And so we meet Shining and Cady. Sunset's flashback does highlight some lingering issues she's got, and a lot of bitter resentment still festering in her heart. Hopefully getting to know human Cady helps her with that.
Sunset's little freakout at the beginning shows just how much she cares for Twilight, but also shows some potentially concerning levels of co-dependence. Then again, considering Twi's the only friend she feels completely comfortable around, it's not that surprising.
That flashback was pretty interesting. It shows Sunset wasn't quite gone full-on "hateful bitch" yet, and it was only the later new of Cadance's adoption that soured things between them.

Our dear Sunset doesnt just have issues. The girl’s got subscriptions—and a long way to go before she works through all of them.
As for “co-dependence”...It could very easily develop that way if pushed wrong. Sunset and Twilight did form a bond and a connection under a circumstance when both were incredibly emotionally vulnerable, and Sunset is still in a very precarious emotional position—feeling isolated and mostly alone—and when coupled with her personality (fire and passion), it can lead some very bad places if handled poorly.

Im very much a believer that the bulk of people are not born as hateful monsters—events and experience shape them. (Psychopaths aside, obviously)
Sunset is no different, and given the drastic changes in her presented personality, its not hard to see that bitchy sunset was an angry, lonely child trying to measure up to a nearly impossible goal, one she didnt entirely understand. Look at what sets her off in the first movie—she’d lost, and even given up when pony twi wouldnt give her the crown. It wouldve ended there...but when the girls praised twilight for being so noble and even comment “its no wonder youre a princess”, she snaps.
Thats a huge part of the story, in and of itself: picking apart and understanding Sunset as a person, not just the what but potential whys. Why does she do this? What caused it in the first place? In my experience, knowing why is always going to be more important than knowing what, because when you know why, you gain insight.
And it wont be just Sunset, long term. Ive got psychological profiles detailed up on most of the main, major, and even minor characters. There will be glimpses into the psyches of others.
