only 7. i know a cat'o nine tails can kill but come on. if anything ten.
Ok a whip I could understand, but that thing is not one I would consider as acceptable. That thing is purely a weapon and not a punishment tool.
I for one am glad to live in a society where corporal punishment is no longer used. It harms the punisher as much as the punishee.

Public scourging was common in the medieval era. Lots of people were flogged by the cat o' nine tails. And lived. Many people endured multiple floggings throughout their lives.
It is a horrible thing to be sure, but it kept people in line.
I didn't enjoy writing that at all. Thankfully the next chapter is a breather full of family fluff.
4566918 i think the amount of damage done was a little much from only seven hits as the legal limit for use in jewish law of a cat-o-nine-tails was 39 hits so as not to kill the victim. this along with the thicker skin of a pony/horse while very painful would not cause this much damage.
Justice. Sweet, sweet justice.
Holy shit. That was graphic, and I more than knew what to expect. Damn... even if that Pegasus survives, which is doubtful on the Isle, he's never going to be the same. He'll be less than a pony, at least in his own perception. I also understand Bucky's desire to never do this again. It's a terrible thing to cause pain to someone. To know that you are the reason they are never going to be the same. That said, I see worse coming. In fact... I leave this song saying what I see as a possibility:
4567002 i know but i'm really only making the same point they are in the story. it is not ok to hit a child, yours (unless it's simply a little disciplinary slap) or any other's
when he says 'let us be away from this horrible place' does he mean they're leaving the islands?
I have a feeling a good portion of those lashes landed upon the wing, the fellow may never fly again with how the wing was described.

In that same chapter we see Derpy slapping the crap out of Sparkler and then she immediately comforted Sparkler the moment after. It was meant to contrast strongly with what came next.
One was done out of love, the other was done out of malice.
It echoes the lesson with Cheerilee in the beginning.
4567035
No, just the courtyard. They're going off to recover. Together.
4567039 yeah. all i know is, as annoying kids can be i could never feel actual malice for them, sure i might get a little angry or annoyed, but i'm emotionally incapable of feeling pure malice
Another great chapter. Can't wait to see what you do next.
My only complaint is that the chapter ended too early. Is the offending Pegasus dead or near-death? Is he going to be left to die on the platform?
It made me think of a TV show where it cuts to commercial at the wrong moment.
Very profound chapter, this will weigh heavily on Bucky and his herd
I Would do the following (if possible)
1. Remove Testes from subject and make him eat them ( no seasoning).
2. Make him understand his victims pain.
3. Put a geas on him that will repeat step 2 if he ever harms a female in anything but self-defence ever again.
I think that sounds fair...
But I guess a public example might be needed in this case.
4566918
I think it was more to make a point than anything else. Bucky and Sparkler took care of things, so this was to make the public aware that there would be consequences.
4567333 true. my point still stands.
4567333
This. Exactly. Keg Smasher is very blunt in his communications. He sent a clear message, one that will be remembered.
Wow.... Just wow.
There's really not much to say here. Bucky and Loch Skimmer have the argument that might have erupted in the comments (and very well may have; no way I'm reading the ones for this chapter.) Bucky's reaction to harming another pony is certainly encouraging. In that area, light wins out over darkness, and I am very relieved that it does.
Also, I know she's experienced more trauma in the last month or so than ever before in her young life, but Piña seems to be wetting herself with distressing frequency. You may be overplaying that card, or I'm just rather sensitive to it.
In any case, looking forward to more.

Pina is a very fragile little foal. The isles have been awful on her psyche.
She's never going to be the same once she gets home. She'll be stronger in some ways, but she will always have scars.
I wouldnt have said never hurt a pony, should of said never be forced
4567606 Are we gonna see more details on those scars ? I mean, i would like to see more details on the effects of the isles either in PIna and Dinky. The effects uppon Sparkler and Rising Star, so far, are very interesting (and disturbing).
Again, and always, thanks for the update.
4567811
Of course we will.
In time, as Pina grows, we will see more of what the isles did to her. Both good and bad.
I actually cringed when I imagined this happening.
This was the second time that this had actually happened in any the stories I've ever read, the first was from The scent: Darker path's.
Good work on making this story a bit darker again.
Dont know why i come back here and read this. I feel weird
Something i noticed was that at the beginning of this arc it was stated that a foal was treated as an adult the moment
they are able to bear foals of their own but here Loch was referenced as a foal. Did i miss something ?
Well, I think I've about got it figured out.
Where Sombra became the sword, Bucky is choosing to become the shield.
4568043
Nods.
Wow. That was painful to read. Are they really leaving? What about the plan and the wolves?
4568052
They are leaving the courtyard, not the isle.
4568043
... interesting idea. This story always gives me a lot to ponder.
4567342
The only reason 10 makes more sense is because people like round numbers. There isn't a real reason to make it 10.

Don’t think I won't do it!”
Fuck yeah, justice. I also happen to agree with Keg Smasher - Bucky failed to protect his family, and should be punished as well.
You know, part of me wonders if this is just one big experiment to suck people in and then do progressively more horrific things in an attempt to drive them off.
I mean, I'm going to keep reading, but god damn. First the cauterizing, now this...
And for anyone saying more lashes should be applied... the fuck is wrong with you? There's a reason that first world countries banned it in the 1800s... and the people even in the 1800s were fucked up.
4568857
Technically, Bucky was punished.
4567873
Cultural relevance. Who is doing the talking? Whose perceptions are used. To an islander, she is an adult. To a mainlander, what would she be?
4568056
Silly me.
Sorry for wasting your time.
They're finally leaving this wretched hell? This is like me leaving school for summer break, I have a video and everything! xD
This was a fun read.
Thanks for the story!
I feel as if Bucky and his wives are the classic example of a certain thing; the one where you stand with an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other.
Derpy, the angel; and Berry the devil. I feel that this doesn't even come close to accurately explaining the story, but it gives me some sort of closure, I suppose.
4568043
And I wholeheartedly agree with this guy.
On the whole, I feel this will be a story that will live on, whether in infamy or stardom, to be determined.
Don't disappoint us, love.

"For the crime of permanently scarring a beautiful such a beautiful face"
Missing comma.
You already said everything that needs to be said. Chilling chapter. Cold, cruel justice. A dark chapter with the hopes of showing a silver lining.
I want to know who watched.
Okay, time for my first proper comment. For starters, I think here was a deeper meaning behind Keg's making Bucky administer the punishment. I think he was afraid of any backlash that may happen and if that happens then they will go after Bucky for not fighting harder to not give punishment. Next:
I honestly don't think he would for the reasons given above and because he made Bucky do it.
That is my take on it. Maybe I am thinking too hard about this, or maybe I am on the right track. It has been an interesting ride up to this point and never do I regret not listening to your warnings if staying back at chapter one and having a nice happy ending and again at chapter five or so.
The cat'o nine tails? Oh god...oh god. That is agonizing. *cringes a damn lot
Awesome work dude... cruel harsh punishment.
Cat o nine tails, painful as fuck, but that lout deserved it.
4568043 Interesting, very interesting... I agree with this guy, legit.
4567039
Malice?
The fact that Loch Skimmer and Ripple wanted to go back and tell their family alone says their fathers reaction was unexpected, therefore highly unusual.
The malnourished family was barely getting by before; they are losing two workers and gaining nothing in return. If the father had spent his life working for the good of his family as a whole; I could imagine him being angry that his daughters were acting 'selfish' and scared of how he could take care of everyone else if he let them leave.
I can imagine an accident taking place in this situation. Especially for the physically communitive pegasi. Especially if Loch Skimmer was yelling at him or pushed or swatted him first. Was this malice or an accident? What else happened that night aside from one strike that broke a leg? Why has no one has asked the father for his side of the story?
