Twilight Sparkle is being sent to Ponyville to learn about friendship. She's not happy about it.
Letters From A Disgruntled Friendship Student
by milesprower06
Filli Vanilli
Dear Fluttershy,
Look, sorry about today. I guess I just figured that if you heard it straight from the horses mouth, that you'd get over your stage fright. I wasn't trying to be mean or anything, sheesh.
Sincerely,
Pinkie Pie
Dear Pinkie Pie,
Are you kidding me? I mean, I know you may not be the brightest of ponies because of the drugs and everything, but I have the word 'shy' right in my fucking name. You saw how timid I was before the Hearth's Warming Eve performance, and yet you trigger me not once, but twice? I don't like singing in crowds. Deal with it, you junkie.
Sincerely,
Fluttershy
Dear Fluttershy,
So, what you're trying to say is that the animal shelter volunteer I met in the alternate world wasn't another version of you? You know, the one who had no trouble singing and dancing in a high school cafeteria full of judgmental teens? Not you then?
Sincerely,
Twilight
Dear Twilight,
Keep it up.
Spike will be a decorative toaster cozy before you know it.
Sincerely,
Fluttershy
Dear Big Mac,
What's the matter, brother? Can't sing because you're a little horse?
Sincerely,
Applejack
Dear Applejack,
Little, huh?
That's not what you were saying last night.
Sincerely,
Big Macintosh

Hey, hey, hey! Stay outta my shed!
MROWR! HISS!
If that hack writer for the episode had come out and said this, I'd have no trouble with how Pinkie Pie has lost her fucking shit this season. But, well, not even Pinkie Pride can save her now. Jesus, let's take a character and strip away everything that made her good and leave everything that made her the most annoying shit ever in the history of everything.
Fuckbag hacks ... sorry, had to vent a bit and since that's what this entire fic is about, why not add to it?
3953119 Sizeplay. A fetish of being very very big. Or micro - being very very small.
And then Fluttershy dropped the F-bomb.
All is well in the MLP fandom.
3953174
Oops, my bad.
Dear Twilight,
We'd like to pretend that didn't happen. Especially since the nine of us (your brother included) spent those two days thinking up excuses not to destroy the mirror on our side while you were gone.
Also, the Crystal Empire's Royal Guard has asked me to tell you to stop sending them letters. One of our pegasi is this close to filing a restraining order.
Your sister-in-law,
Cadance
Dear Fluttershy,
If it will get me away from this evil bitch, go right ahead,
-Spike
Why do people harp on Pinkie for this episode when Flutterbutter literally learned the same lesson for the fifth time?
I, actually, really don't like horses, (or calling a pony for a horse) but that line was actually really funny!
~ChocoLatte
3953412 A lot of people see this as a lesson that Fluttershy already learned simply because it has to do with her overcoming her own fears, which has been done plenty already. The main difference in this episode that some of us can relate to is the reason that she was overcoming those fears. In previous episodes it was all about overcoming your fears for the sake of your friends. Here, her own fear was holding her back from doing something that she loved, and can be applied to many more situations on a day to day basis as opposed to overcoming your fears to help others.
That being said, I might be just a little biased since I love episodes that show continuity (Flutterguy FTW!).
Holy shit, my sides genuinely hurt now.
I lost it at Mac's part Seems like they call him big for a reason
3953099 You are right that an apology like that should've been in the episode. It will take a lot for Amy to make up for that. I mean seriously, how OOC can you get?
I guess teenage human Fluttershy was either more susceptible to peer pressure, didn't have her anxieties as deeply ingrained, or was on medication. Or some combination thereof.
3953099 I agree I don't know why the writers are doing this. Pinkie Pie isn't stupid she can just be over the top. If Pinkie Pie still acts stupid I'm gonna have to go Shed Mov up in this bitch
You know, Pinkie Pie did the pinkie clone bounce near the beginning of the episode. It wouldn't surprise me if that were a pinkie clone.
Kinda curious as to why no pony mentioned of all the lying going on. We had Big Mac lying to his sister, Rarity to all of their friends, the pony tones to all of the ponies they sang to.
I mean, we had Cheerilee either fake or real swooning over Flutterguy's voice. I wonder what a letter from her would be.
Love these, but one thing that struck me as funny and that no one seems to comment on is that Rarity is in a barbershop quartet. Once again, a barbershop quartet. One of the most redneck things ever, even more so then country music for goodness sakes and no one is commenting how the trend setter, the fashionista is singing in one?
3953875 Your guess is as good as mine. But I think the problem lies in the fact that M. A. Larson, the man who understood how Pinkie Pie works, left before he could pass on his knowledge. I really wish we could lure him back as a writing coach for Pinkie Pie episodes. Cindy Morrow should have the same role for Applejack episodes.

Barbershop quartets aren't done by rednecks, they're done by boring people
Loved the last two entries. Worth the wait.
3953955
what.
She's always done that. It's not a Pinkie Clone thing, it's a Pinkie thing.
Dear Fluttershy:
Do you honestly think I care If Fax machine gets turned into a cozy? I mean, a fucking cozy would be less useless than him now!
With love(?), Princess Twilight Sparkle
Dear Pinkie Pie:
Hey, do you want some more jerkass-weed?
Your favorite drug dealer, Princess Celestia.
P.S.: Don't act like you don't want it. I know how much you love smoking this shit
Dear Big Mac:
Don't make me tie you up and sell you as a sex toy to Twilight.
Your horny sister, Applejack

There is a difference between her standard pronk and the clone bounce. It is a difference in look and how the legs are. You do not see that look anywhere else but the recent episode and 3/3.
This is one of the best chapters! And that's saying something!

>Dragonshy
I need to stand up for myself with my friends
>Green isn't your color
I need to stand up for myself against my friend (Rarity.) Incidentally this episode also had her on stage and in front of many crowds and she just dealt with it.
>Putting your hoof down
I need to stand up for myself against everyone.
>Hurricane Fluttershy
I need to stand up for myself against myself to help everyone. Also, another episode dealing with ponies watching her.
>Keep Calm and Flutter On
I need to stand up for myself against my friend (Discord.)
The only Fluttershy episode that doesn't follow the routine of, "Trot out yellow horse. Fears! Stand up for self." is Stare Master. It's tired writing and it needs to stop.
3953858
Or maybe that was a non-diegetic song, like 'Find A Pet' or 'At The Gala'? (I haven't seen EQG, so I don't know if it was or not.)
3955255
They turned on a boom box to start the music. That's about as diegetic as it gets.
3955271
Welp, never mind then.
3955161
The first problem with people saying that Fluttershy keeps learning the same lesson is that they often fail to see the subtle distinctions between the lessons of each Fluttershy episode. You yourself are missing most of those differences. Let's recap:
Dragonshy: Fluttershy herself doesn't actually learn anything in this episode. The friendship letter, written by Twilight, said to never lose faith in one's friends.
Green Isn't Your Color: You seemed to miss the part where she tentatively walks down the catwalk and flinches at every single camera flash. And the lesson in this episode, which she and Rarity learned together, was not to be worried about sharing one's feelings with a friend. Remember that neither one wanted to address their grivances about Fluttershy being a model if it meant disappointing their friend, and they both kept quiet to make the other one happy.
Putting Your Hoof Down: The lesson here wasn't just about standing up for yourself. It was about learning how to assert oneself without resorting to Trixie-esque levels of malicious bitchiness. If you didn't get that, then you clearly missed the last fifteen minutes of a twenty-two minute episode.
Hurricane Fluttershy: The lesson here was not about standing up to one's friends, but about not being afraid to put one's best foot forward, even if you don't think trying your best will make a difference. Fluttershy was dealing with a paralyzing fear of failure and ridicule moreso than a fear of other's watching her.
Keep Calm and Flutter On: I'm tempted to say that Fluttershy didn't learn anything in this episode either. If anything, I think she taught Discord a lesson here by showing him what having a friend is like.
And last but not least, Filli Vanilli: Admittedly, this one seems way too much like Hurricane Fluttershy. But rather than learning to put her best hoof forward, she dealt directly with stage fright as it prevented her from doing something she loved.
Perhaps the Fluttershy episodes do deal with her fears and shyness too excessively. But you have to understand that shyness is both a major character flaw and often a deeply ingrained personality trait. It's one of those personality traits that a person in real life would have to overcome after many years, not after one or two Aesops. In fact, the thing that makes Filli Vanilli fantastic as a Fluttershy episode is that she actually admits that she's not ready to sing in front of a large audience, and that she'll work through it in baby steps. Fluttershy's timid nature and how she deals with it makes her one of the most relatable of the Mane 6, and in a show that's praised for its good writing, relatable characters and character growth, that's a good thing.
3955161
These are different forms of fear, different situations, and each one addresses a different objection.
>Dragonshy
I CAN make a difference, and face a creature I fear.
>Green isn't your color
I CAN say no, and being open to my friends about my fears is not a bad thing. They will understand.
>Putting your hoof down
There is such a thing as being too aggressive, even for a shy pony.
>Hurricane Fluttershy
Even when I am part of a big crowd, my actions matter. I can help out, and won't be judged for how little or much I can contribute.
>Keep Calm and Flutter On
My friendship matters, it is valued, being patient and tolerant can pay off.
>Filli Vanilli
Sometimes being the center of attention can be okay, when I am comfortable with it.
These are huge lessons for someone who has been shy and scared all their life.
Congratulations on returning once again to the Feature Box!
This would essentially be my reaction if I were put into Twilight's situation.
The bit with BigMac was epic. Burst out loughing.
3953099
I'd just like to point out that Pinkie Pride and Filli Vanilli were (according to the credits, at least) both written by the same person. Which just raises a whole other raft of questions!
3955255
Actually, I don't think "Find a Pet" was non-diegetic. Towards the end of the episode, when the rest of the Mane 6 are confused as to why Dash is so reluctant to take on the falcon, Fluttershy straight up asks if they need to sing about it again.
For those wondering why Flim and Flam aren't in the quartet, they stole the show two years ago and have been on the run since.
That last line killed me
3955608 Dude, every time my buddy here uploads a chapter, the story hits the feature box. Like, literally, every single time. Watch it when he uploads the next chapter.
3957252
First line that I actually choked on.
Comedy people have it hard when it comes to me.
3958859
Yeah... Btw, so far in this season we had killer vines, Rainbow Dash-shaped balloon, replica of Ponyville... Someone in Hasbro really likes Kaidan's fics...
3955436
Well put. I also posted a response about how different the lessons are in the Fluttershy episodes, but you managed to put it much more succinctly than I did and even brought up a few things I missed, especially with Dragonshy and Keep Calm and Flutter On.
3957980 You'd probably enjoy this, then
3953099
I wouldn't put it quite so viciously, but I do have to agree. Pinkie Pie was a colossal dick in this episode, pure and simple. I've never expected the pink one to win any awards for delicacy or tact, but she just came across as freakishly mean this time. It was a real sour note (rimshot) in an otherwise likable episode.
3960309
It wasn't just this episode. Castle-Mania had her egging on RD and AJ at the end - and enjoying it. Look at her face right at the end when she reminds the two that they hadn't settled the challenge. It's like someone said 'Pinkie isn't zany enough - let's ramp it up to eleven!' and then they broke the Zany-meter and she's more like Discord ... ugh.
Yeah, 'hacks' is a strong word but I was writing in the vein of the fic here. I wouldn't normally be so callous.
LOL!
Love the pony.mov reference too. :3
3960309
I will fucking kick your face in first you asshole! sorry still coming off the i been defending pinkie's ass all weekend high. Its nothing personal i am just protective of her because of all the backlash she's been getting since this awful episode aired. So yeah this chapter was funny it made a bad episode good.
3960415
Hmm what do i see another hater i can toy with? XD
3961603
The episode isn't awful—if anything, it's a classic FIM scenario that's well-executed overall. The one truly awful thing is Pinkie Pie being bizarrely OOC. She's arguably suffering from uninspired writing lately, but she's just bad in this episode.
