This is a story about a sheep. A little sheep, locked deep in prison, put there by ponies. He doesn't want to be there, but then he's had to do a lot of things he doesn't want to. It's a shame he deserves to be in there.

Rejoice mine brothers!
Yay chapter!
11065190
Yes, since if you throw some pennies to the people you have chained up it is absolutely something better.
Hah, of course he found a family member, and it's a child.
Well, good chapter, for once Prey wasn't in the line of fire, the royal guards took the heat, attempted something, then failed, the leader might be angry but that's about it.
Funny on how it's just a lighter version of the Lilly's event, but no meldwood this time sir.
Now they may face some difficulties in getting their backpacks, because maybe those oafs might see the ISND under an unfriendly light, I hope not, those are important pieces of equipment.
And I don't hope they start to kick the backpacks, there's a bomb in one of them, and Prey will be blamed for this again.
Now that's out of the way, maybe we'll manage to solve this mystery, pehaps the sheriff might have some use too since he isn't out of the loop, it would be nice to have a friendly face in one of those missions for once.
Yay chapter
Love this Harbour Arc, no chtulu monsters and the Village is not full of crazy Cultists aswell so far
Idiot Border Rangers make for good companions to frustrate us and the ISND, but I wonder how they will act when their pony doesn't pull through.
Always exited for some Prey healing skills, but i suppose Crimson or Gloom would have to be hit by lighgtning for that.
Thanks for the chapter and extired where this foal with absent parents leads us
I wonder what fate will befall the other royal guards, because there's no way that they're going to survive whatever hell is coming for them.

Ah yes, the tradition of spending an entire day with the page open... How did it start again?
11065508
Oddly enough, this time it was pure coincidence. I ate a donut, and decided it was a good time to read, so I checked if it was out. Usually you qould be right.
Sheriff and Nimbus: "LET'S MURDER THOSE FUCKERS!"
Alto Heights: "Sorry sir, mom and dad didn't leave any bits to buy any cookies from you. But, uh, can I please have one? Please?"
I absolutely love this outcome; stupid ponies screw themselves over, and further just prove that.... something something, ponies are stupid and too reactionary.
It’s Time. hm, wonder who alls gonna die this time? trail blazer Definitely as mans is already 80% dead, maybe the rest of the border rangers too. i can easily imagine them getting cucked by some monstrous leviathan while prey just watches like “this was entirely preventable.”
mind magic?
11065566
It's probably too early to guess, but your comment got me thinking and I'm calling it now.
Dr doodle us suspicious. It's such a small detail, but it sticks out a bit.
The ponies usually answered the questions they were given, except those relating to heights family, where they usually dodged the question. The only other significant time it happens is with doodle.
It's also such a small and strange detail. Now, at all times he is not there.
I'm very unsure of it. But call it a hunch.
I grow more and more suspicious of what might be lurking beneath the waves, on the island, and perhaps in the town. However, it'd be nice if, as Gloom said, they aren't too late this time. Not only to give the ISND some relief (and clout for a job well done), but also to show up the border rangers. I honestly want them to watch as our favorite trio fixes everything like the embodiments of awesomeness that they are, and be forced to wallow in the knowledge that they were totally useless.
Also, looks like mind magic is afoot.
11065580
Huh. I never actually picked up on that. Something is afoot! Ahoof! Whatever.
11065429
Looks like normal ponies are not much safer than crazy cultists; at least you're not supposed to treat cultists kindly and protect them from each other. And Prey seriously has to talk to someone about changelings, his denial is getting worse.
Some points about Trail Blazer's injury: 1) lightning strikes rarely cause internal burns (on humans at least), its usually superficial+bone fractures and cardiac arrest 2) if by some reason internal burn is the case, it can cause dehydration and bacterial infection, like radiation sickness minus contamination and cancer. How Prey even knows about it, but pegasi, who supposed to deal with lightning all the time, don't?
Born too late to meet Jesus
Born too early for FTL
Born just in time for this
Once again you leave me no errors to feast upon. Still super excited, it's looking more and more like I called it with my Siren Cult theory. Unless I'm seeing what I want to see. Either way your story continues to be enjoyable and of such quality that I believe it would be a major hit if a couple names were changed and marketed.
11065429
*Waggles finger* Don't be so sure, the sheriff had something under his clothes, sounds like a cult symbol to me, and Prey has Deep Horror in him so another being here causing the anti-magic wouldn't be a stretch.
11065572
Okay, listen, hear me out now. What if... evil cliffs?
Okay so the Sheriff starts going off on this rambling about Marefolk completely out of the blue. It's straight up unprompted.
But what's noticeable to me is that he doesn't put a lot of emphasis on it being Marefolk specifically. He says Marefolk, but he talks about it in a non-definitive way. "Marefolk is as good an explanation as any" His rambling is more about some hypnotic 'song' coming from the cliffs.
I'm going to need more evidence before I start putting together anything conclusive. But speculating based more off of vibes that I'm getting, I'd start with how everyone's looking for a perpetrator. There's this insistence that somebody's got to be responsible. But I get the feeling that there isn't a specific person, but not because it's just a regular disaster. Something greater is bubbling under the surface. But this something is maybe more like a force and not an individual.
This arc is set in a coast town, which instantly invokes the imagery of Lovecraft and Deep Ones. But honestly I'm getting more Junji Ito vibes. Particularly something like the Enigma of Amigara Fault, Army of One, or Uzumaki.
We have these cliffs and a mysterious isle that nobody has ever set foot on. You might be tempted to think that the cliffs just have some special magic nullifying ore in them, but that doesn't explain why they also break apart any device that goes through them. It feels more like they're cursed. But if they're cursed, it's scary to imagine who or more like what may have produced such a powerful magic, since it's simultaneously so impenetrable and covers such a large area. And now we're hearing of some siren song coming from the cliffs that has perhaps brain washed this colt and his family.
I have a bad feeling about the sheriff and the remaining border rangers. Who knows but the author what lows they will reach in the pursuit of their “justice”? I have a bad feeling that the town is going to tear itself apart before the end of it all.
That “sheriff” is giving me an even worse feeling; like someone who’s about to go and raise hell.
11065625
I try :P
I do wonder if the airheadness that ponies are seeing is due to mind magic or just a quirk that goes with the family. You never know with ponies.
Also congrats to crimson for grabbing that kid while he could which protected the kid no doubt and unfortunately leads to a trail to trouble for the ISND. I am always looking forward to more of the story.
At this point in the story, I too am starting to believe that the ISND is cursed. After they complete this case, if the Border Rangers survive, they will be thrown once again into guard politics due to turning said Border Rangers in for misconduct.
Basically, they just can’t win.
Alto has a paragraph of diolog and he already has me on the Heights family side. That's the power of cute.
What are the chances this whole situation is just a nice but dim pegasus family, being way in over their heads, after a national disaster, and the rest of the town having too high expectations, creating conflict?
...yeah pretty low
Also Earth Ponies do the most crime. It's kinda funny.
Mind Magic, a scripted response no doubt given the situation, not an alternate personality, like Prey could make, but no less dangerous.
If that's not mind magic, I don't know what is.
Just a quibble, but isn't "marefolk" a bit... Well, its a pun that works too well? It works for merfolk, sure, but taking it on its face it could also translate to "womanfolk", which while a bit folksy is stil a thing people say.
And good god, what a terrible showing for Celestia's guard. They didn't even have the good sense to be ashamed at what they'd done.
11065882
ISND is cursed or Prey is cursed?
Life has been running a thorny stick up Prey's behind for half a century before Gloom and Crimson ever showed up. When they went off to do international crimes in Griffin country, they actually succeeded, aside from Crimson getting sick. But when Prey is there... boom salt den, boom Mayflower, boom vigilante cult, boom Changelings, boom Discord, boom whatever the hell's going on now.
Seems to me like Prey is just a bad luck charm.
Personally, I'm excited for mind shenanigans, and have been for a while, because Prey is going to have to dance around the fact that he's a mind control expert. Having to balance being effective against such an insidious threat with not revealing that you are one such insidious threat, is a setup that's just totally ripe with potential.
11065640
Oh, the sheriff is about to go alright, something tells me.
Go six feet under in the near future that is.
He's an expendable and overconfident pony who makes himself disliked as soon as he shows up. In "Prey and a Lamb" world, he's as good as dead. Question is just when and how.
Or he'll turn around, get a bit smarter and help out our heros in the end. Who knows.
Also, mobs. Such mindless fun.
This Arc's mix of.. em.. "human" errors, for the lack of a better or ponyfied term, and usual magic mystery is going to be absolutely delicious.
11066010
I think heroes is the wrong word here, a theme in this story is about how being a hero is stupid, and gets you into more trouble.
Like when Lilly charged into battle back in Mayflower, only to immediately become a burden by getting herself wounded.
Well, the Border Rangers managed to screw up hard in only a few hours. That is impressive!
I am worried about the child though... Why was he there alone. I've got a bad feeling about this.
Say it with me now; “Play stupid games, win stupid prizes”.
11065536
...
Let's not throw away the entire species of ponies on the same boat.
And forget about those who live outside of Equestria.
11066066
I wouldn't be preoccupied with him being alone, more tthe fact that he is repeating a phrase that doesn't have sense in a circumstance where it doesn't have to be said, clearly he is under hypnosis or mentally controlled, my bits go to weird fish ponies that pray to an ancient sea God.
11065638
Whats the bet that there is some kind of lovecraftian monster either on the isle or down in the cliffs? Underwater trenches sounds like the perfect place for some horror beyond our understanding to hide, Would also explain the ''Mind Magic'' since most lovecraftian monsters are psychic in one way or the other, but we'll see.
11066367
I wonder... It might be those ancient sea creatures that lure sailors to their death with the magic of their voices.
What were their names again? So far, we know of only three, but they aren't in the same dimension as this story.
Perhaps, close relatives... or a sub-species of those creatures. Who eat their prey instead of feeding on their negative emotions.
11066377
Or maybe he's simply in shock and in denial from witnessing his parent's demise, to then having himself locked up inside the Weather tower for a few days before the events that we have just witnessed.
11066424
Syrens, but no those just made everyone mad to feed off of them, yes a mob in the city would be a feast but those three were banished so having more pop up would be weird in my opinion. It is although probable that them being another subspecies that feeds off of flesh instead of emotion it would be very thematic. For now I still belive though that the Pegasi were just a victim of some sort of cult, the town is unknowingly already in it and everything goes back to the inaccessible island we're no one ever set hoof on.
11066433
It just confirms that at the end of the day, before they had even set hoof on the train, Prey knew, on in instactual level, that they would have to cross the sea toward the source of this madness. The island.
I wouldn't be surprised if all the ISND members knew that as well. From the moment they heard about the most dangerous of places in the location they were in: the cellar, the warlock's lair, the Wolf Wood.
Outside of the protection of the Elements of Harmony, it seems as if Karma was over-correcting the scales of balance, by simply throwing bad and worst case scenarios unto our group.
... Just to even the scale of good fortune, that the ponies were taking for granted (before Discord appeared).
11066463
The universe seems to be able to balance everything by having the edges be extremely dangerous and prone to cataclysm other than harboring the most dangerous creatures, the places that are for all intent and purposes impossible to claim. Basically everything that can be lethal is and it is on the edges, the island and the deeper green being just an example
Many stories tend to leave readers on cliffhangers but this one in particular just fills me with growing dread that gnaws at me to keep coming back to make sure that I wasn't mixing up the actual tale with bouts of morbid imaginary scenarios it keeps instilling as I read.
This story might just be an actual eldritch horror that truly sinks it's teeth into you and I'm surprisingly okay with that.
Arrest them warts them all!
….I don’t know what this means but, pulling out the hypnotized/moldy terrifying child is an excellent choice
11066485
That is pretty much it to a 'T'. In the heartland of Equestria, it is all Harmony and Rainbows. (literally, most of the time).
All of the horrible, nitty gritty stuff? It's pushed to the edges of Equestria. And there it waits. And festers.
11066759
Thank you, I'm glad it appeals to that sense of slow-building suspension. (Although I'm attributing at minimum half of my 'writing skill' 🤣 to happy luck)
11066427
11066273
11065935
11065900
11065586
11065572
As to what has happened with Alto Heights, of the Heights family, lone weather team of Haven Hay, find out next time! (I'm sorry don't beat me please. The cliffhangers just happen like this, I swear.)
11065423
Kicking the bone rot mine would be funny, I'll definitely agree to that.
11066048
Damn. I knew I should have put heroes in quotation marks... Or just used the word protagonists.
Yet, aren't they almost always unwillingly roped into a role of savior of the day, and things DO go badly because of it?
11065638
🤐 (I'm not allowed to say what is true and what isn't from that)
11065882
Things never go right for them. Prey being cursed really is starting to look more and more like it's a real thing. (Except, according to Twilight Sparkle, curses aren't real)
11065625
Cult. Superstition. Good-luck charm.
It could be any. It could be none. It could be all.
new chapter yes. love the read keep up the good work.
Love it so much !!!
