Starting to warm up to Ebon, good! :)
Why do I get the feeling that this "Pudding" isn't as traditional as she thinks... and that finding out will break her heart.
Why am I getting ominous feeling from this letter.... am I the only one getting a bad feeling?
Damn a month and a half? I've seen long distance relationships implode even when the couple kept in touch nearly every day.
Please tell me there are pony versions of Vic, Kenny, Captain Tenneal and Guy!archive-media-1.nyafuu.org/vp/image/1550/21/1550210583935.jpg
Why am I imagining her as Harley Quinn every time she calls him Puddin'?
I swear to the 9 1/2 gods if puddin isn't staying faithful to this sweet girl imma reach through this story and smackim

I think the story will do the job for you, if so.
Anyone else who lives in Canterlot will be looking at a Dear Joan letter there?
I wonder if Equestrian magic will give annymous anything extra beyond best human endurance through quality food and excersize enviroments? Wouldnt expect him to be able to Iron Man or Ultras, but theres all sorts of people run marathons and he should be able to walk the distance pretty easily in under 8 hours, dependng on how much jogging he already does? How much excersize would doing the Canterlot mountain road be equivalent to?
Artemis' many letters vs Huck's one, lots of apologies, and the sheer amount of time it took for him to write just throws red flags all over that field. Granted, let's say it takes a week for that letter to arrive, it's still a significant amount of time to not stay in contact. Judging by how nice and considerate she can see Anon is after such a short time it's going to be no surprise she'll run into his arms to cry when Huck's real character is revealed at some point. Just as easy to see why her feelings would develop for Anon too.

Yeah pretty sure that particular term of endearment is ruined forever now. My first thought upon reading it was to wonder if that was flagging something terrible. Makes sense given the colts name though.
10525077
Oh yes, this must be a thing.
10525086
The pet name and her innocent attitude might be contributing factors, Harley also developed a odd friendship of sorts with batman once she finally got free of the jokers clutches in the more recent comic line so then there's that.
Her help in the recent Joker war storyline is notable as well as I'm under the impression that she saved batman after his first encounter with new villain Punchline.
10525043
Probably because “pudding” is what Harley Quinn generally call the Joker and they are the poster children for abusive romantic relationships in the public mind.
10525132
Yes Harley is much better off without the Joker
You're flying the relationship death flags in the stratosphere mate, at this rate I'm half expecting an invitation to a funeral rather than just a "dear Jane" letter.
Nice chapter. Nice to see our newest Guardmare get a hoof in the established group.
Nice~ That mare might get her stud for a visit to storm her flower garden
Best VIP in work environment

In the beginning I updated this three times a week. However unfortunately I have had to slow down since then, and the pace is more an update every two weeks (sometimes just one). You can monitor the Royal Guard Mare Thread on 4chan's /mlp/ board, I post them there first.

This story's Equestria is culturally close to 19th century England, but most of the military gags and scenarios are going to come from the modern era because that's more relatable even in spite of the anachronism (and I mean, the source material in FIM is pretty anachronistic itself).
10523035
In Victorian England, although there was still considerable social discrimination between classes according to birth, by the formal rules of social order, someone who had served as an officer in the army was considered on an equal footing with a nobleborn for the purposes of issuing a challenge. This equivalence for example comes up in the original Flashman novel, upon which several aspects of the story are based. Harry Flashman is noble-born, and initially declines the challenge issued by Elspeth Morrison's father on the basis that he's a commoner, only for Mr. Morrison to reveal that he was a Captain in the army, and therefore had every right to demand a duel (if Flashman didn't marry his daughter, of whom he had taken advantage).
Therefore Kilfeather, an officer, is well within legal privilege to challenge someone who has been ennobled.
10525086
That was, of course intentional. However, his last name really is Pudding, so it fits.
10525173
While the name did raise my hackles a little, I found the words "month and a half" to be more worrying and the fact that he didn't once mention plans to make up for any of his failings, just a stream of empty platitudes. It smacks of someone who's feeling guilty and fishing for absolution rather than someone who sincerely wishes they hadn't done something to hurt another.
If I were to guess at what he wished he'd written it'd be something along the lines of:
"Dear Sparkshower, I'm so sorry.
I've slept with every mare in the villiage since you've been gone but I don't have the balls or the spine to just tell you it's over, so I'll keep sending you these letters to make myself feel better and hope that one day you forget about me.
Sincerely,
Huckleberry Pudding."
And that's only if I'm charitable to him and assume he's just a weak-willed colt who got lonely and not just a cold-hearted bastard who fancies himself a "stud" or a "player".
Edit: It's kinda weird to come back to something I wrote about 4yrs ago and see just how off the mark I was but still agree with the original thought process. And why, yes I do enjoy having fun with the spoiler tool.
10525381
George MacDonald Fraser's Flashman? I think I'll need to give that a read.
lol
10525408
Yes, it's in the FAQ as one of the inspirations for ELWG: https://pastebin.com/QH8Mwutm
I am begging you, please spare the Pegapone. She's done nothing wrong.
10525044
That's a Death Flag.
10525517
For her or her puddin is the question, though i also get evil/basterd boyfreind thaats sleeping around behind her back
10525089
Don’t worry, you’re going to wanna smack him upside the head despite him being faithful.
I have sneaking suspicion that, if Hucklefuck is not being entirely faithful to our dear Pegasus, there will be a Teambuilding Exercise involving Ebonshield, Bound, and Glamorspear.
*Slowly drags sword across whetstone*
Best not make Artemis feel unappreciated now, as Huckleberry might be a source of future stresses. Wouldn't want anything to happen to her, lest we might wanna give Huckles here a... shave.
10525043
He is too traditional, which is not good at all.
wow sparkshower really hit some liking with the readers, all acting like protective big brothers :D
and i can only agree to them, that letter is a little weak.
Artemis is such a sweetheart!
This is a sweet filler!
And it better stay that way!
10525922
I mean, she has that good old fashioned small town innocence, a level if not naive mindset, and seeing a more positive light to stuff.
Downside she is emotionally fragile, but thats fine.
I'm a little sad that there is no fan art, safe or unsafe yet.

Anon hater? Seriously? My comments are on record, unedited. You're reading what you want to see into them.
This is my original quote:
Nowhere in there did I say it was not a 'real' name - whatever a 'fake' name is. It was always that Anon is ORIGINALLY from another language - Latin - and that it is rarely used (as a name) in the English-speaking world. YES I am pushing this, because YOU are MISREPRESENTING ME. I bring up statistics, and you bring up anecdotes. First off anecdotes aren't facts. Second off, ALL I did was bring up a statistic, you're free to argue that 1,000 people in the US with the name Anon isn't rare, it's a subjective opinion, but that's not what you did.
Then you say you're not hostile? Brah, you were the one to pull out the Ad Hominem attack:
I not only named my source, but publicly acknowledged I made a carry-error and went back to correct it. This shows a level of integrity YOU don't have, because rather than acknowledging that YOU were the one to take my words out of context and turn this conversation uncivil, you made to disparage me...then when called out on it you DOUBLED DOWN.

Thank you for responding to my comments, it was very enlightening. A quick aside and reminder, if you respond to a comment in a chapter other than the one it was posted in, the respondee does not get a notification.
Huh, I was not expecting the 19th century culture aspect and thus far it didn't seem to be very prevalent. I suppose it was the simpler tech and fact that there were still knights - in more than an honorary title - running around that threw me off. The fact that you pulled out the Pas d'armes - which effectively ended with the 15th century - REALLY threw me in the wrong direction. I am much more learned in the Medieval and not the Victorian, see. Chivalry by the 19th was a very different beast than it was in the 15th century. The idea that even a knight was a peer to a noble in the middle ages was laughable, and had Kilfeather done that in the mid-1400's when most of the famous pas d'armes occurred, it would be the lord's right to go to Kilfather's patron and have him (severely) punished, maybe even stripped of his knighthood.
I'm still not sold how well 19th century honor jives with the modern military, but as aforementioned (elsewhere) I do find the story rather entertaining. Your characters are vibrant and dynamic, they feel like real people with their own histories and motivations. Watching Anon navigate the minefield that is another culture is wild. Hell, even Anon comes across as less of a blank slate than most Anon's would. Really, my only complaint at this point is with your following, but that can't be helped I suppose. Keep up the good work you two, I am eager to devour more!
10526207
Nope, I said my peace. I just wasn't about to let him end that 'exchange' so disparagingly.
Seriously, Bobbles, I like your and TheManFromAnotherTime work, but your following is downright toxic. The fact that questions and criticism get downvoted to hell, without response is just sad. I know my response to the characters in chapters 13/14 were scathing - take my vitriol as an indicator of engagement - and I fully expected those comments to be more heavily criticized...but seriously...
Poor Artemis. We all know what usually follows such good, happy days.
Poor thing. I'm predicting that pictures of her night out have made it back home, or will soon.
10525047
With phones and the internet? Or just letters?
10526226
It's probably because the way you go about it makes you look like an asshole. You don't just critique; you go on the attack. That turns most people off even when they might agree with you.
Very interesting story so far! I have to admit, you got me hooked. Please don't drop this, i can't stand it when authors hook me and leave...
10526542
Funny, this is the only story where I have received that kind of negative response to my commentary style.
I dont like you bringing up Spark's coltfriend so much, man. Giving me anxiety. If that precious flower is sad I'm gonna be sad.
10526754
...and then angry?
Righteous angry to those who saddened the innocent pegasus?
Artemis is so precious here.
Reading this chapter I'm really starting to think of Harley Quinn from Batman. Lol
10526754
Same ;-; (albeit 3 weeks later than you, gonna hold out some hope here)
Now watch as Huckleberry Pudding turns out to be The Joker in disguise as a stallion.
