One thing I must say: I like how you have Sunset - even after several years living among humans - still be so out of her depth with human culture and its differences with Equestrian culture. It really drives home the differences between the two worlds.
on the one hand, lovely chapter, new friend made and reconciliation started!
on the other hand, every chapter that goes on is one more chapter that sparky is left in the dark and the suspense is killing me
That was really quite wonderful. As much as I disliked Flash at first, and still dislike the FlashSet ship (mostly due to the reason most people give for it essentially boiling down to "they used to date, so they should get back together"), he did grow on me as a character as time went on. Even if he was kinda generic, he was still a honestly good guy who I think could have been given more than a role as "inexplicable love interest for Twilight when she found herself in a ground-ape body."
I don't know if you've watched Glitch Techs, but it does exactly that sort of thing with the two main characters Miko and Hector. The two of them are very close friends, but it's entirely platonic. The creator's even gone on record as saying that he wanted to have them be close, but never become romantically interested in one another, because he wanted to show that boys and girls can be close friends without needing to throw a pointless romance into the mix.
This was a wonderful chapter to read and it got me out of a shallow depressive rut I've been in all day, also could you change 'nice guy flash' to something else when I read that my mind just jumped to niceguy from worm by wildbow and he was in the slaughterhouse nine and I don't want to remember how I got through that grimdark depressing story, of course that was in the notes so it didn't freak me out thinking flash was a murderer in story, just after
Still love your writing

Believe it or not this whole story originated as sort of a thought exercise comparing humans and ponies, with Sunset as "the outsider"--batting back and forth what things about being human would freak her out, which ones would confuse her, which ones would be utterly foreign, and how she would react. And through all the meandering and edits, its one of the things that me and my "creative team" have really wanted to keep, because we really liked it.

Oooo..Um...I have some bad news for you then....
10529282
I'm really glad you liked it. I never disliked Flash--I more disliked the role they created him for, because it didn't really...make sense, in context of the movie. Like I know what they were going for--standard teen movie drama has the romance subplot where the Mean girl's ex falls for female protagonist, and the mean girl gets hyper jealous because she's not over the ex. But...it was something that made no sense in this particular case, for two primary reasons: 1. Twilight the pony just...doesnt seem to do crushes/romance, especially in the first three seasons of FiM. She's about as romantically/sexually inclined as a rock, and most of the romantic drama is left to Pony Rarity. So Twilight getting "hot to trot" for the first male monkey she comes into physical contact with is...remarkably awkward and kinda feels OOC to me. And even bigger, 2. The lack of fucks Sunset gives. She clearly does not care if Flash is making eyes at Twilight. She's a bit busy trying to get a magic crown and take over Magical Pony Land, tyvm, and she never even interacts with Flash the entire movie. The only reason we know they have a history in the first movie is because RARITY tells Twilight and the audience. I think he would've served better without the romantic subplot as just "this nice, friendly guy who genuinely wants to help."
I'm not familiar with that particular show, but I can understand the sentiment. As someone who has always been "one of the guys" I've never understood this concept that men and women cannot be friends without attraction coming up ever. They totally can, I've been doing it for decades.

I'm glad the chapter helped your mood! It feels good to know that people look forward to reading my work!
As for the other bit...I have no idea what you're referencing, sorry.
10529386
Super glad to hear you like it! :} I hope you continue to enjoy it as you read through what's already up!
Thanks for the chapter! I was a little worried at first because I find Flash such a boring het-cis guy but you did a really good job with him.
10529436
ah fuck
i mean i expected to be left hanging at least until after new years, because sparky's on vacation
but like
the friendship games-equivalent or some other incident causing her to find magic can't be that far off... right??
(this is not a detriment to the story, far from it, but i do want poor sparky to know what's what sooner than later, and am looking forward to the fallout)

Im glad you liked it. To be honest, for me, sexuality and gender are character traits, just like being tall or having brown eyes or having a temper. They are facets of who a character is, and its only when you put all those little things together do you get a real person. I want my versions of the characters to feel like the characters people know, but real, with all the depth of a real person you might meet on the street. Flash is no different than any of the other characters in that regard, and I’m not going to waste all of the potential I see in him as a good character. Especially because each of these characters is influencing Sunset’s growth as a person.

Best romantic advice Ive ever given is “Dont be like TV.”
Seriously though? Yeah, relationship guru Cadence is one of the minor characters i love in this story, and believe me, i’ll be getting plenty of mileage out of her.
10529498
Sunset isnt on the spectrum—though both versions of Twilight are—its more that she is from a completely different species and culture, with vastly different taboos and stigmas, and she’s been emotionally and socially stunted due to external circumstances and events rather than any internal difficulties. She’ll get there eventually!
10529502
Part of me feels bad, but part of me laughed at your response. I promise, Arc 2 is going to blow everyone away, and itll be worth the wait...and the length.
10529528
Yes. The Rarijack is something she has clued in on, lol.
10529531
*grins*

Honestly, the reason I disliked him at first was because I couldn't separate him from the role they gave him. I can now, because he's been given a little more time to be, y'know, a character, and not window dressing. It comes down to me mostly disliking "obligate romantic subplots" in general. I'm a firm believer in "if it doesn't serve the story, don't include it." FlashLight in EG and RR didn't serve any purpose in the story, other than "we needed a romance here." Same with SciSpruce in LoE, except worse because that felt like Hasbro was going the nuclear option in trying to quash the SciSet shipping that came up after FG. They want a romance? Fine, include a romance. But make it relevant to the plot.
The best way I've found to describe it is Ghostbusters meets Men in Black, but with manifested video game characters that've "glitched" into reality. If you've got Netflix, I'd recommend checking it out. Its really good, in both writing and animation.
You handled this superbly. And yeah, I think Flash does get shafted a lot when it comes to story and screen time. There are plenty of characters that would ship well with him, but Sunset I think just doesn't and never did see him as more than a tool and means to an end. I really do love their dynamic as friends and can imagine Sunset in the future trying to help him with female advice or relationship questions... You know, once she gets her own house in order.
YESSSSS.
STUPID LITTLE VOICE RETURNS!!!!!!!
In all seriousness, love the chapter of was wonderful to Sunset and Flash build a friendship between them that is a healthy and now Sunset has someone to gush about Twilight with. So all the better. Without the possible danger of the girls fi doing out and her not telling them. I can't wait to see them meet. I honestly thought that Flash was Shining there and my anxiety shot through the roof. I was like what's she going to say. Anyways I loved the chapter and can't wait to see what you do next.
oh wow... I've been away from the fandom for over a year, but this was a gem to find my first time back in a while.
I've always loved the potential of the EQG story line, and this has incredible pacing and character development. The only thing frustrating me here is that I'm pretty sure Twilight never even gave Celestia the chance to read Sunset's last letter to her. I'm also waiting to see what is up with our favorite donkey the vampire hunter lol.
10529722
Yeah, I'm not keen on "forced romantic subplots," though my problem is that the forced romance ruins my immersion into the story and means I cant enjoy it as much. *grins* as for the Timber Spruce stuff in LoE, I always figured its to offset the fact that Sunset spends the entire movie acting like an overly worried girlfriend--stupid, because man they just could've leaned right into the Sciset dynamics and it would've worked great, and they wouldn't have had to shoehorn in a like-Flash-but-worse character.
I'll have to check out that show--well, once I get through Little Witch Academia and the Owl House. *adds it to the list of "things to watch"*
10529871
Yeah, plenty of characters would suit Flash better, I think, but I'm not sure I'll do any shipping with him. I tend to be leery of that, so if anything ends up happening, it will be a case of "the characters made the choice on their own, and I just had to go along with it."
10529974
Glad you liked the chapter, lol. And yes, there will be instances of Sunset going a mushy about her girl to Flash. I have -plans.-
10529987
Super glad to hear you liked it! Updates are weekly, at least until I run out of buffer, though I am taking December off because its too hectic a month for me. (Feel free to also check out the little one shot sidestory I wrote that involves Sunset's original arrival to the human world. Its called "Mirrors on the Ceiling." It takes place in the same universe as Rubicon.)
And you would be correct in that during the RR arc, Princess Twi did not show Celestia the note from Sunset. She was too much in a hurry to get the portal working, and she tunnel-visioned. Whether or not she showed her after? That...remains to be seen. There's a huge side story that's involved and will be written out about "what exactly is going on in Equestria" during some of this.
10529436
That's pretty cool. You've done a good job of it.
im wondering how long is this story going to be .are we going through all the movies or do you have your end point in mind .also will there be sequels to this or will it be self contained. besides the sidefics and most importantly .plese tell me where not close to done
10533005
*chuckles* I promise you, we're no where near done. I've posted all of the first story arc, and am in the "bridge between arc 1 and arc 2". I've been writing fairly steadily on arc 2 for the last few months--wrote another 2500 words yesterday, and recently discovered the hard limit on how long a google document can be. There's at least 4-5 arcs total, with these "bridges" between them. You'll be here a while.
10534016
hell yes im not leaving this train till the rides over
already 50 chapters what are you thinking 150 or so around there
10534641
Honestly, I'm not sure how many chapters it will end up being. As many as it needs to be, I suppose. :P Arc 2 is gonna have a lot of chapters, for example, because there's a lot going on.
I’m curious as to when the inevitable sunset and princess Celsestia reunion will happen and what it would be like. Especially with how Sunset feels about her and her own emotions. Especially since neither have told Twilight the full extent of their relationship nor has Sunset asked Twilight to give her any message.
One thing I was dissapointed with the movies is that they never fleshed out their relationship. They were apparently close with each other yet the first time their both on screeen they don’t really do much. Sunset just apologies and then Celestial helps her find information on the memory stone and that’s it. Nothing on what really happened between them or how they feel about each other.
So I really like how you have expanded their relationship and how things all went wrong.
Are you going to wait for the memory stone until their reunion or will they reunite before than?
10536418
So, after a lot of debate with my creative team, I'm actually going to be setting some stuff up with Princess Celestia and Sunset's eventual reunion as a side story that takes place in Equestria, because even if Princess Celestia is a close mouthed immortal, there are others fairly close to the two mares involved that are not so...well. You know how Celestia is. Right now, my plan is to finish the draft for Arc 2 so I can hand it to my editor, and while she's editing, get to work on the side story. I can say that the reunion will happen well before the memory stone, because I have something interesting in mind for the memory stone that is completely different from canon. *cackles*
10537219
That certainly sounds interesting. Be cool to see things forms Celestias perspective and how she feels about what’s being happening. There is probably a lot things that she wishes she could have done differently. Along with everyone else’s opinion on the matter.
On the Topic of the eventual reunion, I can see Sunset resentment/anger increasing a bit when it comes to her magic book. She knows the book works across worlds now and even if celestial didn’t know that she never tried, and yet despite their years apart Celestia never wrote anything to Sunset after she left. She also seems to have completely forgotten about it, as she apparently just tosses it in a pile of books to give to twilight. She wasn’t aware that sunset was contacting her, since the book started to vibrate when it got to Twilights palace. I can see Sunset being really upset about all that and wonder if she truly mattered to Celestia.
I’m looking forward to seeing what you plan on doing with the memory stone. From the sound of it it will be even more painful for everyone than it was before
Mmm, I'm not sure there's much I can say that others haven't already. From our exchanges you already know my thoughts on Flash as a character so anything else I can say it's beating a dead horse (pun intended), so the only thing left for me to say, is that this is a nice way for both of them to get closure and Flash acting as Sunset's male confidante is a good enough reason to keep him around, better than anything most fics and canon did.
