I'm not gonna lie this one hurt real deep, and I feel alot with her. It's sad that she does feel this way and hope Twilight can help her resolve through that. I'm not saying I cried...but also yes I did.
I was totally checking for this update all day, lol. Hope you're feeling better!!!
Stuff in the Sparkle household is always a good read so I enjoyed this chappy a lot. So looking forward to the games actually happening,
No tears from me over a light on. Though this story has got me teary eyed many, many times, not this time. Not that it didn't do anything. Although more the description of Twilight Velvet than that line specifically.
Scenes that always will do it are the scene in the principal's office where Dah reveals what she learned about the Sunset Shimmer hate group and even more so Princess Celestia's speech afterwards, Sunset Shimmer being taken care of at the Sparkles residence while sick and Velvet's call with Luna, Christmas at the Sparkles and Sunset getting a dedicated room there, Twilight bonding with her cousin at that awful family gathering and her standing up to her aunts just before that, Flash and Sunset burying the hatchet and she telling him about Twilight, Flash driving her home to the Sparkles after she fainted (though I really want some kind of scene where Flash is a dinner guest at the Sparkles or something, where they see what a good friend he is for her and they all bond over Sunset and their individual relationships with her), Twilight Velvet making sandwiches for Sunset, cooking her favourite meals etc., Fluttershy getting Luna after seeing Sunset scrubbing the locker and the scenes in the principal's office just after that. And many many more.
I can't remember if you've commented on this in the past, but are we going to get more time with Principal Celestia and her story that you kind of hinted at/started way back?
When I saw this chapter jump straight to Twilight's house, I was like "wait, what?" Then I figured the conversation was gonna be covered by retelling, flashbacks, or both.
The dichotomy between Twilight and Sunset's team situations is interesting. You got Twilight, who doesn't want to be on the team, most of the student body might not want her on the team, yet is forced to participate by Cinch, then you got Sunset, who feels obligated to her restrictions, feels uneasy about being on the team, but the student body wants her not only on the team but to lead it, and she's given a choice by the principals, who keep her other obligations in mind.
As long as it doesn't involve an oven, I think you're fine Sunny-buns.
Hard to accept forgiveness when you don't believe you deserve it, but then again, some steps are harder than others, the Day Sunset loves herself as much as her friends love her will be an amazing day.
Maybe one where Daydream will appear?
The waterworks got me way earlier than Velvet's line. Sunset's reaction to the petition and letters hit me like a ton of bricks, even though I was expecting it. Scenes like that always get me really bad. Triumph after adversity, self worth issues pile-driven by heartfelt gestures of support, that kind of thing ruins me. I can't count how many times I've been watching a movie and burst out sobbing at the 'hero moment'. I get a lot of funny looks at theatres People that know me think it's cute and that I need therapy.
Funny thing is, I can see a world where Sunset turns this down. It's not what I'm expecting, but I wouldn't bat an eye. Especially if Twilight lets Sunset know that she's on the opposing team, which I don't think she has yet.
Sorry to hear about the physical issues. I know exactly what you mean about the humidity making the bad days practically unbearable
The light on is a comforting thought. More than most realize or appreciate at a young age.
When I was a teen and old enough to stay out later my mother reassured me of two things. The front door chain won't be up and the light will be on. Even if she passed out and could not wait up. She wanted us to know that no one would be forgotten and locked out of the house. You touched on that comfort twice with the moment where Sunset was thinking about the key she had been given and then Velvet's comment about the light. It is important for someone who is always afraid that they will be betrayed by everyone and kicked out at any given moment.
No, they are not fooling Mama. MOM OF THE HOUSE SEES ALL. Mmmmm chooooocolate..
While we knew what she would ultimately decide it was enjoyable to see her weigh it. The character growth of going through the toil of "I do not deserve this after what I did." As in many things it is when you feel you do not deserve something is when you have earned it the most.
Everyone deserves forgiveness and second chances.... at least once.

All some very interesting thoughts...

That was the joke

Sunset definitely had some issues. No one goes from being the terrible horrific bully to the sweet and compassionate character we see without there being some serious issues behind the bully attitude in the first place.
Curse those onion ninjas, right?

...To be fair, on one hand, the hypocrisy is supposed to be there. The parallels between Twilight "coming out" about liking her own gender and Sunset "coming clean" about being a magical unicorn from another dimension are deliberate. On the other hand, there is also the question of scale. Sunset's secret doesnt just affect her life. It technically affects an entire world; tell the wrong person about it, for example, and she puts her homeworld at risk from unscrupulous humans. Twillight dating a girl...pretty much doesnt affect anyone but Twilight and her immediate circle--her holding hands with or kissing Sunset, despite what some bigots might say, will not bring about Armageddon.

Yeah, I honestly debated delaying the chapter but that's not fair to the readers...and I try to take my writing seriously. Which means treating it more like I would a job than a hobby, which means not being irresponsible.
Soft fluffy chapters are some of my favorite to write.
The Games are not going to be what you expect...and I think in the end it might blow your mind. >:}

If I can affect a readers emotions then I've done my job, as far as I'm concerned. I've made people feel things, and in a way, that's the entire point of the story. To make you step out of yourself and FEEL with the characters and for the characters. :}

I have a couple of side stories planned involving one or both Celestias. I'm just a bit focused on the main story right now.
The plan is to finish Cross the Rubicon: Choices, then work on a couple of the important sidestories, which includes:
"Supernova": Some shit going down in Equestria involving several Princesses, a dragon, and the fall of Sunset Shimmer.
"Memories of the Little Sun": An anthology like series of flashbacks and memories of Sunset's early life as a filly, many from Celestia's PoV
"Dancing on the Sun": A dual backstory piece for both Celestias showing both the parallels and the differences between them.
"From Always to Forever": The Rarijack piece that I started working on back in like...Chapter five.
After those are done, I'll get to work on the second half of Rubicon, with "Cross the Rubicon: Consequences." Which will be...probably just as gargantuan as the first half. Maybe. A lot of that is still in outline stages.

Yup! That's on purpose. In point of fact, Sunset and Twilight have experiences that are meant to be sharply contrasting in a weird way. While Sunset's life with school and friends and stuff is getting better, Twilight's is getting worse in a lot of ways.

Sunset doesnt need an oven. She's that hot on her own.
*grins at the bad joke*
11639662
She has a long way to go.
11639667
*gives tissues* Yeah, that was a pretty emotional scene to write. This whole chapter kind of was.
We actually debated for about a week on whether or not Sunset would accept the position on the Team. It was pretty up in the air until the last minute, when this chapter came together. (Sometimes it takes longer to hash out a chapter or a plot point than it does for me to actually write the damned thing.)
And yes, pain days suck.
11640263
Yes, exactly this. The idea that you will always have a place to go, no matter what happens or how bad it gets is powerful, and in this case, it was so much more than literal--there's a metaphor both Velvet and Sunset are aware of on different levels, and for Sunset, who has literally fallen into some of the darkest places a soul can go, the concept of a light she can count on is powerful in ways that cannot be explained to someone who has never felt like they were lost and alone in the darkness.
Yup. Mom knows. Mom sees.
Like I mentioned previously, Sunset's participation was...very up in the air until this chapter was coming together.
And yes. People who are legitimately sorry for something they've done wrong and want to make it better deserve that second chance. But part of that is that they actually are sorry, and that they do their best to grow and learn from the mistake. The problem is people who pay lip service to being sorry, and people who don't actually learn from it. They just keep doing it again and again with no change.
