This is a story about a sheep. A little sheep, locked deep in prison, put there by ponies. He doesn't want to be there, but then he's had to do a lot of things he doesn't want to. It's a shame he deserves to be in there.

You son of a bitch. You actually made me like Luna. Just... wow. I did not think you were gonna be able to thread that needle, but showing that Luna is at least somewhat cognizant of her fuckups is good. Especially good was her response when Prey tries to "forgive" her. It was all fantastic.
But now there's a new princess to hate! Hooray!
Saying that that ending is not good is an understatement. The joy and relief after that trial was amazing but noooo prey can’t have one day where something doesn’t go wrong and this time the wrong is the worst possible scenario!
my brain is kind of just overloaded from what just happened, I think I’m just going to sit in a corner for a week to process this.
Oh come on!
For a nanosecond I actually thought the princess would just not recognize him, it would kind of make sense within the story, have a cliffhanger where they lock eyes and then next chapter have the princess say something like “hello little one”, but alas, prey is destined for misery and such a thing is too lucky for him.
The only possible way for prey to survive this(actually worst case probably just sent to dreverton or Tartarus not death, ponies don’t do execution),
Anyways the only way for prey to reasonably get out fine in my mind would be to kind of show celestia he is changing for the better through crimson.
I’m predicting that celestia is taking prey to a room to see why he is free and stuff, so I think that right before celestia makes her final judgement prey will say something like “at least tell crimson where I’m going” and then celestia being intrigued by what he means.
We thank you for your service is such a great title for this. The thanks prey gets for his service is a sham trial trying to imprison him
My mind is racing at a million miles an hour so here is another half baked prediction
Crimson might wonder what’s taking prey so long and eventually start looking for him, eventually he finds the ribbon and realizes prey is in danger then he tracks Down prey to wherever prey and celestia are.

On the plus side, I feel that's the most you're gonna get in a single chapter, we only had a few in Chapter 1, and I don't remember chapters after that being chock full of 'em. Of course, I didn't remember this one being full of them, reading out loud makes you catch them where your brain would normally skip over.
“'I really want a hot shower. And breakfast. Breakfast then a shower. Breakfast, a shower, Crimson, and some proper sleep. And a whole bag of candy.'
He could face the world again, along with all its uncaring fairness, after that.”
Ha prey didn’t even get that luxury before life spit in his face again

GODDAMMIT
My new and even less baked prediction is that it is possible that Luna will convince celestia that prey has changed, I do highly doubt this will happen though.
Well, at least this cliffhanger doesn't seem to have an immediately anxiety-rushing implication.
I expected a bit more of a sensitive information-rich defense, but I suppose contempt of court via higher ruling works as well. Stays consistent with the portrayal of Luna so far.
The real question now, is what does Celestia have to say, so important that she dropped everything on sight for a confrontation?
Maybe she just sees him as a lost unattended child and is trying to help? Lol
It's hard to tell whether the princesses are decent in this story since every interaction has been viewed through preys perspective. O.o

That actually makes sense. I just reread those few paragraphs and it says " a spark of realization". Realization is not recognition, this could actually be her thinking prey is a lost child, a child being lost is an emergency. Sweeping the palace grounds could be meaning to search for parents. All hope is not lost. Huzzah.
11172123
Let's not forget that Prey looks like he just came back from a war-zone. Dirty, bloodied, scarred: Tia might actually think something attacked him.
Looks like Celestia can detect the runes on Prey. He’s going to have to make up one hell of a backstory for them being there to get out of this one. And likely lose his internal runes if he by some miracle does.
Now Prey is going to have a confrontation with Celestia. Does she know who and what he is?
Aw shiet, here we go again. This time with Sun Wolf
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO YOU EVIL AUTHOR
WHY DO I CALL YOU AN AUTHOR YOUR A VILLIAN WITH THESE CLIFFFHANGGERRR AHHHHAHAAHAHA
This exponential build-up is going to give me a heart attack. You evil, evil villain, what supercomputer have you stolen from the future to force into making amazing fanfic?
Oh right, the only medicine to this illness you have given me is to discuss what could possibly happen in the next chapter.
SHE KNOWS
Of Course she would know!
He was the final bastion of resistance in the resistance!
The last actual conflict Ponykind had fought on large scale!
He killed hundreds and held out for years!
If nothing else she would detect the runes on the ribbon!
How couldn't she know?!
11160220
First off. CALLED IT!
Second. No way she knows. After all these years. No way.
11172209
She's centuries old and Prey was involved in a major historic event that occurs just decades ago, that's not long for her lifespan.
11172211
Let me hope.
11172212
She'd never identify someone from a few decades ago!
Prey is fiiine!
JESUS CHRIST. Prey is NOT having a fun day is he?!
OFC Celestia would know who he is. And as much as I fear for Prey, I REALLY want a conversation between him and somebody who knows what he is.
Wow, I thought the court proceedings would be petty but not only were they petty they also had every possible charge that could be thought of.
Surely Celestia just wants to give an emotionally charged child some tea and an ear to listen? Ahhh, I was naïve for hoping for a bit of relaxation, ever. See you in two weeks.
You had to finish the chapter like that do you Lambsy ?
Everything, the word "emergency" the hasty teleport, the mention of Raven which comes in pair with the Celestia of wisdom, the blue ribbon left behind meaning she purposefully did it, so she knows runes (hinted since the first chapter, they're unknown because they're old, she is older).
I have no words, I can only wait 2 weeks, that's my only solution.
If you wanted the reader to feel what Prey felt during the entire story, that life is not fair and you just have to hold to this tiny raft during the storm.
Here the storm is time, and I'm losing grip, well done 10/10.
well prey get to live for another da......................... shit
nobody expect the celestia inquisition
Strange Happenstance indeed... He can bend probability? Or is he just the right pony in the wrong place? It can make all the difference in the world.
But now... Now things get interesting. Celestia knows SOMETHING. But the question is... What does she know? Does she remember a report about a lamb?
ha call'd it
dam that was a roller coaster
"gotcha" oh for fucks sake
I wonder if Celestia truly remembers who Prey is, or she's just wondering why a little lamb is alone?

I'm glad that my theory seems to have been mostly correct, regarding Luna's, uh, nature. It's pathetic, in the archaic meaning of the word, and ultimately does a great deal to expand upon her character and sympathetic attributes.
That said, Celestia is another fascinating subject. Thus far, the story has done a great job at dividing longevity from eidetic memory, or at least separating the two into independent traits. If we're able to draw upon canon, and can operate on the assumption she is broadly benevolent, we can likewise determine Celestia herself to be learned and powerful, but not omnipotent and certainly not omniscient, and if she does have a similarly eidetic memory as Prey, which is immensely doubtful, she clearly doesn't connect the lines nearly as well; the illegalization of mind magic whilst one of her Captains uses it (Firestrike) and her sister effectively uses it as well demonstrate that quite effectively. Basically? Unless Prey was a force of nature on the level of Discord or Tirek during his 'active' years, I'm not sold on her recalling someone from 50 years ago that, it's implied, she never even saw.
Calm down everyone, it's obviously just Celestia teleporting Prey to a hospital cause he is dirty, has freshly wetted bloddy fur and is scarred all over.
Someone attacked a filly lamb in her palace and that is the emergency.
Celestia is kind ( I presume) so having Prey be terrified and get to know Celestia a bit is what will happen next episode...
Prey and Luna might relate over loss, I don't wanna lose that
Celestia remembers, everyone else who was present for his original trial is dead and gone, but she remembers. Having her have the palace grounds cleared isn't something she does unless she knows there is clear and present danger beyond what a guard or two can deal with. She knows how dangerous Prey is. Luna also must never have mentioned the details of this trial to her sister or about the strange lamb she pulled out of prison to serve her
Still amazed that not one person in that sham trial ever asked the question, what was the original crime Prey was on probation for?
You cant keep toying with our emotions like this
Hurrah! I was right! It has been a looong time since I managed to predict something in a story!
As far as the actual chapter goes, I have to say I'm still solidly in Prey's camp. In the sense that I continue to detest Luna.
After all if we take her at her word and accept that, as she says, "WE ART THE LAW! We were there when thy more worthy ancestors first wrote it from our lips." (and since she's an absolute monarch she's right) then she's ultimately to blame for all the kangaroo court shenanigans we witnessed.
What kind of serious legal system, after all, allows for a subject to be arrested, charged, judged, and sentenced without them ever knowing of what they're accused nor being able to defend themselves? Because obvious corruption aside, a corrupt judge can't simply pull that stuff off without a structure that permits it.
Equestria is a divine-right absolute monarchy where the alicorn sisters have unlimited power. It's no one's fault but their own if the country's legal system is that broken.
And even if one can reasonably assume most if not all of such problems would be the fault of Celestia, Luna is her co-ruler and has been so for probably more than a year by now. She has had ample time to try and deal with the countries real issues, instead of engaging in foreign adventurism or inducting random children into her personal paramilitary police force.
She didn't even manage to pacify/integrate the thestral clans, the most important duty she has had that we know of. A failure which resulted in the deaths of thousands.
That's all to say that the biggest problem with Luna, imo, is that she's an absolute monarch that neither deserves the power she has nor uses it responsibly. And that hasn't changed one iota.
11172292
Or how a lamb could perform a crime heinous enough to be sentenced to their maximum security prison with a life sentence for what is apparently sixty years now.. probably cause none of them thought to even look into from what prison or for why he was there, just that he was on probation and that was enough for them.
It would seem the Sunwolf has remembered her Prey.
Please God, make the next 2 weeks go past super quickly!!!
11172296
Ya’ll be overthinking too much
11172297
It seems strange that theprision doesn't seem to care he was never returned to them either. They may have let him go at request of the Solar Guard to aid in a case, but they had to expect him back long ago. Why has there been no reports of a jailbreak?
On a very outside theory; maybe he had an official length of sentence, and he actually served that. Sheep are only supposed to live so long, and if they gave him a length longer than his life expectancy, they would have expected him to die and not be an issue. When he was still alive, they kept holding him because they didn't know what else to do, but this put them in a very compromised position by legal standards. He could have been technically free to go and no one ever told him. They might have just happy someone had come and taken the problem out of their lives when the solar guard came for him, and promptly purged the records of him so they would not be liable for holding him when he was already time served.
11172118
Yup, Pray is one of a kind unreliable narrator.
the worst part is that he sweep you in his world view and you start to see everyone the way he see's them.
Luna as an Immortal and pathetic alicorn of great power that doesn't care about anyone or anything, but the truth is Luna care too much about a lot of things and deeply misunderstands other ponies. Luna is kind of the victim here lmao.
11172304
At this point, I hate Luna so much that I'm going to find fault in anything good she does. Irrespective of how much overthinking or rationalizing it may or may not require.Well scheise, didn't expect this encounter to happen yet
Yep, this was gonna happen inevitably.
I fear the end is nigh.
On one hand, Celestia could have left the Ribbon behind because she understood what it was. On the other, she wouldn't leave something so dangerous just lying around. Prey could have enchanted it to not be teleported, but why leave his only weapon behind? Should it only stay behind in very specific circumstances, and then what would be his plan? Something utterly desperate and unlikely, I'd imagine.
You monster! You can't keep playing with my emotions like this and not give me a way to hurl money violently at your face! Open a tip jar or something!
Fuck you for that cliffhanger ending again.
Also great chapter.
Hahaha! I was right! The Fells send their regards!
Finally, a redemption for Luna! Maybe now she'll reconsider her actions towards Prey and try to be a bit more kinder, and more generous. Maybe.
And of course you follow up the previous cliffhanger with one ten times bigger! What the actual fuck, it's Celestia! And she says something is wrong!
I bet she immediately assumed Prey was lost without his parents, lol.
