This is a story about a sheep. A little sheep, locked deep in prison, put there by ponies. He doesn't want to be there, but then he's had to do a lot of things he doesn't want to. It's a shame he deserves to be in there.

These updates are by far the best part of the weekend.
Ah, never change Prey, never ch– on second thought, the sooner you change, the better.
You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?
Horses prance through a silver storm!
Figures dancing gracefully,
Across my memory!
HE'S A WHAT?!
More! Moooore! MOOOOORE!
His mask didn't fight perfectly, but it never had.
force you (to) support them in their war,
They were so close to finding out camp and they knew it,
So that's the story of the last days of the Resistance at it really happened,
thy vacation days to visit they family."
Another great chapter, one that had me deeply invested. I knew this would always come, but was not expecting it until much later, maybe being half forced to by Crimson or Gloom. Either way it was an amazing bit of character development for both Lemon and Prey. One part in particular stuck out to me in particular was the needle as I am damn near certain that it at some point be inserted into the witch's pincushion to recharge it having completed some arcane requirements, which would also explain its survival and Prey taking it despite not planning to. Dark magic items want to be used as previously mentioned.
Can't wait for the next half of this chapter, assuming that's what the .5 is about.
10751561
Hmmm, I don't think taking the needle is related, but it could become related. I could see the artifact require sentimental items to recharge it, or something.
this chapter hurt my emotions so badly... ive done some doodles on paper of prey, but maybe its time for a full-blown digital painting?
After hearing Prey's account of the war, Luna offhandedly mentioning how information wins wars sits wrong. It doesn't seem right for it to be flippantly described in those terms like it's a fun summer camp activity. A sort of Freudian slip on Luna's part to talk about this potential international disaster as a "war" before any shots have even been fired. Horrible, entitled, and sheltered, really.
10751561
The .5 is the number of the arc in which the chapter takes place, in this case arc 5.
10751629
If you want some inspiration this person has quite a bit of Prey and a Lamb art. This is their art for this chapter. I'd recommend looking through some of his art, there's quite a lot of nice stuff there.
Peel.
Border.
Guerrilla.
At the trap where my capture happened.
Fit.
Amateur.
As.
Tired.
Thy family.
Thank you.
Interesting development this chapter, getting the look into how the Resistance spent their final days and the unfairness of it all. Maybe we'll see what happened to the ten/how Prey killed them one day, but its not really too important.
Luna, however, promised not to go into his dreams. She went into his dreams to drag him out of them- prey might Have Words™ with her about that, if his anger blinds him or he goes cold rational and guilt trips her into thinking she's breaking the promise- which she in most respects is, even though she doesn't think so.
Also, sits in the title should be capitalized.
10751705
Damn, I didn't realize there was any substantial amount of art out there. Thank you for sharing this.
I bet number one on the list is "Kill Celestia".
Wow, Captain Firestrike is worse than I thought by far, I figured he'd be self righteous, but not to the point of being willing to use even mind magic to achieve his goals, and if he's willing to use mind magic, then what wouldn't he be willing to use?
Self righteous, and willing to use any means necessary, it's all too familiar.
Number Two on the List confirms- in my mind, at least- what I've been thinking for a while. The most dangerous warlocks have two obsessions. One is always 'knowledge'. Prey has it; it's why he's so eager to get into the Library. The Warlock of the Kindersnatches had it, he wanted to know what happens after death, I think? The other varies, from warlock to warlock. The Kindersnatch's creator was obsessed with souls and death, which made him rather noisy and obvious. Prey's second obsession is survival. He is, therefore, incredibly dangerous because he's willing to cut and run, to do anything if it means he lives to fight another day.
Also, this is now on my user page in my favourite dark fics section.
Man that was a strong chapter. Seeing Prey, who is usually in such great control of his emotions cry and hesitate to such a staggering degree was a particularly strong punch in the gut.
And that Firestrike reveal. I never imagined he of all people would be a mind mage. Pieces are falling into place. Each twist better than the last
I'm a bit sad about the mask, but ultimately I think it's a good thing he burnt it. The needle on the other hand. Knowing how you tend to write, it will come into some form of importance later on.
You are a master of your craft, a d each time my expectations are surpassed despite being as high as they are. I already can't wait for the next one.
Ah perfect, my "saturday" update I've been waiting every two weeks for the past few years.
More lore, more hindsight about Prey's past, and even more reason to hate Fire Strike of course.
At least this part is over, he made gravestones, it's a big step and another point toward redemption.
And of course, since we can't have nice things, the only days he decides to take time for himself are cut short by a bad piece of news.
Of course. And I hope he won't be thrown into Griffonia, it would be ill advised right ?
Excellent chapter as usual, thanks for providing this bi-weekly fix
"This ain't no Home Sweet Home, it's Home Sweet Misery."
Old song lyric
This is the second time Prey has bore his soul to a stranger only to erase those memories. It seems like he really wants somebody to talk to and bare his soul. But due to how incriminating it is can't afford to, and also quite possibly because he fears making himself emotionally vulnerable as well. I bet he'd really want to vent to Crimson, but if anything he's the last person Prey would want to tell. (amongst non-alicorns) Because even if he erases it afterwards, a bad reaction from his one and only friend would sting too much for him. After Gloom found out and tried to go to Luna, Prey seems to resent him more than before, calling him an unwelcome intruder and stuff like that in his internal monologue. Because even Gloom rejecting him, hurt, even if Prey would never admit it.
Finaly, we get the story of how it ended. :)
Another amazingly feeling chapter

Finally, I actually manage to correctly, somewhat guess the next chapter.
And why, oh why did you have to give us three cliffhangers in a row
10 bits next chapters going to be a cliffhanger as well
I wonder, did Prey find the needle, or did the needle want to be found?
It sticks out to me that there just happened to be an intact needle amongst decade long rubble, what are the chances of it remaining intact, let alone prey finding it, I figure this is Selenia's Pincushion reaching out to him, similar to how the liches mirror found him.
The word you're looking for here is cenotaph.
10751799
My money's on list item one being apologize to mother.
10752080
Except he can't, apologize. He's Prey, not Gossamer. It was Gossamer's Mother who died, not his. Prey doesn't have a Mother.
10752218
This is true. However, it was stated that item one isn't possible, which is why I think apologizing to his mother is the true answer. In addition to what you said, Gossamer's mother is dead. (Was her name ever stated? If not, then I have a very wild theory.)
Nightmare Moon was the mother all along, and this story actually takes place many years after the show ended.
When NMM returned, she sparked the resistance and birthed children who would become her future solder-elite. Luna is trying to atone for an event that her alter-ego caused, and reconnect with Prey, her only remaining child.
10752229
...I did not expect that that was where your prediction was going.
Also, Prey is finally getting some closure on his terrible, horrible, no good, very bad childhood. Let's hope this helps his traumatized mind heal.
That was a guess of mine, but of course I was yet again pleasantly surprised by the content regardless. As for the mission in Griffonstone, of course something has gone wrong. That's a necessary part of every time Prey tries to relax and recuperate from an ordeal.
10752073
I concur, it's a literal needle in a pile of rubble.

10751981
Yeah, you did get it right on the money, or bits, but I couldn't confirm it to give away spoilers. But well done.
10751824
Number two. Number two... It makes you wonder what number one is.
(At least, I hope it does, since I wrote it like that 😂)
10751893
The heart wants what it wants. A bitter, small, withered, blackened, slime pumping, jaw bitten heart. 🖤
Perhaps the better question is, does Prey even know what his own heart wants?
10751740
Thank you for the corrections. Fixed now!
10751561
And fixed these now too. 🍎
10751470
Glad to hear you enjoyed it again. 😉
And yes, Fire Strike turned out to be an amateur mind mage.
"Prey saw his mask, saw what he had been, and looked at what he was now, and made a choice."
10751827
Thank you.
And yes, things are different now. Things have changed. The war never ended for Prey, but it is still over in a way. Forgive and forget? Never.
But things are still different. Because Prey has a friend now.
10751826
10751629
This chapter was one I have been building the story towards for a while now. There was a lot of build up and slowly escalating hype, and in the end this is what happened. Some resolution, some closure, some progress. 😌
Two steps forwards, one step back. But forwards.
I... did quite enjoy this chapter. There were areas I feel it could have turned out better, (I don't actually know what I'd change, though), but over all I was quite satisfied.

Lol, they would not like the visual imagery prey would see for himself. Hehe.
Really liked this chapter! Big character development/progression and really nice to read. In particular I love how you were able to juxtapose prey in how he views people now vs back in the war.
Thanks for writing.
Prey finally gets some peace and rest.
*Skype call incoming*
WTF is Skype!
Aaand it's cliffhanger time. Damn it
The lore was good though
Bam! A perfect dose of escapism by diving into the one of my favorite stories of all time. How I will Rue the day when I read the final paragraph of this story.
Loved this chapter, especially Straperdale. The town feels like the closest thing to what Prey wants. The kind of place he would retire in even though that will never happen.
One thing stuck out to me though. I feel like Prey broke the promise he made to Crimson in chapter 69.5:
I know Prey thinks Gossamer's family isn't his family but three days seems like lot of time out of his busy schedule (of paperwork and necromancy) for people who aren't family. Regardless Prey went to Rushweed and would probably have a hard time explaining why if Crimson found out he did.
10753309
The virgin monarchist Celestia vs the chad anarcho-communist Prey.
10752502
Ha! Yes, Dream Skype™, that's an amusing concept.
I am shocked - shocked, I say! - that the clandestine mission in a foreign nation conducted by easily identified and inexperienced agents has had some problems.
But who cares about that, Prey's had character development! He emoted in a way that wasn't (explicitly) murderous! And it's fantastic! Seriously, reading him recall his experiences was a treat.
Wow, extremely well written as always. Reminded me of the fact that under all that darkness and hate. Prey is, and always will be, a child
those many—> that many
gerilla—> guerrilla
ait—> it?
Sacrecrow—> Scarecrow
10752477
I've had some interesting ideas finally coalesce this chapter for me into something cohesive. What does Prey's heart want? Seemingly a family.
Prey took everything from Gossamer, including his desires, who, having prematurely lost his family, would of course desperately want them back. But Prey can't have Gossamer's late family, not only because they're dead but also because he's not Gossamer, whatever that actually means. In this way, Prey has framed himself out to be someone that: remembers the death of a mother that had never been his.
Clearly, I'm eluding to Prey being in the same boat as Lemon Pink, and I do this to suggest that Lemon Pink is Prey's family, not Gossamer's family, but Prey's specifically. I'm of the opinion that family is the inseparable bond formed between people with enough shared experiences. It's a model of family that explains why adopted children are family and Yarn isn't family. Though usually, shared experiences doesn't mean literal shared experiences. How could two people who share brain be less close than two who merely share blood? Blood of the covenant, move aside! There's a new competitor in town!
Not exactly sure what kind of family Lemon would constitute, an outsider looking in may assume she's an adoptive mother, Prey created her, so she's a daughter, she shares Prey's whole life experience, therefore a twin. Regardless, Prey realizing that Lemon is somebody that also remembers may spur him to consider that maybe he actually can fill that seemingly bottomless hole torn into his heart long before a bite from any jaws. He can't have what was lost, but he can build something new.
I wonder, hypothetically, if prey could play an instrument what would it be?
10757608
Now we're asking the real questions.
How about: Garrow was good at playing the guitar, and Prey would be too, except he's un-talon-ted. [Laugh Track]
10758190
Nice one
Gotta sneak this one in before another chapter comes out.
