to potentially tackle the Tree Behemoth if it was resurfacing.

"Wait!" Twilight halted Rainbow from taking action as she paid careful attention to the roots. "Let's watch..."

They watched instead of interacting with the roots. Perhaps, it wasn't acting hostile. The roots started dancing around while blue and purple sparkles flew out of them, dropping like snow.

Soon, the roots began transforming into an assortment of various botanic things. Trees were suddenly starting to form from the roots themselves, the ground was shifting from a barren and dry surface to slowly bringing grass to it.

The Tree Behemoth was rebuilding and restoring the Everfree Forest.

"It's bringing the forest back..." Twilight put it together quickly, noticing what the Tree Behemoth was doing.

"Say what? Bringing it back?" Rainbow Dash's eyebrow had been raised.

"Oooh..." Pinkie gawked.

"Wait, why exactly?" Rarity asked.

"I don't know." Twilight shook her head. "But it might be that the Tree Behemoth is trying to restore its home. The seeds were planted by Discord and only amplified by Rift magic. So some Equestrian magic is still in it."

"So...Everfree's gonna come back?" said Rainbow Dash.

"Looks like it. But it may take some time. And it might be under the influence of the Behemoth from now on." Twilight observed.

"And Zecora?" Pinkie went up to Twilight.

"I don't know..." Twilight grumbled. "But I'm not willing to give up just yet. Let's search Ponyville and see if we can find her. I hope she's alright."

The Pokemon House. The lower sections.

When entering the large building of the Pokemon House, there were two different stairs. One that led to the upstairs and another that focused on the downstairs.

Obviously, this Ground and Dark area Fluttershy spoke of was located here. Ground and Dark Pokemon tend to come here often and hang out instead of just sitting out in the daylight like the rest of their fellow Pocket Monsters. But, despite how deep down it was in the house, it was fairly cosy looking.

Team Rocket and Zecora had brought the cauldron down here, placing it in the darkest corner of the room. Krookodile told his fellow Ground and Dark-Type Pokemon to keep a good eye and not to interact with this cauldron. Anyone who touches the liquid inside will have unpredictable results to their bodies that might be good or bad.

"There. No way she'll head in here. Hopefully." Jessie uttered.

"Now what do we do?" Meowth asked.

"We stay here and make sure that unicorn doesn't get her hooves on it." James tapped the cauldron. "We have all these Pokemon also keeping guard too."

"Hopefully that is the case." Zecora shuddered. "We have to hope she can be driven back to her world where it is apparently all deep space."

"Pah. It'll be fine." Jessie chuckled. "After all, the twerps and twerpettes never fail to get rid of some villains. It's practically their job."

"Tell that to the upcoming invasion. Think the twerps ever dealt with something like that?" Meowth sighed.

"An invasion isn't that big of a deal. We've seen and experienced worse." Jessie scoffed. "Just let the twerps and Equestria beat that Empress Twilight or whatever, send her back to her universe and the whole thing's done for. Easy."

"You make it sound easy..." James and Meowth both said.

"So!" Jessie sat down, crossing her arms and legs. "Let's just wait for all of this to blow over."

"I wouldn't rest so casually during a time like this, Jessie," Zecora warned. "Before we know it, this whole situation could spiral out of control easily."

Zecora was the most aware of this all. She could already tell how large of a threat Luster Dawn was. And to the rest of Ponyville and possibly beyond.

All they could do now was sit here and wait. But, during the time they had, Zecora put her hoof on her chin as her mind was starting to spark, slowly conjuring up a plan.

A plan that could greatly benefit them.

Twilight's Castle.

Luster Dawn had arrived at the outside of Twilight's castle, standing before the door. Since it reminded Luster of her Empress' own castle in her universe, she actually chose to respect the building without blowing the door or walls down with her magic like always.

Instead, Luster simply let herself in by casually opening the door with her magic. She was now inside Twilight's castle. Uninvited and not here on friendly terms.

"Now...Let's see if they're here." She believed Team Rocket and Zecora could've retreated here. And if not, Luster would simply keep on looking.

When entering the castle, she noticed how the indoors were vastly different from her universe while still feeling familiar. The protege of the Empress quietly closed the door behind her, making sure not to attract any noise. She wanted to be stealthy about this.

The room fell silent as there wasn't really anyone downstairs. But that didn't mean this entire castle was empty with no one present. While Twilight may not be at her castle at the moment, there were others currently living here.

Those being Nyx, Cocoa, Rosestar, Starlight Glimmer, Spike and Togekiss. They were still inside of the castle, doing whatever and enjoying their day. Although, they had all heard the massive golden explosion from far away as well. No one in Ponyville could really ignore it.

Luster Dawn searched the downstairs of the castle, searching for the cauldron. She had already received a plethora of objects from the Pokemon World after being ordered by Empress Twilight to do so. Now, all she needed was that cauldron and that would be the end of it.

But, try as she might, she couldn't find anything downstairs. So, the upstairs was the next best option as she made her way there. Approaching the higher levels would mean drawing attention that she didn't need. However, Luster believed that no one was here at the moment.

How wrong she was.

Because the moment she arrived upstairs, the unicorn came across two faces who had just shown up at the right time. Two faces who were also unicorns like Luster.

Sunset Shimmer and Starlight Glimmer, of course.

The unicorn duo turned around, facing their fellow unicorn as their eyes locked. Everything froze between them, along with the atmosphere.

"Who are you?" Sunset and Starlight asked.

"These two..." Luster actually recognized and knew about Sunset and Starlight both. Starlight was known since an alternate universe Starlight is working alongside the Empress and Sunset was a different story. "My, they look like they were cloned using DNA from the Empress..."

"Are you new here? You don't look like you're from Ponyville?" Starlight questioned.

"Hm? Oh, yeah. I'm new here." Luster decided to play it safe and keep a low profile for the time being. Until she found the cauldron here that is. "I'm just a new student of Emp- I mean, Princess Twilight Sparkle."

"New student? Like me?" Starlight pointed her hoof at herself. "Wait, when?"

"Just now."

"Oh. What crazy evil thing did you do to get Twilight to reform you?" Sunset questioned. "Did you try to gain a ton of magic power for yourself?"

"Or enslave a town to follow your own ideal?" Starlight chimed in.

"Oh..." Luster scrunched her face, trying to come up with a lie. Although, what she was about to say wasn't a lie but actually something she did. Fairly recent too. "Well, I broke into some random buildings and stole a plethora of power objects. Mainly the Pokemon World."

"Seriously?" Sunset jeered back. "Well, it's a bit like mine I guess. But are you really her new student?"

"Yes, of course, I am. Reformed and everything. She's already told me about you two. Sunset Shimmer. Starlight Glimmer."

"Uh-huh...wait, who are you, exactly?" Starlight was curious about her name.

"My name?" Luster shot up after hearing that. She couldn't give her real name out in case they get suspicious. Considering that there is actually someone within this castle that knows of Luster Dawn. Three rather. So a fake name was due. "Oh. It's Dawn Star."

"Dawn Star. Well uh...nice to meet you Dawn Star." Starlight went over, holding her hoof out. "Sorry for the kinda awkward introduction. We just-"

"Oh, don't worry. I know you're not fully convinced I am her student. But I assure you, I am. You could even say I'm her protege." Luster Dawn was actually half right in this scenario.

"Protege?" Both Sunset and Starlight pulled back.

"Mhm." She displayed a cocky smile as she walked past the two unicorns. " A one of a kind and essentially her successor. And dare I say, next in line to be an alicorn."

"H-H-Hold on, what?!" Starlight needed some time to process these words as she turned to face Starlight. "Since when? And why not me?"

"Oh, don't you worry about that." Luster laughed as she trotted away, walking into the nearest room of the upstairs. "I won't be here for long. I've got places to be. That's not a problem right?"

"A Problem?" Sunset raised an eyebrow.

"Well, from the look on your face, you're not too fond of me right now. Why's that I wonder?"

"...Don't worry about it. If you're not going to be long, then make it quick." Sunset replied as she kept her guard up. Both unicorns stared at each other in the eyes for a few seconds with Starlight looking at both of them.

"I won't." Luster turned around. "Trust me."

"Hmm..." Sunset narrowed her eyes as she was very uncertain about all of this. She watched Luster walk into the nearest room, not saying a word. "Something about her's not sitting right with me."

"Which part of her is it?" Starlight asked.

"It's weird. Her face looked like she was telling the truth about her being Twilight's student and...protege...but something's not right here."

"Wha? She's like, telling a half-truth?"

"Probably. Best we keep an eye on her." Sunset gently followed Luster Dawn along with Starlight. "The old me would've definitely caused a major scene."

The unicorn duo began following Luster Dawn, unsure of the feeling and senses they were getting from her. Cautious, they kept an eye on her, heading into the room she entered.

However, Luster had already entered another room due to her aimless searching for the cauldron. However, even when searching for it, other things in this castle were piquing her interest.

Due to this being a different universe from her own, that meant some spells were exclusive to this universe that cannot be found in any other world. Luster looked over at the spellbook, opening them to see what they entail.

"Hm. Underwater breathing spell. Nifty." She looked at one of the spells, interested in its potential use. She looked at other unique spells that were perfect for certain situations. Luster felt like it would be a great idea to bring this along.

And that's what she did. By placing it in her bag, Luster had stolen one of Twilight's books for herself. Those would come in good use. But besides that, Luster kept searching the rooms on the upstairs as there were no other books that caught her interest. Plus, that one book already made her bag full as she entered the next room.

Sunset and Starlight had arrived in the room, just missing Luster as she had already gone somewhere else. They weren't even aware that she had taken one of Twilight's books for herself.

"Just missed her. Come on." Sunset ordered as Starlight followed her.

3 minutes later.

Luster's upstairs search was starting to come to an end as a few rooms were remaining that she hadn't yet explored. After this, she would check the rest of Ponyville for the cauldron.

However, before that, something else of equal importance caught her attention. She arrived at the next room where Togekiss was lying about, sleeping relaxing. But next to Togekiss was the gateway to Pyrestar's world.

"Toge..." The Jubilee Pokemon snored.

"Hello there~" Luster whistled to Togekiss, making the Jubilee Pokemon nervous. But, Luster Dawn's attention quickly turned to face the gateway within this room as that really piqued her interest. "Oh...What's this now?"

"Kiss...?" Togekiss slowly opened her eyes, hearing Luster Dawn's hoofsteps.

"A gateway?" Luster approached the gateway, wondering if this is where Team Rocket and Zecora had fled to. "Perhaps they went through here."

"T-Togekiss?" Togekiss had woken up as she witnessed the random unicorn passed through the gateway, not knowing what world she was about to enter. Yet at least. Togekiss wasn't sure what to do in this situation since Luster Dawn just came out of nowhere during her sleep. Plus, she, unfortunately, doesn't have danger senses like Absol. And she was still a child mentally. "Toge!"

Once Luster Dawn passed through the gateway, she quickly came across the secret base in Pyrestar's world that Twilight and her friends had made.

"What the...?" Luster Dawn looked at the base as she wasn't expecting to arrive in a place such as this. A random landscape from the Pokemon World was the most expected. Not this.

Curious about this base, Luster Dawn took a small viewing experience of it, noticing its unique aesthetic design. Since this was a base made by Twilight's friends, mostly everything matched their design tastes. The notable ones were Rarity and Pinkie with their abundance of balloons, confetti, gems and fashion just plastered everywhere. But, Luster didn't know that.

However, she quickly came across Twilight's section of this secret hideout base. And Twilight's section was more heavily focused on the research part of this world as she had many forms of equipment to help with that research.

Luster stood before Twilight's section, looking over the table of items. But one item caught her eye. A sheet of paper with some words on it. It looked incomplete for the time being. Luster noticed the most prominent words were on that sheet as she used her magic to pick the paper up.

"What's this now?" She began reading what the words said. "The research at Pyrestar's world...Sheet one?" Luster Dawn immediately shot up after hearing that. "This gateway...connects to the same world where Ghetsis resides? Oh, that's very interesting..." The unicorn giggled as she made an excellent find today.

Now she knew about the secret gateway that connected to this world and what Twilight and her friends were planning. This was valuable information to return to her Empress.

Meanwhile, with Sunset and Starlight, they were still following Luster's trail. They were getting closer by this point, but right now, Luster Dawn was about to leave due to her finding nothing about the cauldron. But she did find two valuable objects that would benefit her and the Empress greatly.

In one of the rooms, Nyx was sitting about with her Eevee, unaware of what was going on within the castle. She heard the explosion earlier though.

"Eevee-vee..." When caressing her Eevee, Sunset and Starlight opened the door, coming across Nyx's room. "Vee?"

"Hm?" Nyx looked over at the two unicorns. "Oh. Sunset Shimmer. Starlight Glimmer. Can I help you?"

"Yeah. Have you seen a unicorn pass by here?" Sunset asked.

"Aside from the plethora of unicorns that live in this castle? Which one?"

"Somepony new. Her name is Dawn Star. Apparently, she's one Twilight students like me." Starlight explained. "Protege apparently which is just..."

"Protege..."? Nyx narrowed her eyes after hearing what Starlight said. A protege of Twilight doesn't exist. At least, not in this world and not yet at this point in time. But, Nyx, throughout her many universal adventures via an escape from a tyrannical force, recognized that status. "She said her name was Dawn Star? What colour was she?"

"Uh...Pink and gold with dawn Cutie Mark." Sunset described Luster.

"THAT'S LUSTER DAWN!" Nyx bellowed, blowing Sunset and Starlight back with the force of her voice. "She's here?!"

"Wait!? Luster Dawn?" Starlight held her head.

"Seriously?!" Sunset winced.

"Eevee?"

"That explosion must've been from her! Where is she!?" Nyx clearly wasn't happy about Luster's arrival. And why wouldn't she? She worked alongside Empress Twilight who had conquered and ruined so many worlds. Including her own.

Now that they were aware of Luster Dawn being in this world, everything is slowly starting to escalate. Or perhaps, it's already escalated and was only reaching the rising action to the boiling point.

Luster Dawn's search in this world has yet to be finished as the journey continues.
