Evading Sparks

The Canterlot Tournament continues.

The current match between Scootaloo and Velvetwind is about to take place. It shall begin once the referee says those magical worlds.

"Battle start!"

"Pachirisu, use Charge Beam!" Scootaloo made the first move.

"Pachi!" The EleSquirell Pokemon lowered its head, summoning an orb of electricity in front of its face. The orb had released a bundle of charged electricity that raced towards the Blimp Pokemon.

"Driflblim! Fly over and use Minimize!"

"Drif..." The Blimp Pokemon had emanated a pinkish colour from its body as it flew over the bundled electricity with ease, evading it. And speaking of evading, that's exactly what this move was for. The pinkish aura around Driflblim had expanded for a split second before shrinking down.

"What did that do?" Sweetie Belle asked, confused.

"It's Minimize!" Ash leaned forward. "Now Drifblim's gonna be hard to hit!"

"Okay..." Scootaloo, who was unaware of what the move specifically does, had just shrugged it off as either a power boost or strength boost. One of the two. "Pachirisu! Fire Charge Beam again!"

"Chirisu!" Another bundle of charged electricity was shot towards Driflbim once more.

"Dodge and use Shadow Ball!" With even less effort this time, Driflbim avoided the Electric-Type attack without even trying. Minimize had made it so that it wouldn't need to worry about getting hit by the super-effective move constantly.

A ball of shadows emerged in front of Driflblim as it sent it straight towards the opposing Pokemon. The EleSquirrel Pokemon had been struck, getting hit first instead of Driflbim.

"Pa!" Pachirisu tumbled on the ground, already taking some pretty big damage. What didn't help was that Pachirisu is at the end of the day a Glass Cannon.

"Don't worry, Pachirisu! Let's try Spark!"

Recovering from her tumble, Pachirisu had surrounded herself in yellow electricity, raising her head directly at Drifblim. With a sudden burst of electricity, the Electric-Type rocketed off the ground as a lightning bolt-shaped trail was left behind.

"Keep on dodging and use Shadow Ball one more time!"

More dodging on Driflbim's part. But that was the obvious choice. With Minimize, Driflblim wouldn't even need to try and dodge that much. By zipping to the side and avoiding Pachirisu all together, the Blimp Pokemon had conjured up yet another Shadow Ball, preparing to fire it.

"Ah! Pachirisu! Use Spark to dodge!" A good call on Scootaloo's part. She took a strategy out of Ash's book by having her use a move to evade.

"Pachi!" Pachirisu turned around, zipping past Shadow Ball as she returned to ground level. "Chirisu..."

"Now! Keep using Spark until it lands!"

And so began a scenario that involved constant moving around. One was trying to land a hit whilst the other continued to evade the opposing Pokemon.

"This is a bit painful to my eyes!" The announcer rubbed his eyes, unable to comprehend what he's currently seeing. "Pachirisu can't seem to connect with Driflblim at all! And Drifblim's just casually dodging with ease!"

"Chi! Chi!" Pachirisu kept on trying to connect her hits but it was still no use. Minimize had really helped Drifblim out a lot.

"We have to get at least one hit in..." Scootaloo grumbled, getting nervous.

"Alright, Drifblim! Phantom Force!"

"Blim..." A thin purple portal appeared behind Drifblim as it hovered back inside of it, disappearing from the sight of everypony and Pachirisu.

"Pa?" Pachirisu gasped, shocked that her opposing Pokemon just vanished. The portal had even gone with it.

"What the? Where'd it go?" Scootaloo pulled back.

"Drifblim's gone! Whatever that move was, you can already tell that both Scootaloo and Pachirisu are worried and confused!" said the announcer.

"Phantom Force." Ash suddenly spoke. "Drifblim could appear from anywhere now."

"Pika..."

"Where is it..." Scootloo bit her hoof, unsure of where the Blimp Pokemon could pop out from. She was really feeling the tension now. The match was already in its early moments and she was struggling. That's when Scootaloo's mind had a small little spark. "Wait! If Drifblims a Ghost-Type...Pachirisu! Use Spark and move all over the place like crazy!"

"Pachirisu!" Pachirisu did just that. Surrounding herself in electricity once more, the EleSquirrel then proceeded to haphazardly move about at lightning speeds, leaving behind multiple lightning bolt trails.

"What's she planning?" This actually took Velvetwind back. Now she was the one confused. "Drifblim! Come out and attack!"

"Drif!" A purple portal had once again appeared out thin air. This time, Drifblim was coming right through it. But when it returned to the outside, Pachirisu had managed to make contact with Drifblim due to how she was just dashing about without any sense of direction in her mind. "BLIM!"

"Gotcha!" Scootaloo found her opportunity. Having Pachirisu move about with Spark was a smart move on her part.

"Ah! Drifblim!" Velvetwind gasped.

"Now's our chance! Spark one more time!" Pachirisu once again threw herself towards the opposing Pokemon. And this time, she made a direct hit. Second time in a row even. With Drifblim still recovering from the first Spark, the second one was just waiting to hit a caught off guard Drifblim in seconds.

And just as she hoped, it dealt super-effective damage, pushing the Blimp Pokemon back. The Spark had even paralyzed Drifblim, making its Minimize non-existent.

"Drifblim! Are you okay?!"

"Drif!"

"Whew. I thought Scootaloo was in the rough spot there." Apple Bloom let out a sigh of relief.

"Did she change up Drifblim's contest moves just for this?" Sweetie Belle wondered. She was curious about her next encounter with Velvetwind in a Pokemon Contest if she uses the same Drifblim which was once a Drifloon.

"That could've been rough..." Scootaloo lowered her head. "Good job, Pachirisu!"

"Pachi!"

"Drifblim! Use Minimize one more time!"

"I don't know what it is...But I won't let you get the chance! Spark!"

"Chirisu!" Pachirisu didn't give Drifblim any time to prepare Minimize. Charging towards her foe, Pachirisu smashed into Drifblim's face which was also its entire body. Pachirisu's head ended up getting stuck inside Drifblim's ghostly body as the Spark added onto the extra electric damage that the paralyze was already giving.

"Quick, Drifblim! Brutal Swing!" Realizing that using Minimize wasn't going to happen at this point, Velvetwind went on the offensive.

"Blim!" The Blimp Pokemon spun all four of its limbs that were embedded with dark energy violently, smacking the EleSquirrel Pokemon straight in the face, leaving a mark as well. A second Brutal Swing had been unleashed on her, causing Pachirisu to be knocked back.

"Charge Beam!" Whilst the Electric-Type was still airborne, she sent some charged electricity in the amount of time she was in the air.

"Shadow Ball!" Quickly countering, Shadow Ball from Drifblim had made contact with Charge Beam as the two moves cancelled each other out. As smoke emerged from the attack collision, both Pokemon stared each other down.

Drifblim looked like it would be the first to give out due to the super-effective hits and paralyze effect. But Pachirisu being the Glass Cannon she was might not be able to withstand another hit. So it all came down to who would get off the final hit and come out on top.

"Drifblim and I refuse to lose. We're going to shine just as much as we do in a contest!"

"Drifblim!"

"Pachirisu and I won't lose either! She's gonna take me straight to the Equestria League one day!"

"Pachirisu!

"Drifblim! Shadow Ball!"

"Pachirisu! Dodge with Spark and head in!"

Flying back to get some distance, Drifblim sent out a Shadow Ball to put an end to this battle once and for all. However, Pachirisu being the speedy little critter that she is, evaded the Shadow Ball by propelling herself to the side. She followed up with the electricity still surrounding her body, setting her eyes directly towards Drifblim.

"Dodge it!" Once Pachirisu dashed into the air, Drifblim just barely managed to avoid Spark as little volts had struck its limbs. "Now use Phantom Force!" Heading into a purple hole that appeared, Drifblim had vanished out of thin air, leaving Pachirisu by herself.

"Don't worry Pachirisu! Do what you did before and move around!" Scootaloo went for the same strategy that countered Phantom Force before.

"Chi!" Once again, Pachirisu had frantically dashed around the stadium, preparing to catch Drifblim off guard.

But Velvetwind wasn't ready to fall for it a second time. "Come out and follow up with Brutal Swing!"

"Drif!" Drifblim reappeared, becoming visible to the eyes of everypony.

"Ah! Look out Pachirisu!" Scootaloo gasped.

"Pa!" Pachirisu, by the skin of her single bucktooth, avoided Drifblim's limbs, but her tail had been hit, causing the EleSquirrel to lose her balance. If that had fully connected, it would've been game over for the Electric-Type Pokemon. But thankfully, a Pachirisu's tail is sturdy since that's where most of its electricity is located.

"Now go!" Scootaloo yelled, commanding Pachirisu to charge in once more. And charge in she did. With a final burst of speed, she tackled herself into Drifblim with everything she had left in her.

And that one final Spark was all that she needed. Drifblim's eyes widened as it was hit square in the face at full-force. The result was the Blimp Pokemon being launched back down to the ground whilst Pachirisu spun about, holding her head.

"Drif...Blim!" Drifblim hit the ground hard, leaving behind a huge smoke cloud. Once the smoke cleared, the outcome had been revealed to the eyes of the referee. "Drif..."

"Drifblim is unable to battle! Pachirisu wins! Which means the victor is Scootaloo!"

"Awesome! Pachirisu, you aced it!" Scootaloo ran over, giving her little Electric Rodent a hug.

"Pa...Pachirisu." Pachirisu, who was on the verge of fainting, shocked Scootaloo out of love, causing her mane and tail to spike it.

"Woohoo!" Both Sweetie Belle and Apple Bloom stood up, cheering for Scootaloo and Pachirisu's victory. That's a huge win for the Crusaders in their book.

"Great job, Drifblim. You performed just as well as our contests." Velvetwind went over to Drifblim, picking her partner up.

"Blim..."

"And you did an amazing job as well, Scootaloo. Pachirisu." Velvetwind congratulated them both.

"Thanks! You almost had me there. I had no idea what a Minimize was. W-What is it actually?"

"It's a pretty useful move where it helps your Pokemon dodge attacks easier without too much effort." Velvetwind quickly explained. "But I guess the paralyzation effect negates that."

"Oooh...That is pretty useful." Scootaloo nodded.

"Tell Sweetie Belle that I plan to do even better in the contests than I did here."

"I will!"

"Pachirisu!"

"Geez..." Pinkie Pie slumped on her seat. "Those Electric Rodents are lethal. First Pikachu now Pachirisu..."

"Does that mean my Plusle and Minun are just as strong?" Sweetie Belle asked.

"They gotta be. I know my Emolga is." Apple Bloom nodded.

"Pikachu!"

"Gaping gills..." The announcer wiped some sweat off his forehead after that battle. "I would've thought the foals battling would mean things would be much more laid-back. Guess I was wrong."

Returning to the waiting room, Scootaloo let out a sigh of relief. Pokemon battles can really tire anyone out. Especially the youth. Now that her turn was done, allowing her to relax for as long as she wants until tomorrow, it was now time for Vinyl to step out there soon.

"What a rush!" Scootaloo sat down on a couch with her Pachirisu on her head.

"Chirisu."

"Awesome job out there!" Rainbow flew over to Scootaloo. "Had me worried for a sec, actually."

"Thanks, Rainbow Dash!" Scootaloo grinned.

"Just a bit more and it'll be my go." Rainbow turned around, rubbing her hooves together. Her anticipating was only increasing.

2 minutes had passed and it was Vinyl's time to battle. As usual, the two ponies sent themselves outside to the stadium to prepare themselves.

Over at the seats, Velvetwind sat down behind Sweetie Belle, waving at her fellow Pokemon Coordinator.

"What Pokemon do you think Vinyl has?" Fluttershy wondered. "I've actually never thought of that."

"Heh. She's got some pretty strong Pokemon. Two of them actually. I helped her choose her partners, after all." Ash grinned, crossing his arms. He knew exactly which Pokemon he gave Vinyl.

"Pika-Pikachu."

"Wait. Vinyl doesn't speak. How's she gonna give off any commands?" Apple Bloom scratched her mane. "Is it like Red? Are we gonna hear her speak for the first time?!"

"Well...Just wait and see." Ash calmed Apple Bloom down. They were about to witness first-hoof how DJ Pon-3 battles.

"Let's have a good one, alright?" The opposing pony from Manehattan said to Vinyl. However, she didn't get a response from DJ Pon-3. "Hm...Not much of a talker, huh? Alright then, that's fine."

"Both trainers may now bring out their Pokemon." said the Referee.

"Come out, my partner!" The Manehattan unicorn had sent out her Scrafty.

"Scrafty!"

"Ooh...Let me get a good look at that!" Sonata took out her own Pokedex, wanting to know about this shady looking Pokemon.

"Scrafty. The Hoodlum Pokemon. While mostly known for having the temperament of an aggressive ruffian, this Pokémon takes very good care of its family, friends, and territory. Groups of them beat up anything that enters their territory. Each can spit acidic liquid from its mouth. As halfhearted as this Pokémon’s kicks may seem due to it holding its shed skin, they pack enough power to shatter Conkeldurr’s concrete pillars. The one with the biggest crest is the group leader."

Vinyl did the same. One of the two partners she owned had been sent out. For this match, it was her Darmanitan.

"Darmanitan!"

"Oooh...Haven't seen that one before!" Sweetie Belle took out her Pokedex for this Pokemon she has now just discovered.

"Darmanitan. The Blazing Pokemon. Its internal fire burns at 2,500° F, making enough power that it can destroy a dump truck with one punch. When one is injured in a fierce battle, it hardens into a stone-like form. Then it meditates and sharpens its mind. Through meditation, it calms its raging spirit and hones its psychic powers."

An impressive Pokemon to look at for sure. But what was surprising to them all was the fact that Darmanitan had headphones on. Modelled right after his trainer even. From the looks of it, he was listening to some music at the moment. Most likely the same music Vinyl was listening too since both of them were bobbing their heads up and down in the same motion at the same speed.

"Headphones?" Fluttershy and the others said. This was new to all of them.

"Yeah!" Ash exclaimed, startling his friends. "WIth those headphones on, Darmanitan and Vinyl are one in the same! A perfect sync!"

"Battle start!"

The battle was on. Believing that Vinyl couldn't make a command, the Manehattan pony took advantage of this. "Scrafty! Use High Jump Kick!"

"Scra!" The Hoodlum Pokemon leapt off the ground, doing consecutive flips in the air for show. And yet, Vinyl hadn't said a word. She and Darmanitan were just enjoying the music. It looked like Scrafty's kick would connect, until the unexpected happened.

"Dar!" Darmanintan had suddenly grabbed Scrafty's leg, preventing High Jump Kick. And this was done without Vinyl saying a word. What followed was an attack. Darmanitan had used Thunder Punch with his other arm, striking the Hoodlum Pokemon straight in the face, launching him back to his trainer.

"Scrafty!" Scrafty tumbled on the ground, holding his face. "Fty..."

"Ah! Scrafty! You okay?!" His trainer gasped.

"Scra!" The Hoodlum Pokemon got back up on his feet, feeling fine. But that Thunder Punch threw him off guard.

"I don't know how you did that without saying a word...but you won't catch me off guard again! Scrafty! Stone Edge!"

"Scrafty!" Scrafty had slammed his head on the ground, causing blue crystals to pop up from the ground as they raced towards the Blazing Pokemon.

Once again. Not a word from Vinyl. Darmanitan, who was just enjoying the music, had evaded the crystal rocks with ease. He did this by jumping over them as if he was in a jungle.

"Seriously?! Try using Stone Edge again!" A second attempt was made. Perhaps more crystal stones on the battlefield will do the trick. With even more Stone Edge's filling the battlefield, it looked like Darmanitan would get hit this time.

But yet again, Darmanitan surprised everypony. While he didn't evade the crystals, he did something better. Destroying them. With the move Brick Break, the glowing blue crystals of Stone Edge had been shattered into pieces. And he did it repeatedly. In fact, the way he used Brick Break was in the same rhythm as the song he was listening to.

It was because of this rhythm that Darmanitan could perform feats that would normally require the command of the trainer to do so. The two were in perfect sync, practically unified.

"How is this possible?!" The announcer stood up from his seat. "She hasn't said a word and yet Darmanitan is effortlessly gaining the upper hoof!"

"Manitan!" Darmanitan had then grabbed the fragments of Stone Edge, flicking them towards Scrafty as the Hoodlum Pokemon had been pelted in the head by his own move.

"Scrafty! Just stay calm and use Dig!"

"Ty!" Scrafty shook his head, regaining focus. He wasn't out yet. By slamming his head repeatedly on the ground, the Hoodlum Pokemon had dug a hole, entering it. This would give him an advantage in terms of type-effectiveness and movement. Surely there was no way that Darmanitan could predict the movements of Dig when listening to music.

Except he can. Darmanitan had suddenly increased his movement speed. Which meant that the music he and DJ Pon-3 were listening to had sped up. Due to his increased speed, Darmanitan jumped up into the air, 3 seconds before Scrafty emerged from the ground.

"Darma!"

"Scrafty?" Scrafty, who had just emerged, looked up to see that Darmanitan had easily avoided him. And that wasn't the only thing he saw. Once Darmanitan came back down, he gave the Hoodlum Pokemon a swift chop to the head with Brick Break.

"MANITAN!" Darmanitan swung his big meaty hands down on the Dark-Fighting-Type, forcing him back into the ground where he dug himself up.

And that one Brick Break was just enough to put an end to this unexpected battle. Scrafty had fainted.

"Scra..."

"Scrafty is unable to battle! Darmanitan wins! Which means the victor is DJ Pon-3, Vinyl Scratch!"

"She won without saying a word?!" The announcer almost choked on his own water. "I wish I could do that!"

"Unbelievable...Not even Red could perform something like that...He had to say something to make his Pokemon attack." Fluttershy's jaw dropped. "Maybe it's like Zecora?"

"Nah. It's just that Vinyl and her Pokemon really love music." Ash explained. "They found their own unique way of battling. And that makes them one powerful combination."

"Pikachu!"

"No wonder she's ranked out #15 of 8120 trainers..." Sweetie Belle was starstruck along with pretty much everypony else. One pony who wasn't flabbergasted like the rest was Octavia, who was watching from the crowd.

"Well, I'll be...Good attempt Scrafty." The pony picked her partner off the ground as Scrafty held his head.

"Scrafty."

"And you were amazing! I couldn't even do anything against your Darmanitan."

Vinyl, even though she didn't say a word, went up to the pony as they both shook hooves. Darmanitan gave Scrafty a pat on the back, chuckling like crazy. "Dar-Dar-Dar-Manitan!"

With that match finally over, the next matchup could begin. This time, it involved Twilight Sparkle herself. But who she was going up against was something that threw Starlight off guard.

Trixie.

Because of course, she entered.

"Trixie?!" Starlight gasped. "Oh no..." She then began thinking of possible outcomes when Twilight and Trixie battle. This could end in either pure unfiltered violence or tears. One of the two will happen according to Starlight.

But before that could happen, a break was announced.

"That calls for a break!" said the announcer. "A 40-minute break and we'll be right back!"

"Time to snack on something then." Ash stood up along with other ponies. Some ponies had decided to stay and chat whilst others went for some food.

In the waiting room, Twilight was in the same scenario as Starlight. She was shocked about who she was facing off next. "I'm facing off against, Trixie?!"

"The one and only!" And speaking of Trixie, there she was. Sitting on a couch located on the right side of the waiting room. And as always, her Misdreavus was right beside her.

"Dreavus!"

"You're entering too?!" Twilight went up to Trixie.

"But of course I am. Why wouldn't I?" Trixie shrugged. "I'm more surprised that you're here."

"Ehehe...yeah..." Twilight squeed.

"But then again. A lot of familiar faces are here. Especially her." The Great and Powerful Trixie pointed her hoof at one pony who Twilight didn't expect to join, yet again.

It was none other than the oldest of the pie sisters, Limestone. Oh very dear.

"Isn't that...?" Twilight squinted her eyes.

"One of Pinkie Pie's sisters. That's right. She gave me a hard time back on that Rock Farm of hers. But this time, I'll be the one giving her a hard time! If I get matched up with her that is." Trixie grinned, feeling confident that she could beat Limestone. Even though she has no idea that Limestone owns a Tyranitar. So perhaps it might be for the best that she doesn't get matched up with Limestone Pie.

"This is gonna be a long week..." Twilight held her head. She then noticed that Adagio had gotten up, walking out of the waiting room along with everypony else. Twilight being the curious pony that she is had decided to follow Adagio wherever she may be headed this time.

With the Canterlot Tournament being on a break, once it returns, the battles are only going to get much more intense from here on as the skill level increases. The tournament that will decide who is the current strongest pony trainer carries on as the Canterlot Tournament continues.
