Third time in a row: Ouch
Gee Sunbutt, I dunno, maybe if you'd quit the Cryptic BS and actually let her know what you expected of her...
Summer needs to have a chat with twilight to really learn how she became a princess instead of the summary spike gave.
Stupid tracker didn't alert me to the last chapter. Oh well, that means I got to read two in a row, hehe.
One has to wonder, if right there at the end, whether or not Celestia caught even a glimpse of how much of that was her own fault. Within the context of the show, it certainly was an interesting coincidence how much Luna and Sunset mirrored each other. How even an extra thousand years of experience, and a horrible example to not want to repeat, couldn't stop her from doing it all over again. From the outside it's fairly obvious it was on purpose.
I do enjoy SLV's quip about the unintended sarcasm in its name.
Hang in there Sunset, resist those negative urges, listen to SLV when it makes sense, and you can get through this.

Yeah, Sunny can be absolutely scathing when ahe wants—its part of having a super high intellect coupled with a temper. Large vocabulary and a bitchiness quota.
And yes, Princess Momlestia is cryptic as fuck. She suffers heavily from “detached immortal syndrome,” and I’m digging into that for her psychology and how it affects her interactions. There’s also the problem that Celestia and Sunset are super similar in more ways than I think are readily apparent (Sunset had to learn it from somewhere), and part of that is the tendency to internalize certain emotions instead of communicating.) the biggest problem with the argument there though is that they are arguing about two different things, they just dont realize it.

For future reference, i try to update about once a week, usually Thursday night into Friday.
And yes, Celestia is...notoriously bad at family, isnt she? Dont worry, I have...plans. Plans that may in fact involve someone putting their silver horseshoe right in Celestia’s oversized rump to knock some sense into her.
Ah yes, Stupid Little Voice. Such an...interesting component to Sunset’s mind. *slow, wicked smile*

To be fair, I’m not even sure Princess Twilight is 100% sure of how/why she ascended. The show is pretty ambiguous as to what specific things trigger ascension, though i have some head canon-y type theories which may have gone i to my worldbuilding.
A thought I had during the site outage. I've seen a number of Sunset stories that focus on the end of high school, and most of them talk about Sunset having a lot of trouble figuring out what to do with herself in the human world after school. Your focus on a lot of the little things that make Sunset different has made me think of another field that her experiences make her fairly uniquely (on Earth) qualified for, that doesn't reallly exist here.
Xenosociology/Xenopsychology.
I can just see her first dissertation now: "The difficulties in inter-species communication caused by sub-conscious body language."
Between the quirks she knows she has, and spots in Princess Twilight, what she had to learn to interact with humans, and the way the Rainbooms in their pony-up state really messes with her head, she has quite a lot of material already.
Admittedly, such a field, and the concepts covered by the aforementioned paper, is probably well established in Equestria, all things considered. It would be quite the ground breaking study here though.

Have been saving this for the outage, thankfully I was able to save it offline before the site went belly up:
There was an Author's Note in another story that stuck with me regarding the "Celestia is bad at family":
If you compound that with DIS... then I can only pity Luna and Sunset.
Regarding ascension... yes, it's another part where the show's ambiguosness drives me up the wall. I've seen a few people argue that the spell was what made her ascend, an "make an alicorn" spell but IMO doesn't make sense then that it wouldn't be even mentioned again or that she wouldn't use it to, say, make her friends into alicorns too.
My headcanon is that it was just the last piece on a perfect storm, along with her attunement with the EoH and her completing some manner of metaphysical achievement or goal of sorts that triggered it.

The problem with that though, is that both the magic and Equestria would have to go public in order for her to be taken seriously, I think.
Having been yelled at by a 10 year old who doesn't understand why she can't go to a pool or park and no matter how hard I try to explain what a virus is she only wants things her way right here, right now. I have new appreciation of this. Very frustrating and hard not to tell back. I love that after seething self depreciation session that Sunset cuddled the sweater. That was beautiful, young love.

Oh sure, but it was fun to think about the kinds of things she could put in such a paper, and how she might try to disguise the actual origins of the information.
She probably could do it otherwise, as a purely theoretical sort of thing related to the space program. Would need a lot of obfuscation of source material and such, but such a thing COULD be done, I would think.

I have a few things im working with in this story, as far as why Celestia is so bad at family, particularly with Sunset. Part of it is the DIS, given the way ive adjusted the timeline to make shit happen over a much longer period in Equestria (instead of 1000 years ago being a busy year.) Celestia and Luna’s problem didnt happen overnight, but the loss of Luna removed the one pony in her life who was her equal and unafraid to call her out. Knowing what we do about Princess Luna, had she been present, Sunset’s relationship with Celestia probably wouldnt have tanked so hard. But its also some of Celestia’s personality traits—Sunset is more like her mother figure than most ponies realize. We see implications that under the facade, Celestia is hot tempered and stubborn, with a fiery nature and hidden issues—compare Daybreaker’s monologue and actions to Demon Sunset, for example. (One of the fun things I’m doing is using Principal Celestia as a way to showcase the fact that Sunbutt and Sunbutt jr are alike, and that despite the immortality, Princess Celestia is still an individual capable of making mistakes.)
As for Ascension, I use Cadence’s story too, because I find it to be fascinating as a backstory. From what I suspect there are several requirements, the first of which is raw power level. Twilight Sparkle, as we know, has raw power that is off the charts, and each of the alicorns seem to be capable of incredibly difficult magics that very few can do—like raising celestial bodies alone (since ancient unicorns seemed to have to work in groups to do so), or magics that affect the mind/emotions. They also seem to each have something that they are fairly unique in: Luna’s Dreamwalking, which, since its also tied to her cutie mark, or at least thats what the episode where Starlight switches their marks implies, Cadence’s power over emotions, etc. while there are things that seem to trigger/catalyze Ascension, there are definitely prereqs.

I actually feel like Sunset wouldnt do too bad figuring out what to do after High School. Magic exists in the human world, first off, second, high school barely scratches the surface of things you can learn—and sunset is, for all her appearance and attitude, just as nerdy as Twilight. Though raising the subject of interspecies communication is interesting, and I could see her, if not writing a paper on it, having a looooooong, very nerdy conversation with human Twilight (who has to be a sci fi fan, lol) on the subject. I have...a whole bunch of “amusing conversations” planned for Sunset in the story in regards to “difficulties with cultural and psychological differences.” A few are even in my editors hands already.

I’m glad you enjoyed her little emotional high of snuggling her girlfriend’s sweater. Sunset isnt ready to admit it, but we all know she’s got it baaaaaad for her girl.

I actually agree with you that she's as nerdy as Twilight, just in a different way. I really like the comparison that Twilight is the theorist and Sunset is the engineer. Twilight loves to research and investigate, Sunset wants to get her hands dirty. Twilight does experiments to prove her existing theories. Sunset experiments to find out how something works. It is why they work so well together as characters, they both complement each other and rein in each other's tendencies.
I'm not surprised you'd already have something of the sort lined up. I can hardly wait to see your take on it, and how it mixes with mine.
Sometimes, all that it takes to keep you teathered in the storm is a simple anchor. And sometimes, you need to be reminded that there are things you need to fight for, because its the right thing to do.
Glad to see that AJ is at least willing to admit that they said some hurtful things to Sunset.
And that little flashback to Celestia punting Sunset to the curb was all sorts of painful. Trying your best and not knowing what you're doing wrong is all sorts of agonizing.
10283170
That's fairly accurate to everything I've seen: Twilight is the theorist, Sunset's the one who applies them. Makes for a great intellectual partnership, because they can let their minds play off each other and get further than either could get alone, as well as making them both similar and different enough that their personalities work well together.
I hope what happens going forward does not disappoint. :}

One person, one kind word, one thing to hold onto in the darkness can sometimes make all the difference.
AJ recognizes when she puts her foot in her mouth...that, and her girlfriend probably pulled her aside at some point, lol.
The Sunset-Celestia interaction was painful for so many reasons, especially when you realize the biggest issue was caused by bad communication between them, and as the story continues, that will be addressed. In many ways. By many ponies/people/other.
