This is a story about a sheep. A little sheep, locked deep in prison, put there by ponies. He doesn't want to be there, but then he's had to do a lot of things he doesn't want to. It's a shame he deserves to be in there.

I’m waiting for the day Prey can throw everything in the ponies faces. But until then, I will dutifully read.
Hmm, who did he fight... Night or Day? Interesting as usual
A lovely present for meeee! A new chapter!
Just letting you know writer (wo)mans, I really appreciate the short escapes from reality you allow us.
Want moar. Need moar.
I large part of me is hoping that Prey and a group of ponies can become friends and understand the injustices imposed by current Equestrian society.
Oh, we got the chapter in the end.
Very nice read, poor Prey is about to crack, mistakes over mistakes, we can hardly blame him though.
I always hope there will be a happy ending.
Good chapter, it's always a good chapter.

Uh, if you're asking who Crimson fought, it was some other Night Guards. Crimson overestimated himself, challenged too many thestrals to a no holds barred sparring match, and got badly hurt. 😣
No fishz for dead guards, yes? I can only hear the dead-griff's voice as Trooper Andrej from Helsreach. The accent totally fits.
I find it hilarious how Prey was proven right when he revealed everything to the therapist. No pony other than Crimson will understand Prey. No pony will treat him as anything other than a monster. Not that he isn't one, but treating him otherwise is how you can get him to change.
Mmmm... I cant wait to see hoe this arc is going to end. The pressure's been building up so much that I'm sure whatever it is, it's gonna be explosive.

MY GOD IT'S A RAINBOW (not)Llama!! I'm temped to say rainbow lamb...
Well, what an invigoratingly sour episode: fined by the Powers that Be, harassed by the irritating Strange Happenstance and stalked by some unknown presence in the sewer, all as the Thieves draw ever closer. With overwhelming pressure like this, I feel that Prey belongs to the wrong universe; perhaps it would've been better if he'd been an urchin of Fallen London, or maybe as an out-and-out fugitive from the Imperium's Most Holy Inquisition. Occupations such as those might be a shade less stressful than what Prey's got going on now.
Alas.
An exemplary installation, as always.
Regards, Laika.
I'm hoping that if Prey finally tells Crimson everything then I kinda want the only thing for Crimson to say is "Okay"
This level of detail is why this story is just so fucking good. The words you choose to use, how you make their experiences impact their character in subtle and noticable ways, how they learn and fail and get punished for it in real ways, god I love it all.

It's just like his meeting with Clear Mind; when he shows his power, it's satisfying as all hell, but the moment he finishes he knows his show of power just gives him more problems than it solves.
10532604
Undoubtedly.
So... you're apologizing for writing a little bit too much, and now we have to read even more before the climax of the arc?
...I have a feeling you won't hear any complaints out of us, friend.

"I am the lord of all evil, of damnation and hell, I have burned armies and drained rivers! I am the end, the lord of darkness, the eternal hate! I have sundered mountains, burned cities, and even once kicked a puppy! The destroyer of life, the Dark, the Endless, the Vanquisher, the Ravager, the Burner, the Desolation in Wool, the father of all evils! A monster among monsters that you cannot even comprehend!"
"Ok."
10532604
Quite right, because Prey is by no means all powerful. All his power comes from runes, set up, and being sneaky. He isn't straight up powerful, nor physically strong.
"There's always a bigger fish." 🐠
10531903
Everyone (or everypony), keeps pushing him and pushing him and pushing him. Will he crack, or will he crumble?
🙂🙃🙁?
10532565
😊 I do try, thank you.
10531903
A Happy Ending is subjective. 😈 What is good to one will be bad to another. 😇
If Prey wins, a monster wins. 🐑 If the ponies win, a monster is put down for good.💀
If you meant a happy ending to the ARC, well, you'll see. *Mwha ha ha ha cough cough* ..... (When I finally get there, since this ARC doesn't seem to be finishing on time 😂)
If you mean total, final, and ultimate ending of it all: I haven't actually definitely decided on an ultimate ending for the story.
Thanks for the chapter! I very much liked it! ❤
I was going to list my highlights, buy then realized it was the whole chapter.😊
Also, Darkest Dungeon has now been created! It would be funny if anyone rolled a perfect in their test of will check to become valiant. You know like some regular MLP magic BS that the show has and is totally cheating! It would be a way to have a more focused fight if half the enemy force was going insane and some were having heart and mind failure. I imagine this might be a fun way to deal with the sewer group being like a group of 10 like the first battle that took place off screen.
Whatever you decide I am looking forward to it!
Thanks again for writing!

Ur mum gae
*Prey very quickly learned he had just made a grave mistake.*
It's amusing how lucky everyone has got with Prey in theory, while he does seem to be a master of improvisation his main strengths lying in preparation. If he had the assets and the time he'd probably be the most lethal thing in Equestria with his cascades of rune arrays.
But from the original rebel army having the constant pressure and having to relocate often essentially rendering any major runes useless and the night guard keeping a vigilant watch on him. I mean they gave him like a week and he turned a simple apartment into a place Daring Do would be screwed in.
10532759
Aw come on now... Prey isn't a monster, he just did what he had to do in order to survive, that's all.
not his fault he had to resort to extreme mesures, in the end he did more good than bad right ?
I mean, someone did try to destroy the entire world out of hybris and is now in charge of half of the most powerful country on the planet, surely killing a few dogs is nothing in comparaison.
right ?
I hope that Crimson comes to see that what Prey says is true. Princess Luna does not care about them and is most likely using them as an attempt to gain love from the Equestrian population.
In other words, they are a means to an end.
A Great chapter as always. While arc .3 had a ceaseless tension this arc seems to jump around weather it has action plots or character stuff. It keeps it varied but am missing when building to a plan or I guess shopping stuff?.
Some thing just sticks out me with why this is told or something. I’m putting this, the next Snake ,and looking back at the monster scene as oddly out of pace and not Prey being his usual cautious self. My guess that I can’t nail down is this is actually;
Prey messing with his own memory,
Prey is pushing him self too hard and is a problem starting to come to a head,
Bad timing with effect the Curse /Hex thing being set up,
Actually mostly straight and there is actually something in the dark.
Fluff or detail that don’t matter this arc if never.
10532253
Don't you throw baseless accusations at me! I'm definitely not a Llama!
And I'll have you know that Llama wool is definitely softer than a sheep's!
10533427
I think Crimson's take is too idealistic, bordering on religious. But Prey as usual is too pessimistic. Prey is paranoid, although this often saves his life, it also dooms him to a vicious cycle of suffering. Prey overshoot in his cynicism. Assuming the worst may prepare him for the worst, but it doesn't make him wise, especially when it ends up inadvertently causing the worst to unfold.
There's a fundamental relation between this fic and the show that has been established, and that in this fic, the events of the story and the show happen in parallel in the same world, but that the show is sheltered from the brutality that we see in the fic by pony society. Murder, drug trafficking, dark magic, these things are all banished to the dark recesses far outside the norm. So far outside the norm that a single murder was shocking.
The implication of this is that the characterization of Luna, Celestia, or any other character in the show is accurate. Possibly incomplete, but not a fabrication. The reality is that Luna probably doesn't care about Crimson like a personal god, however, she's also unlikely to be the brutal psychopathic dictator Prey has imagined her to be.
One thing that is clear is that Prey really doesn't know how Luna or Celesita think. In his mind they must be ruthless monsters to whom other creatures are just insects to be stepped on, probably because Prey has only ever experienced authority in this way, is personally accustomed to treating people this way, and has projected the actions of the Border Guard onto Celestia.
He assumes that the actions of the Border Guard were sanctioned by the "Sunwolf", but it's quite possible that the fic Celestia is like the show Celestia and is simply ignorant of the true extent of the conflicts.
Much like the politicians of our world, it is not a matter of them being supernaturally evil that leads to hundreds of thousands of casualties overseas, but that they are divorced from and/or are intentionally ignorant of the war crimes they end up committing. It is simply a consequence of the imperialist systems they operate in, and even the most morally decent people do reprehensible things while in office. (Though morally compromised people inevitably end up doing more harm on average, think Bush vs Obama: they've both approved the killing of lots of innocent civilians, but one is responsible for far more senseless death than the other)
Another example of this is when Prey assumes that Lord Vanish will end up dead in a ditch somewhere for challenging Princess Luna, and there's no way he can force Crimson to give up his trinket because Luna has limitless power. Prey is wrong here, and not only because he misunderstood the political position Luna must be in, but because it's likely that Princess Luna is indeed not the psychopath he envisions, and that she wouldn't murder people left and right for inconveniencing her like she's Stalin.
This isn't to suggest that Princess Luna or Princess Celestia are some kind of omnibenevolent rulers. Crimson is wrong to believe that Luna truly appreciates him. And the reason for it is possibly crueler than that she's a monster, it's that she's a person, and no person could ever be so infinitely good to be able to love and cherish every one. Luna will never be able to summon the emotional energy to love all her subjects in any non-abstract way. Princess Luna will be cruel and callous to Prey and Crimson not because she's malevolent but because there's no other way these circumstances can unfold. It is just the way things are. She is physically incapable of caring enough to compensate for how uncaring the world is.
P.S.
On the note of Prey assuming the worst. One thing I've been thinking about is how world-shattering it would be for Prey if he was just released from his sentence one day. I can't imagine it would be soon. But say he's done like some many years of service for the ISND and Luna is just like: "Yo fam, you served the public good real good and now you're free to dip out, yo." Prey would be completely baffled. He's preparing for the ultimate confrontation because he's assumed that the golden shackles are there forever. That he's going to be used as permanent slave labor until he stops being useful, and then into a shallow grave he goes. But what if he's wrong? He's probably wrong, the ponies are real big on reforming villains. He's sitting on top of runes, and veropedes, and dark magic wicker trees. So it just turns out he's free, and then it's: "What have I been preparing for? I've made so many sacrifices to be ready for a fight I'm not going to have. I don't have to fight for my freedom anymore." There's a dark comedy to that. Though knowing Prey's luck he would spring his escape plan as Luna is signing the documents for his release.
10534458
Is that so...?
Then, answer me this, if you aren;t a multicolored rainbow llama, what are you hmm???
You know, when I was saying all that in my head it sounded a lot funnier than now that I'm reading it...
10534463
Wow, that was a fairly long summation and breakdown. In general, quite accurate too. 😄 Prey has his view of what an "Alicorn" is. Whether that view is actually accurate or not is neither here nor there, because Prey is going forwards as if it is true.
As for the future, possible release, and what Celestia, the "Sun Wolf", is really like? Once again, we'll have to wait and see.
10534466
Meh, sometimes life can't get to the level of goofiness in our minds.
That said, I'm just a sentient rainbow! All references made by me or anyone associated with me that claim I'm a Llama are false and misinterpreted!
10536656
So, got any uh, special rainbow powers, eh... heh heh?
Some fear Cliff-kun, Prey fears Trouble-chan. Certainly will be interested to see what Trouble-chan has in store for him next time!
Another absolutely stunning chapter, im excited to see where it goes from here! Keel up the great work!
When this is all over and done with i would absolutely buy a physical copy
10537892
By the end you may have to purchase it in multiple parts, lest it would be the size of multiple dictionaries.
Wow eight hundred thousand words. Congratulations are deserved, to the author of course but also to my fellow readers. I think War & Peace, which is known for being long and dense, is less then 600k.
But honestly thank you Lambs Prey, for keeping us all enthralled and for giving us something to look forward to in these grim times. I hope you are doing well.
P. S. Even though it has not affected them much so far most of the ISND had their eyesight damaged by poising. I wonder if they will get some kind enchanted secret service style sunglasses to hide the scars under their eyes 😎, or they just get some contacts(do they have contacts in equestria?).
10540525
Thank you for the compliment. Looking back, the story has been going on a while now, and has been evolving and changing. Lot's has happened in in, (there's been enough chapters for it all to happen 😆) and there's still a lot of story left to go. I'm 99.999% certain this is going to be over 1 million words. Since, you know, almost there already, so not really a bold claim, but it's all good!
And here are some sunglasses = 👓
I am really perplexed by Strange Happenstance.
One theory is that he's involved with the vigilantes and is investigating the ISND because of their connection to the crimes. Another theory I have is that he's a changeling, and is pressing for information on what happened across the mountains because he was briefed on Corporal Shimmer's death.
His presence prior to the Warlock arc, as well as his carelessness with his disguise, support the vigilante theory. His closed off mind supports the changeling theory.
The vigilante theory is probably the correct one and he acts as the information gatherer for the team...
10544396
hes a fun charachter to read, and therefore has reason to be loved. but jesus Christ Is he an evil little shit
10542857
If Strange Happenstance is with the vigilantes his closed off mind could be due to some sort of magic artifact or spell, the vigilantes owning some sort of mind shield artifact is definitely possible.
I finally caught up (lots of sleepless nights spent reading because I had to know what happens next)
Also is it just me or is Prey not a direct result of pony stupidity? Thinking about it if the border guard weren't complete idiots and either A. directly defended Preys village or B. properly evacuated everyone then the village wouldn't be destroyed, Prey wouldn't become part of the resistance, didn't become a machine of guerilla war and all this mess would be avoided
10548017
Yep, more or less. Now the descendants of those Border Guards from way back then are the ones reaping what was sown fifty-seven years ago:
"Let their sins be upon the heads of their children," And all that. 😇
Also, hope the sleeplessness was something you considered worth the time investment, and hope you like in the future too.
“fishz”
That’s how Garrow spoke. Or how his accent effected his words. I’m thinking, just like snake, the way Garrow spoke is slowly seeping into Prey’s vocabulary. Or I’m just over analyzing something minor and insignificant
10549844
Yep, that's right.
Nope, you're not.
10549870
I’m just waiting for him to suddenly break into cursing with Garrow’s accent like he does with breaking into Zebrican
Looking forward to another chapter!

Because why wouldn't you want to be a pony? After all, every decent 'person' was (Missing punctuation and/or sentence cut off)
