This is a story about a sheep. A little sheep, locked deep in prison, put there by ponies. He doesn't want to be there, but then he's had to do a lot of things he doesn't want to. It's a shame he deserves to be in there.

Wake up Mr Pensive. Wake up and smell the chapter.

Mmhhhh, smells like breakfest... CHAPTPER!
Avoiding the ruins! HOw suspicious... The fact we've had no insight into Prey's thoughts once yet suggests... Something malicious...
You magnificent bastard! Arrrg, the whole PoV change was just to mess with us! Geeze...
Though I am still wondering what happened to Prey for three days.
Don't trust that. Not one bit-
Excellent chapter but man does something smell fishy.
What... W-why. How could you... HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME!!!
After all that we did! After all that we read! Nooooooo!
Prey's... changed...He's... Has my hope of Prey changing for the better started to come true?
I know in my bones that at some point you considered ending the chapter there. And I'm immensely grateful to whatever deity intervened and ignited a spark of mercy in your cold heart.
What a fun chapter. You have me thoroughly convinced for over half of it, and I only had haunting doubts by the time of the reveal.
A few spelling mistakes I caught:
All hail the conquerors, right?
whether if it was

love the red vs blue reference!
I think I found a song that really fits well with the theme of this story,
It has a very heavy tone of self redemption, not sad, but very regretful of the past, but also hopeful for the future.
was shockingly —> wasn’t shockingly
And the title needs a change, but that was a good chapter. One question answered, a dozen more returning. Buying a year of peace by whatever happened in the last three days
Author, why must you be so good at building tension? The ache I felt for the majority of this chapter was physically painful.
aaaaaah come on!
:D
Honestly prey putting down that half eaten cupcake made mad at the nonexistent changeling I was sure it was. Though yeah it does bring up a lot of questions to ruminate over in my head.
Were any of his curses affected? How did he survive/get away? What was that one commenter right about when mentioning the shackles?
Also looking forward to the future already. It is pretty great what you have built the characters up to through all the arcs.
Hmm. I have the oddest suspicion that this could still be a Changeling replacing Prey, but that the ribbon overwrote the Changeling's conscious to replace it with Prey again.
What. Whole chapter is like a horror movie, when something is off and only noticed by wiever, but instead of jumpscare, ribbon appears and Prey is fixed. And once things stop being surreal, it leaves me more confused than when they were. Mostly because i cant even tell if its something shady or just change in perspective.
Longest two weeks of my life incoming.

There is a segment though explaining prey wanted to be with crimson on purpose and that he set up the jack in box mentioning good old mind magic. There is also the direct mentioning in the authors note so I have a hard time leaning to that theory. Though he did leave that cupcake half finished. Waste not, want not.
Ah, so prey did somehow manage to get away from the changelings
unless...
I failed to find any errors this chapter, and while I'm glad to see my assumption proved wrong, I wish I'd been aware of that earlier on as I had a hard time really enjoying the chapter as I spent a lot of time in Inquisitor mode. The amount of potential false flags and missteps mixed in with the fact you weren't running the chapter from Prey's POV was very good for throwing me off the scent. Maybe we can even find out what exactly Prey did, though I suspect it did involve mind leaching with both his seeming newfound empathy and relation of loneliness to hunger. Which might also be why he showed back up at all despite saying numerous times he'd flee the second he got free.
I knew the change in perspective was a clever trick, it was too obvious the last time to be this simple awnser.
Not having the usual lines of "He knew where it was" or "after checking for poison" would mess me up.
So in the eyes of the others he's just a smartass little lamb, no hate, no snarky comments, just a weird kid smilling away.
That spin every other chapter right ?
So he did the second culling in those 3 days if I understood it correctly.
Can't wait to see the next chapter, again.
Good job, it was lovely, it's also nice to see my favorite fluffball is alright.
unless it's another trick, but I can only try to guess this many layers of trickery

I personally dont think the lyrics line up very well with the story, good song by itself though

Not exactly, but it's not written for this story specifically, I was talking about the tone that this story sets.
The entire damn time, I was going ‘No mind magic, no rune work, giving someone a GIFT? This has to be a changeling!’ You got me good, Author. You got me good.
man. I thought pray was a changeling all along I was expecting it. I was expecting the changeling to kidnap crimson and a struggle and replace him and Gloom. The plan would have been so smart. but how did pray escape the vampires of the bugs. that is all. This chapter confuse me.?
Sorry that I sound stupid as a rock. I'm not good at comments.
Seems Prey has upgraded his ribbon, perhaps instead of having to trick someone into holding it, he could command the ribbon to go after and attack someone instead.
Wow this chapter really mess with my head I was so sure it was a changeling.
Sounds like Prey's caused another one of the Purges we've heard about, I figure he was able to cause massive damage to the changelings through the use of mind magic on their hive mind.
He's never been able to get his hooves on a live changeling before after all, what with their suicide bombing, but this time, maybe he was able to cause a civil war.
Mind mages can effectively duplicate themselves to an extent after all, sure he couldn't give Lemon his personality, but he could still give her his skills and motivations, and Lemon could do the same.
One mind mage can create an army of enemies into an army of allies, bringing Prey to their hive could be the worst mistake they could possibly make.
Argh. I wish I didn't read those spoilers, but curiosity is my weakness. Actually, I tell a lie: I do appreciate knowing. But the mystery!
...
Yeah, I can't actually decide whether I like knowing that or not. Gonna need to see how the arc unfolds to come down one side or another. But I do like that ambivalence.
This is one of those chapters that I'm gonna need to read several times just to get the most out of it, and I love it. There's a buttload of implications and assumptions that get thrown around that get twisted around toward the end, and its gonna take a while to unpack it.
Stay amazing, author. And keep screwing with my expectations.
(Also, implausible though it may seem, somehow you managed to make me hate Scenic more than Luna. Well played.)
I think the Jack in the box is a Golem, similar to the Reaper King in Mayflower, as Scenic said, it's too heavy even if it was full of wood, I figure that it's a metal golem, ready to be unleashed in case of emergency, such as in another discord type incident.
The big question would be how did he get away? He didn'they away right away, otherwise Lemon wouldn't have gone looking for him at his apartment and letting herself be seen by Crimson.
Prey didn’t finish the cupcake…. Hmmm… It’s things like this that remind me that the author has some serious writing skill, making me doubt my own perspective on Prey.

Same, but at the same time there were so many things that seemed to be too good to be a changeling. He knew everything he needed to and didn’t ask any extra odd questions. So it left the question, how did the changeling know how to act like prey so well? And then I got my answer. Because in order to act like prey that well they would have had to do some mind magic and when it comes to prey and mind magic, they would loose. Or would they? We don’t know. Yet.....
Now that's one hell of a way to keep readers guessing! I really wasn't sure at all if we were reading about Prey or not, and the use of more third persony third person, the focus on emotions, the slight offness of everything really really added to that effect. Truly, an amazing sleight of... word?
I enjoyed it thouroughly.
I guess I was wrong. Great chapter as always!
I knew I shouldn't have spoiled myself, but I just couldn't help it. Never again. I know this chapter would've had me on the edge of my seat if I didn't skip to the end.
I don't know why, but something tells me that I'm really gonna enjoy this arc.

👀💦
This kind of pisses me off because Prey did, in fact, flee Canterlot, but he was in the right to do so. Prey shouldn't have to pretend to have been teleported from inside the city... he should be able to pretend to have been teleported from outside the city. Dozens of crazy people tried to kill him and there was a literal god flying around spreading mass destruction. I think running out of ground zero to a more secluded spot was well within his right. What was he supposed to do, face down Discord himself? What probation would he even be violating if there was no one around to enforce it? Governments are just collections of people, if the people can't organize themselves, there is no government, and Discord hypnotized their leader to be a dog, so...
Also Prey being unaccounted for despite everyone else being accounted for, does, indeed, not make any sense... Why would it make sense? Discord is a synonym for chaos, he is an actual chaos god, not making sense is his thing. Why would it make sense? Please, explain, why would it make sense?
Ponies are so fucking stupid. Stupid things deserve stupid endings.
I decided to reread the chapter now knowing the information of the whole. It was quite a sweet thing as prey took his time to enjoy himself. I do agree with the sentiment of the chapter a lot to enjoy your highs you need to have the lows.
On a speculation of the Jack in the box I first thought it would be a changeling since thorax in the show could turn into a rock. On the rereading taking in the same mentions of love and prey's information on changelings. I think the box is either something like a changeling kindersnatch/scarecrow or an artifact that functions like a changeling. From what we all should know is that the artifact functions stealthily to protect scenic and by extension carton with the mention of scenic not having to know the cost. Second is that love is important with the constant mention of it at least and it fits a couples home quite nicely.
Besides all that, what is the species of the jester that popped out of the jack in the box?
You had me on that one, all the way untill the end I was almost sure that it was a Changeling. Nice little subversion,
Great chapter
Hey, Prey wasn't a Changeling and he seems to have destroyed the remaining Changelings, two bits added to my jar of correct predictions haha
Overall, an amazing chapter, a very good use of PoVs to keep us suspicious of Prey. Not going into his room, wanting to see the other ponies, “forgetting” where they had met after their first day off… It was enough to keep us wondering…
I liked that we had a little more inside knowledge about the ribbon, we already saw in Mayflower that it had some kind of TK but now it shows to be a lot stronger… The only thing that I still wonder is how he made it, because I remember that to make more powerful runes you needed good materials to work with. 🤔
Now with something completely different: Am I the only one who notices more references to the relationship between Prey and Gloom in the last chapters? That it might become a focus in following chapters or arcs… After all, we still have the vacations to Gloom's clan ahead of us…
There (most likely) goes the second, and most deadly, purge of the changlings. The only question is how it happened, and how did Prey escape.

Luna vs Scenic.
It is just that Luna is so much bigger, grander, can cause so much more damage by her careless attitude.
Scenic is, well, he's much smaller. Petty. Really it's just that he's a coward.
11000380
I'm not gonna spoil what the Jack-In-the-Box is for/what it does. 😉
Species wise though, it's just a pony. It needs to not stand out too much in a city of ponies afterall.
11000327
Stupid people should get stupid endings.
But then along come the Elements of Harmony and fix everything, so they can go back to the way they were before. "Everything's alright now, no need to worry! Your princesses have it all under control!"
The world isn't fair.

10999844
Thank you for the corrections everybody. 😇
10999841
Well, when you put it like that, it was just a bit tempting I'll admit. However I thought, "I've done this twice now in a row. I can't get too complacent in doing the same thing again and again."
10999857
I'm glad you found something you feel fits. There are quite a few songs that I can think of off the top of my head that fit with various points of the story. 🎼
However, as I have noticed with other authors where they add a song link saying, "This fits with this chapter", sometimes it does, but sometimes it doesn't. The thing is, it is all affected by the readers personal music taste, I've found. 😄 If it works though, then great!
10999933
I will not lie to anyone, this was a coin flip on where the story was going to go from here. 😶
It was a crossroads. Either it was a changeling, or it was Prey. I had to think hard where I wanted the story to actually go, and down which path would get me there.
I hope that I made the right choice.

"What happened in those three days?", "What happened to the changelings?", "Was this the second purge?"
All of these questions will be answered in the next chapter, don't worry. 😉
