It had to happen.
Really, unless I'm forgetting something vital, this is the first real death this story has had that we all feel bad for, other than the head of Avarice.

Mister Rich.
6278134
Oopsie.
Must...not...cry...a lot !!!!!
6278127 How the hell did you forget ´bout Crush !!!!! You MONSTER !!!!
You did good on this one, IMHO.
I went through a death in my family years ago, and there was no real drama behind it...no final words or anything. He passed in his sleep and the next morning we all went into motion to say our good-byes and to get the word out. You might say this chapter struck a chord, and for that I commend you :)

I really wanted to capture a sense of family. A sense of obligation. A sense of grief but also a sense of duty that helps hold the grief at bay.
I have no idea how I did, I'm the writer, so I can't look at this objectively, but I'm hoping that I hit my mark.
6278127
Cashmere Conestoga! The little salesfilly from the Canterlot toyshop who died in the Canterlot riots.
Damn it, kudz, quit mixing freshly chopped onions in the chapter...
6278198
Based on my own experience, you hit the nail on the head.
I do not know how to feel bout this one.
And one hand it feels natural and is executed in a way that makes sense for granny smith, and the circumstances are right. For someone who is old, even a mild sickness can be dangerous. You capture that emotion well. As she died of sickness, the tragedy is lesser than if she died from some tragedy.
....... Yet on the other hand, granny smith isn't a human. A human her age would definitely be in danger of such things, but Granny isn't. She is an earth pony, a creature with great stamina and endurance even at an advanced age like her. What weaknesses a human would have, would be vastly reduced by her nature as an earth pony.
In other words it would make sense that a mild flu would just remain a mild flu to granny smith. It wouldn't be enough to sap her strength and end her life.
So i am stuck between knowing that this is written well and in perspective, yet at the same time i am questioning if it makes sense in the context of what granny smith is.
6278235
The flu didn't kill her.
Old age did. The flu was only a minor annoyance that slowed her down while she was trying to bake a few last pies before she went.
6278208
And murdered by her own brother and his friends.
Just when you think no well known character will die because the major battle is over BAM!! Surprise motherplucker sad chapter.
6278235 Don´t forget that Earth Ponies are strong and resistent, but not immortal. Crush died from a infection after surviving a stab. Sure, The Isles does not have the same level of medical care and medicine but, being an earth pony, he could have survive the infection. Only that he didin´t. It happens...just like Mr. Rich, it was his time to go, that simple.
6278255
There is still one more before the winter is out.
6278263 thought that was a pegasus.
though you have to remember that the blade had been poinsoned in some way to begin with.
6278274
Crush was an earth pony. Master of the forge for Keg Smasher's castle.
6278274 Maybe I´m wrong but, AFAIK, it wasn´t a poisoned dagger...just the infection from the stab wound. And we´re talking ´bout an earth pony that, after having his own throat cut by shadow wolves, crushed then all, walked to the forge, and seared the injury in his own throat by himself.
Probably while he was doing push ups. While hiolding iron weights. With just one hoof. As, at the same time, he was balancing his 5 balls of pure stainless steel to keep balance.
Now I´m curious. Is Rising aware of Crush´s departure ? I would like to know how he felt. Need to remember asking this to Rising in the next Q & A...
oh god! i wasnt expecting this much of a feels trip today. then again death does come at seemingly random times. Atleast she went i her bed after a day with her family.. but still this is as heart wrenching as what happened with Cashmere Conestoga..
mark the date, this will be made a ponyville holiday.
the last of the first gave her last breath this morning
6278235
Dude, don't forget that if the Ponyville founding dates are correct Granny Smith was well over 200 years old. Even on earth pony stamina, that's probably really old.
6278246 DAMN YOU, OLD AGE!! DAMN YOU TO HELL!!
...As sad as her death is, I am far more concerned about the claims that the war is over. Sure, there may be no more incursions for now, but as long as this Night Stallion is still alive, the war is still ongoing. It's merely...stalled.
6278833
The first war that involved the entirety of the known civilised world is over.
There will be a second. Now it is time to lick their wounds, figure out what they did wrong, and figure out how to a fight a vastly superiour force with what they have.
6278246
From a quick look around, it appears old age usually (often? Some sources claim always) kills someone because it weakens their body and makes it suceptible to diseases that would otherwise be defendable, or even harmless. The idea that she has the flu, and because she is too old to fight it off she dies from it is pretty believable, at least.
Ash Tanto has been busy. And he had one call in Ponyville that he really, probably didn't want to make.
6279743
He greeted a very young and smoking hot Granny Smith with a bottle of apple whiskey and a smile.
She only has a few minor things to answer for, nothing at all serious, and then she will be free to pass through the gate.
There was the fact that she busy with her husband in a vat of apple cider, got a little babybuckin' done, but everypony thought the cider was especially flavourful that year, and it put a lot of ponies into an amorous mood. Eleven months later, there was a bit of a foal boom.
6279759
Hot damn, Granny got down.
6279759
That sounds SO in character for her.
Damn you Kudzu... Oh well, it's a fictional character. No need to cry over spilt milk. Right? RIGHT?!
If AJ wasn't pissed before, she's gonna be now that her surrogate mother just died and she wasn't there for her.
Is anybody pissed at this chapter? Or is it just a given that that old bat was gonna bite the dust eventually?
I read this chapter while listening to this song.
I've never been left so depressed. This reminded me so much of how my grandfather passed... he was basically my dad... raised me like I was his son... I didn't get to tell him goodbye. Granny Smith.... she deserved a goodbye. Every hard worker does...
The CMC are somehow even better than the canon set.
almost as good as sentinel.
Scootaloo is still my favorite though.
The first fic I read that Granny Smith dies
Someone important dying.
All I can think about is the newest thing I learned today:
Sawdust -
Very absorbent + very cheap + plentiful + good smell (depending on wood) = great vomit cleaner-upper
The chase made me look up so many things now that I think about it.
Well you've done it Kudz I'm in a ball of feels over this one. I care more about this fictional character passing then my own sets passing.
I'm sorry, but am I the only one who caught that Big Mac told Apple Bloom to look after her "aunt"? Shouldn't Cheerilee Be her Sister-in-Law? Is this a typo or are you going for something more like Pina's relationship with Berry?
Oh, that's sad, im sad now. First story I've read that has actually had Granny smith die, except for 2 where ponyville exploads but that doesn't count. Yet here, alas, the last of the first have passed on, may she be remembered.
Oh and sawdust, good to now that the crap I've been trashing for years is actually useful.
6278864
So you're saying this is pony world war one?
Which makes the Mirror world ponies Nazis...
Heavy losses but victorious...
Oh my God it makes too much sense!
6772693
Uhm... The Nazi were the cause of World War 2, brought on by Hitler's nightmarish experiences in WWI.
Damn dude.
Poor Granny. She will be missed.
This is just like my American History teacher.
On Thursday he cracked a joke and started calling all of our names purposely wrong and his last words to our class was "Hope you enjoyed it cuz' it's not happening ever again" Friday he called in sick and saturday he died
The end of an age has come,
A new angel rises to paradise,
Soaring on the wings of love,
Rest well.
...Reminds me of how my Great Grandmother passed on. One night she was absolutely fine, come morning I was dressing up to go to her funeral....
I think I was somewhere between 5-10 years old when she passed...
man, you came out of left field with a serious blow to the feels with this one man!
No matter how many times I reread this story this chapter always hits the same
