Ah. I was wondering how Friendship Games was gonna get spicy considering Sunset and Twilight are in a relationship. That was.... very spicy. Excuse me while I go panic and scream into the void.
Things got dark quickly.
A contract is mentioned. It looks like something between Twilight and the Master. Probably not legally binding, but will likely carry with it some form of magic effect.
I wonder if Sunset Shimmer will notice anything going on at Crystal Prep. And now that I think about it, Twilight Sparkle is learning how to detect magic.
Of course Cinch's doing a demon's bidding.
Well, looks like we have some fae involved now, don't we. Kinda curious if the Master is a canon character, or something else.
I'm also now dreading whatever these two are planning with Twiggles, because she's got a very protective unicorn watching over her. You don't mess with unicorns and their mates. It never ends well.
oooo- The plot thickens!
Looks like this Master is the local equivalent of Sombra at a quick glance.
"Sidhe"--Irish for fairy. Ultimately from the Hebrew "shed."
As a retired college professor acquaintance of mine once observed, "the Good People are nothing you and I want anything to do with."
I really like the idea that Cinch isn't really human. I actually felt sorry for her when her plans all went south, and this makes that unnecessary.

A great many somethings.

THere is a very good chance that Twilight will make a teakettle sound when she sees pony ears on her Sunny for the first time.

*offers a panic blanket*
10997624
I guess we'll have to see what's going on, won't we? *cackles evilly.*
10997797
Don't make deals with demons, kiddies. It never goes well for anyone but the demon.

I'm curious to see who people think the Master is. And yes, the Third Race are a dangerous bunch...especially the sidhe. As for their plan with Twilight...well...time will tell...Though you're right, Sunset will not take kindly to that. That's her nerd, dammit!
10997937
It does!

Cryssssssstalssssss....

Your professor had the right of it. And yes, I felt there was something decidedly cold, inhuman, and calculating about Abacus Cinch, so we decided to run with it.

When I was in high school one of my favorite books to check out of the school library was Irish Fairy and Folk Tales, published in the nineteenth century and edited by William Butler Yeats (I am happy to say I now own a paperback of that book with even more material added).
I had always thought that fairies were good and positive. It was not until reading this book that I learned that that view of fairies is very bowdlerized, originating in the Elizabethan and Victorian eras. Apparently the real thing was feared and avoided, and the term "the Good People" was used by the common folk as a euphemism.
I have since that time been fascinated by them, and love when they are placed in FiM fics. The most fascinating thing about them is that the belief in them is universal despite the fact that there is no reason for them to exist in almost all worldviews.
They aren't angels. They aren't ghosts. They aren't space aliens. They do not fit either in modern science or in conventional religion. Yet people everywhere seem to believe in them. Why???
My aforementioned professor friend had a theory that the human mind naturally rebels against a world where everything has been logically explained and classified. Medieval scholastic philosophy did just this; it left no room for any unanswered questions. It's possible that the human mind created them specifically because they don't fit in, in order to oppose this overly rationalist worldview.
I have no idea if they actually exist or not (even in my own very non-Celtic family there is a story), but I have absolutely no wish or desire to encounter one.

To quote Terry Pratchett:
Well nice to see Sombra has some connection to, what appears to be, Unseelie fey.
Welp, if they want magic's attention going after a Twilight is a good way of getting it. Not a good way of making it happy, but you will definitely get it's attention.
Adding in a emotionally distraught Unicorn of Sunset's power and this could go very badly for the surrounding area, if not the planet.

I've always enjoyed the idea of the fae and faeries as beings that are fundamentally different from us. Creatures that exist in a way that is incomprehensible to mortals, yet are fascinated with us because of our mortality. But that fascination is an alien, unknowable thing that while not actively malicious, isn't benign either.
Not sure if either of you have ever played Ravenloft E3.5 (rest in peace White Wolf, you were a great game company that fell victim to political correctness gone wrong), but one of the antagonistic races included in that edition were the Shadow Fae. The ellefolk were probably one of my favorite additions to the game, because they presented a threat that was so fundamentally different than the other creatures of Ravenloft.

I've actually never played a computer game in my life, other than the old online java games (I'm 64). I've read "Lord of the Rings," though (and it wasn't easy!).
As to the possibility that "sidheog" ("sheehogue") being from the Hebrew "shed," it is interesting that in Judaism the shedim (demons) are actually inferior to people (unlike other spiritual beings), though they certainly don't like us (such as laughing at us when there is no clue as to where the laughter is coming from). They also are NOT fallen angels but were created that way. Though spiritual beings, they assume physical form to reproduce, and live in waste places where there isn't anybody around (such as the North Pole).
One final observation and I'll stop bothering you:
The Irish folklore book I referenced earlier has a section of old, pre-Xian druidic stories. One of these involves a talking pony (actually an enchanted prince, I'm afraid) and introduced me to the concept of a geas or geis *decades* before anyone else had heard of it. It isn't a magic spell but some sort of binding obligation, sort of like an oath. In this story the wicked old woman who is the villain of the story is constrained by a geas to sit on the roof of the grain storehouse and eat only what she can pull out of a tiny hall with the tip of her bodkin. Or something like that. It's weird. Let an anime show THAT!

Ravenloft is actually a D&D Horror campaign setting. Most of the creatures you'd face were drawn from gothic horror, so things like ghosts, vampires, werebeasts, cursed houses and the like. It's what made the Shadow Fae stand out. They were so different.
Okay, yeah, I'm horrified now. Rainbow lasers on standby!

What I find interesting is that in places like Ireland, the people there are STILL super cautious. That ring of stones connected to the Fair Folk? Don't fuck with them. We don't care if you want to put in a road--go the fuck around it, because no one who lives here wants to stir them up. Like the level that the superstition persists into a modern day is quite interesting, and the stories that havent been sanitized are kind of terrifying filled with an inhuman Otherness that can't quite be understood.
10998486
Pratchett wasn't wrong. And Cinch here is NOT a good being. Twilight might be in serious trouble.
10998529
They're definitely going to get SOMETHING'S attention. What or who remains to be seen, of course. And yes, an emotionally distraught Sunset Shimmer with that kind of power she has is a bad idea. Look at how bad she was when she was interested in having power. I'd rather imagine that if something happens to Twilight, it'll make the formal look like a child's tantrum.
10998712
Yes, the Otherness of the Fae, the sense of just absolutely playing by different rulesets and a completely alien psychology has always been fascinating--in fact, I will freely admit it has been stories involving these kinds of Others in myths and tales that are one of the big reasons I'm so huge on the whole fantasy race psychology/sociology/cultural differences thing. Because they aren't human and we cant expect them to view things our way. They aren't humans with pointy ears or humans with green skin or humans that are short and drink a lot. They're different cultures, different entities, with their own way of doing things that isn't necessarily going to follow our morality or our beliefs or traditions.
Though in this...I will say that Cinch IS more an example of an Other that is also EVIL. This Cinch does particularly heinous things, sometimes simply because they feel like it. It doesn't mean ALL of their kind of being in the Rubicon universe is evil, but they and theirs are, and their Master is even worse.

Think they might need a little more than Rainbow Lasers this time.
finally had some time to read. wow, i mean everything thats happened this far has been really thought provoking and leaves me wanting more, but this?
needless to say, i am thoroughly… confused. not in a bad way, but in the way that i really want to know what happens next and wtf is up with this character. you mentioned in an author note that Cinch is… sucky, but i certainly wasnt expecting this! now it makes me wonder what is up with the book Sunset has now even more!
onto the next!

I'll join you there as this meatball got way spicier way faster than expected. Here's hoping SciTwi lives.
If you aren't familiar with Old World of Darkness, you should take a look. It's my favorite RPG setting, and Changeling is my personal pick from among them.
ugh i dont know if it was just me or not but i kept feeling a sense of dread in your chapters, probably just me
i havent been able to read your work for a while but now that i can there are quite a few chapters to read
as always thanks for the writing its wonderful, also the good folk, yikes
Aw shoot. This sounds like its gonna be ten times worse than just Midnight Sparkle, something the human Element bearers might need backup for, and Daydream Shimmer might not be enough.
And great! More emotiphages, as if the Sirens weren't enough...
Wicked Witch wasn't that far off an assessment for this version of Cinch.
Daydream Shimmer on standby, and add in Princess Sunbutt for good measure.
I've been reading this story for the past week since I found it, and it has been a fantastic experience. It's very impressive how you have been able to make even fairly minor characters feel like people in their own right, instead of constructed characters that fill a role. It definitely speaks to the skill, passion and dedication that you and your friends/editors/co-writers have for this story.
I always love seeing the ponies and other non-human creatures being portrayed as properly NOT human, even if they may have similarities. It really helps sell that despite them appearing human (in the EQG world at least), there are many cultural differences both minor and major that have occurred because of the different physiology, history and circumstances. Sunset and Princess Twilight make a very interesting contrast with the Sirens and now Cinch, since the ponies can mostly pass for human and coexist apart from some occasional major culture clashes (the cutie mark discussion is a good example) while the Sirens were very much inhuman monsters. They were able to pass as human, but had a completely different set of values and world outlook that was, shall we say, incompatible with peaceful coexistence. Cinch and her Master are looking to be similar in that regard, what with the human sacrifice and such.
Sparky and Sunset are of course very cute together. It's been great seeing their relationship develop and how they supported each other through some difficult times. It's also been great how that relationship has brought other ones into Sunset's life, particularly with Velvet and Cadence, and that they can offer support and connections that Mane 5 aren't really able to. The Mane 5 have been great to and for Sunset, and vice-versa (like Applejack said at the sleepover about the whole Demon Queen thing ultimately ending up strengthening their friendship and helping them see how precious it was before they might have drifted apart), but there is still a kind of gap there. Peer group friends are very important, but with Sunset's position, she does need other kinds of connections and support systems that peers simply can't provide. Velvet, Cadence and Luna I feel have played important roles in helping to ground and support Sunset in some very difficult times of her life so far.
I'm probably forgetting some things, but I have really been enjoying this story. There's still quite a bit more so far to read, which I am very much interested in. Thank you very much for writing this, it's been a wonderful experience to read through.
This is getting dark, I'm worried
i dunno if i like the direction this is going. like the escalation was a bit too fast....ya gotta ease into the whole demon sacrifices thing a bit slower than that. going from piddly teenage angst problems to.....THIS was a bit of a leap.
