As I noted, the exact moment that Sunset got her mark is somewhere in an 8 hour period of time, and no one knows for sure exactly when it happened or what she was doing/feeling/expressing in that moment. Does it have a tie in? Perhaps. Perhaps not. Is there more to it? Perhaps. Perhaps not.
Amusingly, her song has been mentioned in passing, though not by name, nor has it been performed yet. I have plans for its initial appearance. :}
As for alicorn Ascension, or some sort of human variant...I suppose you'll have to wait and see if that happens or not.
....Celestia's thoughts and feelings will be explored in two planned stories: "Memories of the Little Sun" and "Supernova."

Twilight's a bit of a spaz. Thankfully, Sunny has learned how to handle that.
And yes, kids giving Sunset garbage as 'magic stuff', just creating a sea of seething frustration in our unicorn.
The POV was useful in driving home that PONIES ARE NOT HUMANS IN FUR COATS. They have a different world, culture, history, society, and EVERYTHING to us. Convergence is either from mutual exposure or just practical convergence (the same way Bats, birds, pterasaurs, and bugs all separately evolved wings for flight with similar elements but some fundamental differences.) And to see Sunset from a completely external perspective that was from the same world.

I've done a lot of work with cutie marks and shaping pony culture around them. They're shown to be such a huge part of a pony's identity and that following that mark is almost a compulsion--even if it leads to disaster or suffering, suggesting that even the worst of those disasters are still preferable to NOT following what its telling a pony. I tend to treat cutie marks in rubicon as a "True Name" of sorts....a crystallization of the essence of their soul in a symbol...just a picture instead of a set of sounds. So yeah, it was...awkward and discomforting to Sunset, because in a sense they were basically dissecting HER.
She would have been about 5-6 in the flashback, so yes, she was several years younger than the young end of average for a pony to earn a mark. Its not impossible in rubicon, but it is rare for a pony so young to get one. Usually only a handful in any generation, and actually less common in unicorns than the other tribes.
And yes, that's exactly the vibe I was getting from Rarity. She's that friend, who reads horoscopes and gets her palm read at carnivals and such.

Your kind words are greatly appreciated, friend! Comments like this really make me and my two partners feel good about the story and our work, and inspire us to keep going, even when the words are a struggle. I do hope you continue to enjoy our foray into Sunset and her story, which I promise will include more about her relationship with Celestia. We wanted it to feel real, to feel organic, to have the characters feel like real people, with the kind of depth and emotion you'd find in real relationships. I hope we do not disappoint!
These little tidbits into pony culture are so fascinating, and get at something that doesn't get addressed enough in EG: Equestira and Terra are not the same culture.
Also, the scene with Pinkie at the end was really sweet.
This story is bloody fantastic.
That is.. deceptively deep. Well done, Pinkie.
You did a really good job of integrating the lore into the story. I didn't even notice while reading the chapter.
Your Pinkie Pie was also really good. This is the first time we've seen her perspective, is it not?
Caaaaaaaake. This has brought up a point I have always enjoyed debating. The Fate and Destiny vs. Free Will. I like that Sunset is starting to accept that even if it was meant to happen that she can still control the little things in life. People, well, people who don't act like sheep, want that choice.
Also, that AJ countryism at the start was great!
This was pleasing to read! I saw it update last night but I had to go to bed early cause I had work this morning. Though, once I got home I immediately got to reading. Lore was delivered, as promised. I like all this stuff about the cutie marks, and I am really glad to see a fic that really delves into it like that. They're probably not rare, but I haven't read any that I can remember that explain it quite like this
As for Pinkie, well, that sure was Pinkie! I'm not the best at writing Pinkie but her half seemed to silly, yet truthful, that I could definitely tell it was Pinkie. You have a way of making the narration different for each character that I really appreciate. Also Pinkie's whole thing about chocolate cake was really cute! Gosh, I love Pinkie.
Great!!!! I can't wait til next week aaaa

Yeah, I worked really hard with my writing team to map out the details of how things like biology, anatomy, psychology, and even the fact that ponies evolved as plains grazing, herd dwelling prey animals instead of small troop, omnivorous, tree and forest dwelling primates to say "how would that affect their cultural evolution. And when you add in the lack of certain prominent features that have shaped human culture over thousands of years, you get a very different picture. It doesn't always show as prominently because Sunset has a more "human" temperment, and has adapted over five years to living among humans undetected, but for a pony like Twilight, who has only visited, its meant to be a lot sharper of a contrast. As I've noted before, ponies are NOT humans in fursuits. They're unique and their own culture that has evolved its own way.
And I'm glad you liked the Pinkie half. I was super proud of how that turned out.

:} Thank you for the compliment!

Pinkie in a nutshell, if you listen to her ramblings. Most of the time its nonsense, but sometimes in the chaotic nonsense are these nuggets of truth that shine through, if you look close. I wanted to capture both the sort of chaotic nonsense, but leave this...weird sense of 'a method to the madness', as if there's more to Pinkie than we are able to really understand.
10953128
If you didn't notice I was feeding you lore, then I did it right. Its supposed to feel like part of the story, a natural part of character conversation. Not aimed at the audience.
10953293
The entire theme of the story is built on two things: Fate versus Choice, and Choice and Consequence. There's a reason its titled the way it is, and even more reason that if you pay attention, characters repeatedly and consistently come to these moments where they must choose which route to take--in essence, do they cross the Rubicon, or turn away?--which then has Consequences, good and bad, that ripple down the story, all while there is this undercurrent of 'are they really choices, or are they forgone conclusions?'
10953510
I'm not sure--i've not read every story out there, obviously. This is all based on my own take on cutie marks and how I interpret several key episodes from the show around them, coupled with a little bit of drawing on work that I did, once upon a time, in WoW RP with a character who would essentially give out "Name-songs" to his people that were...similar to marks: A distillation or manifestation of the truest essence of the individual and what made them who they are. It was something people really got into there, that they loved, and that I had a bit of a reputation for being exceptionally clever and scary accurate with.
Pinkie is...difficult most times for me. I wanted to capture both the zany chaos and the caring friend who embodies not just "funny haha," but a sense of hope and morale to her companions...
See you next week!

Glad to see youre enjoying still!
10955056
There are…later plans for the sirens. Dont want to spoil it yet.
10955704
There are, and many of them are uncomfortable/painful to consider. All will be revealed in time, bruhahah.
10956289
*evil smirk* and to think its really just getting started…hehehhe
Where did the next button go?
10958076
It will reappear on Friday! :}
10958318
But that's like three forevers away.
Well this took me a while to get through and I've enjoyed all of it so far. I stayed up far past my bedtime several day in a row because I didn't want to stop reading. Work's no fun when you're zonked, lol. Now I'll hop in line with everyone else to wait for the next chapter. Looking forward to more!
Hmm, fate and destiny are never the most fun things to think about. Especially if life has decided to take an extra large heap of manure on you when your choices seem not quite to matter. Still can't wait to see how some things play out. What I'm looking forward to is Sunset's talk with Shining.
oh yay! insightful but still bouncy pinkie is the best pinkie... she has a lot of potential, glad to see some utilization
