This is a story about a sheep. A little sheep, locked deep in prison, put there by ponies. He doesn't want to be there, but then he's had to do a lot of things he doesn't want to. It's a shame he deserves to be in there.

This was great, the fear of the border guards made me break into a cold sweat.
... I am really getting a chance to give my antipathy muscles a flex in these new chapters. And its wonderful.
Kinda split on how to feel about Crimson, though. Pretty counterproductive to simply order someone to not be racist, especially when the first distinguishing feature he leaps on for Prey to so greatly hate is race. And who just got called out for being fundamentally racist not long ago. You know he's met other unicorns without having that level of hatred, guys. But I also don't want him to die! Yet.
This just keeps getting more interesting.
had just admitted
newfound
figures' / to their upper bodies.
How can you end on a cliff hanger like that
Can't he just catch a break ? He'd be happier in chains at this point.
Great chapter, like always

ARGH! As proofreader, it is my job to catch these things.
I seem to miss a few every chapter
As used here, this should be 2 words
One point
They seem to be assuming that tearing the pony out of the kindersnatch will save them
How do they KNOW that it won't kill them? IMO, they don't
The flow of this story is so good. I love how there continues to be character development, but the short-term plot also stays exciting and engaging.
Yep, definitely arouses suspicion--that is, the fact that Shimmer's mind seems to be rather well guarded. Most perturbatory indeed. On that note, however, the Border Guard, eh? I must say, that was something I wasn't really expecting. I mean, I expected them to appear sometime later on in the story, but I was rather blindsided by it here. Though with the power of retrospection, as
bootleg Deeper Greenthe Forest is far beyond the usual jurisdiction of the Royal, Solar(?) and Night Guards, it only makes sense that they, the Border Guard that is, be there.Another note that I'd like to address, is the Border Guards' sudden appearance. Surely they would have responded earlier to the Mayflower incident? Or is it that the ISND simply did not happen across them during their little stint into the woods; that being equally possible. Nevertheless, it is... peculiar. Whilst Prey's personal bias might be colouring our view of the Guards, I can't help but feel that all is not as it seems. That, and, generally speaking, strangers encountered in the woods tend to be marginally more malignant than your average character. But who knows? Perhaps I'm being paranoid! Unlikely though--that would require this story to be somewhat less grimdark than it is.
Anyway, enough soliloquising from me! As always, it's a pleasure to read this story, and I eagerly await your next installation!
Regards, Laika.

Indeed. I'm going to have to agree with you on... Well, all fronts here, mate. I couldn't help but feel that Crimson and Gloom had somewhat betrayed their colleague there. To just come to the conclusion that it's a predominantly racist thing that drives such a visceral reaction, it's almost selling Prey short, really.
And he isn't just reacting to Shimmer either! It's the blasted Pegasus too.
On your second point, I especially agree. They seem to be perfectly willing to enable their, as you say, fundamental racism and even chide Prey from calling them out on it. But when Prey exhibits the first sign of a visceral hatred, though he isn't telling them the full truth, they seem to be awfully sharp to chalk it down to racism and condemn and even reprimand him for it.
The sheer, absolute hypocrisy is completely astounding...

Thank you, as always, for first spotting and second pointing out these silly mistakes. 😁

Unfortunately, ponies are rather casually racist, (there's lots of it in the show in the background) but they would be shocked if you ever accused them of it. They don't even notice when they are being racist. "Gasp! I would never."
As for Gloom, well, he has a minor excuse that he's under a lot of pressure, and from his perspective, there's nothing wrong with the Border Guards. They've never done anything wrong to him, so why shouldn't he trust them? There all Guards, surely that makes them all on the same side, right? What could go wrong?
10098751
Yep, the Royal and Night Guard operate in and out of Canterlot. The Border Guard operates and patrols on, well, 'the border'. 😆 They're mainly the ones who deal with the usual roaming monsters, like Timberwolf packs, or a chimera that needs to be moved on.
But as to why Shimmer and Atlas are here right now, in the woods, why they didn't come earlier, or if they did come earlier, their secret motives, (if any), plans, etc........ That will come in time! No Spoilers!
Sorry.
Hope you liked the chapter anyways! Until next time.
How does this fic just keeps getting better? When you think it achieved peak performance Wham!... It goes even beyond that. Somehow keeps doing it time and time again.
Personally, I love the moments in which outwardly calm and collected Prey gives himself into anger. No matter how much of a little monster he is, it still sometimes shows him as painfully fallible. He may be fairly old by now, but he certainly didn't mature the same way and I love it.

Ah, those cursed words: "Spoilers". Oh well, the wait is half the fun (so I've been told...).
And yes, I greatly enjoyed the chapter. I realise now I didn't specifically say that I did, so I apologise for that.
Regards, Laika.

Well, he was imprisoned without any contact with anyone for most of that time. So even if he's older, he didn't have any chance to really mature. And in addition to that we don't know if his brain itself develops physically, it might too be stuck like the rest of his body, and we can only guess how that can affect him.
But I do agree. It was interesting how Prey, the calm, cold, calculative and logical Prey seemingly abandoned all reason in a fit of pure raging hatred.
Definetly enjoyed that chapter, despite the damn cliffhanger at the end. It just keeps getting better and better.
Aaargh I just reread this chapter, and Crimson is disappointing me even more! I am such disappoint!
I always get a big jolt of happiness whenever I check my favourites list to see a new chapter this amazing book. So thank you so much for taking the time to write this story so that people around the world can see your amazing skill writing.

I'm picturing the 'plant' part simply leaving only the essentials (brain, eyes, heart, lungs, some other necessary systems) while feasting on and replacing the rest (bone, skin, muscle, most of legs and non-organs).
A bit nasty, yes, but pratical.
It is incredible how stupid the ponies can be, prey has been right multiple times and continue to ignore it in the most critical moments
First off, another great chapter like usual.
Secondly, Shimmer just rubs me the wrong way. Everything he does just seems suspicious to me.
Thirdly, I agree with what most of the people in the comments have said so far. The ponies are blind hypocrites when it comes to racism. They can’t seem to understand that they themselves are racist towards every other race but they are quick to come down on those who seem to be racist towards ponies.
Fourthly, Crimson’s belief that ‘everyone is equal and no is better than anyone else’ is a nice thought, but completely wrong on almost every level of reality.
Physically speaking, using the human race as an example, certain individuals will perform better at certain activities primarily due to genetics. A real life example is facial recognition. So some people will naturally be better athletes, scholars, mathematicians, writers, so on and so forth.
Then you get into things like background, culture, religion, lifestyle, wealth, jobs. Some people innately have a better starting position as soon as they are born.
But all this falls to the wayside when consider the world of Equestria, it’s races and magic. Prey had the right idea, ponies are lucky and privilege and they don’t even know it.
I’ve Gotta say this is the best story I have read on the site by far. Most stories just fall into repetitiveness and drawls out. But this just keeps getting better!
Keep it up. This story is underrated and I hope it continues for a long time.

Thank you for saying so.
I do try to keep the story from stagnating, but it's hard to get the "feel" for.
Error Report: but mostly just angry at him for wasting previous time right now. (precious)
