Yes. Scorch is the embodiment of fire. He was one of the first beings created, and he will be one of the last beings to die when universe collapses.
5475820
+1
PiƱa The Bearded
I am very hungry while sitting in the doctor's office and waiting....always the waiting...stupid doctors.
At least I have The Chase to keep me company.
5475816
Heat death of the universe, Scorch taking his last breath. Hoho! I see what you did there.
You have no idea how heart-warming this was for me, especially with this mug of hot chocolate here to go along with i t.
It is dark, and a Typo may eat you.
Soooo PiƱa plays into celestia hands(hoofs?) >āYes PiƱa, my new vessel of knowledge. I am going to return you,ā Celestia answered
Manipulestia is at it again
5475869
- That seems grossly unfair... I have my own foal... I would be very upset if somepony took her. Plus, you don't mess with Bucky's foals. If you find one, return it immediately. You all saw what Bucky did when somepony hurt his apprentice.
5475879 Crypticlestia then, damn you and your logical approach
5475837
Don't let Twilight hear you saying that.
5475869
Pina was possessed by a spirit of knowledge and truth. She -is- a vessel of knowledge.
Twilight is gonna be so jealous of Pina
:Pina has a Spirit of Knowledge inside of her? But... But I want one inside of me
*Goes to the Castle*
:Alrightt Castle. Since you are so fond of giving out Spirits, GIVE ME ONE OR ELSE YOU WILL BE REDUCED TO RUBBLE... AGAIN!
Sombra: I am a spirit and am Knowledga- OWW! Stop Hitting me I was just Joking.
Princess Platinum:*Beating Sombra with a rolled up newspaper she somehow got*
should be "I do"
"historically protected sight. "
While it's likely quite the sight, it's really truly a site.
5475964
Twilight is to divination as Bucky is to enchantment.
Twilight IS a spirit of knowledge already.
*Spirit merges with you filly sister: +16 Charisma*
*Ripple doesn't understand what's happening: +5 annoyance, +5 acceptance, +18 hugs!*
Someone needs to make character sheets for these ponies. Please, I just... I want this, I need this. You get where this is going.... rape.
Alicorn Dinky and Pina cometh?
... The conversation between Scorch and Rising Star and the griffons is...
I understand where it's coming from: If you're not a god or chosen to be a king you can't be trusted with your lives, and you should let those that are chosen as your betters guide you. It's effective. It's pragmatic. It's essentially the same thing as feudalism.
Then why is the whole implication just so goddamn uncomfortable. Like they're stealing the lives of those that are inferior, and that's what the conversants are saying about everyone who's not a king or a god: they are pointless and cannot be trusted to even fight for their own prosperity because they'll f*ck it up. It's like everyone who's not a god or a king is a pet, who can never understand the world really and should not be allowed what is essentially freedom: the power to affect their own lives, even the power to screw up their own lives by striving for a better life for themselves.
5476020
No, that's not it at all.
A little spoiler...
It was Scorch that gave magic to the griffons. Magic which can be far more powerful than a gun.
Magic takes discipline and control to use. Time to master. It is a craft, like learning swordplay. It is best done by those most responsible.
Guns allow for any asshole to become a monster. Which is why Scorch hates them.
Do you remember Scorch's speech about guns and artists?
Is Celestia planning on making another minor Alicorn, by chance?
5476146
No.
5476035 just to play the devil's advocate. what would scorch think of a master of the gun? one who has prctise the mantle movement so many times they would be able to do it in their sleep, one that had fiered hundreds, thousands, tens of thousands of shots to hone their aim to perfection. one who sought to become one with the gun in the same way one becomes one with a bow, sword or shield. would he hate them? would he hate the artist for it's instrument of choice?
im just being difficult but i got curious.
5476174
He would appreciate them for their art... but still hate the the weapon.
A gun just makes it too easy to kill... makes it too easy for anybody to become a murderous monster.
Now a gun that used magical projectiles that had strict controls in place to prevent abuse and was in the hands of someone that could be trusted... Scorch could get behind that.
Jesus fuck, Bucky's just gonna burn that fucking forest down one of these days. Every time he lets one of his kids go wandering, they end up possessed or something.
5475816
I take it there are embodiments of wind, earth and water, too?
5476245
Yes.
............... i was thinking that celestia and luna also had spirits. and ultimately spirits were what made alicorns so powerful......
5476271
Celestia and Luna are filled with the dead, if you recall the alicorn defilement.
They carry with them the rage of their entire race.
5476248 Are we going to meet them?
5476283
Maybe...
5476275 ....... as in elemental spirits. spirits of night and day. spirits of friendship. spirits of love. ethereal entities that take up some kind of aspect.
So now PiƱa has a spirit of knowledge dwelling in her. Knowledge and Cleverness and they're working together!
5476165
If PiƱa is a spirit of knowledge, who is the spirit of wisdom to temper her?
5476275
And that's one of the things that would make Bucky dangerous to them, isn't it? That rage would only make him stronger.
5476625
You just can't wait for more info, can you?
5476652
Yes. And you are quite clever to notice.
5477144
Nope!
5477153
Clever? I always thought of myself as more of a pegasus.
So... could one compare Bucky to The Hulk? In the sense of the more you hate him, the stronger he gets?
~ TOOWC
5477539
I'm pretty sure Bucky has already shown us instances of "Bucky SMASH!"
5477560
Well, I don't so much mean a direct comparison as mush as I do a comparison of power. Y'see, some diehard Marvel fans(including myself) know that at one point, the Hulk took down Mephisto, Marvel's equivalent of Satan. Another time, he went toe-to-toe with The Sentry, a being with- and I quote verbatim-The power equal to a million exploding suns.
What I'm asking, is that Bucky were to go up against a seemingly-immortal foe, whose hate for him kept getting stronger, would he be able to defeat them, with said enemy acting as a conduit for his power?
Maybe this is better suited for a Q&A, but if it is I'll just copy/paste it over.
5477586
With a few notable exceptions, it is possible. Knowledge of inherent weakness and feeding off of hate being what it is.
5477596
Notable exceptions? Lemme guess: spoilers?
5477612
The Night Stallion. Bucky has no means to defeat him.
Enemies that have no hate to speak of.
5476185 a gun that could only fire live rounds at a hostile target. Bucky, your griffin wife was to talented for you to not make this a reality.
5477806
I wuv this story
5475816
who says he can't jump to other universes? (Just a thought)
Oooh! A long story! I just adore them!
....
What do you mean I shouldn't read it?
.....
Nah it can't be THAT long...... Holy ****.
......
SHUT UP! I have to read this now... All 1,133,221 words of it. Let's begin.
EARLY DISCLAIMER: Yes, Rage Reviews brought me here. No, you probably won't like this comment either...
Acting pretentious in front of your audience doesn't make your writing style any less pretentious. This is not an "endurance test" in any worthy sense. You are not pioneering any sort of "social commentary" in MLP:FiM. There are no characters, just soapboxes for walls of text that tell us about a world that's wholly impossible to immerse myself in. It's the lengthy and philosophy-happy panels from Calvin & Hobbes, minus the childlike atmosphere to offset it and give proper depth.
The sad thing is that the events themselves are good, and at times the narration shows glimpses of being immersive and emotional. But every time I feel like I can finally absorb what the characters are going through, not to mention the message these scenes are trying to deliver, you go ahead and bury me under walls of text as though I were an idiot who needs everything explained to me.
A kid cries because her friend is being told off, and she can't do anything about it, not without maybe getting in trouble herself. A guy who presents himself as a rich asshole actually just has a great distaste for laziness and unprofessional work, an emotion inspired by his own ancestors, but that doesn't stop him from being an asshole, and everypony hates him for that. All of these are perfectly natural scenarios. So why the hell do I need the lectures about "herd mentality" and "pony racism" and other nonsense? Even if it's supposed to emphasize the whole "tension between cultures" concept, it's delivered in such a blatant manner that it's insulting to my intelligence.
Due to my lack of free time, I did the unthinkable and skipped way ahead in order to see where things were going, just in case the story and the writing style shifted to something more appealing at that point. Ignoring the issues from lack of context, both still came across as sub par (in fact, it was marginally worse at times), and if that's the case after two hundred chapters, I find no reason to be curious about the rest. A fucking "bomb that causes rape" (and Bon Bon being okay with that)? Seriously?
And no, the constant warnings about "it's about to get 4deep8u" and whatnot is not helping. Claims don't add depth, and claiming "lack of endurance" as the reason for why most people quit is an unwarranted insult to them, nothing more. I used to think of Project Horizons as the one that stretches itself out for way too long, but even then the content is at least worthwhile and only loses its appeal because the plot overall is constantly bogged down. Here, I'm just bored, and this is coming from someone who faved a story where literally nothing extraordinary happens (on purpose, but still...)
The content that you claim has pissed off a lot of people here doesn't particularly bother me either. The issues being dissected are more or less valid and worth discussing, even if slightly out of place. My problem is the delivery itself. You could have done what you tried to do here way better with just a small fraction of the current word count, and most of this is thanks to the aforementioned walls of text.
However, I do praise you for your own commitment and "endurance", so to speak. +1M words don't just write themselves, and apparently people weren't unanimously turned away by the content. For all my complaints, there is a general feel that this story is one written as part of a coherent aim by the author. The problem is that, at the heart of it all, the "aim" happens to be "I wanted to write a +1M word long fanfic." Your words, not mine...
That is all.
- DA
PS: As far as "messing with your readers" goes, Biblical Monsters (and probably a billion other fics) did it better and in less words. This is just "smothering with tl;dr", and it might have worked if the ego-flinging didn't come along with it.
EDIT: I just finished reading the stuff on Rage Reviews that goes all the way beyond chapter 30 (I myself stopped after chapter 5 or so). Even if I ignore the reviews themselves, the quotes there are more than enough. I honestly can't decide whether this story is genius or the worst thing ever. Perhaps the former, since it is able to find all kinds of intricate ways to rub people the wrong way (for no reason, I might add), or the latter for being an incoherent and self-indulgent mess.
I'll go with the former, out of respect for someone who stands up for their work and keeps their readers on their toes. Well played, dear author. Well played.
Story is still dumb though...
