I mean to be fair, she was laying it too thick.. anyone would snapped at her at that point, Sunset just giving her a mother of all death glares is justified and doesn't mean she's regressing to who she was before. Wallie just pushed the Goku Button.. she shouldn't have done that.
I find your Wallflower to be a lot more toxic than the canon one. Certainly in this chapter.
I also really didn't care for the last act of the movie though. Nor what Sunset had to go through.
Murderous intent right there.
Wallflower laid it on way too thick and got a taste of Sunbutt Jr's completely non-existent fuse.
PITCH...FORKS, GET YOUR PITCHFORK HERE! GET'EM WHILE THEY'RE SHARP!
In all seriousness, great work. Hoping the holidays pass so that you'd continue more of this story (and cause I work as a cashier for a walmart ... with Christmas close by.)
I like your take on Wallflower and was surprise to hear of Lyra had known of Twilight.
I'm wondering how that'd play in the Friendship Games. Already excited to see how the girls' would react meeting scitwi. See you soon and have a great holiday.
Woof. This Wallflower needs to chill, though like,,,, I can’t hold it against her. Totally could have been more subtle, though. Cmon, Wally. Don’t you know how to be lowkey?
I like Sunset’s animalistic behaviours that she has sometimes haha. Very interesting at the end, there. I cannot wait for the holidays to pass so we get to see more!
And I agree with you about Forgotten Friendship. Sunset was the victim. Wallflower was toxic and petty and outright horrible. She needs help. I hate the idea that “Maybe it’s not good enough to not be mean. Maybe you have to be nice.” (or whatever it was that Trixie said, idk. I can usually quote pretty well but this special escapes me). I hate it so much. Sunset literally did nothing wrong that was deserving of what Wallflower did. Wallflower just needs to sort through her shit. Despite having written like… 3? Sunflower stories I really hate that ship. The moral should have been “its not okay to hurt other people because you’re hurting.”
Great chapter, I loved seeing into Wallflower’s head, even if she does need some practice in reading people, despite what she may think.

I'll take two of your best. Nice chapter and character buildup however.
Well, I guess even the lowest of the low of CPA are elitist snobs. Quite frankly, given that Lyra was part of that group, I'm glad she's in a healthier environment (ignoring in between the Fall Formal and the Battle of the bands). Heck, even Moondancer escaped it studying abroad.
Wallflower witnessed the famous glare that sends nerds into their lockers at CHS. And it was well-deserved, given how judgey Wally's being. Maybe wait until you hear back from Lyra, ok hun? And be very afraid. Sunset Shimmer is one beast you do not want to tangle with.
Well, Wallflower got the mother of all "you do not fuck with me" moments from Sunset. Which she totally deserved. I don't think she realized just what she was saying to Sunset when she tried lording her status as "lower class" over her. Wallflower just set off every "arrogant rich asshole" box in Sunset's head, and she's not going to forgive her that, especially since she's throwing Sunset's past at her.
Getting into Blush's head like that was insightful. On the one hand, I can understand why she's as distrustful of Sunset as she is, since she's only ever been in the kind of toxic environment of CPA, and has only ever had their bad examples to work with. She expects the worst because that's all she's ever seen. And she can't fathom that a person can and would change for the better, because in her mind there is no benefit to it.
I wouldn't be surprised if there was also a large amount of jealousy and possessiveness to what Blush is doing. Twilight is one of the few people who sees her, and Wallflower one of the few people at CPA that treats Twilight like a person.
Regarding SunFlower, I'm with you. There are exceedingly few instances where I like it as a pairing, and in those cases, its where there is no memory stone incident. With the memory stone incident? Yea, fuck that, because that's essentially a rape victim dating their rapist. And make no mistake about it, what Wallflower did in that movie was serial mindrape. She forced herself on the minds of other people and took something from them with the intent of hurting another person. I don't care how "justified" she felt over being ignored. What she did was petty, vindictive, and cruel. "Nobody deserves to be ignored?" True. But you know what else is true? "Nobody deserves (i.e. is owed) to be noticed." If you want to be noticed, you need to make the effort. You need to find people who will notice you. Her blaming Sunset for her invisibility was just shifting the blame to a convenient target, and not taking responsibility for her own social position.
Well now this is rather an interesting take on Wallflower. And I think I can see where you're building her towards. I like it. It's a good angle.
She is either a Sociopath.
Or a Psychopath.
Not quite sure what the difference is and if it makes any difference in this case.
Wallflower would have probably gotten away with it had she just kept the attack on Sunset. But calling her friends trailer trash? Yeah, that wasn't going to happen.
And now Sunset knows that the "best" CPA has, according to Twi, is that. I'm seeing another fight over that damn school happening soon.
11426056
Sunset was definitely not happy with her.
11426079
I guess it depends on you view of toxic. I sort of weigh “being a mouthy bitch” a little less nasty than “deciding to ruin the lives of seven people”, but i tend to have strong thoughts sbout those who violate other people.
11426187
Didnt she just? Haha.
11426246
Never fear, we will continue the story, holidays are just very hectic for us. Also, “i would not be you for all the world…” cashier at wally world? Oof.
Things will get worse before they get better, and the Games will be one Hell of an eyeopening experience!
11426255
Wallflower wouldnt know chill if you handed her a bag of ice, lol.
Yeah, Forgotten Friendhip had some good scenes in it, but oh boy does the moral fall flat. And Wallflower is just… i dunno. They could have done so much more, but didnt. And the pairing just…guh. Its one of the few times that not only does the pairing disgust me, i also feel like I should question what kind of people are supporting it, because…in what universe is this a healthy relationship??? But then, i dont really get most of shipping in any fandom because of the “smash the dolls together yelling at them to kiss!” Nature of so much of it. Thats not how relationships work.
11426289
Glad you liked it!
11426351
Lyra managed to find a better group of friends, yes. Now if only we could Twilight out of that toxic pit.
And yes, Wallflower was on the receiving end of one very hellish glare, wasnt she?
11426388
Sunset was definitely unhappy with her and didn’t appreciate the petty nonsense either.
The insight was important. Its one thing to show Wallflower being bitchy and petty, but writing this from her PoV was a way to let people see just how far down the rabbit hole goes. Yes, CPA and her homelife havent given her the best view of people, but…her character story mirrors parts of two other character stories, one of whom refused to let her own struggles harden her heart, and another who has spent half a million words learning how wrong she was. Which I suppose feeds back to the central theme about Choices.
And yes. In not so many words, that is exactly what i was getting at with the Sunflower ship. And how I feel about the moral of that movie. No one is “entitled” to anything from another person except common courtesy…and that is a form of polite respect that goes both ways. Sunset didnt owe Wallflowe friendship—fact is, no one likes everybody, or is going to be friends with everyone, and thats okay. If tou dont want to be friends with a person being polite is the best thing you can do.
11426398
Im pretty happy with this take on her so far. Less making her someone new and fleshing out what we see in canon.
11426489
Girl’s got some issues. She needs a psych eval and a stern talking to.
11426524
Wallflower pushed too far, definitely, and Sunset isnt happy. This isnt going to end well.
11426713
Yeah, I think it's more a case of definition in this case. In the movie I feel like Wallflower has been dealt a really bad card in life considering nobody notices her. So I can't blame her for trying to change things. I can blame her for the method she uses though, and how far she takes it (way too far). I don't feel like toxic is the word though. Definitely not a good thing, that's for sure.
In this chapter though, she is determined from the get go to see Sunset as a bad person/friend/etc. It doesn't matter what Sunset says or does, Wallflower has already made judgment and won't change it for anything. That's much more my definition of toxic.
Wow.
Now THAT, is how you cliffhanger.
I absolutely loved Wallflower's first impression of Sunset by sight alone and how it burned like paper in fire. And Twilight, ever the social dull stone, missed allllll of it. I have to admit, the description Wallflower experienced when she looked at Sunset when she let the demon flow through her gaze is frighteningly accurate. If you have ever looked a person in the eye who is holding themselves back and the only thing keeping you unharmed and alive is their sheer will and the grace of god it is truly, truly terrifying and you are full allowed to soil yourself afterwards. You and the team enjoy your break as best you can, (do the holiday family obligation two-step we all know so well.)
11427401
So glad you enjoyed the cliffhanger. :} And yeah, while I've never been on the "pants-shittingly terrified" reaction to the kind of glare in question, I am familiar with what you mean, and that is...pretty much what I was going for. For reasons.
Have a good holiday!

Took me a bit to consider how I wanted to reply. I don't like the idea of fighting in the comments, and everyone is allowed to have their own perspective and opinion.
However, I'm also the kind of person who likes debating perspectives. I don't expect to change your mind, and as always, you are allowed to hold your own opinions--I will not fault you for them.
So let me...break a few things apart here and address them one at a time, perhaps provide a bit more...clarification on my own point of view.
The first being the...somewhat sensitive comparison of "pairing a victim with rapist." (though I used the term 'attacker')
I understand your feeling that this is...perhaps an extreme view, but I would like to make some comparisons to actions here.
1. Wallflower held a power over others. She violated their persons without their consent. In this case, she violated their minds. Not Sunset's at first, but all of the people around her. Not five or six people, not a dozen, but the entire population of a high school, at the very least, including the adults. Even in small numbers, that's probably a few hundred people for a school. And not just once. The indications in the movie are that she had been doing this for some time, one or two or a class of people at a time, altering their memories of events at her whim, without consent.
Now, I'm not sure how familiar you are with science fiction and fantasy, but this kind of action--violating the minds, thoughts, and memories of others is often referred to as "mind-rape." It is often used as an allegory in media for actual rape because it's...well, frankly, its not overtly sexual.
2. Wallflower took away people's memories, and thus Sunset's identity as a person.
Memory makes us who we are. Our own memories--all of the moments, feelings, and experiences we go through, those shape us. And that shape of us is then further refined by the memories and perceptions of those around us--friends, family, co-workers, peers, neighbors.
By stripping away parts of that, she took Sunset's identity from her. From the world around her. For the duration of the special, the Sunset Shimmer that we watched grow and change over the course of 4 movies/specials ceased to exist in the realities of the people around her. That person no longer existed. She was, in a sense, worse than dead, because at least death is an ending. This was deletion, as if she had never been at all.
And when the same power stripped years of memory from Sunset, leaving her a terrified pony with no idea where she was or what had been done to her? She had, effectively, killed the Sunset Shimmer we knew. That Sunset, all the memories and experiences and emotions that made her who she was, was gone. Erased.
On those two points alone, I feel like the comparison is apt, first because being assaulted, being violated, having someone take something from you against your will, no matter how loudly you say no, and with no regard to how you feel about it, is a terrible thing that leaves behind more than a mark. It also leaves a lot of victims feeling damaged. Dirty. Broken. Like something is wrong with them. The initial trauma can leave them feeling like part of them is dead inside. Some lose interests. Some shy away from things they once loved. Some are afraid. Regardless of their reaction, a victim is always changed in some way by the experience, even after they come to terms with it, even after they heal.
Which is, in a way, my next point:
Sunset remembers what happened. They all do. Nothing will ever change that. They will all remember what Wallflower did, and while they can forgive her. While they can let her make amends, that event will always exist. And that kind of baggage...that's exactly the same kind of baggage that exists between a victim and their attacker. No matter what circumstances occur, no matter how hard the attacker may try to change, the victim will never truly be able to forget it, and if someone can violate your trust, your person, your self that way once....
They can do it again.
So from my perspective, a perspective that is colored by my personal experiences with the compared subject, I do not feel the comparison is extreme. I feel it is, in many ways not only an appropriate comparison, but also the primary reason why I am so horrrendously uncomfortable with the Sunflower pairing.
That out of the way, I also feel like I should address the other part of what you drew attention to. That is, EqG1 Sunset. Bully Sunset.
First. Yes. You are absolutely right. Sunset DID violate the minds of the student body during the Fall Formal. I would also constitute what she did as a gross violation of people's persons without their consent. All of the other bits aside, she did do that. That act is on par with Wallflower's actions erasing memories and violating people's minds. It is comparable.
However...a lot of the other stuff, the bullying...is not. Don't get me wrong. Bullying is horrible. I despise bullies. I used to be their worst nightmare once upon a time in high school, because I would intervene, and I wasn't afraid of them.
But...threatening to punch a peer. Or demanding their lunch money. Posting humiliating photos of them on the lockers. Even getting them blamed for...trashing the gym...or stealing a choosey magical artifact from your homeworld...
That's not really on the same level as violation of their sense of self.
Even being a conniving bitch and driving a wedge in a friendship is...horrible, but its not the same thing. Sure, she lied and pretended to be other people in texts or emails. Spread rumors. Manipulated information....
The girls and the other students went along with it. Look at how fast Princess Twilight was able to clear up everything with asking a question. With One girl talking to another and saying "but I never said that. I did this because of this." And in less than five minutes, Sunset's work came undone.
It's not the same level of activity as a violation of the sense of self.
And it did come undone. Sunset Shimmer lost everything. She was left crushed in the dirt, with no power over anyone, and then spent months (I think the canon timeline is...six months between the first and second movies?) being the target of mistrust and hostility. No one liked her. No one trusted her. The only people willing to give her a chance seemed to be the five girls. Even Princess Twilight was leery of her when she came back.
People didn't just forgive her.
And this is where I make another statement that probably shouldn't surprise people either.
Sunset's actions at the formal. Her toxicity before she got 1.21 gigahugz of friendship laser to the face? THe act of mind controlling the student body and trying to kill Princess Twilight? Those are all reasons that contribute to why I cant get behind her being in a relationship (again) with Flash, or with someone like Fluttershy, or any of her other past victims.
For the exact same reasons as the whole Sunflower pairing.
I haven't forgotten Sunset's actions. In fact, the entire first Arc of this Story is called "Redemption" for a reason. Its something that lingers in Sunset's mind through the whole of the story. Its something that in Rubicon, will remain with Sunset for a very long time.
Its why that first conversation between her and Flash was so awkward. Its why she didn't fight back against being shoved around, or the stuff in her locker, or even the stuff during the Rainbow Rocks arc. Its what lingers in her mind even in the second arc, its behind her self-recriminations and self-flagellation. Its behind every "No offense" and "she-demon joke". Its behind even the way some of the students are doing their own thing to protect themselves, unwilling to rely on Sunset. Its even behind why there are several factions among the students and staff about the whole magical mess.
As for the fandom itself....while I can't speak for everyone out there...despite the shipping, the fandom didn't just decide that Sunset needed a hug and a hot date. The fandom is rife with stories about the fact that she was expected to FIX HER SHIT. She had to work at forgiveness. She was never portrayed as the Victim of her own nastiness. No one said "oh you poor thing, its clearly everyone else's fault you turned into a demon."
The fans, pretty universally, love her redemption arc. Her third act breakdown, her fall, her slow progress towards overcoming her past and becoming someone better.
So yes. Sunset did some bad shit. Neither canon nor fandom (myself included) gave her a pass or an excuse.
But I'm not willing to give Wallflower one either.
11428769
Do you think if wallflower had an entire character arch like sunset you would still like her? You are right wallflower did some horrible things that cant be forgiven like the dazzlings, but i guess thats not the dazzelings or wallflower that i fell inlove with, those are the version the fandom made, this fandom saw the untuch potetial of this characters and made things to make them more interesting and better characters
Wen i think of wallflower i tink on th versions made by scampy or I A M not the one forgotten friendship version (lets be honest that movie was shit)
This was kinda eye opening for me in a way and made me like those verions of wally more than the oficial one and made me apreciate them and this fandom
So......yea........here is a derpy for your troubles
11428873
I think....had the character been given more depth, and a better amount of characterization, both during the movie (as an antagonist), and later in some kind of reformation/redemption tale, yes, I would like the character better as a whole. However, I do not think I would ever be comfortable with pairing her with her previous victims--just the same as I don't feel comfortable pairing Sunset with HER previous victims. Its...a dynamic that, like I said, starts with broken trust and lots of baggage, and that just...isn't healthy.
Hell, half the reason that I'm working Wallflower into the story this early is to give her that characterization that flows, that makes sense, so that when some events surrounding the stone eventually occur, (though not in the same way as canon, lol), her actions during that arc will make sense. They will feel like a natural step on the character's arc, and ultimately, will feed into how the character's arc in Rubicon ends.
And yes, it is very possible to enjoy a fan made incarnation or interpretation of a character more than the canon version. Just as iit is possible to enjoy fanfiction takes on all kinds of things better than the canon. (I can think of one much beloved show in particular where I do this pretty hard...because the latter half of ReBoot Season 4 is a dumpster fire).
*offers holiday cookies and some nice cocoa*
I'm glad we could engage in an intelligent and respectful discussion. :} Once again, I feel genuinely pleased to have such engaging people reading and commenting on my little corner of the internet!
:}
11428896
And thank for being respectfull trought this odd little debate and i exited to see what you and your team will do after the break!
So excited for the comeback, I just binged this entire book in two weeks, for real could not put it down. Thanks for such an amazing story!
hahah, getting all the wrong ideas at all the wrong times
sunset would walk all over crystal prep in her prime, and could still hold her own quite handily today
yay!
she does exist! she's not just a figment of sunset's imagination or dreams!
uh oh
CHAI TEA?! CHAI MEANS TEA
11626162
Yeah that maybe true about Chai Tea, but in a lot of Western places like in America for example, Chai tea is considered its own type of tea.
Oh did Wallflower screw up and I can't 100% blame her. From the outside looking in without a lot of context there are a lot of ways that Twilight & Sunset's does look like it could be abusive. Given that... wow is she horrible. Yeah she has no reference frame for anything other being a horrible person, but some of the things she did were as bad or equal to Sunset at her worst. Divulging secrets and making rumors just to see the chaos it brings is disgusting. Sure the school has weird dark magic making people worse, but there still had to be some part of her to want to do that to be exasperated. It probably then wouldn't have been that horrible if Wallflower hadn't denigrated Sunset's other friends.
Sunset using Conqueror's Haki on Wallflower 😆
