This is a story about a sheep. A little sheep, locked deep in prison, put there by ponies. He doesn't want to be there, but then he's had to do a lot of things he doesn't want to. It's a shame he deserves to be in there.

Well....It appears iβm all alone in the comment section. Being first is certainly lonely...good chapter by the way.

... family has been coming up a lot recently, and I can't help but suspect that the beans are gonna be spilled on Prey's vitally challenged family at some point in this arc.
Glad you are getting some proofreading help.
I've been wondering something: Why doesn't Prey use his mind magic to write his consciousness onto a separate individual and steal their identity to get away free.
Is it a matter of philosophy, ability, risk mitigation, or trust? Prey could have a philosophy on consciousness that precludes such a solution satisfying him. Prey could just be unable to do it because there are complexities in mind magic that make the procedure exponentially difficult. It could be far too risky for Prey's liking, say even a... 5% chance of killing him outright. Perhaps it can't be done on oneself and Lemon Pink would have to do it, and Prey doesn't trust anyone enough with his most precious possession: his own mind.
Why yes, this does have absolutely nothing to do with the current chapter.

leathery wing which was a discoloured plaid white (plain, or I'm assuming. Even for a pony a plaid discoloration would be something else.)
Hmm. I am just waiting for the next shoe to drop. Aka the next mission. Is it wrong for me to hope for something as dark as if not darker than the one with the Reaper King and kindersnatches?
Very neat chapter, it's cool to get some more threstal lore.

Agreed.
10665298
I think that would be quite interesting, I've been waiting for that to happen.
10665298
Probably right around when the Sun Wolf is supposed to be putting medals on them and remembers the little mind leach she thought she had successfully locked away in Dreverton.
Omg it's harmony's comet! The prophecy is true!!!

Vitally challenged
10665303
Well, take lemon pink, that's exactly what Prey did with her, yet she's just a robot with all the knowledge that prey has.
Chapter 67.5 showed us how she's undeveloped as an individual, which even led to her making bad decisions in the past, like killing that pack of diamond dogs without thinking of the kind of attention that would draw.
Your updates are highlight of my weekend I mean it. Good stuff, there's never too much story

Good chapter! Thanks for writing!

Details details details... so much to build a world. I feel sorry for Gloom though, life can change so very fast

I would be remiss if I didn't point out that Lemon Pink wasn't made intentionally so she can't be used as definitive proof of any position. Nonetheless, that's not a bad point.
Here are a few pieces of evidence that concern the transfer of personality:
When Prey absorbs someone's mind he has to sort through their memories to not lose control, but when he's done the voices that remain are stated to only be what Prey imagines they would say in those situations, on the other hand, they keep coming back and Prey keeps destroying them so is Prey correct about them just being his impressions of them? We also see Lemon Pink act quite a bit like Prey on occasion. That one time when she blew up at Randy about not needing pity for being an orphan gave off 100% concentrated Prey vibes, even though Prey isn't an orphan in the sense that he didn't know his family. The very way she acted was not unlike Prey when he says he doesn't need help or somebody tries to touch him.
I have a new hypothesis that could potentially explain the discrepancies: Prey doesn't know how to bring over personality directly. That is to say, he can bring over personality but only by grabbing the memory. And since every part of the mind is intertwined, chunks of personality come with. But if prey did this he'd be ripping chunks of his personality all willy nilly and putting them elsewhere so they'd arrive all torn apart, damaging his consciousness in the process. It would be a matter of Prey not having the technology. But why elements of personality can still come to the recipients of memory.
FYI, I'm considering personality as patterns inscribed into the outer white matter of the upper front half of the brain responsible for things like emotions, decision-making, language, etc... Since the part of the brain responsible for long-term memory is in the center of the brain we could easily imagine that all sorts of things in the brain would be sort of plucked out alongside the memories during a mind absorption, Prey's mind probes actings as an analogue for tweezers for this process.
10665303
The videogame SOMA covers this issue, and literally why copying your mind to another body isn't a solution.
If you copy yourself to another body, that copy of you can go free. But you, you stay behind.
If you're asking why he doesn't transfer his mind over, that's probably impossible. My impression was that people's minds in this story are part physical part non-physical. Transferring minds sounds cool, but it's got to be super deadly if at all possible.
10665298
I hope so. That's going to be such a fun reveal, and could potentially start the reveal of Prey's backstory. I doubt it, but anything's possible.
I think I know how sheep can get their claim to fame. Prey can write a self-help book on how to become a lich!
Will those two new characters be important? Will they be mentioned again anytime soon? Will they end up dead? What ever the case is I probably won't remember their names .
10666213
I've played SOMA before and that game always bothered the shit out of me. Not only because the main character is kind of an idiot and never truly absorbed that information(there is no coin flip), but having a copy of yourself sounds like the opposite of a problem, there are now two of you, that's twice as good. Forget escaping into space on a satellite, I would create thousands, millions of copies of myself and repopulate the world with brain-scan uploads. As a robot you wouldn't need a stable biosphere, you could just live in the ash-covered volcanic hellscape and survive off of geothermal power stations. A world of me sounds like a paradise.

Man, if the ISND ever truly come back together they'd have such a diverse cast: A pegasus clan exile, a thestral, a runt lamb/eternally young lich-esc lamb, a half parasitic plant half magically dead unicorn, and an earth pony.
Funnily enough, almost all of them have some sort of family issue: Crimson was a clan exile, Lily is currently (pretty much) being disowned because of the lack of magic and parasitic growth, Scenic and his family continually argue about what job he should take, and Prey had his father dip from the whole 'parenting' business, his mother die in planned arson, and his brother getting brainwashed into being just another rebel, rejecting familial bonds, and subsequently dying. Honestly, Gloom is (unlike his name) the one with the most reason to be happy.
10665298
Oh my gosh why do I love the term vitally challenged so much π

Hello. To explain, it is much as Derpmeister said. There is a large risk of failure, and even if successful, a large change of serious, permanent side effects. Prey is an expert, but even he knows there are things he doesn't understand. Just look at how Snake and Garrow's remnants have stuck around in his head and he can't get rid of them?
It is not an exact science. One slip can mean your own brain death, something which Prey is keenly aware of. No.# 2 on Prey's list, Survival. He's terrified of death.
There are no expert manuals to Mind Magic. Only beginner guides. Why? Because there aren't enough practitioners who survive long enough to become experts.
Just as an example, What if he becomes the remnant in the other persons head, and not the one in control? As you yourself said:
But good (if utterly immoral), idea of taking over someone else's brain anyways.π π

10666493
Don't worry, that's kind of the point! It was my own little joke, π since there's a whole bunch of characters already.
10666725
"Welcome to the ISND! Now, it's best to get this sorted right at the beginning: Please list, in alphabetical order, what are your problems?."
10666327
On that note, if they were any other sheep out there who've done great deeds, but aren't known, it begs the question: Why aren't they known? Which leads onto the next question; maybe because they don't want their deeds to be known. ππ
Quoting and butchering a Harry Potter line and all that: "Did great things. Terrible! But great."
10665795
π Fortnightly thanks π

Preeeeeetty much accurate to real life in the story, yeah.

π *Suspicion* ...Everyone seems very keen that I do a wholesome family chapter by the sound of it. That, or create a huge opera tragedy out of everything. Either or. Not sure what people are angling for more.
10665308
Eesh. That's a tall writing order. π That Arc was great, and so much fun to write. Also, incidentally, very hard to top without simply being a rehash of concepts.
10666911
Yeah, I imagine. Reading it I was like 'Holy. Mother. Of. God.' because it was just so dense and you could practically feel the TENSENESS and creepiness of the situation.
Regardless, literally every chapter is awesome so keep up the good work!
This view from Prey and Crimson has been bothering me. I'm pretty sure they're not meant to be right, since we see Scenic's family being crummy, and Lily's parents being outright horrible. But this still comes across as a little closeminded from both Prey and Crimson. They may have liked their families, but that doesn't mean everyone has to. Ya'll gonna say that 'family is family' to all the kids getting beaten or molested by their parents? I think it's perfectly okay to cut someone out of your life if they treat you like yesterday's trash.
On the flip side, it's also perfectly okay to form a family with people who aren't related to you by blood. Blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb, as they say. Are Scenic and Carton related? The answer: I sure fucking hope not! And he seems to like her better than his parents, in fact, it would be pretty sad if he didn't.
Maybe it's just one big cosmic joke where the people who like their families never get to see them again, but those who don't can do anything but. How beautifully hideous the universe can be.
10666904
Wait, are you saying that Prey would rather fabricate a wholesome family of sheep - presumably by mind-warping them - or arrange for some terrible "accident" to happen to what he would claim was his family than just revealing they've been dead the whole time? Because now that you've mentioned the other possibilities, both of those sound so much more interesting. The wholesome family one especially: just imagining the ponies looking from the family and then at Prey, then wondering just wtf happened to make him is hilarious.
10666939
In answer: No, this isn't supposed to be representative of all families. It is Prey and Crimson's view.
Also, it means that even if you hate your family, they will always be your family, as in, physical blood relations. You can decide someone is no longer your friend, but you can't decide someone is no longer your mother/father/brother etc. Genetically, I mean.
10665308
10666911
I think the opposite personally. Always trying to do something bigger and bigger always, and I mean ALWAYS leads to spectacle creep, one of the biggest story killer.
As I said before:
10214322
10666951
That's a great theory.
The way I see it, if it ever comes to it. He has these 3 choices:
Reveal his family was dead all along and he lies about it.
Brainwashing a family of sheep to think he is their son. Will probably be way to complicated and way to risky. But maybe possible.
Fake or stage an accident that killed his supposed family. Maybe even actually killing a family of sheep and brainwashing the rest of the village to think it was an accident. More likely and less risky then the previous one, but Prey will absolutely hate this option.
Or maybe another possibility I'm missing. All of them can lead to interesting results.
Anyways great chapter once again, curious to see where this chapter leads, the family theory seems likely so far.
Also 555 likes, and more importantly chapter 69.
10666904
Honestly, how you would write it is up to you, i've just been waiting for Crimson and the gangβ’ to find out that Prey's family is, as Syroc put it, sadly vitally challenged.
10666844
Not like morals will be a problem.
No real danger here, it's nice to see that, it's a small respite.
Can't wait for the next thing, it's a good chapter, a good setup
Wondering about the numbers. 43 new thestrals were announced, but 46 were in the cafeteria.
10666951
Whoa.... dark but effective
10668362
I was wondering about that too... spies?
10666858
All hail the great and terrible Lord Fluff, he who founded the land of the Sheeple, and scared the princess and everyone else into moving their kingdoms literally ANYWHERE else
10668362
43 new Thestrals + the ISND? The new Thestrals are eating after a long journey, and the ISND has been established to eat at weird times so that explains why there weren't other established night guards.
Edit:
Yeah, nope, nevermind I too have questions now. To play Devil's advocate, Prey could've just miscounted the first time since they were all flying around in circles. Ever have to count the fruit flies in a jar in high school biology? You're not going to be able to do it while they're conscious.
10668362
10668401
10668489
Well, um uhh, no. See, it's, I.... made a typing mistake...? π π π
Sorry.
10668553
Crazy what theories such a simple error can spawn though lol
10668553
It happens. Just something that bugged me while reading and that I wanted to know. Thanks for the clarification!
Another great chapter!! Keep up the awesome work
Can't believe I miss an entire chapter coming out by an entire week! Oh boy, I need to do some catch up on other stories now. Anyways, caught two small typos. Actually, the only reason I notice "discoloured" spell wrong was because it triggered my autocorrect when pointing out the first typo
