This is a story about a sheep. A little sheep, locked deep in prison, put there by ponies. He doesn't want to be there, but then he's had to do a lot of things he doesn't want to. It's a shame he deserves to be in there.

First!
Sorry, I realized I've never called first before, it's like a requirement. What better story to call my first (And only) first than on Prey and a Lamb?
well it would appear ether something from the towns long forgotten past has dragged itself from the surf, or our local cult tried to sic our beast of the week on the squad.
Though I would not be surprised if the Border Rangers got a similar visit, probably dragged off their injured comrade.
So we have a mystery symbol that the whole town uses... A missing weather family that left their youngest offspring behind...
And something was trying to sneak into their room at night. The ISND just can't catch a break.
Hopefully backup arrives in time! But at the very least, Prey's traincar full of sewer monster vines has arrived.
I smell Insmouth and I couldn't be happier
Hmm. Since you mentioned that the window was missing the symbol, Iβm guessing that the symbols actually do repel marefolk or whatever creature tried to break in.
Uh huh, definitely Port of Innsmouth.

I think it's time that Prey figured out just what that symbol is. This sort of occult stuff is right up his alley, and I really look forward to him trying to warn the squad about it without revealing how he knows.
I really enjoyed the moment for Lily and how she now gets through life relying on the words of the ISND. It brings impact for the actions that they have done in the world.
Kind of surprised that there were no clues, but honestly that is how the ISND is. So many more mysteries and everyone being left with knowing something is wrong, but not what it is. I wonder if the other guards and the little Pegasus would come to face the same thing.
Gloom called for backup. Prey called for backup, too.
Reinforcments are here I guess, not the kind others expect, but they're still here.
Well then, no big reveal in this chapter, we're still at the planning phase where they're frustrated by the lack of evolution.
Heh, expecting reinforcments from Canterlot, how cute.
Now, this chapter heavily insist on merfolks and the charm, what could they be ?
I think it's nothing but a mark that says "good guy here", was it maybe a thief ? Now, I guess their room was located on the ground floor, otherwise Prey would have said something about it.
On the happier side, Gloom is set on making Prey visit his clan, this could be "fun" for once to have an arc where he isn't risking his life over and over, we'll see.
Great chapter, the next one will be a christmas present of sort right ? Merry merry.

"It'll be nice to actually get reinforcements."
"I agree, Prey. Extra guards will help us out."
"Huh? Oh right, guards. Yes. Guards. It will be nice to have guards, that exactly is what I meant."
"..... Prey why are there zombies in the streets?"
11081577
If Prey says itβs not magic then it isnβt. So it should be more along the lines of a mark of recognition whose meaning was lost to the ages for the inhabitants (maybe not all). Given it was not mentioned when visiting the Weather Tower it could be tied to the causes of Altoβs ailment, the unknown visitor, the weather mismanagement or the Heightβs family βairheadednessβ. Inclusive or, mind you.

weekWednesday for dinner?Hmm, I'm starting to think that those blue runes might be part of some old ancient pact with something, something along the terms of Lambs blood over the boor frame of the house. It might be that whatever this is made a deal not to directly molest those who ware the symbol or enter through one protected by it and the towns folk have simply long forgotten since. I'm still modestly certain of a siren being involved, mostly due to the distant songs on the wind and intense emotions, but I'm starting to wonder if there might be something like sahuagin in the mix as well.
11081646
Don't forget, Prey might know alot of dark and dangerous magic, but he doesn't know all of it.
His reaction to finding the Mayflower Warlocks book was how he could make it much more dangerous, not "Oh I already know all of this".
He can detect magic with his runes, but who's to say there aren't forms of magic too subtle to detect?
For example didn't directly detect the magic when the Changeling trying to infiltrate the Night Guard tried to modify his emotions.
11081667
Yep a key thread through this entire tale is that Prey, while highly skilled and dangerous (if not outright lethal) in his own right, there are forces that work far more subtly, wielding far more power than he has at his disposal currently.
Fighting prey is the most dangerous when he has time to prepare. Often, he is capable enough to make time.
Lol, this is basically the equivalent of everyone showing guns under or next to their beds.
Thanks for the chapter.
Am I missing something, there's Crimson, Gloom, Alto, and the Sheriff?
Marine life, airheadedness, questionable weather manipulation... Really makes me think of the hippogriffs, honestly.
Alternatively, could be that Prey orchestrated part of this fiasco to get close enough to really study the Cliffs of Dove. Or maybe there really is a cult and things are gonna go (more) lovecraftian.
So, not planning on talking to Prey.
Hmm, who could that be?
11081667
These being master-crafted to have a magical effect without awakening Preyβs magic-induced tingling is highly unlikely. They are very numerous and in very different materials. This would require someone really good at enchantment and in this town it is doubtful there is one.
Aaa they're always over so fast. Thanks for the update, as usual.
The heights didn't have no fishpony protection I see. Then again those probably don't exist, right.
But then again something did manage to make the heights family ignore the only purpose of their life. They also seemingly managed to protect and hide their son from getting found and influenced but could not safe themselves.
But who or what tries to get into a room with three serious guards? Assassins? Monsters? Or is it the Neighbourhood watch trying to prevent the guards from reporting crimes in their city?
Boy Γ΄ boy an I exited to find out
11081832
Who's to say it's a masterwork?
Just something... different.
Something too far gone from the usual spectrum of magic to be detected through the usual ambient magic detecting runes.
Prey couldn't detect changeling Emotional manipulation with his runes, he detects active and immediate effects, not subtle and passive ones.
So far, with the whole shipment, my guess is that it's from Lemon. Prey had possibly wanted extra... Materials, but it's only arrived now. Odd, as that would mean Lemon would've had to gather all the material and sent it the day after Prey left for it to arrive on time.
11081689
Definitely lethal.
If Prey wanted (And had enough time) he could likely burn down half of Equestria.
The Reaper King could've taken on a battalion, imagine how much more powerful Prey could make it?
How many more he could make?
He could mindwipe ponies as he goes so his skills are everywhere at once, each individual working to build more Reapers and Reaper Kings, complete with an army of wickerplant thralls.
It's not just his skills in one form of dark magic that makes him dangerous, it's how many forms of dark magic he knows, and how they'd all tie together.
The defensive power of runes, the subtle nature of voodoo, immediately lethal alchemy of all sorts, and the exponentially growing nature of mind magic.
Enough time and he could make Equestria burn
But then again, he's not that person anymore, he wants to be better, sadly his skillset isn't quite as good at being good as it is doing unspeakable acts of evil, but sometimes doing a little bit of evil is what you need to do alot of good.
At first I thought the kid was possibly brainwashed, but turns out he was just super dense...
Since Prey has such good hearing, could he use echolocation if he had to?
It'd certainly be an interesting application of his hearing to get around in the dark, and not far from reality since with practice even people can echolocate to an extent.
Though I suppose the noise could give away his position, it'd be less conspicuous than a light.
11081721
I-
β¦Ok nvm, Prey would absolutely want to get his hooves on a gun.
β¦Provided he could use it.
Maybe it's not exactly mermares, but deep ones?
I'm getting a real Shadow over Innsmouth feel here.
I wonder, where Lily's magic goes? Meldwood healed her, but continues to drain mana with no visible effect. There should be some conservation laws in magic theory that forbid energy from disappearing into nothing.
11081885
Direct conflict is rarely a smart choice. Would be much easier to make large quantities of something phosgen-like (no odor, several hours before simptoms, no known treatment), have brainwashed ponies distribute it and release simultaneously, for example. Or assassinate Celestia by taking control over Spike to teleport orichalcum bomb, while DDOSing her intuition with some unicorns. Something that doesn't require introducing oneself as major power to be opposed and defeated.
11081649
It was part of a written letter, so I took bits like that as LP having the character have his own idiosyncrasies. That is, not being the kind of person to have perfect grammar and spelling as heβs not really putting too much thought or effort into it, which is kind of the point. So no gigajannie must-be-perfect mode on that part, and leave it much as I received it :P
11081770
Darn, I made a mental note to double-check that part and it slipped by me
Well, Iβm at least in my own set target of max one error per chapter still, so thatβs good. Thanks for pointing it out :)
11081770
No, you're right. Good catch, thanks. π
11081620
You always manage to find something that would be hilarious if it were to happen.
11081795
Not yet at any rare. Perhaps when he and the others gets back from their little jaunt through Haven Hay.

Or (and I'm not confirming or denying anything here), it could just be that the blue sigils throughout the town really are just local good luck charms. Maybe. After all, people who live by the deep dark sea have some strange beliefs, don't they? π
11081989
"Herp-ey-derp! Clouds! Weather! Rain! Me flying pony!" π
11081563
Rather fishy, yes.
π¦π¦π¦πππ³π¦π‘π¬ππ¦
Why do I feel like this town is gonna be a fishing hamlet situation like Bloodborne?
Prey didn't seem to note that the colt was brainwashed in anyway. Which if he was, Prey probably would've taken note of even on cursory observation as the resident brainy magic expertTM. But the ending of the last chapter was still ominous, and his skittishness borders on mental illness.
Maybe the reason he and the rest of the Heights are that way isn't normal. They've been drained of their intelligence, or rather, the ability to focus on things. Their mind have been made fuzzy. The reason Prey missed it is because it's either not a method of mind magic that he's ever seen employed or considered using, or that it wasn't done by regular magic, but through more, err, for lack of a better term, supernatural means, i.e. the difference between a unicorn spell and a windigo haunting.
11082408
I though of something else, what if the no-magic zone has a negative effect ?
As in, getting too close all the time will just drain you of more than magic ? Or the constant danger railroaded this family to be obsessed with flight to an unhealthy degree ? (maybe a trauma ?)
He doesn't look stupid per say, just overly sheltered to the point where external authority is just background noise.
If so, here comes the big mystery, how come a family so hellbent on flying had to deal with a walking creature ?
What a twist! My mind was turning 140 per minute, thinking about the state of the teenage pegasus colt.
And as it turned out, he was just stupid.
HA! The author wins, yet again.
I'd like to say yet again that this story is easily one of the best I've ever read here
Praise the author \ o /
11082367 I think part of it is tapped by the plant to keep it healthy and alive, whilst the rest goes to reinforce the rest of her body, so the meldwood doesn't spread or take over her body. Prey mentioned it usually overtakes the host, but it hasn't done that to Lily yet.
Okay! That hit WAY harder than it was any right to. Letβs GO LILY!!!
Clip clip clip and a trim trim trim~
Keep the meldwood twigs at bay~
Today will be a very good day!
Why you gotta go and make me like Lilly? I don't want to like Lilly. How dare you, author!
On the other hand, it really is revealing just how bad the the Day Guards are that they just stopped caring about things like "justice", "due process" or "duty" the second things got hard for them personally. And I can't imagine that the impression either side has of the other is going to improve. The day guards think that the ISND are cold, secretive and only out for themselves, while any report the ISND gives will prolly paint them as incompetent and insubordinate at best, and willfully abusive of their authority at worst.
11083555
i dont mind, go ahead!
11083633
Both Lily and Day Guards are product of equestrian society; very few can imagine life being unfair if it was never bad to them personally. And im not sure if Day Guard definition of "justice" and "duty" covers situations when someone can't be saved - of course they are disoriented, everything they were taught and their moral code just stopped working.
