"What did you decide on after the last step?" asked Spike, pacing back and forth across the room.
"That I would trust my friends more and talk with them about what my plans are and what's happening," Twilight grumpily replied.
"And what are you doing now?" Spike asked.
Twilight looked down, and lightly kicked the ground with a hoof. "Doing things without telling my friends about it."
"And why are you doing that?"
"Because..." She huffed and pushed her head up. "It's different, okay? It's not anywhere near as dangerous this time, and I do genuinely believe they'll be more safe if I don't tell them, and even if things go wrong it won't be nearly as much of a problem to explain the situation afterwards and fix things in case I need their help, and speaking of which if I do need their help I will actually acknowledge it and seek it out this time as soon as I realise that's the case."
Spike just gave her a mostly flat look. "And how is it better than just telling them about things right away like you said you would do?" He dropped his expression for something a little less stern, and flied towards Twilight. "I know you're trying to protect them, but you know it would be best if you were all in it together. That's what you told me to tell you."
"And I have a point there," Twilight replied. "But the more creatures know something, the easier it is for that something to get out, and the more targets are there for anyone trying to get it out in the first place. It's inherent to this kind of thing, the more dots in the web the weaker it is, even if their help might be useful." She sighed and looked to the ground again. "I'll think about it. I'll try to figure out what the best compromise might be."

They're your friends you twit, they're not gonna blab if you take all of three seconds to impress on them that this is actually serious and needs to be kept quiet.
I swear she's turning into Celestia...
As Ro noted, this isn't abstract confidentiality maintenance, it's Twilight trusting her closest friends. Including the one who impressed on her that giving away a secret is the fastest way to lose a friend.
Besides, anyone who wants this information will probably assume she told them anyway. They're already imperiled just by associating with her and no Twilight that isn't an excuse to distance yourself from them.
