Poor Cranky, he's just done with magical bs.
Human politics. Ah, that little bit with the "Nam vet" really made my skin crawl. For all that Sunset did before her cleansing, she really wasn't all that much worse than a typical high-school bully. And if they never turned over one of the multitude that have probably gone through their school before, they're a bunch of hypocrites if they turn on Sunset because she stopped and tried to turn over a new leaf.
Cranky being a magic-hunter was a surprise. Curious to see where it goes.
Huh, well, I certainly wasn't expecting Cranky of all people to be the one who has tangled with magic in the past.
HAH! that was what I immediately thought when he mentioned a "boisterous magician" and his "ego-driven daughter".
Granny Smith doesn't fuck around.
Huh, that's an interesting callback to pony!Pinkie and donkey!Cranky.
I have a feeling this is going to be more helpful than you might think, Cranky. If magic already existed in this version of EqG then Sunset's going to have a *huge* leg up to finding out how it works as a human (let's remember her main stumbling block for now is her unfamiliarity as to how the human body could handle magic, or rather, how unlike the way to channel it as a unicorn it was).
Incidentally, since at least in canon Star Swirl's justification for using the EqG world as a dumping ground was the lack of magic in it, this would make him even more incompetent than he was in canon...
Huh, I had thought, the way the narration had been going, that Cranky was a widower.
Is there anything you *don't* have an extensive background for? :P
Aha, that would certainly change the initial exploratory investigations, depending on whether he chooses to actually get involved with the girls, or whether he stays back as a reserve.
Even one who knows the basics of what happened and their source doesn't really know what happened at the end, huh? The Elements really did a good job covering their tracks with the memory wipe.

Aye, it was meant to be unsettling, but it highlights a very real human condition: fear/demonization of that which is unknown or different. The human mind will cone up with ways to rationalize treating another person like that, and the big go to’s are to link it to survival, or to find a way to give oneself the moral high ground. In this case, magic is the unknown, the scary and different, and the rationalization is that Sunset spent years being a bitch, and is therefore a bad person, meaning her suffering/“being punished” over the magic is really just a bad person getting what they deserve. (You can see the same behavior in real world bigots of any flavor. Replace “magic” with any other deviation from the “norm”, and the idea remains the same.) is it stupid? Yes. Time and again Ive laughed when people talk about “how did sunset not end up in jail” or what have you, and I like to counter with “she was a textbook high school mean girl. To a teenager, that might be the greatest evil ever, but to an adult, its just...kids being stupid kids.” Go to any high school and youll find a dozen girls just like that...and dig into them, and youll find a reason behind the bullying. It doesnt make bullying right, but...bullies are human too—even if some of them just need an ass whoopin’.
And yes. Cranky has...a history. Less magic hunter, more...drug into things against his want.
Well, going by his Donkey counterpart, if anyone has run into human magic it would be Cranky. This is going to get interesting.
Seems Human Pinkie wasn't near as... Forceful, with her befriending efforts as her pony self was. Thak goodness.

Yup. Cranky is something ive been hinting at and waiting to spring on yall.
As for Trixie and her parents...the idea of human magic is part of the big concept of the worlds ive worked on, and the idea that Trixie, for all she’s a blustering egomaniac, is actually capable of real magic was an appealing idea i plan to explore later. (Artemis just tickles my funny bone, and given that Long Road sold me on SunsetXSci-Twi, sticking a few nods to the story here and there are my way of acknowledging an incredible work of fiction. I do the same with a few others here and there, such as a handful of nods to a Rarijack story called “The Laughing Shadow,” and at least one to a Danny Phantom story called “Links in the Chain.”)
Granny Smith lives on a huge farm. Theres lots of places to hide a body, and really, hogsll eat anything.
I like the idea of pinkie being someone that Cranky has somehow gotten a soft spot for. It’s adorable.
It will certainly help if Sunset can find some knowledge on magic in the human world. There are some key fundamental differences between humans and unicorns that are an issue. Starswirl was an arrogant ponce who thought he knew best. (Hmmm...his visual similarities to Dumbledore now make sense...)
*considers* anyone i dont have a backstory for? Hmmm...Snips and snails maybe? Mostly because I hate them. No wait, i did do a brief “why are they fuckwits?” pondering at one point. Um... any character introduced after season 6?

I'm curious whether you've read two others of my favorite SciSet fics, namely, Knight in Sunlit Armor and Fractured Sunlight.

To be fair, human pinkie was a little girl of about six or seven when she introduced herself to the new neighbors, as opposed to being the equivalent of a college aged adult. The antics that are adorable from a child are obnoxious from an adult.

Yes to both, lol.
I don't envy the BS one must go through to be at the top of the chain.
It is however endearing to see Celestia and Luna going to bat for Sunset. Especially Luna laying down the smack. Woot!
*realizes it's Cranky
Re-reading this, Cranky gives me some Uncle vibes:
Through the entire chapter I had sneaking suspicion he was a local version of Discord. That janitor. And my suspicion wasn't even remotely close. Bravo!
On the other hoof I was itsy bitsy disappointed that I missed. This world make more sense... wait.
Now, that's some original shit
