Attack the darkness!!
Well, having a mob boss grandpa that likes you, sounds like it might be a pretty safe position to be in, to me.
You know Cute has talked about immortality like it's a possibility, but he already has it right now. He can just set each cell in his or anyone's body back to a previous scan, this resetting the length of their telomeres to whichever scan he used. He could also store neurons firing patterned instructions to regrow the damaged parts of his brain in case of head trauma stopping a subconscious signal relayed to the brain and back. Not sure he could stop information loss in that event though. Can't wait to see what cool stuff he does!
11422819
Maybe, but you would have to revert the brain as well, which would presumably erase memories. Until he has a good idea on how to do safe brain modification, there will be limits. But yea, he can fix most aging issues already

All the warning signs turned out to be a bluff for the most part to me. That line about Brick being more like a very grizzled Clint Eastwood conjured up a far more potent image than a generic "mob boss", heh. You do not want to buck with this pony.
Looking to the far-flung future, I wonder if Cure will observe (from a distance!) Sunset Shimmer and her downfall leading to Twilight taking over as the prodigal student? I know he's rightfully wary about mucking up the storyline so no spoilers for Celestia I'd imagine.
...unless he was the source for Celestia's "amazing prophetic talent"? Gotta be careful not to say too much.
(I bet River Song feels the same when traipsing around with Dr.Who)
awesome chapter
poor dawn they are so cute together
some hornheads are just too uppidy and there are the paranoid earth pony's xD
Just finished reading this story this morning... and then you go and drop another 15k words on me? When I thought I was gonna have to wait forever?!
Amazing story bro, love every chapter so far and I eagerly await what's next.
I found a few small errors so I'm doing my part to polish this chapter a bit:
they're
Solar / Solar's knees
Other than that, great chapter and I'm really loving this story
I wonder, how much industrialisations would Cure introduce? Would the Changelings in your universe have some kind of hivemind and cause Cure to turn it into an internet, memes included?
I am curious about the physics part of the world they live in; can Cure live in space where there is no air and it could violently evacuate blood and air from all holes?
Either way, I wonder what Cure's costume would look like and what his Hearths Warming gift would be. I am kind of envisioning that Cure understands a little late the scope of body horror he is commiting!
I just made the connection from the enchanting gems to Path of Exile's skill gems, or whatever. It feels like something I'd have noticed before, but I'm too lazy to go and look. I suspect cure would be able to afk anywhere in uberlab with just some mana regen gear.

I played PoE for like... 2 hours once. I didn't get into it. I have plans for the gems and enchanting that I probably won't touch on until Cure is an adult, but, as is the typical pattern with an OP MC, the bullshit will be epic. Not because I'm like "oh he needs to be more OP" but more along the lines of "this is absolutely something Cure would think of". Of course it won't likely matter much story-wise, but a lot of the fun is "can you do X?" and then trying it. The answer is "maybe".

I may need a little help with the lore here. I know changelings are typically portrayed as having some kind of collective, but in canon there was not ever any implication that they truly have a hive mind, is there? Just maybe they behave more "hive-mindedly" like how bugs will happily allow themselves to die for the hive... Right? I have ideas for them but, as I've said before, I tend to change gears sometimes and would prefer not absolutely stomp on canon lore too much more than I already plan to.
11422846
Right, we don't want to overwrite memories. That's probably a pretty sensitive subject to someone like Cure.
11423090
Thanks, fixed.

I'm appalled at the baseless accusation that Brick is anything but a legitimate business pony. Shame on you for slighting the honor of a retired soldier!
Noticed a minor typo.
Arcane
The idea of scanning the bark to memorize spells is quite interesting. I don't think I would ever have come up with that from Cure's power set. Now I can picture a fully established Cure buying up a printing company and supplying them with living sheets of bark to run a copy or two of all the books they print that he might want to memorize. Cure is definitely the biggest cheater to have ever cheated!
This is really turning out to be a great story.

It's a shame that a lot of the fun builds don't come online until you're done the acts

I'll try and list them as I remember!
Inference from show canon: the queen's word is gospel, no hive mind, subsists on emotion only, lacks cultural identity, militaristic, and last but not least, walk on walls and ceilings.
Based on multiple changeling fan fiction headcanons:
The queen's rulership is usually suffocatingly, iron gripped. In the early days, Chrysalis was tended to be viewed as a mother, literally and/or figuratively, to her changelings. At least, until the episode where they rounded up the equestrian royalties and the mane six. She literally attempted to publicly execute Thorax by eating his love. From then on, many finally got to understand her personality unfortunately.
They have a hive mind. Since their introduction, it has been a popular headcanon even till now. In some stories, they are connected to the hivemind 24/7, always constantly buzzing.
In some, their queen can talk long range (Badlands to Ponyville). Few are like node based; their language and complex problem solving are cloud based (like the now defunct Stadia) and need constant connection.
Few believes that there is a love drain whenever they talk in the hivemind. Some believes that it is like a discord call where users can connect to anyling locally. Some imagined that the hivemind is where all the data is stored at; history and such. Many believes that only changelings can utilize the hivemind.
Some don't believe in the hivemind, but rather, they exude pheromones instead.
They only eat emotions. Some say that they can subsist with insects and meat, but would lack the ability to perform magic without the emotions. Few believe they depend on emotions line a battery; they die really fast without emotions.
A some believe that love is a body enhancer, allows them to perform super-equine feat. Some say it is like an addiction they cannot live without. Few believe they are born as the Flutterponies, or other equine-likes, that are subjected to love deprived curse.
The changelings lack culture. Personally observed: in the episode where Ocellus returned to school, mentioned that her family took Hearth's Warming instructions too literally, having no idea what it means and stand for. Most fics tend of have a militaristic kind of culture.
They are militaristic. They are shown moving in formation in the hive before they knew there were infiltrators. In most fic, you have to obey the higher ups. In many fics, they are drones. In some, they even have infiltrators and soldier roles on top of drones.
In quite a number, drones are replaceable. In many, there are commanders under Chrysalis. Some believes the infiltrator, soldiers, and commanders are just as replaceable as drones. Many believe they are nursery hatched, fought in a Survival TV esque series kind of life and death, then go on as the apex of the surviving nymphs.
Many still, believe they are all child groomed soldiers from the start.
These are my observations from what I remember reading from writers to artists and inferencing from the show. I hope this could help you.
Thanks for the update!
I will be totally honest the idea of scanning the spells did not occur to me. That’s actually pretty cool.
11423537
Something I have seen done for changelings is that they separate the eggs from the parents to prevent favoritism when rationing food to the young.
I also think that Chrysalis was more stuck in her ways for doing it for hundreds of years, to her the change was sudden and their are videos that explain how she felt threaten by the idea of losing her place in the hive.
Awesome chapter! Much enjoyed
I love this story. So much universe building!
I like your magic system. I think it makes the most sense of any explanation I've seen in the fandom. Most people just say "it's magic" and be done with it. You are creating rules that span direct use and enchanting, and how they are similar and different. It's fascinating reading about it.
Then you are able to tell us the difference between how earth ponies use magic and unicorns more directly use it through Cure being able to directly compare. It makes me wonder what you have in store for pegasus magic.
Deeds was able to pull the max weight by circling magic and using his TK on the floor for extra grip. I'm curious how something like that would work... for example, pulling a heavy cargo wagon stuck in a sand dune. Would Deed be able to pull it while on sand? Would the TK field fail because there's nothing solid to "grab" onto?
I love Brick. Even though things seem nefarious, I like his how he protects his family. I hope we get to learn more about him and his "business."
I'm actually a little disappointed that we skipped over this. I would have loved to see more teasing and how Dawn "flipped the script."
This is a great chance to exercise "romance" writing skills. Then again, they are still pretty young. But if you time-skip a year or two, we better see the teasing.
Interesting that Dawn's dam is a huge racist bigot. It makes me wonder why their unicorn family lives in a town full of earth ponies.
I'm looking forward to the next chapters a couple weeks from now.
And as always, thank you for posting.
11423537
Another couple of things about changelings is that they were implied to be given personal time by the fact that Thorax was allowed to play with dolls even if he was made fun of for it.
I also like to think that changelings have to spin their interest in ways that are useful to the hive.
Like fans of fans of art replacing individuals who would go to art showcases and claim that it is to collect love from a large group of creatures.
Seems like it might be interesting. I'll give it a look-see when I can
I just found and read this entire story so far, and I have to say I really enjoyed it! I know some people don't like the musings on biology and physics, but I didn't find them grating at all. The prose holds the story up and I couldn't see any inaccuracies as I read. The ideas for the magic mitochondria are unique, as are the mechanics behind the horns. I also haven't seen a human in a pony body handled this way before, and it's really novel, I feel. While I personally feel a little weird with his young self discussing sexual matters, I think you handle it well to avoid any real squickiness. All in all, I think you've done a good job and I'm excited to see more! Honestly it's making me want to shake off my rust and actually write some of my own material properly, I feel quite inspired
You know, I was just thinking about this, but does Cure know about Chameleons and how their microscopic color changing structures work? It feels like he could absolutely make good use of that and the ability to effectively camouflage. Then again, I'm sure there are likely spells for invisibility. Then again, maybe having a non-magical alternative for stealth could be optimal in certain circumstances, too, such as if someone were specifically screening an area for someone using invisibility magic.
I'll try to get on my computer later to give you a right proper review, but I agree with many others, this story is just downright amazing! The world building, the jokes, the teasing, innuendos, and the actual fictional knowledge that you have put genuine thought into is just downright great! I don't typically read stories like this, but this is definitely one of the better stories I have read!
11426829
He can change his color on his own already in a much more effective way. And chameleons are not actually as impressive as media likes to say they are.
11427240
I just think that adding guanine crystals to his skin or coat hairs could help to make his color changing abilities more effective. I dunno, in either case, it was just something I had thought about in the middle of the night after a dream, so it's not that important. That said, I wonder if he could somehow make his tail prehensile, while I'm thinking of chameleons... Though, that is maybe a little silly. Who's to say, for now?
I loved this story and a really hope it doesn't die, does anyone have any suggestions about good stories that are similar to this one
Accidental upload?

Jumping in at the deep end by Anotherrandom

Ya know. I had a whole plan set up for today to start playing a new game I got. Then I started reading this, and I just can't stop reading now lmao you've got me completely and utterly hooked on this story.
11557128
I know that feeling. I haven't put any time into my own gaming for the past week or so because I've spent every free moment binging this. Hard to believe it's LFOD's first story; it's extremely well-written, hilarious, and the worldbuilding. Stars above, the worldbuilding.
Being a fucking friend observing when your friends family starts fighting is the most uncomfortable thing ever...
Good chapter, and yeah, that's a gloriously cheating cheat with no real limits.
I wonder if Cure ever saw this
11422786
11422917
I'm getting less "mob boss" vibe and more "mercenary type" feeling from Great Grandpa--the kind of former military that keep signing up for odd jobs that the regulars aren't likely going to touch due to a desire to minimize any "foreign entanglements", or even privately-hired guards to protect so-called "nobles".

one just sits there like this

Hehe, token good old pony racism.
Can't wait to see when he comes back with a functioning horn! 😜
Kinda hoped Cure would take out his horn and unicorn himself. That would have FLOORED them XD I have no doubt Cure is better at magic than most unicorns, so the irony is just... amazing.
