What a good chapter!!
Can't wait for more!!
The government is worried about biomancers going evil or working against the crown, while at the same time taxing them at really high rates....
The ending leaves me feeling like something is about to happen. Something nopony is gonna like.
I agree with Cure's dam on the test results. Those will turn some heads. YOUNG Biomancer scores way too high on tests would have me thinking he messed with his brain if I were in charge of keeping an eye on him.
Watch. After all the insistence that Cure's overreacting, Deed comes home either under armed guard escort by order of Celestia, or personally escorted by Celestia herself because it gives her an excuse to take Cure's measure, Deed having sought refuge in the palace following an altercation where some changeling gatherers disguised as royal guards tried to abduct him after sensing the fountain of love he is for his big family.

NGL,I was half expecting the Henry Blake twist* from M*A*S*H mid chapter, and I'm still not entirely convinced a tragedy might not still be in Cure's relatively immediate future. Things've been going too well for him, y'know?
I'm complaining about this one. First new non-pony scan and it's just mentioned in passing, none of the new things he learned from the new species or how they compared to pegasi or anything. Might be planned for later though.
I think it's actually the first time he's even gotten to speak to a griffon and it was off camera!
That first line was great though. “THIRTY FUCKING THOUSAND BITS?!” and they did eventually get him to calm down.
11473445
Doesn't seem to be them in particular, just anyone making over x amount.
I don't think he needs one by any means but with his ability he could probably talk tia into a full tax exemption if he tried.
11473467
So? The biomancer bit is way more interesting than someone getting a perfect score on a test, this makes him even more interesting but only very marginally more than he was before.
Awesome chapter! 😄
I can't wait to see what cure does with the griffon scan and their mitochondria.
I assume that on a magical level they are comparable to a mix of a pegasus and an earth pony; I don't know if I read it it this fic or some other, but if their magic makes their claws sharper, could Cure use it to make an actual blade out of his TK field?
Also, does Cure keep some journal with all his findings or something? I imagine that one day he would want to spread information about non-unicorn magic and other stuff to the public.
I guess we'll know if deed needed that stuff next chapter, I assume
Fully armed, enhanced Deed is a go... May celestia have mercy on anypony that tries to harm him, may celestia have mercy on all of them if one succeed and have Cure going on revenge
As usual, great chapter... I can expect that one of the first things Cure asks Celestia when they do meet is tax reduction, no foal should ever pay that much tax

The intersection of nearly impossibly high test scores with biomancy is a significantly higher threat than either one. It strongly implies the (actually mostly false in this case) biomancer is messing with their own brain. At that point, you aren't dealing with a pony anymore, but something alien(which is actually true). This increases the threat level tremendously. Even in the case that the assumption isn't true, a tremendously smart powerful villain would be far more dangerous than a dumb-as-bricks powerful villain, both in scope and subtlety.
----
As for taxes, It doesn't matter if it hits anyone who is making a lot of bits (note that is different from rich -- high taxes prevent people from becoming rich as opposed to the moneyed staying that way). It is essentially a matter of perception. Your typical biomancer(that doesn't self-terminate) will manage to monetize it, will come from a random background(typically not a high tax bracket), and will have their first tax experience be taxing.
Liam Neeson moment next chapter- I will find you and I will kill you
Assumed Cure would be the one to get with the teacher or at least one of his clients someday, ah well.
11473542
But if he wasn't smart he'd have already accidentally killed himself with his power so the test scores shouldn't be much of a surprise.
----
Even if they took half he'd still become very rich so it doesn't look like high taxes are going to be able to prevent him from becoming rich.
IIRC in the story there have been other biomancers but they either don't survive very long or weren't skilled enough to be in any way comparable. If there had been i'd assume they would be able to get some sort of goodwill tax credit or something for their work helping ponies automatically but as there's like no others alive it's never been enough of an issue to legislate.
I'm sure there would also be more to their handling than oh you have to register as a restricted magic user and someone will check up on you and more like wow we've been looking for someone with your talent for a while here's an invitation to extensive gov't paid for training on your abilities and if you agree to serve the crown for x years you'll be granted xyz and a tax exemption.
Sure taxes are taxing but when you can pay taxes and still have money to burn so what? and it seemed like they got him talked down to that point part way through the chapter by pointing out just how much he was making.
No competent biomancer is going to be poor by any measure taxes or not.
awesome chapter, i just love cure's humor
would't it be funny if deed gets incarcerated because of all that armament
overkill much cure
it sound's like cure has trauma issues from ed's memory's
I can just see Cure "dealing with" whatever idiots cause trouble for his sire, and then getting called out on it by some officious moron. To pull a quote from (RHJunior's HiE-deconstruction) Darth Vulcan:
"Community service"
Is that way the kids are calling it these days?
Admittedly he is cute but not his name
What if the hotel has a spa? I'm sure that's not the kind of "facial" the customer ordered

Mmm, there could be an argument that he's just really smart. Prodigies have always existed. And by his own admission, half that exam was merely memorization that any pony with photographic memory could pass easily.
The worrying bit is if somepony gets curious... They start looking into Cure and those around him. Then put the various testimonies and evidence together. It's been a slow burn up to now but taken all at once in a detailed report; that'll raise some eyebrows right off the face.
p.s. I really hope Dad isn't accosted by the guard after he sets off ALL the detectors, I mean, he's a walking arsenal of magic items. Talk about overkill!
I wonder what trouble Deed may get into. Hopefully no-pony is taken, and Cure doesn't have to go all "Liam Neeson" on Canterlot.
Awesome chapter as usual.
Good chapter!
Chekov’s gun. Implications re all the boosts. Up to and including Dawn taking two to the chest but the silk saves her.

Not really a fan of the concept. Makes stories too predictable. Little additions that are there just to be there can make stories better.
Thanks for the update!
his paranoia is showing.... i mean.... he is preparing for war, i don't think anyone is going to try to get deed. but wouldn't it bee hilarious to see them try? or the moment of realization that they have indeed 'just fucked up.'
How the heck would ponies make faux leather
Just had an idea... Deed is in canterlot, some pony tires to rob him... "Your bits or your life", deed sitting down and rubbing his tamples "cure is going to have a blast saying I told you so... Mr robber, do you mind not doing this?" The other pony taking a knife out "your money or your life", deed powering his magic and stumping a hole in the ground "do we really need to do this?" Only to see the dust trail of the other pony
Back home, telling the family the event only to have cure get an unnatural wide smile and deed telling him "don't... Just don't", innocent cure colt looking smug as a mad man.... "Told you so"
Alot of flags have been raised this chapter.
Though I am surprised you glossed over him scanning the gryphon.
Also Cure, pay your damn taxes for the common good. Be grateful it's a banded/progressive system and not a flat rate.
It would be interesting to see Cure given a genuine reason to get mad.
I'm really waiting for the plot to take off, so far I'm loving the SoL parts. Something tells me that there's gonna be some angst happening, I also can't wait for Celestia to meet Cure, that'll be fun to read especially when she learns he can make working limbs...
11473774
Fixed. Thanks! I've complained about it many times. The program I use inexplicably changes Cure to Cute sometimes. Annoying! I shoulda just gone with Cute Wave instead. He could have his mom's colors, a teddy bear as a cutie mark, and his special talent would be to make mares unable to resist fawning over him. ... LFaW Discontinued! Now I just need a title. Cute Colt Conquers Capital!
11473511
Cure started with a physical journal for his Trees. The memory trick negates the need, though. I think he's probably too paranoid to keep a journal about his findings that he woudln't want anyone else finding like the whole "yeah I could totally give everypony wings and an autocasting horn and they would work" thing.
Several folks wanted to know what he got from a griffon. It'll show up in 47, not because of complaints, but because he would have to convert an appreciable amount of cells before he would know for sure. If you recall, he scanned Drift in like... chapter 11? He didn't know what the pegasi ability could really do until like 20 chapters later.
11473960
I agree. I try to include a lot of details that aren't necessarily important for some worldbuilding purposes and just because sometimes I wonder "how would this work in magic pony land?" I'm glad you enjoy it!
11475740
In my defense, the first line of the story description (the long one) starts "The goal here is to mainly have a SoL story", so I hope that if/when the "action" parts finally show up they're not too disappointing. Most OP MC stories have said MC either make stupid decisions, act irrationally, or arbitrarily "fight at the opponent's level" for lack of a better way to say it. I believe it would be highly out of character for Cure to do this, especially given he's pointed out a few times where weird coincidences happen and he suspects destiny/fate/the world are just effing with him.
Honestly wondering if a situation where cure donates an organ he can grow would affect his taxes
That anecdote from basic was inspired. Incredible, even.
It reads just like the stories you hear about human drill instructors and their inventive and hilarious punishments.
You can't expect some financial bureaucrat to be able to adequately appraise a plant, Cure. Especially a hitherto undiscovered, mutant, pharmacological plant.
Cure needs to get appropriately-qualified experts to weigh in and have the valuation appealed.
If he's willing to accept the spike in notoriety.

True
11477247
Then that means his opponents have to come up to his level. Like Tirek getting ahold of his powers and going hog wild.
I love the biomancee stuff. Would be cool to see cure get to prototype levels of mixed magic and biominupulation. I bet he could make some sort of spatial storage for biomass filled with special biomass mixture so he could regen anything in seconds and stay alive without food for a suuuper long time. Heck in a pinch he could be a living food replicator if he was ever trapped somewhere isolated that had no food. Also Im really looking forward to more action. You do it really well
If I had to guess, the T would be "Therapeutic"
11657176
Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation
From that, I could easily see:
Captain of the Guard: "So, you're telling us you had no intent to attack the Princess!?"
Deed: "Well, I know for a fact that it's not hard to impersonate a Guard with just some fake armor. How hard would it be to impersonate Princess Celestia?"
CotG: "Seriously!?And just how might somepony impersonate the Princess!? "
Deed: "My son could do it easily. And if he can, anypony might be able to."
CotG: ""
Deed: "Besides, she attacked me, first."
CotG: "And what supposedly brought on this attack from the Princess?"
Deed: "It was when I offered to buy the castle out in the Everfree Forest--I told her I could take it off her hooves as a fixer upper."
CotG: ""
Im sorry But if i made like 90k and the IRS is trying to take 30k, i'd be fighting the IRS like.

Gotta admit, I've been loving this story.
BUT!
SO MANY Chekov's Guns just laying around, I'm surprised there hasn't been an accidental shooting!
Seems like Every Chapter, there's at least one innocuous little comment that could turn the story Dark REAL fast.
The amount of times I've seen a character comment "Man, if anything bad ever happened to <Insert one of Cure's Friends/Family Here>..."
Still, loving the story, hope to see more!
Time doesn't even really work like that regardless, but it's pretty moot anyways.
So much for lying low, colt is practically begging to be seen. 😈
