cadence pov!
oh gosh, the doe eyes *cough* pony eyes comment is great! luna like "yeah keeping this a secret, sure thing, but also some species appropriate language is funny"
oh geez, "everything is fine and cinch is a fantastic person" is a horrifying bit of magic, ouch
and oh hey, sunset's ready to throw hooves, that's uh, not great?
oh dear
Woah woah woah! Back up Shining Armor! You are way out of line! How dare you disrespect your parents like that! Seriously, did that darkness infecting Twilight spread to Shining too? Twilight we know is affected by whatever dark magic Cinch sicked on her, plus the tunnel vision so once again, she's absorbed by her energy project. But Shining? Is this guy just just not all there that he's blindly defending Cinch and CPA by supporting Twilight?
Luna's little outburst practically got Celestia involved.
And there go Sunset's pony noises. At least she has an excuse. Twilight's merely imitating Sunset at this point.

Cinch has pretty obviously hexed CPA and ex-CPA students to reflexively defend herself and, by extension, the school as a whole, and Sunset sees it (perhaps even literally). Question is, does she know how to break the enchantment?
Diablo!
I honestly thought when Sunset finally broke her silence there was going to be a thunder clap or flash of light they would all have to rationalize. Hey, even the best families fight. Now they just have to figure out why and move forward.
Okay, that sounds like Cinch has some sort of geas on the Sparkle siblings. Either that or there's been some more mundane, subliminal programing going on. Because the fact that they so readily defend her with everything they have and instantly shift to "attack" mode really doesn't inspire confidence that Cinch isn't up to something.
And then there's Sunny's reaction. Something's setting her off. Hard. And I don't just think it's flashbacks to her and Celestia.
11191614
Yeah, but what about Cadence? She went to CPA as well (unless hanging out with Luna and her criticisms somehow broke the hold on her)
Da heck? I get Twilight, well, I mean, there are various explanations there... But I'm absolutely baffled by Shining here.
11191542
Luna is allowed her moments of humor, hahah. A lot of people are going to get some mileage out of the "Sunset is a horse" joke.
And yes...Something unpleasant is going on, and whatever it is, Sunset clearly does NOT like it.
11191548
11191614
Dark powers are definitely at play, and Shining DID graduate from CPA, after all. Perhaps there's something to that.
11191733
*cackles gleefully* No, Lightning and thunder have never been her element. We all know our little unicorn is fire based. Brace yourself though, its not over yet.
11191746
Fae are tricksy bastards, aren't they? *gives a cookie*
And no, Sunny does not like this at all. Someone is a very grumpy little unicorn.
11191766
Hmm. Cadence seems to be a fly in the ointment, doesn't she? Maybe the answer lies in who she is, and how her pony counterpart has handled similar evils.
11191887
Fae are tricksy bastards, and Shining is a CPA alumnus. He spent four years in Cinch's domain.
11191912
I take it you're possibly referring to how then-pegasus Cadence dealt with that pony sorceress in that book Twilight and the Crystal Heart Spell?
I look forward to this update every week. But now I gotta wait another week.
11192023
Every. Single. Time!
Interesting that Shinning would be triggered but not Candace. Something about her counterpart helping her fight the geas or was Shining a bit more standout then she knew back in high school?
Now, how on earth is Sunset going to inform them about what is going on without letting them know what is going on? She could probably brake the enchantment on Shining and Twi, though the one on Twi might not be as strong, Twi is already more like this thinking its the better school and therefor she should go there. Shining on the other hand is being forced hard right now. But how does she do it without braking either Shining or her cover?
And just how much more pushing is that school going to be able to do before she just decides to burn the whole place down?
Did she just fail to neigh at him?
11191912
Also, don't think I didn't notice Shining's remark about "Cinch cooperating when a kid goes missing." Because if it's a regular occurence, anyone not under her control would see that as a major red flag.
11191923
Among other things in canon.
11192023
11192058
Yes, but this way you get regular updates, instead of lots of story followed by long stretches of "is the author dead?"
11192149
Everyone is different, and has different strengths. Different weaknesses. The things that make Cadence who she is...perhaps they have an affect on such things.
As for Sunset, I guess you'll just have to tune in next week to see how she handles this.
*hums Burn It Down*
11192242
*angry Horse Noise*
11192506
*sips cocoa* I rather thought you might catch things like that.
11192506
Ah, can't believe I missed that. Probably explains why Shining is going off so much. He might not have stood out that much while in school, but as a cop Cinch would need to use this kind of influence, probably has her hooks in at lest half the precinct.
11192520
oh I don't mind waiting for each Thursday update. But it's a good story so it drags you in and then as soon as you're fully invested it hangs you over a cliff.
All the same, such an endless drama and cliffhangers come better when you read the work in its entirety and do not wait a week for a new chapter, the effect is better, more whole. I also want to praise the smoothness of the narrative, but it's a pity that because of it, social action is more than physical.
Someone punch the brainwashing out of Shiny.
Catching up on this story is really rough. It's pretty good overall, but a bit contrived at points. Sunset's convenient inability to sense or recognize dark magic at important story points is pretty grating when it's a literal plot point that she's hypersensitive to it in the siren arc. Also it being pointed out repeatedly that she's a Twilight level genius, even describing herself as someone that makes frequent and accurate intuitive leaps, but never actually doing anything like that in the story. It also gets a little tiring reading yet another story where the primary antagonist is poor communication skills. I mean, I know it's essentially a teen drama, so that's expected. From the teens.
"Shining Armor, you're a cop, that contract's illegal. Justify your defense of it without attacking me instead."
"Well shit Mom, I can't."
"Okay, so there's actually something wrong with you. Why don't you take a few minutes to figure your shit out while we explain to Twilight that without our permission, that they still haven't even ATTEMPTED to obtain, that contract could be signed in blood and it still wouldn't legally exist."
Twilight: "I actually did bleed on it a bit by accident."
Sunset: "You fucking wot, mate?"
All that aside, the world building is extensive and pretty detailed. Character interactions are consistently good. The actual plot is interesting, even if as I mentioned before the actual mechanics of it are a teeny bit contrived at times.
Decent read so far, more than a few scenes caught me leaking. I'll try to contain myself til I catch up from here on.
Well, one more thing I guess. Literally I'm making a guess now, which I'll spoiler on the off chance I'm right.
I'm half convinced at this point that Sunset's actually originally a human, specifically Principal Celestia's daughter, whom through some ridiculous series of events human Celestia' thought had died but actually made her way into Equestria as a baby.
If I'm right, kudos, it's a great angle. If not, ah well.
Edit*
Of course the very next chapter at least partially addresses my contrivance issues
This is why I try not to comment much while catching up on a story
