The Canterlot Tournament resumes

Author's Note:

Finally back to this.

The Canterlot Tournament has officially returned.

The ponies who were taking part in it immediately made their way to Canterlot to resume their upcoming battles. Unfortunately, Ben couldn't arrive to give any announcements since he was feeling a bit under the weather, so it was up to his Gothitelle to take his place.

All the ponies who were still in the tournament remembered which Pokemon they would end up using on the third day and their matchups. Some were rental teams like Applejack renting a Venasaur since she only owns Grovyle as her official Pokemon.

There were a few matches that were never seen due to the sudden break. But now that they're all back, the matches can resume and advance onwards to the third day.

As always, the waiting room was where the participants gathered up with their partners, waiting for their turn to arrive. And for the crowd, they took their seats, gossiping and chatting away about who will end up winning this entire tournament.

"Glad to be back here." Rainbow Dash sat down on the waiting room couch. "Can't believe we almost missed Hearth's Warming because of this."

"I hear tomorrow's a 3v3 this time. For the whole 3rd day." Applejack answered. Due to learning that it would end up being a 3v3 for the 3rd day, she got yet another Pokemon from the rental teams. Now she had Venasaur and a random Pokemon.

"You know. With all this battling, I think my eyes have gotten pretty-" A pony was chatting away until something had interrupted him.

That something was the entrance of none other than Adagio Dazzle herself. And with Adagio present here, silence filled the room. Whether out of animosity or fear.

But this time, Adagio wasn't absorbing any of their negativity. Not after the harsh truth, she had just been given a few days ago. Adagio didn't even pay attention to the ponies who were giving various looks at her.

"Can't believe she came back here." Rainbow Dash whispered. "I didn't think she would."

Adagio could hear all their words thanks to sirens having good hearing. But she didn't have the spirit to reply at all. She just stood on her lonesome, distant from the others.

Adagio's match with Rarity would end up occurring in 30 minutes. Right after everypony else finishes up on their matches. But now she wasn't in the mood to defeat Rarity at all.

"Krick?" Kricketot who always stayed inside of Adagio's mane was hoping that his trainer could recover from this. After all, Kricketot heard everything that Empress Twilight told Adagio. Knowing about this made the Cricket Pokemon worried about his trainer and her future.

"Not now, Kricketot," Adagio responded to him. "Not in the mood."

"Tot..." Hearing his trainer's commands, Kricketot returned inside of Adagio's huge mane.

With the tournament resuming, two pegasi stepped onto the battlefield with the crowd getting pumped up. The referee was there once again along with the announcer.

And with the addition of the Pokemon School, the Gym Leaders had come by to watch this tournament go down. Although, some of them couldn't make it since they have jobs back at their region as Gym Leaders.

But for the ones who don't get trainers around their gym that often, they were in the clear. Unbeknownst to the Gym Leaders, there was one matchup that everypony was looking forward to tomorrow.

Rarity vs Adagio.

And even more unbeknownst to them, both trainers had Ultra Beasts in their possession. So when that matchup arrives tomorrow, they'll have a battle that nopony here will ever forget.

The battle had begun between the two trainers with their Croconaw and Donphan. As always, seeing a Pokemon battle was exhilarating to the eyes. The flash of movements and the impactful sounds of attacks being unleashed was always a joy to see and hear.

Everypony but Adagio was enjoying this. Adagio naturally didn't find any interest in this tournament other than crushing Twilight and her friends right in front of everypony else, but now, even the drive to defeat the Mane 6 has essentially faded away.

Every passing second, Adagio continuously remembers those exact words that Empress Twilight told her. Words that will never leave her head.

"This fate that you speak of...only exists here."

For the entirety of the second day, she would remain like this. Completely sombre.

However, this wouldn't go unnoticed for long. Since there is one Pokemon in particular that can sense emotions on account of being a Pokemon all about emotions.

That being Celestia's Kirlia, Passion. Her ability to sense any emotion isn't limited to her trainer. Everypony present in Canterlot is radiating emotions that Passion constantly feels.

For the majority, she's been sensing positive emotions due to the tournament resuming and the exciting battle currently taking place.

However, one single emotion that is out of place can be easily identified by the Emotion Pokemon. Adagio's emotion put Passion on high alert. Not only can she sense any emotion, but she can also detect who the emotion belongs to.

"Kir! Kirlia!" Passion nudged Celestia's hoof, grabbing her attention.

"Hm? What's wrong Passion?" Celestia turned her head away from the battle, focusing on her partner.

"Lia!" Passion knew just spouting words wouldn't work, so she tried utilizing telepathy. Her telepathy is still fairly weak and she can only use it for 5 seconds at best. But it's all she has at the moment. With the amount of time she had, she uttered the words. "Adagio...is...sad." And that's the best she could muster.

"Adagio is sad, you say." Celestia stood up. If Passion mentions how somepony is feeling upset, which she rarely does, then its something that Celestia cannot ignore. "Alright. Arcanine. Stay here."

"Arca." Arcanine was already snug and cosy on the floor so he wasn't going anywhere.

Celestia knew that something was off if Adagio of all ponies is upset at the moment. Adagio was free at the moment. After all, before the tournament went on a break, she had already gone through her matchup.

By sending herself to the waiting room via teleportation, Princess Celestia appeared before everypony inside the room, causing them all to stray their attention away from the battle.

"Oh! Princess Celestia!" A pony gasped.

"Don't tell me she's participating in this tournament too?!" Rainbow Dash pulled her mane, screeching uncontrollably.

"Not at all. I'm here to see somepony important." Celestia replied, looking for Adagio. By navigating her head across the room, she spotted the siren sitting alone in the very corner. "There she is."

"Hm? She wants Adagio?" Applejack raised an eyebrow.

"Maybe she's finally gonna do something about her?" whispered Rainbow Dash.

With Celestia approaching Adagio, the siren looked up, seeing the alicorn gaze down upon her. "What?" She spoke to Celestia.

"Adagio. Are you alright?" Celestia asked with a genuine look on her face.

Hearing Princess Celestia ask that simple question wasn't something that Adagio could respond to with her usual prideful nature. In fact, this is the first time anyone has ever asked her if she was alright in years.

"No." She replied with actual honesty for once.

"Hm." Celestia nodded. "May I speak with you in private, Adagio?"

"Sure, whatever." Adagio scoffed.

With both Celestia and Adagio leaving the waiting room, everypony wondered why Celestia wasn't taking any action on Adagio. Although, they had no idea why these two aren't hostile with each other.

The area they sat together before was, of course, Canterlot Gardens and that one single bench.

"So tell me, Adagio. What happened that has made even you feel like this?" Celestia asked her. "You're usually so strong-willed."

"If I told you, you'd find it unbelievable."

"Not at all." Celestia shook her head. "You can ask me anything, no matter how grand it is."

"Fine." Adagio took a deep breath. "I just learned that the fate of my species, that cruel fate that endangers our lives, isn't as prominent as I thought."

"What do you mean by that?"

"I mean...it only exists here. And nowhere else. Apparently, in every other universe, this fate doesn't exist for alternate variations of me. So in short, the other universes that have sirens have it lucky. While I don't."

"I see..." Celestia understood what Adagio meant by that.

"It's not fair." Adagio stomped her hooves on the bench. "Why does it have to be just this world?" Thinking about it made Adagio almost tear up but she was strong enough to hold back her tears. "All this time I thought that it was something that could exist for every universe. That I was right all along. Guess that all goes down the drain."

"Fate is unpredictable, Adagio." Celestia put her wing over the distraught siren. "Unfortunately, despite it being a single force, it can have infinite possibilities. Ones that we aren't prepared for at all."

"That's an understatement." Adagio looked down. "What am I supposed to do now?"

"Hm. At a time like this, I would go to somepony who'll be there for you."

"Like who?" Adagio whimpered.

"Well. You still have your sisters, don't you? And you still love them, correct?"

Celestia's words made Adagio recall something that Aria said to her back then before the tournament broke up for Hearth's Warming and Christmas.

"But...That doesn't mean we hate you. You're still our sister."

"Yeah, I do." Adagio nodded.

"Then after the second day, go to them. Family should always be there each other." Celestia hopped off the bench. "Good job on detecting her, Passion."

"Kirlia." Passion hopped on Celestia's back.

The princess and the Pokemon left Adagio with one final advice concerning her sisters. For once, Adagio had to agree with somepony. The best thing she could do now was to head towards her sisters.

Back at the tournament, the Croconaw vs Donphan matchup had come to an end, with Croconaw finishing the battle with a mighty Ice Fang to finish Donphan off.

"Donphan is unable to battle! Croconaw wins! Which means the victor is Cloverpad!" said the Referee.

"Yes! Great job, Croconaw!" Cloverpad flew over to his partner, hugging Croconaw. The Big Jaw Pokemon returned the low back with a ferocious bite.

"Naw!"

"Ow! T-Thanks, Croconaw." Cloverpad winced.

With that battle over, it was clear that the tournament still had its usual excitement packed with it even after the break. After this, the remaining trainers came onto the battlefield to emerge victorious over each other.

There were 22 trainers left until the day would come to an end, transitioning into tomorrow. The crowd watched as all these battles went on. Some were quick, some took a while and some got so messy and chaotic that it was hard to tell what exactly was going on.

Applejack had her turn. Although, she's grown so much as a trainer that all she needed was Grovyle to win this. She didn't even use the rental Pokemon Venasaur once.

"Grovyle! Leaf Blade!"

"Vyle!" Grovyle was succeeding greatly in this entire matchup as he already took out one Pokemon by himself. He rushed in, slashing his bladed leaves on an opposing Magmar, taking it out in just two hits.

"Mag!" The Spitfire Pokemon went flying across the battlefield from that mighty Leaf Blade. Usually, it wouldn't be super-effective, but Applejack's Grovyle was strong enough to take on Pokemon that it would usually be weak against. By tumbling on the ground, Magmar fainted. "Magmar..."

"Magmar is unable to battle! Grovyle wins! Which means the victor is Applejack!"

"Nice quick work, partner!"

"Grovyle!"

"Just two hits?! How strong is that Grovyle?!" The announcer gasped.

"That's my sister!" Apple Bloom held Sweetie Belle tight, cheering for her big sister.

"Apple Bloom...P-P-Please..." Sweetie Belle was pleading for air whilst being held by an earth pony's supernatural strength.

With Applejack coming out victorious, the matches that would follow next were the ones that got everypony's excitement building. The top 3 trainers would be battling once more.

And like always, they didn't disappoint and showed off just why they're the top 3.

Spitfire and Daylight already finished their battles by using just their Medicham and Froslass. And currently, Luna was about to finish her battle off. Her Musharna made quick work of another trainer's Crawdaunt by using Energy Ball. And without losing any of her two Pokemon.

"Musharna! Use Psychic to bring Trumbeak over! Then use Hypnosis!" Luna commanded.

"Musha..." The Drowsing Pokemon forced the Bugle Beak Pokemon to come towards her by surrounding Trumbeak in a psychic aura. Once Trumbeak was pulled towards her, Musharna sent a spiral of hypnotic energy that immediately put Trumbeak to sleep.

"Beak..."

"Ah! Trumbreak!" Trumbeak's trainer screeched.

"Excellent. Return, Musharna." Suddenly, Luna returned Musharna, substituting for another Pokemon. "You're next, Excadrill!" Excadrill was sent out to finish the job.

"Drill!"

"Finish it off with Metal Claw!" By rushing in forward, Excadrill attacked a dozed off Trumbeak who couldn't really do anything to fight back at the moment.

One single Metal Claw was all it took to take down the opposing Pokemon and win the match for Princess Luna. The opposing Trumbeak was slammed into the ground by Metal Claw, causing a certified faint.

"Trumbeak..."

"Trumbeak is unable to battle! Excadrill wins! Thus the victor is Princess Luna!"

"A fine job, Musharna."

"Sharna!" Out of joy, Musharna flew over to her trainer, biting on Luna's head.

"Musharna, no!" But it was too late. Musharna was already on Luna's head.

With that battle over, the last bunch of trainers had their battles. While not as exciting as the top 3, they were enjoyable nonetheless.

And with the final battle coming to an end, the second-day matchups had finally finished up. Coming back to this tournament was worth it.

Ponies either went home or stayed in Canterlot for the night until the third day of the tournament arrives. Although, from what Gothitelle could tell, the number of trainers left might not fill up the entire week. Probably 5 days at best.

With everypony scattering across the streets of Canterlot, one pony, in particular, was waiting for two important individuals. That of course being Adagio.

Celestia's words really stuck to her. Wouldn't be the first time an alicorn ruler's words left a huge impact on Adagio. She waited for her two sisters to come out until she spotted them.

Sonata and Aria were chatting together, just being happy with smiles on their faces. Well, smiles on Sonata's face. Aria doesn't do smiling that much. But she was happy nonetheless.

Approaching her younger sisters, Adagio was ready to finally confront them without any hostility this time. Aria and Sonata quickly snapped their head towards Adagio's direction, noticing that their older sister was heading their way.

"What do you want now, Adagio?" Aria stood in front of Sonata. "If it's about-"

"It's not what you think it is." Adagio interrupted.

"Oh, really? You're not here to take us away? Then why are you here?" Sonata wondered.

Adagio would have to say words that she hoped would never come out of her move. For once, she would have to toss away all her hubris and vanity for this one situation.

"You two. We're still sisters, right?" Adagio asked with a melancholy tone.

Seeing their older sister in a state that they've never seen her in before was surreal to Sonata and Aria. But that surreal sight was enough to let them know that whatever happened to Adagio must've really hit her. Adagio is never upset. And when she is, it normally involves throwing or smashing something.

"Duh. Of course, we are." Aria replied.

"Mhm." Sonata nodded aggressively.

"You don't really hate me after all?"

"I wouldn't say hate, I'd say disappointed in you." Aria shook her head. "By the way, what's got you acting like this? This is making me super uncomfortable."

"Yeah. It's not like you to be all down and-" Sonata couldn't finish her sentence at all. That was because Adagio suddenly rushed in and gave both of her sisters an unexpected hug out of nowhere.

"I love you two idiots. I really mean it." Adagio for once showed off all her love and compassion to her younger sisters. For the first time in years.

Sonata and Aria looked at each other for a bit. At first, they were confused, but then, they nodded at each other in understanding.

At that moment, that same golden light that Adagio exhibits at rare occurrences had managed to show up once more. This mysterious gold light performed its magic once more. It made both Sonata and Aria feel refreshed. Whatever this light was, it seems to always leave that single effect on anyone that is affected by it.

"Alright." Aria pushed Adagio off. "You're gonna make me feel all mushy and I don't want that."

"I didn't know you were so good at hugging. Can you do it again?" Sonata squeed.

"You two...Will you cheer for me in my match tomorrow?" Adagio asked, trying to hold back her tears again.

"Hmm..." Aria thought about it for a second. "Eh, sure whatever. You seem like you're getting into it a bit anyway-" Just then, both Aria and Sonata noticed that Adagio was struggling to maintain her tears. "Are you... crying?"

"No! I just got out of the fountain earlier!" Adagio covered her eyes with her hoof. "See you tomorrow."

"Why would she be in the fountain?" Sonata scratched her mane.

"Forget it, Sonata. I think we've got something good to look forward to in the future."

Perhaps they do. Adagio's words to her sisters was something she never knew had to be done. Celestia watched the whole thing go down as always.

However, it wasn't Adagio telling her sisters that she loves them that got the sun princess's attention. It was the golden light that came out of Adagio's body. She recalls how her mother Sunlight once saw Adagio's mother Vivace let out that same light. But it only ever happened once. Now, Celestia was curious as to what that light really meant.

With the Canterlot Tournament finally returning and the number of trainers decreasing, the tournament to see how far everypony has come in terms of strength carries on with the anticipation of Rarity vs Adagio closing in. Although, when that matchup comes, it might play out differently than what they all imagined as the Canterlot Tournament continues.
