Looking at that title and dying to see what's being quantified as "less complex" than fillies.
Great to read another new chapter.

It is absolutely a thing. I have been loathe to start many stories due to their high word count.
The entirety of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy plus The Hobbit has a word count of approximately 500,000 to 575,000 depending on who is doing the counting. I see a word count exceeding that and it gives me pause.
Few things suck more when it comes to reading than getting deep into a new story only to realize it's never going to get good. I have been burned numerous times by various stories. They had a good hook and a good premise that quickly got me vested in the story. They usually start out mediocre but they get better over time to an extent. It's a new author and they are learning as they write.
However, things eventually plateau. The writing isn't moving towards what I would consider a good standard anymore or the story is starting to meander instead of advancing, like a series of filler episodes.
What is worse for you? Reading a great 100-200K word story that suddenly stops or reading 100-200K into a 1 Million+ word story only to come to the realization that it's not going anywhere?
With the first one, I have a great read and am left saddened that there isn't more. The second leaves a bad taste in my mouth and makes me more leery of starting super long stories like that again. I started off enjoy my read but was eventually left disappointed.
Life Finds a Way has been positively FANTASTIC. I'm glad I found it when it just started, but if I was just discovering it now? I would unfortunately be hesitant to start reading it.
What's next? Brain hardware upgrade to gain ability of operating two bodies at once? Why not make it three or thirty? Cure is going to create a swarm and nobody but minotaurs will be wiser.
Imagine running a line to Canterlot. And then having a bunch of autonomous "critters" look after Celestia and everyone else important from a distance. Like looking after his family in Golden Hills from Canterlot via a huge line.
Can't wait for him to show up to Tia and hand her a black cat.
Hmm, I wonder how hard it'd be to make an even tinier portal (maybe a few hundred cells wide) to pass a copper-lined vine through.
clever
awesome chapter the gushing waitress was cinda cute too
finally taking all his fillys on a date
so that's what he was planing, dam that's genius
thinking with portals
Now you're thinking with portals!
Like any technology, magic included, I would assume that the portal spells will become more efficient over time with each revelation to arcana studies.
Celestia will approve if he can figure out how to portal a whole cake through the network near-instantly...
Nice
Gonna be honest, I have no clue what was happening in the latter half of this chapter but Cure hanging out with his girls is always a plus. Nice chapter.
If I'm connecting the dots correctly, Cure is gonna pilot a duplicate using the portal rings for distance, instead of hiring someone through the government?
11847468
If he could do that and power the portals via ambient magic or something in-situ, then covering the entire country in relays would be highly trivial. He could most likely make a creature that could harness heat from geothermal vents or unrefined uranium and maintain an symbiotic insect colony for maintenance with what we already know he can do, although the programming would be incredibly hard.
It might be easier just to embed a biofactory deep underground, and have it search for copper deposits, refine them, and spool them like spider webs. The only real limiting factor to Cure's zerg capabilities are purely cognitive, so once he manages to crack multiprescence or non-ego forming brains, he would be effectively unimpeded if he wanted to surreptitiously grey-goo the underground.
That poor tax mare is going to develop a condition. She knows Cure is Serpentus, too. Dollars to donuts.
Was that the same restaurant where Cure’s tree was stolen? Did they ever get a lead on that? The waitress was cute though.
Would Wind Sheer be interested in the Gala?
The hospital celebration sounds like a better choice for the foals, though.
Cure can use those illusion crystals to replicate some human music. Maybe helping Rising Pitch develop some scores for her repertoire could be a bonding activity? And he’d get some music he likes.
That accidental pseudo-alicorn might become a target. Definitely going to be an issue for someone.

Trans-country cake delivery in couple of seconds? Here's the money from the budget!
This brings an interesting thought to mind. Will Cure receive repeat customers who will ask to revert cosmetic changes? I imagine if it was anyone, it would be someone like the half-zebra mare in this chapter, or someone else in a similar situation.
The body is reabsorbed, leaving only a ring sitting on the floor of his office at his mom’s shop. The tendril once again withdraws, and the ring deactivates. It disappears in a flash, popping back into existence in a shallow enclosure just underground outside his house before being gently relocated back inside back inside the room.
Cure would show off his ability to Celestia first to test it out fully and get her aproval
idea as a prank cure makes a sugar free cake with sugar free frosting on it and gives it to Title Search and celeastea as a eating contest who can eat the most cake would thay eat it???
Cure, please be responsible, and don't open a gateway to the moon. Equestria does not need a new vacuum cleaner record for the newest, most powerful room cleaner since the invention of the claymore.
Potential pranks aside, those rings are going to be extremely useful. Imagine Cure keeping one of those in every city in Equestria. He could be on-call for emergencies anywhere in the country at a moments notice. If he can split his attention enough, he can even be in multiple places at once.
Personally, I'm not one to curse, but if I was, this particular string of expletives would definitely be added to my vocabulary.
Anyone else think of this scene when reading this, especially knowing he started going Alicorn?

Cure: “Didn’t I already do this?”
Vines: “Yes, and you didn’t learn your lesson.”
Celestia: “You also managed to violate no less than 50 laws and ordinances at levels ranging from misdemeanor to felony in the process. You’re lucky you answer directly to me.”
Cure: “But think of all the advancements I made in magical theory!”
Celestia: “In subjects I specifically outlawed.”
Vines: “Using a means I specifically forbade you from using.”
Celestia: “So you and your 50 clones are all going to write ‘I will not break my dam’s heart by using forbidden magic to temporarily clone myself.’ Five hundred million times, each.”
Cure: “And if I refuse?”
Celestia: “It’s a royal order. Defying it carries the penalty of revocation of tax exempt status, with all back taxes due immediately alongside a penalty of a hourly one hundred thousand percent compounding interest rate from the date your last taxes should have been paid.”
Cures: “I will not break my dam’s heart by using forbidden magic to temporarily clone myself.”
is it just me... or is cure doing some concerningly supervillany shit right now... all in a desperate attempt to protect his secret identity? thats not even really a secret because everyone in his home town knows already? i mean... everybody knows everything about everybody in a small town.... and there has to be less then a dozen colts his age in golden hills.... it was never a secret to begin with. there was probobly a betting pool on weather or not he became an alicorn the moment he started doing magic
An Alicorn colt with past life identity issues figures out how to be in two places at once.
This can't possibly have any unintended consequences, I'm sure.
Lots going on in this chapter, very nice.
Typical Cure myopia, worrying about the tax mare who routinely manages confidential information and dismissing the danger posed by the Dough sisters.
Neighborhood bakers never gossip, amirite?
That Crowned fellow poses a bigger information risk, non-malicious intentions notwithstanding.
It's nice to watch as his fillies grow into their impending roles as his herd with each new moment of recognition for his (and eventually their) circumstances.
Politics are no fun for amateurs, and I doubt this will be the last time they have to calm him from some fit of frustration or stress.
And it's always a fascinating delight seeing what sort of innovations Cure concocts. His thorough testing is good both in-story and out, since it lets us readers learn the arcano-physical laws of this setting alongside him. Finally found a good low-latency long-distance conduit, too.

Idk if celeastea has the authority to do that she has rules she needs 2 follow as well so she does not have 100% authority and in a way cure is paying tax with his plants he is rinting out for free
11847675
Why a punishment? I thought Celestia would be delight to be able to outsource her duties to a clone.
Ya know, we had expected him and Celestia to coerce somepony to double, but if he's remote piloting his own puppet that skips so many steps!
If the power draw is lessened that much just dropping it to a centimeter, can't wait to see what a network of even smaller rings could do. If the power transfer isn't limited, perhaps he could event maintain a remote connection to his plantations and keep reserve remote power available without needing a physical plug!
Please allow me a moment to nerd out for a second.
The math for the energy draw would probably be similar to the volume of a cylinder. Well, more likely a truncated cone, but the math is a lot easer for a cylinder and approximate energy requirements. Using the description in the text of a rapid increase once Cure reaches a certain distance, I can tell that this is a logarithmic function, and as this is using areas and volumes, this is also an exponential function. I imagine that these are the available variables:
M: magic units used
r: radius of portal
d: distance from one end to the other.
We would also have a constant (n), likely related to magic density (similar to how Avogadro's number is used for atoms, but for magic). After doing some modeling, and making some assumptions for the unicorns that initially tried this, I think the best function for this portal energy requirements will look like this:
M = 1/3 * log_(n/d)(d)*d*r^2*π.
(Read as one third times the log base n over d of d, times d times r squared times pi)
Using 10,000 for n works well for the distances measured assuming that normal unicorn can exert 100 magic units, and a professional wizard can exert 5 times that. This shows a sustainable energy draw for the 10 cm ring, with a nearly linear increase until between 4 and 6 km which is followed by a sharp exponential increase until 10km where it becomes an infinite magic draw.
On the other hand, I have to assume that the previous experiment used a small proof of concept, around one meter radius as a proof of concept. Using the full size portal is instantly unsustainable and becomes worse by the millimeter.
You can plug this into an online graphing calculator to see the chart, just replace the variables and constants with the appropriate values.
Anyways, thanks for entertaining my math fumblings
I’m?
One wonders what happens if you try to teleport stuff through such a portal

Worms my friend....well....no?..worms themselves are complex creatures....hmmm....probably rabbids...those things are VERY simple outside of the one smart guy
If you had 2 sets of rings, and you powered the start of the second with horn sticking out of the end of the first, the total power draw is equal to the draw of half that distance times 2. Meaning that adding rings exponentially decreases the power consumption.
If the cost doubles every ~400m (as per the author's note) and an average unicorn could power a 1-ring system up to 4.8 km; that's 12 doublings. But these relays are additive not multiplicative, so with the rings spaced every 400m (for ease of math) that same unicorn could power an output ring over 1600 km away.
For context that is about 1/3 the length of the United States using 24 individual rings. With time to have his birds move those rings around he can cast any spell he knows, anywhere in that area, with 'noticable but not yet significant' overhead. If he wanted to expand his energy generation, he is now no longer limited to "areas he can creep a vine to" but instead to "basically anywhere on the land mass". The only limitation on this is Cure's ability to aquire gold tubing and crystals, and he's stupid rich and also royalty, so that is not a limitation at all.
If I was Cure, I would be stealthily playing a magical, biopunk version of Factorio, and I'm sure Equestria and your readers are both thankful they got him instead.
Prosthetic levitating horns might be considered an aid item instead of cosmetics, but it would require legislation.
After all, like with immortality cure, it's a djinn which cannot be contained once being let free.
But... Zecora has a cutie mark, and so do other zebras according to the comics
11848183
It’s almost as if Cure is 9 years old and doesn’t know everything. :P
11848194
You forget the mare was the one making the question
I was so excited to see Cure actually getting mad, it's a breath of fresh air since it seemed like he was just TOO calm and collected... can't wait for someone to do something to insult Cure or his family in front of him... knowingly or not...
11848364
"Breath of fresh air" Sounded like a pun on Cure's grass like Mane. lol
11847905
Is the x supposed to be a d?
If you gift to Rings to any plans he has grown, he could have a lot of bodies moving around but I’m not far from the rings since the plants could power them
11848514
Yes, fixed and thank you!
11848818
It also works as M=dr²πlog(n/d)(d^1/3). I believe
11848875
Interesting, that certainly does fit the model better, and it gave the the idea to play with the log exponents. I have no idea why it would work, but the following function works really well!
M=πdr^2*log_(n/d)(d^r)
Just thinking about the potential problems Cure’s new ability could lead to… especially for a pony who is already has some identity issues bubbling under the surface.
Best case scenario: Cure splits himself into three beings.
Cure Wave the Earth Pony.
Prince Serpentus the Alicorn
Ed the Human
Worst case scenario… I don’t want to think about it.
the colt needs therapy.
11849184
Saying a case of DID is a "best case scenario" is a little premature, I think. But yes, this is not going to be good for Cure's mental health.
Cure, is becoming a literal body horror that will span across all of Equs
11849338
Well the worst case scenario is Cure keeps splitting himself infinitely until he basically becomes Morty from that one episode where something similar happened in virtual reality.
This absolutely will go south. The question is how south this development will go before his friends and family step in to help.
