Soooooo gooooooddd!!!!!
I really can't wait another week for the next chapter!! So much in the feels!!
I will say it again, Velvet is a good mom (that's not to say nothing of Night Light)
Of course, Sunset trying to explain her falling out with Celestia while omitting certain details and the Sparkles misunderstanding totally does not add fuel to the fire that is the grudge against Princess Celestia. Man, is it ever gonna be a load off of Sunny's shoulders when she can finally reveal her origins and true nature (along with the cultural differences).
As for Sunset questioning Celestia's handling of the situation? Well, for one, Celestia's not a parent, even though she was the closest thing to a mother Sunset had, and two, I think it's been established she's bad at families. Great Ruler, not-so-great mom/sister.
Well this hit close to home. I grew up in a loud house. A calm conversation was a rare thing. My older brother used to get into some of the worst shouting matches with our parents. I tried to not let it rub off on me, but I'm a bit of a hot head as well. (One of the reasons I relate so much to Sunset Shimmer) It really is easy to let emotions fly and forget to explain to others, parent, friend, child, why you are angry and how everyone can go about solving the issue once the emotions have settled. Night and Vel are STILL BEST PARENTS EVER. I can easily imagine they big dopey grins on their faces as they listened to Sunset talk about their daughter with such love.
till next week, woot!
sunset has no lasting parental trauma whatsoever
nope, none at all.
awwww, velvet continues to be best mom!
I empathize with Sunset a lot. My own family… well, let's just say that it has a lot to do with my general attitude towards people. After all, if your family isn't safe, who is?
Poor Sunset, I don’t think Velvet and Night realised how much trauma Sunset has went through until now. I’m actually surprised that Velvet managed to keep her cool when she heard Sunset’s story and it’s no wonder why Sunset felt scared/confused for Twilight. It’s not exactly hard to get mad at Princess Celestia, I mean, has she even realised how much hurt she caused Sunset, hurt that Sunset is still holding onto through her teen years? I get that Celestia was angry, but I don’t think that could justify it, especially in Velvet’s eyes. I really do hope that Celestia has realised what’s she’s done despite it being late. I don’t think Velvet would want Sunset to ever be in contact with Celestia again (if she found out about her) unless Celestia has changed and isn’t going to hurt Sunset. Though I don’t think Celestia had meant it intentionally to hurt Sunset, I think her anger got the best of her?

I would keep in mind that this is only Sunset's side and perspective of the story. Memories of the Little Sun does start to give us Celestia's perspective, and shows immediately that Celestia regrets how she failed Sunset.

*plays with your emotions* Hehehehe.

Eyuuuuuuuup. There's going to be a massive stressor gone when she finally works up the stones to tell them the truth of her origins.
And yes, Celestia is....not great at personal relationships.

*chuckles* Yes, they listened with that sort of knowing amusement while Sunset gushed about Twilight.

What? Lasting parental trauma? Sunset Shimmer? Noooooooooooooooooo....I have *no* idea what you're talking about! She most certainly is not some kind of recovering megalomaniac with Mommy Issues. :P

Preach. Outside my mother, and *one* of my brothers (as long as he lives across the country and not in the same house), most of my family is a nightmare and a disaster. And I'm the oddball.

Yes, it paints a very negative picture of Princess Celestia....but at the same time, as noted, we are only being presented with Sunset's side of things, and she has (and had) a very limited perspective. To quote a dead jedi "...you're going to find that many of the truths we cling to depend greatly on our own point of view.." Other stories can and will explore other perspectives. Memories of the Little Sun is one...and Supernova will be another.
One of the important things to remember here is that...Sunset is not entirely a victim--something she herself holds to. She acknowledges that a good portion of what happened to her happened because of the choices she made...not just because of the actions of others. Now, as readers, we know (and as some other characters have pieced together) that Sunset was not entirely to blame for the way her life has gone. So I do caution you guys, as readers, to not lose sight of that because of the internal perspective that shows us just Sunset's point of view. There's a reason I'm giving you the limited perspective in the story, because Arc 1 is Sunset's story, Arc 2 is Sunset's Story but also Twilight's Story...and going forward, in a lot of ways it will be Their Story...so those perspectives are important to shaping how the plot is presented.

Speaking of which how old in pony years exactly was Sunset when she went through the mirror? Because that will also somewhat determine on how well Celestia acted. Another thing as kicking her out of the palace wasn’t really good, she did make sure Sunset had a place to live and did make sure that she could stay in her room for the night and then her things would be moved to a dormitory. I could see if Sunset didnt run off to human land, both could have cooled off and either Sunset, Celestia or both would approach each other and talk at some point. As during their last argument both were somewhat arguing the same thing while not knowing it
Also I could see Celestias doing her actions based on her childhood or somewhat how she was raised and she dosent know how to raise a child and no one though to tell her that she could have done things differently. Especially since she is vastly older than anyone else. Would explain things with Luna as well. As both are somewhat at fault. While we don’t know exactly what caused Luna to go all evil, its not all Celestias fault and its not all Lunas fault it happened. I wager its something in between.

In Rubicon, Equestrian ponies age comparable to humans--though the average pony lifespan is longer and HOW their adolescent development progresses is slightly different. Sunset was physically around 18-20 years old before she jaunted through the portal the first time. The transition to the human world shaved approximately 8 or 9 years off her age, leaving her in the body of roughly an 10-11 year old child. (There's a reason for the age difference, but I'll save that for a blog in the future.) So as Sunset's internal thoughts implied, she was "a near adult", not truly a foal still.
And yes, Celestia was dismissing her as a personal protégé, but she was still letting her maintain her enrollment at CSGU, and thus Sunset had access to use of the same dormitory situation as any other student there. She was not throwing her onto the street.
Celestia's...inexperience as a parental figure was part of her problem--in five thousand years or so, the only other real experience she had acting in the role of parent or pseudo parent was for Luna. That's...part of the backstory i have for their Ascension, their cutie marks, and the end of Discord's reign. Suffice it to say, their mother died when Luna was very young, and their father died when Celestia was a teenager and Luna just barely old enough for a cutie mark. There were other factors involved, and those will come to light in Supernova, but the inexperience did not help.

It does make me wonder, if we get to see Celestia’s prescriptive more in Memories of Little Sun, would she think about what could have happened if she was Sunset’s mother? To be honest, I think Celestia was scared, and I think she was scared to lose Sunset the way she did with Luna, which in result, caused her to lose Sunset anyway. People always say “how can Celestia not know that Sunset seen her as a mother”, but maybe, Celestia knew, she could have felt like the pressure of that being too much and fear of losing Sunset took over when Celestia started to establish firm boundaries and distance. I don’t know if Sunset being Celestia’s would have changed anything. If Sunset was, maybe she’d have a different relationship with Celestia and even Cadence too

I can only imagine how well the Sparkles will take it
"Magic? Ponies? Wait, Twily is dating a unicorn?"
Shining might take it well with being an O&O guy.
You know when the truth comes out, after the shock, Velvet and Night might get a little laugh about a magic unicorn living in their house and dating their daughter. And Velvet, Night, Twilight, Shining, and Cadence know she is hiding part of her history from them and are understanding about it so I'm pretty sure they will be understanding when she tells them everything.
while im autistic (+adhd) and don't struggle with heaps of anxiety like sparky here does ( i mean, i have had my BIG moments and its practically there everyday but i can talk to others or accidentally get into others personal space if need be ) I really relate to twilight right here with the tunnel vision and getting hella upset if she isn't able to go through with her fixations. idk, basically, to put it simply, take her personality and take away quite a bit of the social anxiety and u got something like me.
idk this makes me feel like im reading an autobiography of myself just with magic
