I hate cliffhangers... Now we wait and destroy another f5
Poor Bartleby.. Taking one for the team
In This Chapter, people trying to mourn the death of their family/friend/family friend have to deal with things getting even more frantic.
Unless they're a foal (thank goodness).
... Every chapter lately has had a lot of different things happening, but this one seems especially like there is no rest for the mourning.
WOOOO! GO Flash! Put those fucking politicians in their place. Methinks we are going to be seeing some reform to Ponyville's Politics soon. They have the Husband of one one of the Princesses pissed at them. And by extension, the rest of the Elements, possibly Discord, and worse of all.... BUCKY! Methinks he will have another dragon to slay soon. Only this time a Political Dragon instead of a Budget Dragon.
you're soft, fluffy,
Yay, cuddles with the chicken kitty! Just what DT needs.
And the ponderous machine of beuracracy trolls on....slowly...while foals are in danger.
Little fluffy or fuzzy predators don't get respect. Little scarred and one-eyed predators get much respect.
Well, yeah, reward hormones have the same receptor as morphium.
The last stallion in Equestria sat at his table. He heard a knock on his door.

???
I got a feeling Flash's in deep doodoo.....
(I'm back!)
Why do people hate politicians? Political figures are there to represent the people. They are there to protect the people from things like this. Overzealous public servant looking to spend public money on needless programs. And instead of letting the committee do its job of determining the need of such a program the public servant is threatening the committee. It would be akin to the a lobbyist bypassing the Congress and putting a bill on the President's desk. Demanding that it be signed into law. The reason for the committee is to prevent tyranny. This exact thing that Flash is trying to do. It doesn't matter that it's for the right reasons, or done with good intentions, the path to hell is lined with good intentions.
Flash's atempt here was mishandled, had he used sweet words and stroked egos he could have rallied the council and had allies. Now he has enemies, enemies who hold the police budget. Enemies who are no longer reigned in by Filthy Rich. Enemies could just as easily turn public opinion away from the police. Flash is playing a dangerous game here.
5377517 I'm on my phone, just google "the last man sat" and the results should come up.
Also, im sure enduring sick, drugged kids wasnt in the job description.... bartleby should ask for a raise
5377540
He's thinking like a soldier though. Apply force, get results. Engage enemy.
Just like Sparkler, he's allowed to make mistakes.
5377567
yes I see the problem here, but this is going to be a costly mistake. he might have to bring his wife and fix it. he's either going to need a crash course in politics or the police force is going to need a full time representative. this little stunt will not endear into future endeavors with the council.

The way I see it, they are simply discovering all the broken stuff left behind from before Equestria got messed up and all the new broken stuff that happened since then.
The "ponies of consequence" are trying to fix broken stuff as they find it: Bucky discovered tons of accounting BS in Ponyville's finance and had the whole accounting department fired. Sparkler got nervous about the crime rate and decided to start the Ponyville police. Flash discovered the inefficient lost pony/foal process and decided to setup something better.
Getting governments and bureaucracy to change rarely happens under happy circumstances - it usually takes tragedy and public outrage or at least threats thereof.

Good. Thanks for not wasting our time. We do have some reading to do, you know.

In theory, elected officials and state employees are supposed to be there to look out for the people. When democracy was "invented," the intent was for smart people of all walks of life to come together and (hopefully) make fair decisions for society as a whole.
In practice, the process got hijacked by people specifically interested in politicking... people who majored in politics, lawyers, mayors, etc. Many get in it for personal gain (such as connections) and relative job security once they get in. You also have all the lobbyists and other influences offering their flavor of guidance so the end-result often strays away from public good. You also have all the surrounding bureaucracy that makes itself more complex all the time to justify its on-going existence.
Democracy should be a beautiful thing in theory. In practice though, the process is often hopelessly corrupted by self-serving individuals.
5377655 Yay! Rude bitches!

Er... welcome to the comments section.
Yes... the story is long. But a good read by most accounts. Really, the story is just getting started... well, in a sense. All of the major characters have been established, the various story threads have been revealed, and now things progress forward as various elements shift and move around, revealing various parts of the story and placing them into perspective view.

now imagine in a more imperialistic government one of those individuals gaining power, for every bad egg there are a few good ones. yes everyone in politics has an agenda, but not all those agendas are bad or wrong. we demonize politicians but most generally have the best interest of their people at heart. tThe only problem is most people can't agree on a single issue. and that's why it takes forever in a day for a committee to agree on anything. a lot of wheeling and dealing has to go on to convince people to agree on certain issues. and that's where corruption can sneak in but just like any government corruption is always a problem. it's just harder to corrupt a large group of people and then it is to corrupt a single individual.
5377679 Fuck that.
I'll stick to good old 50,000-70,000 word fics.
And maybe, just maybe, I'll work up the endurance to read one of the Austraeoh stories in one setting.
5377688
Ah, well then, I suppose you will no longer be gracing us with your presence. Shorter stories are nice, and certainly more manageable. Plus, you can finish a 50k novel in a single day for the sake of instant gratification, which is always pleasant.

Unless you have something constructive to add, quit wasting our fucking oxygen.
... yeah, I'm a little cranky today, what of it?
5377702 Bye.
Imma go read something else, I guess.
5377725
Well, even if you were saying this, you'd still be breathing, and typing doesn't require any more breath. Also, you could have made the choice not to reply, which you didn't. So technically, I'm not the one wasting the oxygen; you are. Besides, don't act like what you're saying is constructive. It's fucking not.
And I don't care if you're cranky; if you're an assfuck, I'm going to be an assfuck back.
If you wish to continue this mini flame war, please comment on my userpage so no one else has to endure us.

A large number of people may make it harder to get anything through by corrupting or otherwise convincing only one of them but that does not stop lobbyists from going after ALL of them and getting far more than one to agree with their position. They only need to convince enough of them to either secure a comfortable stalemate or tip odds in their favor.
Politics would be less bland if politicians were not shackled to the party line, worries about securing their continuing party membership and the next election.
5377687
The problem isn't whether or not a single person is idealistic, but that the system encourages corruption. It's been demonstrated that, in many cases, the candidates real opinions on an issue should not be shown honestly: he needs to make it seem like he has the broadest appeal, nor is it usually in his benefit to have his past mistakes dredged up. So, given that he has probably made some mistakes like every person alive and doesn't have an opinion that is exactly congruous with what the median public thinks, how does he hide his mistakes, while making it look like his opinions are the best... By having the best PR. How does he do that? By having the best PR campaign. How does he do that? By hiring the best, most expensive PR firm.
Well, even if he's independently wealthy, his opponent probably is too. How does he ensure he pulls ahead of his opposition? Well, he can accept donations. Who gives him those donations? Corporations, the wealthy, special interest groups: in short, the powerful. Well, now that he's in office... if he upsets those interests (or if his party does) then they'll back out. So... then in order for him to pull ahead, politically, he essentially must do things that are better for the wealthy than the unwealthy.
Even if he is ideologically opposed to this, he will not succeed in the long term without understanding this and playing the game, so to speak.
With how things have been going, that's somewhat ominous to end with.
one too many 'many's

Lobbyist is anot independent party with an agenda. This can be a group like GM, or an individual lIke Joe Shmoe wanting hunting rights or whatever. Flash Sentry here is a lobbyist. They are parties trying to push an agenda. Who is to judge whether that's good or bad? The committee that's who. Take away lobbying and you take away part of the people's voice.
As for partisanship, in the mass of bodies that is the Congress and Senate how does a single representative get his agenda moved? He gains allies, usually those allies have simular viewpoints. That is how the parties get things done. By aiding one another agendas get pushed through. The problem begins when too many agendas start piling up. Not all agendas are good, and not all are needed. So when the parties disagree that's when things get bogged down. It's not because one party or another is corrupt, it's because not all agendas can be aforded.
5377983
No the system prevents tyranny. That is all. No one group or individual can gain absolute power. Everything about our government was built on this principle. The bill of rights was written on the principal that anyone trying to take power can and should be taken down. By armed revolt if nessary. Does this open the doors for those with influence to push their agendas yes. But not only them. With social media more and more independent individuals can band together and push agendas, with little to no financial backing movements are started. The political world is ever changing for good or ill. But it is better than living under the thumb of a dictator.
Bucky = Lord of Winter
Bucky = Loves foals
Bucky = Hundreds of small minions/subjects
This close to Christmas, I found myself imagining Bucky in a sleigh being pulled by the Raptors, teleporting glass/griffon-made gifts into the homes of foals...
5378481
And for the bad ones he could be KRAMPUS!
5378481
5377725 You're kind of a jerk. :/
5378542
Your opinion is noted. Have a good day, sir.
5378542 If you think he's an ass, you should see Meester.
That guy makes Longhaul look like Fluttershy.

Flash is a lobbyist? As Twilight's husband, his word is nearly as good as law for as long as Equestria recognizes the princesses as the highest authority.
How many lobbyists have immediate power over life and death of lower tiers of governance? Flash came in, told Ponyville's administration what he is expecting them to do without any council meetings or delays and told them they are as good as fired if they refuse. That's effectively a royal decree: do as you are told, no ifs, no buts.
I'll leave this here for the Lord of Winter.
What's this?
5378856
To be fair, what he's asking them is an incredibly minor thing all things considered. "Put an ad in the newspaper to help spread the word that missing foals are to be reported to police officers, as there is a serial kidnapper and burglar on the loose who poses a threat to their safety and possibly their lives".
I would also say that his threat has nothing to do with his connection to Twilight - as it doesn't involve her in any way. He merely said he would personally put the ad in the paper along with a statement about the lack of helpfulness of City Hall; Something any citizen could do, and something that may cause public opinion to turn against them.
And quoth the raven "Nevermore"
5939358 my favorite dark romantic poem is "The Raven" by E.A. Poe.
6599254 Mine's probably City in the Sea, same author. I'm a big Poe fan. (also, Poe is a transcendentalist, not a romantic.)
For some reason, I keep thinking of Bartleby as being voiced by Michael Dorn, the actor who played Worf on ST:TNG
