ONLY A SITH DEALS IN ABSOLUTES!
Uh, that right there is an absolute. Somebody kill that Jedi.
why didn't they have one of the alicorns to come in and help for a short time is my question now. or maybe sk discord to drop in and help level the field. can't imagine the regal sisters not coming along for a time to ensure they have na edge. what if the wolves had a pwoer house?
4515645
Celestia and Luna were unable to visit the island due to political reasons in the past. Currently, Celestia has to keep an eye on Canterlot and Luna is still a prisoner in Ponyville, refusing to leave the captured solar guard. Cadance has an empire to run and the political instability is even affecting the Crystal Empire.
Help was sent though. Celestia knew that help was needed. She agreed to send Bucky and agreed to Keg Smasher's demands.
Right now, with the current state of war, not a whole lot can be done. These kinds of things happen.
Bad feeling Bucky is going to overplay his hand at some point.
4515724
Bucky is going to learn from his mistakes and turtle down.
He isn't always the brightest bulb in the room, but he's damn practical.
I can't help but feel that I've missed a chapter somehow. We jumped from a quiet family meeting to tapping a ley line without so much as an explanation that ley lines exist.
4515769
Mmm, perhaps that was a bit sudden, but I do have more explanations about ley lines coming when Bucky explains his plans to Dinky, Sparkler, and Rising Star.
Bees can follow leylines, eh? Makes sense to me. Flowers are probably more prevalent along such magical currents.
I think the cauterization drove Bucky less than sane. He appears to be developing into a mad arcanist, or at least a drunken one. That's not necessarily a bad thing, of course, but it does seem like a cause for concern. I just hope he knows what he's doing. Magical flashlights would be a potent weapon against the shadow wolves, but there's a lot that could go wrong in the process...
Well, Dinky the hive queen will be able to lend whatever assistance she can. Or so I hope.
In any case, looking forward to more.
4515769
On second look and some reflection, that was intentional. You were supposed to feel Derpy's confusion about what was going on. She doesn't understand ley lines either.
Sorry about that.
4515606 The Jjedi Council was just as evil as the Sith Lords, just in a different way. I always preferred the idea of the Grey Jedi and it always disappoints me to not see them used more in the games.
4515835
And you would be correct in your assumption.
I really hope that means we're not heading where I think it does. Not that there's anything wrong with it. It's just Bucky the unicorn is better than Bucky the alicorn, in my personal opinion,
Now, either Thistle needs to give up a foal... or Keg Smasher is going to have to run like fuck!
Hmm, I did at first think those sunstones were to power breweries, but now it sounds like Bucky plans on making a mine field. If he can get them to only react to the shadow wolves, which I believe he can, then that should sort the problem out. Dinky... if he sticks to following the bees, then Buck can tap into the ley lines for more power.
...I have no clue as to how Rising Star fits into this, seeing as it was just a fireball spell.
4515863
No, no Buckycorn.
From an earlier comment.
4515889 Oh, okay. Thanks.
ohhhh... I'm so excited :P but I don't want Bucky to get maimed again :( lol
4515863
That was Rising Star functioning as a type three when Bucky channeled magic through him temporarily.
We saw his raw potential, and his special spell ability for the first time.
4515906
He acknowledges that his flesh is too soft. He's aware of the problem.
Hm... I'm not really digging the chapter. He's becoming less Bucky and more of a typical badass-styled Mary Sue, even with the garuantee of no ascension. He's not the stallion we first read, while is good... but I don't care how much they deny it, he's NO LONGER the Buckminster that Derps and Berry fell for.
4515944
Meh, shows what you know.
He's changed, sure, but he is reacting to a bad environment and the need to protect foals. He's becoming what he always was deep inside A guardian. We saw the first glimpse of what he could be when the want it need it spell happened.
Garu Stu? Not so much. He is going to acknowledge his own vulnerabilities and address them in a logical fashion.
thanks for the update
4515962 then he's becoming less of a concrete, interesting character and more of an object for story convenience.
4516028
Nope. I disagree.
Hero's Quest. Literary construct.
Scroll down, read a few comments, look for big text reading ENGLISH SCHOLAR MODE!
He must endure a growth period.
4516035 It just seems that, wolves aside, everything is coming to him too easily, too positively, at least to my view.
4516114
And what has come to him exactly thus far? Do tell. Ideas and faint notions, little else.
4516119 in the Shetland Isles arc? New squire that's automatically complacent with his commands. New level of power and cosmic awareness, judging by this chapter's content.
Overall story/previous arc? The love of two mares based on a chase and him buying a gift. There's much more to it than that, though, so that does not count. XD
Hm... You know what, it's just in the Shetland Isles arc. I can't seem to get as invested, as shown by my lack of comments on chapters.
4515889
Since it's clearly not going to happen anyway, I don't see any harm in asking - if Bucky were to ascend, would it rebuild his badly damaged body?
4516457
Well, Twilight Sparkle burned to death and left behind a pile of ashes, so I'd say yes.
4516468
But did she actually burn to death or was that just explosive teleportation with a conveniently shaped scorch mark on the floor?
Hmm... I wonder what it would be like to see into forever... 0-0. Anyways, I'm guessing that maybe Bucky becomes an alicorn by the end of this? :3
Bucky is seriously considering "replacing" his own horn? Oh lordy, now I am going to be worried sick for the herd.
Bucky's crazy streak has stretched so much since the beginning of this wonderful tale that I am afraid it might eventually make him snap.
4515664
I would send Spike. Shining is in Ponyville right now, and is able to keep Twilight grounded (along with her parents). Given Bucky's instability, I'd want to keep in close contact with the Isles right now.
The tone of this story has really changed too much between the arcs and is no longer the same genre as it started.
Originally, it was a romance/humour/slice of life detailing relationships between different tribes and cultures. Now, it is a dark/adventure/alternate universe detailing fights against ancient injustices.
Now there's nothing wrong with this sort of story, it's well written, and many people like it. I personally prefer the original romance/humour though, and the change grates. I would strongly suggest that this story would be improved by simply splitting it into two separate stories, probably around the 'Berry's Punch' incident where the tone of it all changed to more violent. This would allow you to change the tags on the second part and keep the first part the same.
Since I don't like dark or violent stories I'm dropping this one now (if I want to see violence and death I just turn on the 6 o'clock news) but I'm sure many people (who like the dark genre) will enjoy it. I would not tell you to change your ideas, but it's just no longer for me. However if you want some friendly constructive advice on structure - split it into two distinct parts. It will prevent people from feeling like they've been hit by a bait-and-switch.
4516739
Take a look at comment #13 in this chapter.
4516797
Partially agree. We certainly seemed to have moved into dark territory. The tags apply to the entire story, so I would keep Romance and Humour, but we definitely need Dark added. Finally, I'd swap out Random for Adventure.
i am proud of you Bucky! there are few that would dare walk onto the path of power, even fewer that would bring their foals along for the line.
but lets see if i can give thought about this whole "type jumping" or whatever you are gonna call it
the general idea is that all magic comes natural to a unicorn. the amount that a unicorn can channel is up to the genetic material of the unicorn or possible the biological buildup of their horn. what Buckmeister is theorizing is that a unicorn is not born to their full potential muck like a brain is not born with all the synapses it will have in adult-hood or some shit, bare with me. problem is, a muscle is easy to train since you simply need to exhaust it for the body to direct effort into making the muscle able to work harder while the horn was made for channeling magic. no friction, no true exhaustion and strain that the body can dedicate effort to improving.
unless you go through EXTREME exhaustion and great damage to the horn like Buckmeister did. dravback on that is that the horn becomes permanently damaged and you are inches, no, millimeters away from death.
a better way is needed.
and this with the lay lines might just be it. now, a new metaphor, imagine the horn as a pipe. a naturally, a little clogged pipe. works perfectly well but not as well as it could. now, imagine magic as the water. what happened to Buckmeister was that he was forced to pump to muck water over to muck time. the pipe cannot handle the pressure and bursts. you fix the old pipe, and all that clogging is gone but as we all know, fixing pipes is something that you shouldn't try yourself, get a professional, otherwise you will end up with a pipe that starts to leak when the water pressure rises. so, the question is: how do we clear the clogging, whitout having the pipe bursting.
and now, we just might have the answer.
the ley lines.
(anyone who doesn't know what ley lines can either check out this link here if they want the wiki version, here for a shorter version or can just read this TL;DR version: lines of force that surounds a planet like a grid. thought to be connected to landscapes and sacred places. PLEASE REMEMBER THAT THIS IS A FICTIONAL CONCEPT)
if you can connect your "pipe" directly into a ley line, the most pure of all magics, then you should, in theory, be able to "flush" the pipe clean with the pure, high pressure "water". question is, is this possible? and if so, how dangerous would it be to do?
and lastly: Bucky, who already has "jumped" up a level must find a new focus since his old pipe will not survive repeat usage for high pressure magics.
I AM EXCITED! and a bit drunk... if no one could tell... shut up.
wow... i wrote more than i though... should i?
*drink* OF COURSE!!!
Interesting.
I don't have much sympathy for Derpy on this: If she wants to know what's happening, that's fine, and I don't expect Bucky to hold back, but I think it's getting a bit hypocritical if Derpy wants full disclosure from Bucky, but she's unwilling to explain what happened between her and Thistle.
4516839
Buckmeister, the master of bucking! HAHAHAHAHAHA
Seriously, though. I wouldn't call Bucky's pre-damage horn a clogged pipe, I'd just call it a smaller-diameter pipe. Maybe there is some elasticity there (so that you can send some more through without causing damage), but I think Bucky went way beyond that. The question is, will he be able to keep Sparkler and Rising Star from going through the same pain that he went through?
4515889 I don't wanna crap my pants tho...
So, we have potential sunstones, a unicorn who can create "shooting stars", and a tower to be constructed. I think it was already mentioned that the Island has glass, so I assume that the island has sand, which can be made into glass. The wolves recognized that Bucky was the biggest threat, and they must assume that he's still alive, holed up in the castle.
Time to go under the spoiler bars.
I'm going to guess that the tower Bucky is interested in is going to become the Tower of Shadow-Death™.
Here's an interesting piece of trivia: If you've ever been near railroad tracks, you have probably seen railroad signal lights, either arranged in a circle or arranged vertically. Did you know, those lights typically use 35-watt light bulbs? The newest ones use high-intensity LEDs, but the majority of signal lights in the US are still using 35-watt DC light bulbs, and yet you can see the light from over ½ a mile away? Theatre spotlights are much brighter (500+ watts), but they can look as bright as a sun if you look directly at them. It's all in the lens.
We know that the gems Sparkler created are going to become sunstones. If Bucky can have access to clean sand, he can give power to Rising Star, who can fire that sand into clean, properly-shaped glass. If the wolves can be lured close to the tower, then just turn on the light so that the wolves get stuck between the tower and the light. Slowly move the light towards the base of the tower. You won't be able to get the light pointing straight down, so you'll have to use fire, or the extra sunstones, to finish them off. The unicorns would all be at the top of the tower, in (hopefully) the safe zone. It would be brutal, and horrific, and I expect Piña's going to throw up when she hears the sounds of howling turn into screams of Shadow-Pain™.
Or, Bucky could just take all the sunstones, stack them up in front of the cave (preferably with some reflectors behind them), and turn them on. Do the Earth Pony thing, and throw numbers at the problem. Again, horrific.
4516859 but that is just what the lay line thing would do. only to a less extreme extent.
let the magic of the bloody planet flow through you and slowly but stedily allow more and more to go through you until you have reached the point where you can't take any more.
like anal really
4515889 I HAVE NOT BEEN THIS EXCITED SINCE I HEARD THAT THEY ARE MAKING THE INCREDIBLES 2 AND A WRECK-IT RALPH 2 ON THE SAME DAY!!!
IMMA FUCKING DIE!!!!!
4515944
He's undergoing the same level of change as he did for the first arc. Think about it this way, at the very beginning, he wouldn't even masturbate. By the end of the first arc, he's married and has rutted both of his wives. That took a lot of change. Change that you're not complaining about because it happened naturally.
Is the development in this chapter a little forced? Only because Bucky is being forced. Think about it, as much as the first arc put him through stuff, it was mere embarrassment. Nothing seriously life-threatening. Bucky has just come back from being inches away from dying. Go ask a veteran, that changes a person.
The only thing it missed was "then there WAS his assistants" => "Then there WERE his assistants"
OMSqueeEEEeeeeee this is gonna be SO AWESOME!
4517098
Grammarly is reporting was is the correct word here and flags where.
Your unicorns terrify me, have I mentioned that?
They're a mixture of psykers and wizards, needing Jedi-level discipline, and battle between the needs of spiritual enlightenment, mental stimulation, and physical contentment.
And Bucky is planning to pull some seriously morally-questionable shit.
I love it.
4517036
Death has a way of changing a person. I've been dead a few times. Very liberating.
4516789
You think Spike is mentally prepared for something like this?
Do you think Derpy would let him leave the castle alone?
Bucky's starting to scare me. Either he's going to push himself too hard, or he's going to start to drift a little too close to the dark side...
4517785
Grey!
4517790
Yeah that's what they all say, before they're dressing like a death metal band and muttering about crystals every five seconds...
Seriously though, hope the rest of the family can help keep him grounded.
