This is a story about a sheep. A little sheep, locked deep in prison, put there by ponies. He doesn't want to be there, but then he's had to do a lot of things he doesn't want to. It's a shame he deserves to be in there.

Congrats on a million words. Should have a million more views considering how great this is too.
Happy 1M!
Good grief, 1 million words. Didja know that the entire Lord of the Rings books is only around 580k? The Bible has around 790k. The Harry Potter books have around a million... but the world building is terrible, so let's arbitrarily subtract a few 100k.
You buried those posers. Stay awesome.
The encounter with Rising Star was intense, and I can't wait to see another one try that on Prey and only get fury and murderous intent instead of compliance.
... and dammit Felyawn. I really wanted him to be a chessmaster.
The big 1-000-000 π₯³
Congrats man!
The interaction between the mimic and Prey was interesting. A constantly-evolving battlefield of actions and reaction, both knowing what is happening but both keeping the conflict under the pretence of an interview- a play on top of a war. Prey reacting to and overcoming each and every new danger, the mimic knowing that he has and changing tactics, it was all very fun. Even better, Prey now knows their tricks and how to beat them. Prey knew what was going on, the mimic knew, Prey knew the mimic knew, the mimic knew Prey knew, and they both knew the other knew that they knew what was happening, and neither wished to break character. Interesting that the intent to kill is an emotion, too, though intent in general I suppose is an emotion one feels and therefore the intent to kill would be a flavour of that.
I wish I could like this story again
I wasn't even expecting this update yet but here we are!
Quick question, how many would you say Prey killed during the resistance war? It was likely mentioned at some point but I don't remember, I'd imagine it would be somewhere a bit over a hundred considering his capabilities.
Congratulations on the 1 mil! Hmm, Things are getting very interesting, I wonder If Prey is fast enough can he arrive at ponyville and snatch the elements before the night guards arrive?
A million words! I can't believe I've been here long enough for even a quarter of that, but I'm so glad I found your story! It's seriously my second favorite book in existence, right behind a published book.
We all expected that, right?
I also suspected that Crimson and Gloom would discover the plot. I did not, however, expect Prey to basically do nothing but warn the ponies. It makes sense, but it is sadly the boring option. Fitting for Prey, I suppose.
Now they know Prey knows about their existence. I suspect the changelings will try to skirt his "hunting grounds" and try to do the wedding plot without attracting his ire.
Very tense! Can't wait for me.
Oh damn! A million words already?! This is the longest story I've ever read, and it doesn't even feel like it.
Another great chapter, seems like another climax is coming soon, this one feels different though, can't really explain it.
The scene with the I review was astonishing. So tense and just a pleasure to read.
You have writing skill the likes of which I rarely ever see even in professional works, you really spoil us with the quality quantity and frequency.
It's really insane that you can realease such great and we'll written chapter with the length of a behemoth at such a staggering rate.

As he's a threat and an unknown, they instead might send a peace offering, a negotiator, or maybe even a hit squad as opposed to ghosting him. Either way, he is about to live in interesting times once again. I wager that what'll end up happening is he'll be the one to notice Cadence is Chrysalis, but barring a few hostile emotions towards her he'll just go his separate way. Until
Lamb's Preyfate decides he be on the front lines against her, anyway. How great would it be if he ended up helping stop Canterlot's destruction and saving an alicorn, and doing it with the partnership of the Sun Wolf's private unicorn student? The inner turmoil and incandescent wrath towards her as he's playing the part of an innocent helper would be extremely fun to read. Especially if Chryssy tries to point out what she sees as her new friend wouldn't even spit on her if she was on fire, and she brushes it off as more trickery. That would be diverging a lot from canon, though. Still, it never hurts to dream
Welp, I-, I mean this pegasus fellow seems nice right ? What a handsome dude, most likely very competent and innocent !
It's interesting to see how things evolve, but now the changelings know a simple night guard can sniff them out, he was obviously panicking at the presence of anger, maybe it hurts them ? I hope not, otherwise Prey would just need to walk around to beat them all. That would be quite funny, but it won't happen without tears and despair ya ?
I even wonder how he'll salvage this situation, he fled from the only office around where an "innocent lamb" is working, who would be scared of such a cute innocent lad ?
Might be funny, I almost hope he'll be a character.
And in the end he'll go deep into it, playing hero and try to fix this stuff, another good point for him when he'll be discovered.
It was great and a pretty fun chapter all things considered, I'm glad I was able to catch this one this fast.
Jolly good and thank you for it.

I thought of those options, too. So we've managed to narrow down the options to: the changelings do something, or they don't.
In my completely and utterly unbiased opinion, I hope the changelings are friendly with Prey. Specifically, that no more changelings die.
10857406
I got the general impression that presumably nobody had ever noticed what was happening before, let alone was able to resist and become even more enraged against them, and the mimic was panicking because of it. I agree it will be interesting to see if Prey decides to say to Screech 'keep him as far away from the ranks as equinely possible, send all new recruits to me to vet, and if anyone changes behaviour significantly on short notice let me know' or decides to let him in to the ranks to keep an eye on.
10857413
Truly, we are bastions of thought
10857340
I would estimate between 35-70 guards and our favourite author updates once every 2 weeks on fridays or Saturdays depending on chapter length or other factors such as his artworks
10857371
I sure hope they avoid it
10857400
That would be pretty cool ngl, but very unlikely given Prey's personality
This chapter is intense and nobody(nopony) event got hurt
10857413
I hope that as well. The Changelings and Prey would make great allies, not only do their goals align but their abilities complement each other. To the point that even a simple conversation between both parties should reveal that both are better off as friends than enemies. The problem is getting them to actually engage in some form of talk in the first place, that and Crimson.
A Changeling victory is the most realistic path Prey has to regain his freedom as of right now, I wonder if he would be willing to give up on that opportunity if Crimson asked him to?
WOWZA stuffβs going down it seems. who wants to bet that arson attack was the griffins, trying to distract the guards?
10857400
Your forgetting Discord came before the Canterlot Wedding. Unless Prey's actions accelerated the changeling's plans, I'm expecting Discord's appearance to have several major consequences. I don't know how or when, but I'm betting it'll affect the Changelings somehow...
Unless one of the princesses suddenly became be very dumb and decides that no further action to national security is needed now that their perfect Elements of Harmony have dealt with Discord.
Since Prey is taking bodies yet to be Cremated, what would he do about ponies who want the ashes?
There's always a bigger fish. The mimics now know some of Prey but Prey has learned some of their powers.
Here comes a chaos down in Ponyville. In the end Prey didn't get to make a decision, Gloom and Crimson got 'er done.
Congrats LP on hitting a million words, I've loved every one!
Congrats on reaching 1m words!! This story never ceases to amaze me!
Happy 1M words My love
IIRC, the show doesn't specify but most bronies assume that changelings can sense emotions. If so, it would be literally impossible to lie to them & all but impossible to deceive them
Remember: This story is tagged alt-universe, and we the readers have yet to see how that comes into play.
Personally, I'm expecting everything to fly off the handle at any moment.
10857549
Yup, and Prey most likely thanks them because of that.
Haha, this reminds me of national treasure. We are going to steel the declaration of independence to stop it from being stolen by someone else.
Thanks for the chapter!
You know Prey is pretty incessant that Gossamer is dead and they were different people. His mind has been described as so alien it's inherently painful to others. Lotta weird stuff in the Deeper Green too.
Who would win?
an organized pre-prepared infiltration attempt by a shapeshifter
or
one intimidatin' boi
10857340
10857419
Traps. Lots and lots of traps. Bone rot traps, poison traps, spike pit-fall traps, deadfall traps, all of the traps. π
But as to a number? Prey doesn't have an accurate number. Not because of some dumb nonsense about killing to many to count, but because he killed via traps. He doesn't know how many of his traps succeeded, how many Guards died in each trap, or if the trap was discovered and disarmed first.
At a guess though, anywhere from 60-100 Border Guards seems about right. He was at it for 2 whole years while hiding out in the Deeper Green.
10857331
Maybe not so much killing intent. I think that's more the person on the other end is perceiving you as a threat. Murderous rage though? That's certainly a thing, yes.

10857257
10857285
1,000,000 words finally arrived, yes. Thank you very much for the congratulations. I'm much more glad that you thought it was worth reading through all 1 million words though. π
10857371
10857406
10857413
And so the Cold War between the two forces beneath the mountain both just jumped forwards.
Where will this end up though?
10857762
Lots and lots of WeIrd things.
Maybe we'll see some more of them.
Maybe we won't.
10857633
10857581
10857549
Again, thank you to you too.
10857543
He replaces them with an urn full of finely ground wood ash. Ash is pretty much ash, after all.
10857477
Or would Prey be physically capable of unbending his paranoia far enough to be able to try working alongside another force to achieve his own freedom? Another very important consideration. So far, Prey's paranoia has hurt him as often as it has helped him.
10857400
The Royal Wedding is still a little ways-away, but we will see what happens closer to the time with the build up.
Thanks for editing, once again. π
10857406
An amusing idea, certainly. It would be an interesting contrast.
The outwardly cute lamb : Utterly horrible on the inside.
A monstrous bug on the outside : Just trying to spread love with a heart of gold.
10857340
10857419
I think Prey killed several hundred people during his pre-prison life. He's been free for about 3 months and has a kill count around one hundred already. He hasn't even been trying to commit mass murder, just stay undercover and live.
Can someone explain the ending of this chapter to me, I don't understand
Congrats on a million words! Great update, as always. Looking forward for resolution of that little EoH heist
10857305
βI recognize that you stated your opinion, but given that itβs a stupid-ass opinion, I have elected to ignore it.β
JK man, like whatever you like
The griffons have made a monumental blunder. The elements are still being held in Celly's personal vault. It was dumb of them to not confirm the whereabouts of said items before making their move, unless it's their intention to abduct one or more of the bearers and hold them as a bargaining chip to attempt to force the princesses to fork over the items. Either way is going to fail, because though the griffons may have some pegasus-level magic(cloud walking, weather manipulation), they are no match for an alicorn.
Also congrats on breaking one mil.
Error Report
As the sun slowly began its decent, (descent)
This was all far too above his head. (swap words)
And Prey hate hated hated pain.
I'll add my congrats to the pile of them in the comments. Not bad for a five book series. I would also love to throw my love of the Changeling v Prey scene, shame I'm to tired to really expound on how much I love it. (It's 5am here and I'm beat)
10857900
Thank you, as always, for the assisting with errors.
And thank you too. π
10857815
Well the thing is, he was up against trained soldiers, you can't commit mass murder on soldiers the same way you can, say, a pack of diamond dogs, or Canterlot, not to mention he's had time to prepare this time around, while he was fighting the resistance war he may have had 2 years but I bet he was never in the same place for more than 2 days.
Now he is incredibly dangerous, but he was also 1 person covering an entire forest by himself with little time to stay in one place, I don't think he would have had the time to breed veropedes, or make a nigh impenetrable fortress of dark magic runes, or make a sprawling network of wicker plants and shamblers, no, just things like mass produced bone rot mines and hastily built runic traps set up in patrol routes that prey could find, he certainly couldn't have trapped the whole forest like in Vietnam.
Prey likely caused the deaths of hundreds considering how deadly the forest itself was, but Prey himself likely only killed a hundred or so with his own traps.
